A Study Of Vertical And Horizontal Visibility Relationships Under Water, Jean J. Mccarthy
A Study Of Vertical And Horizontal Visibility Relationships Under Water, Jean J. Mccarthy
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
A threefold study was undertaken to:
1) determine the nature of the mathematical relationship between vertical and horizontal visibility underwater
2) examine the feasibility of using the Secchi disc method to measure horizontal visibility in the photic zone;
3) obtain descriptive data on vertical and horizontal visibility in selected lakes of southern Minnesota.
The Secchi disc technique for measuring· visibility was modified to accommodate horizontal readings, and data were col1lected from 12 lakes at 5, 15 and 25 feet depths under controlled conditions. Reliability correlations were significant (p ( .01) and ranged from .764 to .994. Correlations and regression equations …

Turbulence Spectra Above A Vegetated Surface Under Conditions Of Sensible Heat Advection, Raymond P. Motha, Shashi B. Verma, Norman J. Rosenberg
Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Spectra of vertical and horizontal velocity, air temperature and humidity fluctuations were analyzed from measurements made over a well-watered alfalfa crop under conditions of sensible heat advection. Vertical velocity and air temperature spectra as well as cospectra of momentum, sensible heat and water vapor were found to be dependent on atmospheric thermal stratification. These spectra and cospectra were shifted toward higher frequencies under advective as compared to lapse conditions. These results indicate that the predominant eddy sizes are relatively smaller under advective conditions. Humidity spectra, on the other hand, were independent of daytime thermal stratification conditions but were influenced by …

A Redescription Of The Wood-Rasping Amphipod Trophichelura Gomezi Ortiz, 1976 (Cheluridae) From The Florida Keys, With Notes On Its Distribution And Ecology, James Darwin Thomas
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
The wood-rasping amphipod, Tropichelura gomezi Ortiz, 1976, is redescribed from the Florida Keys to include diagnostic characters omitted in the original description. Morphological characters and distributional patterns of T. gomezi are compared with those of the other member of the genus, Tropichelura insulae (Caiman, 1910). Laboratory studies show that T. gomezi defends its burrow entrance from other members of its species, but tolerates the presence of limnoriid isopods with which it cooccurs. A lectotype for Tropichelura insulae is designated .

A New Species Of Cerapus Say, 1817 (Crustacea: Amphipoda) From The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, With Notes On Its Ecology, James Darwin Thomas, Richard W. Heard
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
During research in coastal marshes of the Mississippi Delta region in 1975, a large, undescribed amphipod belonging to the genus Cerapus was discovered in tidal channels. This new species, C. benthophilus, is characterized by its large size and 7-12 segmented antennal flagella. Habitat preference is muddy silt bottoms upon which it constructs conspicuous mats or "tufts" of interwoven tubes in shallow coastal bays and marshes from Louisiana to the panhandle areas of northern Florida.

Uranium Transport In The Walker River Basin, California And Nevada, Larry Benson, D. L. Leach
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
During the summer of 1976 waters from tributaries, rivers, springs and wells were sampled in the Walker River Basin. Snow and sediments from selected sites were also sampled. All samples were analyzed for uranium and other elements. The resulting data provide an understanding of the transport of uranium within a closed hydrologic basin as well as providing a basis for the design of geochemical reconnaissance studies for the Basin and Range Province of the Western United States. Spring and tributary data are useful in locating areas containing anomalous concentrations of uranium. However, agricultural practices obscure the presence of known uranium …

Fallow re-assessment. I. 72M29. Location - Merredin Research Station II. Other fallow results. As part of the fallow re-assessment project, a study was made of results from all trials done since the early 1920's which either compared fallow with non fallow or examined other aspects of fallowing. Analysis of these data has led to an update of some of the rainfall - soil water storage - yield relationships presented in previous reports. On the basis of these rainfall-yield relationships and of relevant rainfall statistics we can make an assessment of the probable value of fallow at different locations; Merredin; Chapman, …

An Analysis Of The U.S.-Canadian East Coast Fisheries Resource Agreement, Michael V. Guimond
An Analysis Of The U.S.-Canadian East Coast Fisheries Resource Agreement, Michael V. Guimond
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
This analysis of the U.S.-Canadian East Coast Fisheries Resource Agreement was initiated at the request of a group of fishing industry representatives concerned about some of the terms enumerated in this document. The purpose behind this research project was threefold. First, to determine if this Agreement was consistent with the intent of the FCMA. Second, to determine the economic impact of this Treaty upon the New England fishing industry. The third purpose, which is not in the scope of this paper, was to aid in determining what the response of the user groups should be.
Impact Of The Ussr's 200 Mile Fishery Zone On The Japanese-Soviet Fishery Negotiations, Hiroshi Hara
Impact Of The Ussr's 200 Mile Fishery Zone On The Japanese-Soviet Fishery Negotiations, Hiroshi Hara
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The current negotiations between Japan and the Soviet Union on the amount of catch by Japanese within the Soviet Union's 200-mile zone and by the Soviet Union within the Japanese 200-mile zone are very complex. When the Soviets declared their 200-mile zone, Japan did not agree to Soviet fishing jurisdiction over the 200-mile zone surrounding these islands. In order to secure its traditional interests in fishing within the extensive 200-mile lines, including the disputed islands, Japan had to agree to the Soviet lines with a proviso that territorial questions would be separated from fishing rights. This thesis examines the recent …

Maritime Unions & U.S. Shipping Policy, Jon Lucas
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
This paper explores the role played by the U.S. maritime unions in influencing the formation of American shipping policy. The thesis of the paper is that maritime unions have exerted great influence on legislators, through lobbying efforts to foster special-interest legislation which benefits union members at the expense of the taxpayer. The research is based on standard works on shipping and maritime labor relations, Hearings of the House and Senate Merchant Marine committees, and newspaper and magazine articles which trace the progress of various pieces of maritime legislation. Only the activities of the seagoing unions are discussed, and the paper …

A Proposal For The Establishment Of A Monthly Latin American Fisheries Newspaper, Kenneth Proudfoot
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
At the present time there does not exist any publication or other communication medium, directed specifically to a Latin American readership, that reports thoroughly and accurately on the fisheries and other marine-related developments in Latin America. Problems of language, physical size of the area, financing, personnel, bureaucracy and politics, among others, have always proved to be overwhelming. This study describes the informational needs of the people and organizations concerned with Latin America's fisheries sector, and review current fisheries and marine-related publications in this region. a preliminary economic feasibility analysis for the creation and publication of a new monthly Latin American …
Management Of Antarctic Krill, Paul Setliff
Management Of Antarctic Krill, Paul Setliff
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
This study pertains to the problem of international activity in an area of political and ecological sensitivity, the Southern Ocean. Of specific concern is the question of which group of states should have a voice in management of Antarctic krill. The niche filled by krill within the ecosystem and its potential as a fishery is discussed. Past international practice has been affected for the most part by the Antarctic Treaty of 1959 which has maintained a somewhat exclusive "club" of nations as the overseers of Antarctic activity. However, states not party to the 1959 Treaty are becoming interested in the …
State Government And Ocs Policy: An Analysis Of The Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act And The Amendments Of 1978, Bruce Vild
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
An Energy Research and Development Administration report indicates that the United States is increasing its dependence on oil from the countries that participated in the 1973 oil embargo. Given the volatile situation in the Middle East at this writing, the Carter Administration's peace initiatives notwithstanding, this seems an imprudent policy. And, at a time when "Project Independence" is a recent memory, there is a great deal of irony in increased importation. It seems in the Nation's best interest to reverse that trend. Natural gas is also in demand, of course, especially in the Northeast during the winter. The best solution …
A Preliminary Cost-Benefit Analysis Of The Proposed St. Thomas-St. John Sand Mining Project, Random Dubois
A Preliminary Cost-Benefit Analysis Of The Proposed St. Thomas-St. John Sand Mining Project, Random Dubois
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
A territorial ban on beach and sand removal in the U. S. Virgin Islands has resulted in a search for alternative sources. Insecure extra-territorial reserves and high shipping costs have made sand importation prohibitive. Recent surveys conducted in 1977 by the U. S. Geological Survey identified several nearshore sources of aggregate adjacent to the island of St. Thomas. In a 1978 workshop jointly conducted by the Government of the Virgin Islands and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration various alternatives were presented for sand extraction. Two alternatives are examined using a cost benefit approach.
Potential Use Of Hydroelectric Facilities For Manipulating The Fertility Of Lake Mead, Larry J. Paulson, John R. Baker, James E. Deacon
Potential Use Of Hydroelectric Facilities For Manipulating The Fertility Of Lake Mead, Larry J. Paulson, John R. Baker, James E. Deacon
Publications (WR)
Analysis of historical nutrient data for Lake Mead indicates that the fertility of the reservoir has decreased which may be the cause for a corresponding decline in the largemouth bass population. However, it appears that fertility can be manipulated by altering the operation of the dam. The depletion of nutrients in the euphotic zone by phytoplankton and subsequent accumulation in the hypolimnion during summer and fall provide a natural nutrient gradient from which water of varying fertility can be drawn for discharge. This combined with alterations in the depth or seasonal pattern of discharge can possibly be used to enhance …

COMMENTS 1. No insect problems experienced and broadleaf weeds effectively controlled by spraying. Septoria· leaf spot incidence insufficient to affect yields. 2. Little effect of time of planting on either total dry matter or grain yield. Crop received about 70% of the average May-October rainfall with a very dry September-October. Perhaps the distribution of rainfall allowed a similar pattern of water use, and total water use by each planting time. 3. There is probably a significant effect of Nitrogen regime on grain yield. Osmocote (N3) consistently yielded more than either single (N1) or repeated (N2) dressings of Agran 34:0. The …
