Low Frequency Nearshore Current Fluctuations On Florida's Central East Coast, Ortwin Von Zweck, David A. Hale
Low Frequency Nearshore Current Fluctuations On Florida's Central East Coast, Ortwin Von Zweck, David A. Hale
Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications
Nearshore current measurements in 10 m of water off Hutchinson Island on Florida's central east coast were obtained over 40 da. Data analyses reveal independent alongshore and crosshelf systems of suhinertial waves superimposed on a weak southward, essentially alongshore mean current. The crosshelf current fluctuations appear to be wind driven, while only the 2-2.8 da alongshore current fluctuations are coherent with windstress.

On The Water Masses Of Norfolk Canyon, Evon Paul Ruzecki
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Results from four cruises in the outer continental shelf/slope region of the Middle Atlantic Bight demonstrate the effect of Norfolk Canyon, an east coast submarine canyon, on the exchange of local water masses. Seasonal distributions of water masses and water types around the canyon were determined from closely spaced (2-5 km) hydrographic and XBT stations. Five component water types representing shelf, winter (or cold pool), slope, warm Western North Atlantic and cool Western North Atlantic waters are defined by specific T/S signatures. The percent of each water type necessary to achieve measured T/S values along sections to the north and …

On Basin Hypsometry And The Morphodynamic Response Of Coastal Inlet Systems, John D. Boon Iii, Robert J. Byrne
Reports
The exchange of water and entrained material between coastal basins and the inner continental shelf reduces to the problem of polarized transport (flood+, ebb-) in the conveyance channels routing flow through a coastal inlet. Here the net long-term movement of materials is largely a function of the fluid velocity and discharge~ variables whose time history at-a-station contains both periodic and aperiodic elements. In this paper the importance of the major periodic elements in coastal inlet flows and their potential contribution to the net transport of bedload materials is discussed.

The Virginia Chesapeake Bay: Recent Sedimentation And Paleodrainage, Michael J. Carron
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
A comparison of the bathymetric surveys of the 1850-series and 1950-series indicated an average sedimentation rate for the Virginia Chesapeake Bay of 0.55 m (1.81 ft) for the last century. A statistically significant relationship between the depth of water and the rate of sedimentation was found where high rates of sedimentation exist in extremely shallow water (0 to 2 m) and in intermediate depths (6 to 13 m), while low rates exist between 2 m and 6 m, and in some cases in water deeper than 13 m. The results of 900 km of continuous seismic reflection profiles taken in …

The Comparative Ecology Of Two Populations Of The Troglobitic Isopod Crustacean Lirceus Usdagalun (Asellidae), James Alexander Estes
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Aquatic communities of two caves in Lee Co., Virginia, were compared, and an examination was made of the life history phenomena of the troglobitic isopod Lirceus usdagalun. Measurements of physical and biological parameters were made in Thompson Cedar Cave and Gallohan Cave No. l. A contagious distribution was exhibited by populations of L. usdagalun in both caves and also by the population of another troglobitic isopod, Caecidotea recurvata, in Gallohan Cave No. 1. This distribution was attributed to aggregations of individuals which were considered to occur in areas of preference or optimal habitat patches. Lirceus usdagalun exhibited a …

Non-Professional Scuba Training Fatalities In The United States (1970-1976), Peter Redmayne
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
From 1970 to 1976 ninety seven fatalities occurred during scuba diving training courses taught by nationally recognized scuba certification agencies. Data from these fatalities was gathered and analyzed at the University of Rhode Island's National Underwater Accident Data Center (NUADC) from September 1977 to June 1978. After analysis of each case and compilation of data for the statistical tables, an effort was made to look for specific trends that occurred over the course of the period investigated. In the course of analysis it became evident that a high percentage of training facilities occurred to students who were diving in less …

A Limnological Study Of Ricks Pond And The Gulpha Creek Drainage In Garland County, Arkansas, Tom M. Buchanan, James Houston, Joe F. Nix, Richard L. Meyer, Eugene H. Schmitz
Technical Reports
A limnological investigation of Ricks Pond and the Gulpha Creek drainage of Garland County, Arkansas was conducted between 1 June 1978, and 21 August 1978. Water samples taken from ten stations on three different dates indicated that the stream and pond systems were typical in water quality characteristics of other small, high gradient streams and impoundments in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas. In Ricks Pond, thermal stratification occurred along with the development of an oxygen deficient zone below a depth of one meter. Other water quality parameters indicated that Ricks Pond is a moderately productive ecosystem, with the productivity limited …

Hydrography And Hydrodynamics Of Virginia Estuaries. Xvii, Mathematical Ecosystem Modeling Study Of The York River, P. V. Hyer, A. Y. Kuo, C. S. Fang, W. J. Hargis Jr.
Reports
The York River drainage basin is rural, with an economy based on farming, logging, fishing and recreation. Water quality conditions are generally good, with low chlorophyll and nutrients and low fecal coliform counts. Dissolved oxygen concentrations are high except for periodic deoxygenation of the water deeper than 8 m in the reach extending 10 km upstream of the mouth.
A quasi-three dimensional tidal average model was constructed and calibrated using intensive field data collected in June and July, 1976 and verified using slack water run data from September, 1976. The model components are: salinity, fecal coliform, chlorophyll, CBOD, dissolved oxygen, …
