Benthic Infauna Of Eelgrass, Zostera Marina, Beds, Robert Joseph Orth Jan 1971

Benthic Infauna Of Eelgrass, Zostera Marina, Beds, Robert Joseph Orth

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The infauna of Zostera beds in the Chesapeake Bay-York River estuary and Chincoteague Bay was sampled in March and July using a corer. Sediments were fine sand or very fine sand. Sorting of sediments varied from poorly sorted to moderately well-sorted and was related to the density of Zostera at the respective stations. A total of 17 macroinvertebrate taxa was collected. Species abundance decreased up the estuary and there was a significant interaction in the number of species between stations and seasons. Faunal similarity of the areas sampled, as measured by three indices, indicated that the infauna of most Zostera …

Nutrient-Density Relationships In The Western North Atlantic Between Cape Lookout And Bermuda, Unnsteinn Stefánsson, Larry P. Atkinson Jan 1971

Nutrient-Density Relationships In The Western North Atlantic Between Cape Lookout And Bermuda, Unnsteinn Stefánsson, Larry P. Atkinson

CCPO Publications

A study of the nutrient-density relationships of Sargasso Sea water reveals a close correlation; Gulf Stream waters are anomalously higher and more variable in nutrients for a given density. Nutrient anomalies can be used in the same way as oxygen anomalies to map the distribution of Caribbean water in sections across the Gulf Stream. They show that contributions of Caribbean water to the Gulf Stream vary greatly from time to time. Oxidative ratios of ΔO : ΔN : ΔP = (−233) : 16.3 : 1.0 were derived from the correlation between oxygen anomalies and nutrients anomalies of Gulf Stream water …

The Distribution And Ecology Of The Gammaridea (Crustacea : Amphipoda) Of The Lower Chesapeake Estuaries, James Feely, Marvin L. Wass Jan 1971

The Distribution And Ecology Of The Gammaridea (Crustacea : Amphipoda) Of The Lower Chesapeake Estuaries, James Feely, Marvin L. Wass

Reports

Gammarid amphipods of three tidal rivers entering Chesapeake Bay were studied for ten months, particularly in the York River where 40 species were record during the period. Several species moved up or down the rivers with changing salinity. The more abundant species had longer breeding seasons. The number of described species from lower Chesapeake Bay is now 42 and the presence of 10 undescribed species and of several which bracket the region indicates that much remains to be learned about amphipods in the Bay. Nineteen of these have a boreal affinity and seven are limited to the Virginian subprovince. A …

Digital Systems For On-Site Collection For Water Quality Analysis, M. K. Testerman Nov 1970

Digital Systems For On-Site Collection For Water Quality Analysis, M. K. Testerman

Technical Reports

A prototype system has been developed for recording and transmitting digital data at a remote water quality monitoring station in an unattended manner. As many as eight analog signals from transducers, which measure water quality characteristics such as dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, chlorides, conductivity, redox, and turbidity, are converted to digital signals and recorded in binary coded decimal format on magnetic tape. This unit may be contacted from a central station for playback of the day's recording. The transmitted data can be recorded at the central station by teletype. Each data record includes a time-of-day "word" so that all data …

An Evaluation Of An Electromagnetic Current Meter For Study Of Water Particle Motion, George Milton Hecker

OES Theses and Dissertations

A new sophisticated electromagnetic current meter was laboratory and field tested in a wide variety of applications, ranging from measurement of net bottom currents (primarily tidal origin) on the continental shelf, to horizontal and vertical components of wave induced orbital motion of waves with periods as small as one second.

These tests indicate that this instrument is capable of performing to at least the following specifications, subject to the comments which follow:

Speed range: Accuracy: Threshold: 0 to + 5 knots + 0.2 knots + 0.02 knots Response time: 0.25 sec. Direction: -+ 7 degrees Depth: '0 to 42 feet …

Erasure Of Sediment Surface Features By Mellita Quinquiesperforata (Leske), Walter Richard Boehmer Jul 1970

Erasure Of Sediment Surface Features By Mellita Quinquiesperforata (Leske), Walter Richard Boehmer

OES Theses and Dissertations

Erasure of sediment surface features by individuals of the species, Mellita guinguiesperforata, observed in this study suggests that all members of the sub-order, Scutellina, are able to erase sediment surface features. Sweep time, the time needed to erase the surface features of an area, depends on the population density, individual size, and speed of movement of the sand dollars. Assuming their pattern of movement as random, the following equation can be used to determine sand dollar sweep time,

T - 3.2 N-0.76 (W / S) (A/ W2 )1.21

where T is sweep time, N is the …

The Historic End Of Closed Seas, James Edward Grise May 1970

The Historic End Of Closed Seas, James Edward Grise

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The purpose of this paper is to consider the rather vague claims to closed seas by the Soviet Union and to determine what direction these claims are taking. The first part of the paper deals with the history and development of the closed seas concept and expands it into the present day claims in this area. It attempts to show how some of the past claims have remained over the years and how some of the others have progressed to claims of historic waters. In the final section an attempt is made to show some method for resolving some of …

The Effects Of A Twelve Mile Limit For The Territorial Sea, Richard J. Brennan May 1970

The Effects Of A Twelve Mile Limit For The Territorial Sea, Richard J. Brennan

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

A treaty setting the limit of territorial waters at twelve miles will probably be negotiated and accepted by most nations in the near future. In areas not involving straits, this limit will have both beneficial and harmful effects, but it appears to be the best solution that can be achieved. However, in order to ensure that confidence in the free use of the oceans is maintained, the United States should attempt to have included in the treaty a provision for a channel of high seas through international straits. Agreement to such a provision will be difficult to obtain and if …

Planning Aspects Of Pollution Control, Donald T. Cannell May 1970

Planning Aspects Of Pollution Control, Donald T. Cannell

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Pollution control and abatement has become a national social goal but improvement impeded by lack of adequate resource allocation. The uncertainties of technology, financing, nature, politics, law and institutionalism must be evaluated by corporate and government planners to find long-run solutions. The evaluation of the sensitivity of planning recommendations to the uncertainty involved in this multi-variate problem, along with national economic shifts caused by alternative abatement funding programs is critical in formulating the “best” plan to ensure success of the national program.

Natural Sovereignty On The High Seas, Thomas Arthur Marnane May 1970

Natural Sovereignty On The High Seas, Thomas Arthur Marnane

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The purpose of this paper is to examine a current dispute involving resources in the sea, determine the issues involved, and hypothesize a solution. Specifically, the dispute chosen involves Latin American claims to extensive sovereign fishery rights in adjacent coastal waters and objections to these claims. The United States and the parties to a declaration made in Santiago, Chile, in 1882, Chile, Ecuador, and Peru, have been chosen as most representative of the opposing positions. The International Court of Justice, primarily utilizing as a framework for analysis the dicta, findings, and opinions in their February 1969 Judgment in the North …

Recommendations For A United States Position Regarding Delimitation Of The Outer Boundary Of The "Legal" Continental Shelves, Brian K. Hannula Apr 1970

Recommendations For A United States Position Regarding Delimitation Of The Outer Boundary Of The "Legal" Continental Shelves, Brian K. Hannula

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The Convention on the Continental Shelf has come under attack because it does not establish a precise outer boundary for the "legal" continental shelf. It is the author's opinion that the United States should propose or support a revision of the Convention which would rectify this situation. A suitable delimitation proposal must have considerable domestic support and should represent the best compromise between opposing domestic views. A proposed revision of the Convention must, also, have strong international support if it is to be adopted. Each nation will determine a preferred delimitation which depends on the configuration of its own continental …

Strategic And Related Considerations In The Development Of A Northwest Passage, Norman E. Larsen Apr 1970

Strategic And Related Considerations In The Development Of A Northwest Passage, Norman E. Larsen

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Environmental factors which have impeded activity in the Arctic, in the past, remain significant barriers to the development of the Northwest Passage. Consequently, enormous capital as well as bilateral planning and cooperation between United States and Canadian public and private agencies will be required if significant progress is to be achieved. The resource wealth of the Arctic promises the economic incentives essential to the eventual development of a transportation system to permit exploitation of these resources. Development of a commercially feasible Northwest Passage is both economically and strategically desirable. However, immense physical and engineering problems remain to be solved.

Reducing Evaporation From Farm Dams : A Progress Report December 1969, I A F Laing Jan 1970

Reducing Evaporation From Farm Dams : A Progress Report December 1969, I A F Laing

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

IN most seasons in the Western Australian Wheatbelt evaporation reduction techniques rate a low priority due to either the expense or the relative inefficiency of the techniques.

It is generally agreed that a similar investment in deepening or enlarging existing dams, or making new dams larger from the outset, is likely to be more profitable.

The Growing Season, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia, Bureau Of Meteorology Jan 1970

The Growing Season, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia, Bureau Of Meteorology

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

IN AUSTRALIA the seasons of summer, autumn, winter and spring do not have the importance that they have in the Old World, and though summer and winter weather are quite different, there is not the obvious difference in autumn and spring conditions that there is in the colder countries.

This is largely due to the difference in vegetation and in its life cycle in the different places.

Likelihood Of Drought Years In South-Western Australia : How Often Can Droughts Such As That Of 1969 Be Expected In Western Australia's Farming Areas?, Eugene Adsil Fitzpatrick Jan 1970

Likelihood Of Drought Years In South-Western Australia : How Often Can Droughts Such As That Of 1969 Be Expected In Western Australia's Farming Areas?, Eugene Adsil Fitzpatrick

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Because of the serious consequences of drought to individual farmers and to Western Australia's economy, it is worth making an early appraisal of the 1969 rainfall conditions that led to the State's most recent drought in an attempt to estimate how often such seasons might be expected in the agricultural areas.

Annual Precipitation Regime Of Minnesota, Richard H. Skaggs Jan 1970

Annual Precipitation Regime Of Minnesota, Richard H. Skaggs

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Eigenvalues and eigenvectors computed on 30-year normals indicate an unusually high spatial homogeneity of annual precipitation curve shape in Minnesota. The generalized shape accounts for about 99 per cent of the observed variance and meshes well with the overall pattern of the central United States. Interesting deviations do occur, however. These deviations suggest fundamental questions about precipitation-causing processes which should be investigated in the future.

Distribution Of Trace Elements In Impoundments, J. Nix Jan 1970

Distribution Of Trace Elements In Impoundments, J. Nix

Technical Reports

An investigation of the trace element content of two impoundments on the Ouachita River, Arkansas, was conducted. Common water quality parameters were followed in the reservoirs in an effort to determine the factors which were influencing the trace element concentration. The following trace metals were determined in both the particulate phase (retained by a 0.45 micron filter) and the soluble phase (passed by a 0.45 micron filter): iron, manganese, copper, cobalt, nickel, lead, chromium, and zinc. These measurements were made periodically for one and a half years. Results indicate that the chemical regime of the impoundments which were studied was …

Part I - Controlling The Soil Moisture Environment Of Transpiring Plants, Part Ii - Prediction Of Leaf Temperature Under Natural Atmospheric Conditions, Charles T. Haan, Billy J. Barfield, Robert Edling Jan 1970

Part I - Controlling The Soil Moisture Environment Of Transpiring Plants, Part Ii - Prediction Of Leaf Temperature Under Natural Atmospheric Conditions, Charles T. Haan, Billy J. Barfield, Robert Edling

KWRRI Research Reports

Part I

A technique for controlling the soil moisture potential in the root zone of transpiring plants was developed. The method uses the principles of unsaturated flow through a porous media to develop the desired moisture potential. In the case of non-steady state transpiration, the maximum possible fluctuation in the soil moisture potential can be determined by the techniques presented.

Part II

Two implicit leaf temperature prediction equations were derived from the energy balance approach. The equations define sensible and latent heat transfer from a plant population as a two step process:

  1. Transfer between the plant leaf and the canopy …

The Impact Of Conflicting Uses Of The Coastal Zone On Naval Planning And Policy, Thomas M. Ward Jr. Jan 1970

The Impact Of Conflicting Uses Of The Coastal Zone On Naval Planning And Policy, Thomas M. Ward Jr.

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

A brief review of the origin of the Navy's coastal real estate holdings and a method of approach to analysis of the present conflicts of multiple use of the coastal zone isused to assess the needs for continued use of these holdingsand provide valid arguments for retention of those that are required. The study also presents a method of analysis that could provide a means for anticipating or resolving conflicting uses of Navy held real estate. The pressure created by an increasing population combined with a reduction of the armed forces necessitates a review of all Navy coastal zone property …

Dry Season In The Eastern And North-Eastern Wheatbelt, George Henry Burvill Jan 1970

Dry Season In The Eastern And North-Eastern Wheatbelt, George Henry Burvill

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The drought of 1969 ended an 11-year run of good seasons in the eastern and north-eastern wheatbelt. Good years usually have above average rainfall; wheat yields and pasture growth are greatly reduced if rains are well below average. Eighty years records show that half the years must be expected to be below average and about one-third could be well below. This area produces one-third of the State's wheat and has 9 per cent, of its sheep.
