Extended very-high-energy (VHE; 0.1-100 TeV) γ-ray emission has been observed around several middle-aged pulsars and referred to as “TeV halos.” Their formation mechanism remains under debate. It is also unknown whether they are ubiquitous or related to a certain subgroup of pulsars. With 2321 days of observation, the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Gamma-Ray Observatory detected VHE γ-ray emission at the location of the radio-quiet pulsar PSR J0359+5414 with >6σ significance. By performing likelihood tests with different spectral and spatial models and comparing the TeV spectrum with multiwavelength observations of nearby sources, we show that this excess is consistent with …

In Fig. 3, the y axis titles were mistakenly written showing a single-differential cross section in either dimuon pT or rapidity, when in fact the cross section is normalized by both the pT and rapidity ranges used for a given measurement point. The corrected version is shown in the new Fig. 3 provided below.

The convection–cloud chamber enables measurement of aerosol and cloud microphysics, as well as their interactions, within a turbulent environment under steady-state conditions. Increasing the size of a convection–cloud chamber, while holding the imposed temperature difference constant, leads to increased Rayleigh, Reynolds and Nusselt numbers. Large–eddy simulation coupled with a bin microphysics model allows the influence of increased velocity, time, and spatial scales on cloud microphysical properties to be explored. Simulations of a convection–cloud chamber, with fixed aspect ratio and increasing heights of H = 1, 2, 4, and (for dry conditions only) 8 m are performed. The key findings are: …

3d-5d perovskite oxides, ABO3 (where A and B are 3d or 5d elements), form polar surfaces in the (001)- stacked thin films. As a result, the polar-polar (001) interface between two ABO3 insulators could create polar discontinuity potentially producing a two-dimensional electron gas of higher density and stronger spatial localization compared to the widely studied polar-nonpolar oxide interfaces, such as (001) LaAlO3/SrTiO3. Here, as a model system, we explore the interface between polar (001) TbScO3 and polar (001) KTaO3 using first-principles density functional theory. We find that the …

The proton light yield of liquid scintillators is an important property in the context of their use in large-scale neutrino experiments, with direct implications for neutrino-proton scattering measurements and the discrimination of fast neutrons from inverse β-decay coincidence signals. This work presents the first measurement of the proton light yield of a water-based liquid scintillator (WbLS) formulated from 5% linear alkyl benzene (LAB), at energies below 20 MeV, as well as a measurement of the proton light yield of a pure LAB + 2 g/L 2,5-diphenyloxazole (PPO) mixture (LABPPO). The measurements were performed using a double time-of-flight method and a …

The Standard Model predicts a long-range force, proportional to G2 F /r5, between fermions due to the exchange of a pair of neutrinos. This quantum force is feeble and has not been observed yet. In this paper, we compute this force in the presence of neutrino backgrounds, both for isotropic and directional background neutrinos. We find that for the case of directional background the force can have a 1/r dependence and it can be significantly enhanced compared to the vacuum case. In particular, background effects caused by reactor, solar, and supernova neutrinos enhance the force by many …

The inclusive electron neutrino charged-current cross section is measured in the NOvA near detector using 8.02×1020 protons-on-target in the NuMI beam. The sample of GeV electron neutrino interactions is the largest analyzed to date and is limited by ≃17% systematic rather than the ≃7.4% statistical uncertainties. The double-differential cross section in final-state electron energy and angle is presented for the first time, together with the single-differential dependence on Q2 (squared four-momentum transfer) and energy, in the range 1 GeV≤EνGENIE, GiBUU, NEUT, and NuWro neutrino event generators. The data do not strongly favor a model over the …

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research
We developed the Physics Inventory of Quantitative Literacy (PIQL) to assess students' quantitative reasoning in introductory physics contexts. The PIQL includes several "multiple-choice-multiple-response"(MCMR) items (i.e., multiple-choice questions for which more than one response may be selected) as well as traditional single-response multiple-choice items. In this paper, we discuss differences in performance on MCMR items that seems to result from differences in administration method (paper versus online). In particular, we find a tendency for "clickiness"in online administration: students choose more responses to MCMR items when taking the electronic version of the assessment. Student performance on single-response multiple-choice items was not affected …

The COSMOS field has been extensively observed by most major telescopes, including Chandra, HST, and Subaru. HST imaging boasts very high spatial resolution and is used extensively in morphological studies of distant galaxies. Subaru provides lower spatial resolution imaging than HST but a substantially wider field of view with greater sensitivity. Both telescopes provide near-infrared imaging of COSMOS. Successful morphological fitting of Subaru data would allow us to measure morphologies of over 104 known active galactic nucleus (AGN) hosts, accessible through Subaru wide-field surveys, currently not covered by HST. The morphological parameters indicate the types of galaxies that host AGNs. …

We Address The Existence And Dynamics Of One-Dimensional Harmonically Confined Quantum Droplets Appearing In Two-Component Mixtures By Deploying A Nonperturbative Approach. We Find That, In Symmetric Homonuclear Settings, Beyond-Lee-Huang-Yang Correlations Result In Flat-Top Droplet Configurations For Either Decreasing Intercomponent Attraction Or Larger Atom Number. Asymmetric Mixtures Feature Spatial Mixing Among The Involved Components With The More Strongly Interacting Or Heavier One Exhibiting Flat-Top Structures. Applying Quenches On The Harmonic Trap We Trigger The Lowest-Lying Collective Droplet Excitations. The Interaction-Dependent Breathing Frequency, Being Slightly Reduced In The Presence Of Correlations, Shows A Decreasing Trend For Stronger Attractions. Semianalytical Predictions Are Also …

Phonon densities of states (DOSs) of body-centered cubic chromium were measured by time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering at temperatures up to 1493 K. Density functional theory calculations with both quasiharmonic (QH) and anharmonic (AH) methods were performed at temperatures above the Néel temperature. Features in the phonon DOSs decrease in energy (soften) substantially with temperature. A Born–von Kármán analysis using fits to the experimental DOSs reveals a softening of almost 17% of the high-transverse phonon branch between 330 and 1493 K. The low-transverse branch changes by approximately half this amount. The AH calculations capture the observed behavior of the two transverse …

First-Principles Calculations On The Electronic Structure, Mechanical, Vibrational, And Thermal Properties Of The Ca₃Bin Antiperovskite Alloy, Reem Maher Mohamad
Theses
Antiperovskites are the counterparts of perovskites. They have diverse properties that make them physically rich and technologically relevant. In the recent years, the alkaline earth based antiperovskites, especially the ones with small semiconductor bandgap, have captured tremendous attention due to their properties which make them efficient to be used in optoelectronic and thermoelectric applications. In this thesis, we are shading light on the alkaline antiperovskite 𝐶𝑎3𝐵𝑖𝑁 due to its narrow bandgap. Thus, it can be considered as a promising candidate for thermoelectric and optoelectronic applications. Specifically, it is used to harvest waste thermal energy into electricity at low …

The presence of in-plane chiral effects, hence spin–orbit coupling, is evident in the changes in the photocurrent produced in a TiS3(001) field-effect phototransistor with left versus right circularly polarized light. The direction of the photocurrent is protected by the presence of strong spin–orbit coupling and the anisotropy of the band structure as indicated in NanoARPES measurements. Dark electronic transport measurements indicate that TiS3 is n-type and has an electron mobility in the range of 1–6 cm2V−1s−1. I–V measurements under laser illumination indicate the photocurrent exhibits a bias directionality dependence, reminiscent of …
One-Loop Corrections To Dihadron Production In Dis At Small X, Filip Bergabo
One-Loop Corrections To Dihadron Production In Dis At Small X, Filip Bergabo
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
We calculate the one-loop corrections to dihadron production in Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) at small x using the Color Glass Condensate formalism. We show that all UV and soft singularities cancel while the collinear divergences are absorbed into quark and anti quark-hadron fragmentation functions. Rapidity divergences lead to JIMWLK evolution of dipoles and quadrupoles describing multiple-scatterings of the quark anti-quark dipole on the target proton/nucleus. The resulting cross section is finite and can be used for phenomenological studies of dihadron angular correlations at small x in a future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC).
Revealing The Three-Dimensional Magnetic Texture With Machine Learning Models, Shihua Zhao
Revealing The Three-Dimensional Magnetic Texture With Machine Learning Models, Shihua Zhao
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Revealing three-dimensional (3D) magnetic textures with vector field electron tomography (VFET) is essential in studying novel magnetic materials with topologically protected spin textures potentially being used in the next-generation semiconductor industry. In this dissertation, we use machine learning (ML) models to reconstruct 3D magnetic textures from electron holography (EH) data.
We can feed the EH data, a series of two-dimensional (2D) phasemaps, into a neural network (NN) architecture directly or feed the EH data into a conventional VFET and then feed the reconstructed results into a NN. Thus, perceptive NN, either a simple convolutional neural network (CNN) or Unet architecture, …

Dynamics In Designed Elastins And Enzymes, Jonathan M. Preston
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In this dissertation I present experimental results on the structure and dynamics of elastin, an elastomeric extracellular component in vertebrates that, in mammals, provides structure and elasticity to the circulatory system, lungs, skin and joints. These experiments, using a set of designed elastin like proteins with properties analogous to the natural protein, show that elastin is highly disordered and connect this disorder to its mechanism of assembly and elasticity. In addition, I also present preliminary work on imparting flexibility into a set of computationally designed metalloenzymes to broaden the range of catalytic activities they perform.
Beam-Based Target Alignment For Mu2e, Helenka Casler
Beam-Based Target Alignment For Mu2e, Helenka Casler
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The Mu2e Experiment is a precision experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, searching for charged lepton flavor violation (CLFV) in the conversion of a muon to an electron in the presence of an atomic nucleus. In order to achieve the expected single-event sensitivity of 3 × 10-17 , Mu2e will require an intense muon beam, generated via pion decay. These pions are the product of a proton beam striking a radiatively-cooled tungsten target. In order to maximize pion production and prevent target failure, the beam will have to be aligned with the target center to within 0.5 mm. The …

We perform H I profile decomposition of the sample galaxies using a tool, BAYGAUD, which allows us to deblend a line-of-sight velocity profile with an optimal number of Gaussian components. We construct H I superprofiles of the sample galaxies via …
Azimuthal Anisotropy Of Different Quark-Flavored Particles In High Energy "Simulated" Proton-Proton Collisions, Mahmoud Rateb
Azimuthal Anisotropy Of Different Quark-Flavored Particles In High Energy "Simulated" Proton-Proton Collisions, Mahmoud Rateb
Theses and Dissertations
Anisotropic flow in high energy heavy-ion collisions is taken as a key evidence for the formation of QGP for brief seconds right after the collisions. Hydrodynamic models including QGP formation are accurate at predicting the azimuthal anisotropy of the produced particles at low transverse momenta. At high momenta however, hydrodynamic models predict no azimuthal anisotropy for particles of different masses and quark-flavors; the logic being that because of their high momenta, the particles pass through the media without having any time to have any reactivity. This is contrary to results from experiments where measurements of particles of different quark flavors …

Electrical modulation of magnetic states in single-phase multiferroic materials, using domain-wall magnetoelectric (ME) coupling, can be enhanced substantially by controlling the population density of the ferroelectric (FE) domain walls during polarization switching. In this work, we investigate the domain-wall ME coupling in multiferroic h-YbFeO3 thin films, in which the FE domain walls induce clamped antiferromagnetic (AFM) domain walls with reduced magnetization magnitude. Simulation according to the phenomenological theory indicates that the domain-wall ME effect is dramatically enhanced when the separation between the FE domain walls shrinks below the characteristic width of the clamped AFM domain walls during the ferroelectric …

Electromagnetic Theory And Applications, Nicholas Madamopoulos, George Kliros
Open Educational Resources
This book intends to provide both the fundamentals of Electromagnetics but also some practical applications of the concepts covered. Having taught electromagnetics for several years, the authors feel that many times the field of electromagnetics comes as “old” and often times students do not appreciate the concepts and their importance in everyday applications. The authors intend to accompany the EM concepts with life applications. Hence, students may see the direct impact of the knowledge they acquire through the study of the field of electromagnetics and better appreciate the field.

Grinding Cocoa Changes Chocolate Properties, Joseph Cooney
Grinding Cocoa Changes Chocolate Properties, Joseph Cooney
Research on Capitol Hill
This research studies how the viscoelastic properties of chocolate change through the 72-hour grinding process of chocolate manufacturing. Utah State University's Aggie Chocolate Factory produces chocolate from single-origin sources, each of which has a unique flavor, and thus a unique chemistry. This research explores the effects of grinding time on the viscoelasticity of each of these origins' chocolate types, including dark, sweet dark chocolate, and milk chocolate. Chocolate is a non-Newtonian fluid and therefore the Casson model (eq. 1) was used to obtain values for viscosity and yield stress, τ^(1/2)=τ_0^(1/2)+(η_PL y' )^(1/2) (1) Where τ is the shear stress measured …

Reliable electron yield (EY) measurements of highly insulating granular particles have long been considered too difficult to collect due the many experimental complexities that arise from the nature of the granular materials. This has led to a critical knowledge gap for both engineering strategies and basic science issues essential for myriad important space applications. This talk will emphasize the preliminary EY measurements of highly insulating granular samples we have collected, including a range of sasmples with typical particle size ranging from ~1 μm to ~100 μm, samples with cubical, spherical and highly angular particle shapes, studies of highly angular Al2O3 …
