Bahamas Bibliography : A List Of Citations For Scientific, Engineering And Historical Articles Pertaining To The Bahama Islands, Carol Fang, W. Harrison
Reports
Specialized bibliographies are sometimes needed in connection with the research studies being pursued at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. The Bahamas Bibliography arose out of the needs of marine geologists, biologists and physical oceanographers engaged in studies of beaches, fishes and inlet currents in the Bahama Islands. Although the present bibliography may suffer from completeness, it significantly surpasses in number of citations the only other known bibliography of like kind.
Effect Of Increasing Depth On Salinity In The James River Estuary, Maynard M. Nichols
Effect Of Increasing Depth On Salinity In The James River Estuary, Maynard M. Nichols
VIMS Books and Book Chapters
The effects of channel deepening on the salinity and density flow in the James River estuary, Virginia, were studied to predict changes that might affect oyster production. A hydraulic model with 1: 1,000 horizontal and l: 100 vertical scales was employed to integrate three-dimensional changes in salinity and velocity through reaches of variable bottom geometry. After natural characteristics of the tide, current, and salinity were reproduced in the model, tests were run at three levels of steady river inflow, before and after a 3-meter channel deepening. Results were combined with corollary field observations to evaluate changes in present-day ecological conditions. …
Sediments Of The James River Estuary, Virginia, Maynard M. Nichols
Sediments Of The James River Estuary, Virginia, Maynard M. Nichols
VIMS Books and Book Chapters
The James River estuary of the Chesapeake Bay region follows the course of a former river valley drowned within the last 9,000 years by the most recent rise of sea level. The floor is shaped into a central channel bordered by submerged shoals. Observations show suspended sediment is transported mainly by alternating tidal currents and secondarily by the net nontidal estuarine circulation. Transport results in a sequence of grain size distributions reflecting the mixing of two textural end members, clay and sand.
Silty clay is deposited in the river and upper estuary, whereas sand occurs near the mouth. Transitional types, …
Obstacles To Economic Progress In Ethiopia's Red Sea Coast And Gulf Of Aden, Abraham Alemayehu
Obstacles To Economic Progress In Ethiopia's Red Sea Coast And Gulf Of Aden, Abraham Alemayehu
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
Ethiopia is a coastal state whose overall economic progress has been and still is being affected by a number of coastal and related obstacles. This paper will attempt to discuss each and every one of these obstacles and other relevant aspects in order to justify as much as possible Ethiopia's lack of progress in economic development. By no means these are not the only obstacles responsible for affecting the country's entire economic progress. The obstacles that I would like to present here are only those which are more or less directly related to maritime, geographical and geopolitical problems on the …
The U.S. Merchant Fleet: Patterns For The Seventies (U), Glenn Edward Whisler Jr.
The U.S. Merchant Fleet: Patterns For The Seventies (U), Glenn Edward Whisler Jr.
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
An analysis of recent U.S. maritime legislation in order to predict the possible effect it may have on our merchant fleet growth patterns for the seventies. Major attention is devoted to the Merchant Marine Act of 1970 which the Administration and Congress hopes will halt the continuing decline of the U.S. merchant fleet. The investigation is limited to the shipbuilding industry and is concerned primarily with government incentives, provided to both shipbuilders and shipowners, designed to stimulate new building programs. This study finds that the U.S. merchant fleet will experience a healthy growth during this decade as a result of …
The Navy And Aquidneck Island: A Study In The Coastal Zone, Paul Lewis Cohen
The Navy And Aquidneck Island: A Study In The Coastal Zone, Paul Lewis Cohen
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
Navy fleet operating bases are all located within the coastal zone; a unique area neither land nor sea. This paper opens with a brief review of the nature of the coastal zone, followed by a discussion of regulations pending in Congress and an example of one state's coastal zone legislation. Navy policies regarding environmental factors that must be considered in land use management are also discussed. Interactions of the U.S. Naval Base, Newport, and non-Navy interests with the coastal zone of Aquidneck Island are examined to develop a model for analysis of these relationships.

Range And Optimum Growth Concentrations Of Phosphate And Nitrate For Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Thomas E. Hill
Masters Theses
A study was conducted on the alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii to determine the range and optimum growth concentrations of phosphate and nitrate. There are only a few species of algae for which this type of data is known. Inorganic nutritional data is basic to the understanding of the complexities of phytoplankton ecology and eutrophication.
The "plus" strain of this heterothallic alga was cultured in a TRIS-buffered inorganic medium with various concentrations of sodium phosphate and potassium nitrate and adjusted to a pH of 7.4. The axenic cultures were evaluated at the end of 6 days with a spectrophotometer, at a wavelength …

Distribution, Growth, Selective Feeding, And Energy Transformations Of Young-Of-The-Year Blueback Herring, Alosa Aestivalis (Mitchill), In The James River, Virginia, Richard Greig Burbidge
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Energy transformations and budget are computers for young-of-the-year blueback herring, Alosa aestivalis, in the James River, Virginia. Distribution, growth, and selective feeding are described. Fish and zooplankton collections were made at five stations in the main channel of the James RIver from June through November 1969. Two 24hr series of samples were collected in July and October 1968 in the Potomac River. A direct relationship existed between standing cropos of zooplankton and distribution, growth, and feeding of blueback herring. Zooplankton densities were highest upstream, where food consumption and growth rates were correspondingly highest. A progressive downstream decrease and upstream increase …
A Report On The Condition Of The Gascoyne Catchment, D G. Wilcox, E A. Mckinnon
A Report On The Condition Of The Gascoyne Catchment, D G. Wilcox, E A. Mckinnon
Resource management technical reports
Severe flooding in Carnarvon followed heavy rains on the Gascoyne Catchment in February 1961. The flooding and erosion were extensive enough to suggest that run-off from the catchment was excessive. Lightfoot (1961)* reported that excess run-off was due to degradation of the catchment area. This report will describe the catchment area in terms of the degradation of its rangeland and its susceptibility to erosion.
Acute Toxicity Of Unbleached Kraft Mill Effluent (Ukme) To The Oppossum Shrimp, Neomysis Americana Smith, Fred Jacobs
Acute Toxicity Of Unbleached Kraft Mill Effluent (Ukme) To The Oppossum Shrimp, Neomysis Americana Smith, Fred Jacobs
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
96-hour TL50 values of unbleached kraft mill effluent (UKME) for Neornysis arnericana were found to range from concentrations of 3.29 to 6.85% at 26-28 C and 3.90 to 7.30% at 16-18 C. Differences between batches of effluent proved insignificant in experiments at each temperature regime. Furthermore, UKME did not lose its toxicity, when stored for 5 to 7 days at 4 C. A concentration of 20% effluent killed 100% of the organisms in 8 of the 12 bioassays. Slope functions and confidence limits of TL50 were calculated. This dissertation is from the Joint Program Degree from the College of William …

Storm-Wave And Storm-Surge Modification Of Virginia's Ocean Coast, Wyman Harrison
Storm-Wave And Storm-Surge Modification Of Virginia's Ocean Coast, Wyman Harrison
Reports
The purpose of this study was to begin work on a method for operational prediction of storm-induced beach changes. The thought was to use wind and storm-surge data that are predicted on a routine basis by the National Weather Service, NOAA, and it was felt that if such a procedure could be developed, it would be possible to provide estimates of beach erosion or deposition as part of routine weather forecasts whenever storms threatened. It was also hoped that it might be possible to make estimates of shoreline erosion during previous years by using historical storm data in the prediction …

Adsorption Of Sulfur Dioxide On Douglas Fir Woodchips, Uen-Ping David Wang
Adsorption Of Sulfur Dioxide On Douglas Fir Woodchips, Uen-Ping David Wang
Dissertations and Theses
In recent years, people have raised their alertness to the hazard of air pollution. Sulfur dioxide is one of the most dangerous chemical compounds among those air pollutants. A study on removing sulfur dioxide from an air stream by adsorption using wood chips as the adsorbent is presented in this thesis.
The reason for using wood as an adsorbent is that wood is a porous material and possesses a large surface of cell cavities which can hold a great amount of moisture. As sulfur dioxide gas is passed through the wood bed, it would be either condensed in the cell …

A Two-Layer Model Of The North Atlantic Thermocline, P. P. Niiler, Edward R. Simco, R. Larue
Faculty Articles
A two-layer model of mid-oceanic thermocline is developed, and a comparison of the depth and temperature of the thermocline in this model is made with a root-mean-square description of the hydrographic structure of the North Atlantic. It is shown that the Sverdrup balance is maintained within the rms errors, and the entire estimated heat flux from the atmosphere is used to produce the observed density changes along the path of persistent flow.

A Study Of Phytoplankton Dynamics In Lake Fayetteville As A Means Of Assessing Water Quality, Richard L. Meyer
Technical Reports
Phytoplankton community was analyzed for seasonal and vertical distribution in Lake Fayetteville. This northwest Arkansas reservoir maintains a stable water level and chemical input with a relatively constant, slow overflow. Its source is groundwater seepage through a calcareous substrate with little contribution from the limited drainage basin. Phytoplankton community development with its associations and assemblages, chlorophylls -a, -b and c, and biomass distribution are described. The seasonal cycles of the chemical parameters NH4-N, NO2-N, NO3-N, ortho-phosphate, silicon, pH, HCO3- and total-alkalinity plus oxygen are described and discussed. The physical parameters of temperature, light and climate are included. The interaction of …

Interim Report On Water Quality Investigation Degray Reservoir, Arkansas, J. Nix
Technical Reports
Impoundment of the Caddo River near Arkadelphia, Arkansas began in August, 1969. Detailed patterns of the dissolved oxygen distribution in this reservoir are presented for the period September, 1969 through April, 1971. Although the reservoir had not reached normal pool elevation, thermal stratification accompanied by severe hypolimnic oxygen depletion has been observed. The dissolved oxygen data show that an under flow occurs in the fall of the year and carries dissolved oxygen into the hypolimnic zone. The gradients of dissolved oxygen concentration observed during the winter indicate that the reservoir does not undergo complete mixing. A short summary of the …

Surface Observations, Ground Truth And Data : Nasa-Usgs Mission 144 : Chesapeake Bay Region, Sept. 22-30, 1970, Maynard M. Nichols
Reports
Surface observations of coastal waters and "ground. truth" data were obtained to aid interpretation and analyses of overflight photography and imagery. Among the broad objectives of the mission was to investigate the potential of high-altitude, multispectral photography as a tool for the improved planning necessary to cope with multidisciplinary problems within the coastal zone, specifically with regard to:
1. The inventory and evaluation of the central Atlantic coastal area natural resources;
2. The assessment of human and natural degradation of these resources;
3. The feasibility of monitoring resource allocation and management, including land use categories and the impact of urbanization …
