The Chemical And Biological Effect Of A Gulf Stream Intrusion Off St. Augustine, Florida, Larry P. Atkinson, Gustav-Adolf Paffenhöfer, William M. Dunstan

During a 3-day anchor station in shelf waters off St. Augustine, Florida we observed the effect of an intruding mass of deeper Gulf Stream water. The shelf waters were relatively low in nutrients and salinity while the Gulf Stream waters were high in salinity and nutrients. Onshore currents correlated with increases in nitrate and chlorophyll concentrations.

The advection of higher nutrient Gulf Stream water coincided with high chlorophyll (∼ mg chl a m−3) concentrations and dense populations of Phaeocystis pouchetii (up to 3.12 × 10°1−1). Zooplankton sampling was impossible in the bottom layer because of the …

This report summarizes results obtained from a program designed to measure very low levels of some commonly produced radionuc1ides in the Dardenelle Lake area of the Arkansas River near the Arkansas Nuclear I Power Station operated by Arkansas Power and Light Company. The main thrust of this program was to determine the increase in the concentration of the radionuclides as a result of reactor operation as a function of their distance from the source. Helminth and crustacean parasites from 2,387 Micropterus dolomieui, M. punctulatus, and M. salmoides were utilized to monitor annual pre- and postimpoundment succession patterns spanning eight con- tinuous years in Beaver Reservoir, Arkansas. Incidence of infection by ichthyoparasites with direct life cycles (monogenetic trematodes, leeches, and crustaceans) generally increased following impoundment, although leeches remained relatively constant. Exceptions to this general pattern occurred. Incidence of ichthyoparasites with indirect life cycles (digenetic trematodes, cestodes, acanthocephalans, and nematodes) decreased immediately following impoundment with subsequent increases to a point equal or above that of preimpoundment, although exceptions occurred. Primary productivity, water quality, and limiting factors of productivity were studied in Lake Chicot from 1 July 1975 to 30 September 1977 to ascertain the ameliorating effects of a comprehensive water quality improvement project. The upper lake receives only limited local run-off, but run-off from 350 square miles of agricultural land enters the lower lake through Connerly Bayou, the principal polluted tributary. Run-off over the predominantly silt and clay soils in the subsidized agricultural area contributes excessive amounts of colloidal silt and clay to the lower lake. Bottom surface sediment samples in the Virginia Channels portion of the Baltimore Harbor and Channels Project and the four specified disposal sites were obtained and chemically analysed in accordance with DAC W31-78-C-0038. In addition, chemical analyses were performed on 15 sediment samples delivered to us from Maryland.

In total, 90 stations were occupied in Virginia Channels and the four proposed disposal sites for bottom surface sediments for bulk chemical analyses. Samples from the Maryland Channels were supplied by the Maryland Geological Survey. -

Crumps Bank and Willoughby Bank in Southern Chesapeake Bay are an area of varying topography. The area is bounded by two large bridge-tunnel spans, the dredged Thimble Shoal Channel borders it to the north, and the Ocean View section of Norfolk, Virginia lies to the south. The purpose of this investigation is to determine the relationship of the bottom sediments of Crumps Bank and Willoughby Bank.to the current-generated topography, and that this topography is the result of tidal currents.

Description Of The Larval Development Of Squilla Empusa Say (Crustacea Stomatopoda) With Aspects Of Larval Ecology In Chesapeake Bay, Steven Gaines Morgan

Larvae of Sguilla empusa were collected from the plankton and were reared in the laboratory to describe the pelagic larval development and the postlarval stage. Nine pelagic stages are passed through before the postlarval stage is attained.

The larvae reared for descriptive purposes were subjected to sixteen combinations of temperature and salinity to determine their tolerance to the two parameters. Larvae survived longer and molted more frequently when reared at 25°/oo and 20°C or 25°C, which corresponds to the natural conditions of the Chesapeake Bay when the larvae were collected.

A study was made in Hampton Roads, Virginia, to characterize the suspended matter and to investigate its relationship to the light attenuation coefficient. The study gives a detailed description of the seston and its variations with time and space. An evaluation of the light attenuation coefficient as an indicator of seston distributional parameters was made.

The distribution of the suspended matter is obtained through gravimetric, Coulter counter and microscopic analyses. Microscopic analysis is employed to determine the composition of the seston and ATP determinations give the amount of living biomass. We have significantly increased our analytical capabilities this year by developing a cooperative project with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and continuing our cooperative program with E.P.A. We also were able to derive significant benefit from the reviews of the Pollution Abatement Project written by Clair Sawyer and Charles Goldman. The washing of a solute from filter cakes was investigated for both saturated and unsaturated washing conditions. Systems used in this experimental study were 0.065 NaCl solution as the filtrate in an aluminum hydrate filter cake and 0.1 Normal HCL solution as the filtrate in a column packed with glass beads. The filtrate concentration as a function of the flow rate of wash water and of the volume of effluent from the packed bed was measured. The Buffalo River originates in the Ozark plateau in Newton County, Arkansas. This magnificent Ozarkian wilderness river is about 238 km long and flows north-eastward to its confluence with the White River. The Buffalo River drains 3,465 km2 and has some 30 named tributaries. In its upper reaches, huge multicolored cliffs extend nearly 213 m above the river as it flows through mountainous countryside which reaches an elevation of 732 m. Within its watershed may be found 700 species of plant life, a habitat for 250 species of birds, and a variety of game animals. In its aquatic habitat …

Neotanais persephone, a new species of tanaidacean and the first reported from the Puerto Rico Trench, is described and figured. The material represents the greatest depth record for the order from the Atlantic Ocean and for the genus worldwide. The species is placed within the americanus group of species and is most similar to N. hadalis Wolff. Rudimentary oostegites are present on several copulatory males.

This project is a study of the relationships of weather variables and non-productive classroom behaviors. Four observers recorded behaviors of over one hundred elementary students for a period of fifty days.

The weather variables used in this study may be divided into two major categories; visible and invisible atmospheric conditions. Visible atmospheric conditions included classifying the atmosphere as sunny, fair, cloudy, stormy, rainy, and phases of the moon. Invisible conditions recorded were temperature and barometric pressure.

A new analytical method has been developed which provides researchers with another way to measure orthophosphate content in aqueous samples. The reaction gas chromatographic system was capable of analyzing orthophosphate in the range from 0.25 - 5.0 micrograms of P in 50 microliters of aqueous sample. Flame ionization proved to be the most successful detector. The primary advantage of this technique was the small volume of sample required.

Lake Mead is a deep, subtropical, moderately productive, desert impoundment with a negative heterograde oxygen profile occurring during; the summer stratification. investigations of the Boulder Basin of Lake Mead by the University of Nevada were initiated in November 1971. The primary objective of the study was to determine what effects industrial and sewage effluent from the Las Vegas metropolitan area, discharged into Las Vegas Bay, have had on the water quality and limnological conditions of Boulder Basin. Data from the 1975-76 period are presented in detail, with earlier data included in the summaries and discussions.

In this project a stochastic model, using Semi-Markov Processes, was developed to simulate daily rainfall patterns in Kentucky. This model contains many of the currently used models as special cases and is applicable at any station in Kentucky as well as elsewhere.

For use in Kentucky an 8 state Semi-Markov Process is developed and the parameters of the model are determined from historical rainfall data. The model is tested at 4 different stations in Kentucky and the simulated and actual rainfall processes are found to be in good agreement.
