Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are among the most energetic and violent events in the universe, characterized by sudden and intense emission of gamma rays lasting from a fraction of a second to several minutes. The primary focus of this thesis is to study gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), with a specific emphasis on GRB190114C. GRB190114C is a long-duration GRB that was detected on January 14, 2019, by the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) and the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT). It had a T90 duration of 116 s and a redshift of z = 0.4245, which corresponds to a luminosity distance of …

Design Modular Command And Data Handling Subsystem Hardware Architectures, Abdullah Alsalmani Jun 2023

Design Modular Command And Data Handling Subsystem Hardware Architectures, Abdullah Alsalmani

Theses

Over the past few years, On-Board Computing Systems for satellites have been facing a limited level of modularity. Modularity is the ability to reuse and reconstruct the system from a set of predesigned units, with minimal additional engineering effort. CDHS hardware systems currently available have a limited ability to scale with mission needs. This thesis addresses the integration of smaller form factor CDHS modules used for nanosatellites with the larger counterparts that are used for larger missions. In particular, the thesis discusses the interfacing between Modular Computer Systems based on Open Standard commonly used in large spacecrafts and PC/104 used …

Cloud Tracking Winds On Mars Using Emm-Exi Imaging, Shaimaa Ahmed Alblooki Jun 2023

Cloud Tracking Winds On Mars Using Emm-Exi Imaging, Shaimaa Ahmed Alblooki

Theses

The Martian atmospheric wind structure is a major unknown in our understanding of Mars’ climate because it is difficult to measure wind remotely. The Emirates eXploration Imager (EXI) instrument on board the Emirates Mars Mission (EMM) takes visible and ultraviolet images of the whole hemisphere of the planet at a time, and can capture complete weather systems at once, along with their evolution over time. This project uses EXI 320 nm observations to measure winds on Mars using Correlation Imaging Velocimetry (CIV), a cloud tracking method based on software developed for laboratory fluid dynamics experiments, and with significant heritage in …

Finite Element Analysis Of A Coconut (Cocos Nucifera L.) Climbing Mechanism, Arjay O. Afan, Omar F. Zubia, Adrian A. Borja, Ralph Kristoffer B. Gallegos

The Philippine Agricultural Scientist

A coconut climber mechanism was subjected to Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to improve its overall design and analyze its strength characteristics. The von Mises stress, total deformation, and factor of safety were evaluated using static structural analysis for the seat and pedal assemblies of the mechanism. The design has a minimum yielding factor of safety of 7.03 for the seat assembly and 12.09 for the pedal assembly. If aluminum is used as an alternative to steel, the prototype's weight can be reduced to at least 64.56% without compromising its strength properties. The weight reduction by using aluminum is expected to …

Exceptional Point Based Lattice Gyroscopes, Masoumeh Izadparast, Gururaj V. Naik, Henry O. Everitt, Hamidreza Ramezani

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

Ring laser gyroscopes (RLGs) based on non-Hermitian exceptional points (EPs) have garnered much recent interest due to their exceptional sensitivity. Such gyroscopes typically consist of two-ring laser resonators, one with loss and one with an equal amount of optical gain. The coupling strength between these ring resonators is a key parameter determining the sensitivity of EP-based RLGs. Here we explore how the exceptional sensitivity demonstrated in this coupled dimer may be further enhanced by adding more dimers in an array. Specifically, we propose two types of ring laser gyroscope lattice arrays, each composed of N coupled dimers arrayed serially or …

Photon Propagation In Magnetized Dense Quark Matter. A Possible Solution For The Missing Pulsar Problem., Efrain J. Ferrer Jun 2023

Photon Propagation In Magnetized Dense Quark Matter. A Possible Solution For The Missing Pulsar Problem., Efrain J. Ferrer

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper it is reviewed the topological properties and possible astrophysical consequences of a spatially inhomogeneous phase of quark matter, known as the Magnetic Dual Chiral Density Wave (MDCDW) phase, that can exist at intermediate baryon density in the presence of a magnetic field. Going beyond mean-field approximation, it is shown how linearly polarized electromagnetic waves penetrating the MDCDW medium can mix with the phonon fluctuations to give rise to two hybridized modes of propagation called as axion polaritons because of their similarity with certain modes found in condensed matter for topological magnetic insulators. The formation of axion polaritons …

Stability Of Retinol In Liposomes As Measured By Fluorescence Lifetime Spectroscopy And Flim, Louis Sumrall, L. Smith, Elmukhtar Ehmed Alhatmi, Yekaterina G. Chmykh, D. Mitchell, Jay Nadeau

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Retinol shows complex photophysical properties that make it potentially useful as an exogenous or endogenous probe of membrane microenvironment, but it has not been fully explored. In this study, we use bulk fluorescence lifetime measurements and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) to examine the stability of retinol in phosphatidylcholine (PC) multilamellar and unilamellar vesicles with and without cholesterol. We find that both light and exposure to ambient temperature and oxygen contribute to retinol degradation, with the addition of an antioxidant such as butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) essential to provide stability, especially in the absence of cholesterol. With exposure to ultraviolet light …

This paper is a literature review on the possible mechanisms behind the FLASH effect and why such research can advance the world of radiology treatment by modifying current clinical linear accelerators to produce ultra-high doses of radiation. Radiation Therapy, also known as external Beam Radiation Therapy, is a common type of cancer treatment. Globally, cancer is the second-leading cause of death, but has seen an increase in survival rates over the past couple of years. Cancer can develop in almost any part of the body since cancer is defined as uncontrolled cell growth. The FLASH Effect is seen when treating …

Thermal, Magnetic, And Electrical Properties Of Thin Films And Nanostructures: From Magnetic Insulators To Organic Thermoelectrics, Michael J. M. Roos Jun 2023

Thermal, Magnetic, And Electrical Properties Of Thin Films And Nanostructures: From Magnetic Insulators To Organic Thermoelectrics, Michael J. M. Roos

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Modern fabrication and growth techniques allow for the development of increasingly smaller and more complex solid state structures, the characterization of which require highly specialized measurement platforms. In this dissertation I present the development of techniques and instrumentation used in magnetic, thermal, and electrical property measurements of thin films and nanostructures. The understanding of trapped-flux induced artifacts in SQUID magnetometry of large paramagnetic substrates allows for the resolution of increasingly small moments. Using these methods, the antiferromagnetic coupling of the interface between a Y3Fe5O12 film and Gd3Ga5O12substrate is quantitatively …

Non-Degenerate Two-Photon Absorption And Excited State Line Shapes In Alkali Vapors, Timothy M. True

Theses and Dissertations

The rubidium 5S-5D two-photon transitions were probed between 758-798 nm, where a six order of magnitude change in the cross section was observed and the polarization dependence was seen explicitly. Collisional rates are measured in cesium on the 6P-9S and 5D-10F transitions, with broadening rates as large as 710 MHz/Torr and shifting rates as large as 273 MHz/Torr. We observe Stark broadening on the cesium 5D-10F line shape, with Lorentzian width increasing from 200 MHz to 40 GHz. The influence of electron impact is discussed under these conditions and with 0-20 Torr of helium. Cascade amplified spontaneous emission is seen …

A Monte-Carlo Simulation Of Gamma Rays In A Sodium Iodide Detector, Ben Kessler Jun 2023

A Monte-Carlo Simulation Of Gamma Rays In A Sodium Iodide Detector, Ben Kessler

Physics

Gamma rays principally interact with matter through Compton scattering, photoelectric effect, pair production, and triplet production. The focus of this simulation is to study the theoretical energy spectrum created by gamma rays from a Cesium-137 source, which produces gamma photons with an energy of 0.662 MeV. At this energy level, most interactions are results of Compton scatters and the photoelectric effect. Therefore, this simulation only models those two effects on gamma rays. Using Monte Carlo methods and the Metropolis algorithm to sample the probability distributions of the two effects allowed for the simulation of gamma rays in a Sodium Iodide …

Diffusion-Driven Aggregation Of Particles In Quasi-2d Membranes, Oscar Gullickson Rausis Jun 2023

Diffusion-Driven Aggregation Of Particles In Quasi-2d Membranes, Oscar Gullickson Rausis

Physics

Many biological membranes can be modeled as two-dimensional (2D) viscous fluid sheets surrounded by three-dimensional (3D) fluids of different viscosity. Such membranes are dubbed quasi-2D as they exhibit properties of both 2D and 3D fluids. The Saffman length is a parameter that describes the energy exchange between the membrane and bulk fluids and controls the cross-over from 2D to 3D hydrodynamics. We aim to model diffusion-driven aggregation of particles embedded in a quasi-2D membrane. It is known that hydrodynamic interactions between solute particles significantly reduce their aggregation rate in 3D fluids. It is expected that in quasi-2D membranes the reduction …

Optimization Of Flagellar Locomotion In The Low Reynolds Number Regime, Aidan M. Trodden, Aidan M. Trodden Jun 2023

Optimization Of Flagellar Locomotion In The Low Reynolds Number Regime, Aidan M. Trodden, Aidan M. Trodden

Physics

This report investigates the computational and theoretical techniques - modeled by E. Lauga and C. Eloy - used to optimize the shape of an activated flagellum for enhanced cell motility. Cell motility is ubiquitous and has a large affect on biological systems such as marine life ecosystems, reproduction, and infection. The physical principles governing flagellar propulsion are explored using computational fluid dynamics simulations, mathematical modeling, and the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) optimization algorithm. Through iterative refinement, we can identify optimized flagellar shapes that would minimize the energetic cost dependent on a single dimensionless sperm numbers (Sp). The computation of the …

Optimizing Solid Thermal Storage In Insulated Solar Electric Cookers, Stefan Avramov Jun 2023

Optimizing Solid Thermal Storage In Insulated Solar Electric Cookers, Stefan Avramov

Physics

Insulated Solar Electric Cookers, more commonly known by their acronym ISECookers, are an alternative to biomass cooking. The ISECooker in its simplest form is a solar panel connected to a heating element, in contact with a cooking pot in an insulated chamber. An aluminum puck can be heated as solid thermal storage (STS) for increased power and night time cooking. Power was limited to about 500 W by the interface between the STS and cookpot. Powdered graphite and silver were separately applied to increase thermal flow. However, the powdered graphite decreased the thermal flow, while powdered silver decreased the temperature …

Characterization Of Boreal-Arctic Vegetation Growth Phases And Active Soil Layer Dynamics In The High-Latitudes Of North America: A Study Combining Multi-Year In Situ And Satellite-Based Observations, Michael G. Brown Jun 2023

Characterization Of Boreal-Arctic Vegetation Growth Phases And Active Soil Layer Dynamics In The High-Latitudes Of North America: A Study Combining Multi-Year In Situ And Satellite-Based Observations, Michael G. Brown

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation examined the seasonal freeze/thaw activity in boreal-Arctic soils and vegetation physiology in Alaska, USA and Alberta, Canada, using in situ environmental measurements and passive microwave satellite observations. The boreal-Arctic high-latitudes have been experiencing ecosystem changes more rapidly in comparison to the rest of Earth due to the presently warming climatic conditions having a magnified effect over Polar Regions. Currently, the boreal-Arctic is a carbon sink; however, recent studies indicate a shift over the next century to become a carbon source. High-latitude vegetation and cold soil dynamics are influenced by climatic shifts and are largely responsible for the regions …

Hydrodynamic And Physicochemical Interactions Between An Active Janus Particle And An Inactive Particle, Jessica S. Rosenberg Jun 2023

Hydrodynamic And Physicochemical Interactions Between An Active Janus Particle And An Inactive Particle, Jessica S. Rosenberg

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Active matter is an area of soft matter science in which units consume energy and turn it into autonomous motion. Groups of these units – whether flocks of birds, bacterial colonies, or even collections of synthetically-made active particles – may exhibit complex behavior on large scales. While the large-scale picture is of great importance, so is the microscopic scale. Studying the individual particles that make up active matter will allow us to understand how they move, and whether and under what circumstances their activity can be controlled.

Here we delve into the world of active matter by studying colloidal-sized (100 …

Importance Of Vegetation In Tsunami Mitigation: Evidence From Large Eddy Simulations With Fluid-Structure Interactions, Abhishek Mukherjee May 2023

Importance Of Vegetation In Tsunami Mitigation: Evidence From Large Eddy Simulations With Fluid-Structure Interactions, Abhishek Mukherjee

Dissertations

Communities worldwide are increasingly interested in nature-based solutions like coastal forests for the mitigation of coastal risks. Still, it remains unclear how much protective benefit vegetation provides, particularly in the limit of highly energetic flows after tsunami impact. The present thesis, using a three-dimensional incompressible computational fluid dynamics model with a fluid-structure interaction approach, aims to quantify how energy reflection and dissipation vary with different degrees of rigidity and vegetation density of a coastal forest.

In this study, tree trunks are represented as cylinders, and the elastic modulus of hardwood trees such as pine or oak is used to characterize …

Modelling Hoe Performance With An Extended Source; Experimental Investigation Using Misaligned Point Sources, Jorge Lasarte, Kevin Murphy, Izabela Naydenova, Jesús Atencia, Mª Victoria Collados, Suzanne Martin

Conference Papers

Holographic Optical Elements (HOEs) have the potential to enable more compact, versatile and lightweight optical designs, but many challenges remain. Volume HOE’s have the advantage of high diffraction efficiency but they present both chromatic selectivity and chromatic dispersion which impact on their use with wide spectrum light sources. Single-colour LED sources have a narrow spectrum that reduces these issues and this makes them better suited for use with volume HOEs. However, the LED source size must be taken into consideration for compact volume HOE-LED systems. To investigate the design limits for compact HOE-LED systems, a theoretical and experimental study was …

Record High Room Temperature Resistance Switching In Ferroelectric-Gated Mott Transistors Unlocked By Interfacial Charge Engineering, Yifei Hao, Xuegang Chen, Le Zhang, Myung-Geun Han, Wei Wang, Yue-Wen Fang, Hanghui Chen, Yimei Zhu, Xia Hong May 2023

Record High Room Temperature Resistance Switching In Ferroelectric-Gated Mott Transistors Unlocked By Interfacial Charge Engineering, Yifei Hao, Xuegang Chen, Le Zhang, Myung-Geun Han, Wei Wang, Yue-Wen Fang, Hanghui Chen, Yimei Zhu, Xia Hong

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

The superior size and power scaling potential of ferroelectric-gated Mott transistors makes them promising building blocks for developing energyefficientmemory and logic applications in the post-Moore’s Law era. The close to metallic carrier density in the Mott channel, however, imposes the bottleneck for achieving substantial field effect modulation via a solid-state gate. Previous studies have focused on optimizing the thickness, charge mobility, and carrier density of single-layer correlated channels, which have only led to moderate resistance switching at room temperature. Here, we report a record high nonvolatile resistance switching ratio of 38,440% at 300 K in a prototype Mott transistor consisting …

Search For Heavy Resonances And Quantum Black Holes In Eμ, Eτ, And Μτ Final States In Proton-Proton Collisions At √S = 13 Tev, A. Tumasyan

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

A search is reported for heavy resonances and quantum black holes decaying into eμ, eτ, and μτ final states in proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC during 2016–2018 at √s = 13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. The eμ, eτ, and μτ invariant mass spectra are reconstructed, and no evidence is found for physics beyond the standard model. Upper limits are set at 95% confidence level on the product of the cross section and branching fraction for lepton flavor violating signals. Three benchmark signals are studied: resonant τ sneutrino …

A short peptide, FHHF-11, was designed to change stiffness as a function of pH due to changing degree of protonation of histidines. As pH changes in the physiologically relevant range, G′ was measured at 0 Pa (pH 6) and 50,000 Pa (pH 8). This peptide-based hydrogel is antimicrobial and cytocompatible with skin cells (fibroblasts). It was demonstrated that the incorporation of unnatural AzAla tryptophan analog residue improves the antimicrobial properties of the hydrogel. The material developed can have a practical application and be a paradigm shift in the approach to wound treatment, and it will improve healing outcomes for millions …

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Spin–orbit torques generated by a spin current are key to magnetic switching in spintronic applications. The polarization of the spin current dictates the direction of switching required for energy-efficient devices. Conventionally, the polarizations of these spin currents are restricted to be along a certain direction due to the symmetry of the material allowing only for efficient in-plane magnetic switching. Unconventional spin–orbit torques arising from novel spin current polarizations, however, have the potential to switch other magnetization orientations such as perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, which is desired for higher density spintronic-based memory devices. Here, it is demonstrated that low crystalline symmetry is …

Filaments And Their Application To Air Lasing, Spectroscopy, And Guided Discharge, Ali Rastegari May 2023

Filaments And Their Application To Air Lasing, Spectroscopy, And Guided Discharge, Ali Rastegari

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

Laser filamentation is a fascinating phenomenon that occurs when an intense laser beam travels through transparent materials, in particular air. At sufficiently high power (TW in the near IR, GW in the UV), instead of spreading out like a regular laser beam, something remarkable happens: the laser beam becomes tightly focused, creating a thin and intense column of light called a laser filament. Laser filamentation is characterized by two main properties: (I) a high-intensity core that remains narrow over long distances beyond the Rayleigh range and (II) a low-density plasma channel within the core. In recent years, laser filamentation has …

Tardys Quantifiers: Extracting Temporal And Reversible Dynamical Symmetries, Nhat Vu Minh Nguyen, Arjendu K. Pattanayak, Andres Aragoneses

2023 Symposium

One of the great challenges in complex and chaotic dynamics is to reveal the details of its underlying determinism. This can be manifest in the form of temporal correlations or structured patterns in the dynamics of a measurable variable. These temporal dynamical structures are sometimes a consequence of hidden global symmetries. Here we identify the temporal (approximate) symmetries of a semiconductor laser with external optical feedback, based on which we define the Temporal And Reversible DYnamical Symmetry (TARDYS) quantifiers to evaluate the relevance of specific temporal correlations in a time series. We show that these symmetries are also present in …

Ultrafast Electron Diffraction Instrument For Gas And Condensed Matter Samples, Yibo Wang, Sajib Kumar Saha, Tianlin Li, Yanwei Xiong, Kyle Wilkin, Anil Adhikari, Michael Loes, Jehad Abourahma, Xia Hong, S. Adenwalla, Alexander Sinitskii, Martin Centurion

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We report the modification of a gas phase ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) instrument that enables experiments with both gas and condensed matter targets, where a time-resolved experiment with sub-picosecond resolution is demonstrated with solid state samples. The instrument relies on a hybrid DC-RF acceleration structure to deliver femtosecond electron pulses on the target, which is synchronized with femtosecond laser pulses. The laser pulses and electron pulses are used to excite the sample and to probe the structural dynamics, respectively. The new system is added with capabilities to perform transmission UED on thin solid samples. It allows for cooling samples to …
