The two-dimensional patterns in our small angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments from rapidly moving aerosols are anisotropic. To test the kinematic theory of two-body scattering that describes the anisotropy, we conducted SANS experiments using a constant source of D2O aerosol with droplets moving at ~440 m/s, and varied the neutron velocity from 267 to 800 m/s. The theoretically predicted anisotropy of the laboratory scattering intensities agrees well with the experimental results. Based on an analysis of the scattering intensity in the Guinier region, we also determined the particle velocity. The results are in very good agreement with independent …

We report operational and construction details of a simplified GaAs polarized electron source. It is contained in a modified 4.63 in. Conflat four-way cross, and uses a single 56 ℓ /s turbomolecular pump. The design incorporates multiple cesiators to extend source lifetime, a new spring-clamp GaAs crystal mounting design to provide uniform crystal heating, and a very simple tubular 90° electrostatic deflector. We also discuss matters related to preparing, heat cleaning, and activating the GaAs crystal.

The two-photon ionization of the metal atoms V, Cr, Y, La, and Ir sputtered by an Ar-ion gun from solid targets has been investigated using linearly polarized laser pulses of 500- fs duration and 248.6-nm (KrF) wavelength in combination with mass spectroscopy that is free of volume effects. A near-resonant ionization process has to be attributed to all five atoms. By fitting analytical solutions of a rate equation model describing the temporal evolution of the ionization process, we can determine absolute values of the one-photon cross sections and saturation intensities.

Micro-channel flows have been computed to investigate the influence of Navier-Stokes formulation for the slip-flow boundary condition, and a micro-polar fluid model, respectively.

The results of the slip boundary condition show that the current methodology is valid for slip-flow regime (i.e., for values of Knudsen number less than approximately 0.1). Drag reduction phenomena apparent in some micro-channels can be explained by slip-flow theory. These results are in agreement with some computations and experiments.

An ad hoc micro-polar fluid model is developed to investigate the influence of micro effects, such as micro-gyration, in micro-scale flows. The foundation of the ad hoc …

We present a measurement of the mass difference Δmd for the B0 meson and the statistical power of the b flavor tagging methods used. The measurement uses 90 pb-1 of data from pp̅ collisions at √s =1.8 TeV collected with the CDF detector. An inclusive lepton trigger is used to collect a large sample of B hadron semileptonic decays. The mass difference Δmd is determined from the proper time dependence of the fraction of B hadrons that undergo flavor oscillations. Magnetotactic bacteria orient and migrate along geomagnetic field lines. This ability is based on intracellular magnetic structures, the magnetosomes, which comprise nanometer-sized, membrane-bound crystals of the magnetic iron minerals magnetite (Fe3O4) or greigite (Fe3O4). Magnetosome formation is achieved by a mineralization process with biological control over the accumulation of iron and the deposition of the mineral particle with specific size and orientation within a membrane vesicle at specific locations in the cell. A combined experimental and theoretical study of argon valence photoionization illustrates the discovery of the broad lack of validity of the independent-particle approximation (IPA) for x-ray photoemission. In addition to previously known breakdowns of the IPA, which are limited to high photon energies and regions very near threshold, the observed breakdown in photoionization at intermediate energies demonstrates generally that the IPA is valid only in very restricted domains. These restrictions are expected to be relevant throughout the periodic table, with consequences for a wide variety of applications.

Parity nonconservation (PNC) has been studied in the neutron p-wave resonances of 106Pd and 108Pd in the energy range of 20 to 2000 eV. Longitudinal asymmetries in p-wave capture cross sections are measured using longitudinally polarized neutrons incident on ∼20-g metal-powder targets at LANSCE. A CsI γ-ray detector array measures capture cross section asymmetries as a function of neutron energy which is determined by the neutron time-of-flight method. A total of 21 p-wave resonances in 106Pd and 21 p-wave resonances in 108Pd were studied. One statistically significant PNC effect was observed in106Pd, and no …

We demonstrate control of high-harmonic generation (HHG) by a linearly polarized laser field using uniform static magnetic and electric fields parallel to the laser polarization. We show that the harmonic intensity can be considerably increased for particular values of the magnetic field. The maximum values of the harmonic intensity correspond to such values of magnetic induction for which an integer multiple of the classical cyclotron period of the electron’s motion perpendicular to the magnetic field is equal to the return time of the ionized electron wave packet to the nucleus under the influence of the laser field (and static electric …

Collisional Dynamics Of Bi2 A(0U+). I. Quantum-Resolved Vibrational Energy Transfer For V′=0–4, Robert E. Franklin, Glen P. Perram

Vibrational-to-translational energy transfer between the lowest vibrational levels (v′=0–4) of the A(0+u) state of Bi2 has been investigated using spectrally resolved, laser-induced fluorescence techniques. The small vibrational spacing (ω′e≃132 cm−1) leads to highly nonadiabatic conditions, particularly for the Bi2(A)–He collision pair. However, the Δv=−1 transition probabilities for collisions with the rare gases range from 0.75% to 1.75% per collision, considerably lower than would be anticipated from standard vibrational energy transfer theory. Multiquantum (Δv′=±2) transfer rates are low, consistent with the low anharmonicity of the A(0+u) state. The rates for …

We present the results of UV and optical Hubble Space Telescope/Faint Object Spectrograph spectroscopy of bright, extranuclear regions of line emission in the Seyfert galaxies NGC 2110 and NGC 5929. We have obtained spectra of the brightest region of the ``nuclear jet'' of NGC 2110 (75 pc from the nucleus) and of the southwest emission-line cloud of NGC 5929 (90 pc from the nucleus), in the G130H (1090-1605 Å), G190H (1570-2310 Å), G400H (3235-4780 Å), and G570H (4570-6820 Å) configurations. Biconformal gauging of the conformal group gives a scale-invariant volume form, permitting a single form of the action to be invariant in any dimension. We display several 2n-dimensional scale-invariant polynomial actions and a dual action. We solve the field equations for the most general action linear in the curvatures for a minimal torsion geometry. In any dimension n > 2, the solution is foliated by equivalent n-dimensional Ricci-flat Riemannian space-times, and the full 2n-dimensional space is symplectic. A micromagnetics simulation has been conducted on nanostructured magnetic elements of iron in order to investigate the effect of the shape of the element on magnetic properties, such as domain formation and hysteresis loops. These results are compared with recent experimental studies. The results display an impressive agreement with both the experimentally observed magnetic domains in individual particles as well as the shape of the hysteresis loops. The simulation results then explain features in the hysteresis loops in terms of vortice formation and motion.

We present a search for like-sign dielectron plus multijet events using 107 pb-1 of data in pp̅ collisions at √s =1.8 TeV collected in 1992–1995 by the CDF experiment. Finding no events that pass our selection, we set σ X BR limits on two supersymmetric processes that can produce this experimental signature: gluino-gluino or squark-antisquark production with R-parity violating decays of the charm squark or lightest neutralino via a nonzero λ′121 coupling. We compare our results to the next-to-leading order calculations for gluino and squark production cross sections and set lower limits on M (g̃), M (t̃ …

We verify that summing 2D DT geometries correctly reproduces the Polyakov action for the conformal mode, including all ghost contributions, at large volumes. The Gaussian action is reproduced even for central charges greater than one lending strong support to the hypothesis that the space of all possible dyamical triangulations approximates well the space of physically distinct metrics independent of the precise nature of the matter coupling.

Scanning force microscopy (SFM) has been used to study nanoscale variations in switching parameters in layered perovskite films of SrBi2Ta2O9 and to investigate the effect of capacitor scaling on the standard deviation of the capacitors’ integral polarization signal. Ferroelectric poling and SFM piezoresponse imaging were performed in a number of regions on the film surface sized 2x2, 1x1, 0.5x0.5, and 0.3x0.3 μm2 with subsequent statistical analysis of the obtained data. Neutron resonances in 103Rh have been measured for neutron energies from 30 to 2000 eV using the time-of-flight method and the (n,γ) reaction. The rhodium resonance spectroscopy is essential for the analysis of parity violation measurements recently performed on neutron resonances in 103Rh. Neutron scattering and radiative widths were determined, and orbital angular momentum assignments made with a Bayesian analysis. The s-wave and p-wave strength functions and average level spacings were determined.

Studies of the effects of substrate temperature T, on the evolution of CO( 1 10)/Cr(002) texture, magnetic and physical grain size, intergrain-interaction, anisotropy, orientation ratio of remanence and coercivity were investigated experimentally. It is found that the hcp- Co(l10)hcc-Cr(002) texture is improved with increasing T, from 27OC to 265°C. The intergrain-interaction, magnetic and physical grain size decrease with increasing Ts and reach their minima at T,- 265°C where the magnetic grain size is close to the physical grain size. The correlation between the film microstructure and magnetic properties is studied systematically.

Several systems of nanocomposite thin films have been prepared by plasma sputtering and heat treatment. By choosing suitable multilayer structures of the as-deposited films and subsequent heat-treatment processes, the nanostrnctures of the films have been tailored. The thermal processing is the key to control the morphology. Appropriate heat-treatment processes have been found for the systems studied, which result in the desired nanostructures. For the first time a nearly ideal nanostructure with the soft-phase grains embedded homogeneously in the hard phase gralns has been obtained for the FePt-Fei.,Pt,(x-0.3) system. Magnetization processes in advanced magnetic nanostructures are investigated. For the case of spherical soft or semihard grains surrounded by a very hard matrix a bulging nucleation mode is discovered. The bulging mode exhibits the radial angular symmetry of the coherent mode, but it is incoherent due to its radial variation. The radial dependence of the bulging mode is obtained by solving a spherical Bessel equation which is subject to appropriate boundary conditions. In contrast to the coherent mode, the bulging mode yields a nucleationfield coercivity which depends on the exchange stiffness and on the size of the grain. There is …

Recent studies of pinch-off of filaments and rupture in thin films have found infinite sets of first-type similarity solutions. Of these, the dynamically stable similarity solutions produce observable rupture behavior as localized, finite-time singularities in the models of the flow. In this letter we describe a systematic technique for calculating such solutions and determining their linear stability. For the problem of axisymmetric van der Waals driven rupture (recently studied by Zhang and Lister), we identify the unique stable similarity solution for point rupture of a thin film and an alternative mode of singularity formation corresponding to annular “ring rupture.”

The magnetic images of a magnetic reference sample were compared using point and thin-film magnetic force microscopy (MFM) tips. The thin film MFM tip was made by magnetron sputtering of an amorphous metal. The point MFM tip was made by an ion milling process that produces a small magnetic particle on the cantilever. Our results clearly demonstrated that the volume of magnetic material involved in the tip-sample interaction is much reduced in the case of the point tip compared to that of the thin film tips. Parity nonconservation (PNC) was studied in p-wave neutron resonances of 103Rh in the neutron energy range 30 to 490 eV. The helicity dependence of the neutron total cross section of rhodium was determined by capture measurements with the time-of-flight method at the Manuel Lujan Neutron Scattering Center at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. A total of 32 p-wave resonances were studied and statistically significant longitudinal asymmetries were observed for resonances at En=44.5, 110.8, 321.6, and 432.9 eV. Our previous result on the correction of the Bethe stopping power theory for heavy target elements is amended, with the application of a more consistent version of the semirelativistic Bethe sum rule worked out recently [Phys. Rev. A 57, 4994 (1998)]. This correction is found to be significant for high-Z target atoms and relatively high-energy incident particles.

We present a measurement of the mass difference Δmd of the two Bd0 mass eigenstates. We use a flavor tagging method based on the lepton charge, in a sample of events with two muons at low transverse momentum. The sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 90 pb-1 collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The result obtained is Dmd=0.503±0.064(stat) ±0.071(syst) ps-1.

An optoelectronic switching network with 2-D optical fiber bundle arrays I/O access device is presented in this paper. An optoelectronic recirculating Banyan network based on CMOS/SEED smart pixel device is used in this configuration. We use radar observations from the Jicamarca Observatory from 1968 to 1992 to study the effects of the F region vertical plasma drift velocity on the generation and evolution of equatorial spread F. The dependence of these irregularities on season, solar cycle, and magnetic activity can be explained as resulting from the corresponding effects on the evening and nighttime vertical drifts. In the early night sector, the bottomside of the F layer is almost always unstable. The evolution of the unstable layer is controlled by the history of the vertical drift velocity. Experimental results from the Interface Configuration Experiment (ICE) performed aboard the Space Shuttle and the Mir Space Station are reported. The experiment concerns fluid interfaces in certain ‘exotic’ containers in a low-gravity environment. These containers are rotationally symmetric and have the property that for given contact angle and liquid volume, a continuum of distinct rotationally symmetric equilibrium configurations can appear, all of which have the same mechanical energy. These symmetric equilibrium configurations are unstable, in that deformations that are not rotationally symmetric can be shown mathematically to yield configurations with lower energy. We report direct observations of anomalous magnetic-field and temperature dependences of the Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations in the organic superconductor β″-(BEDT-TTF)₂SF₅CH₂CF₂SO₃. Unlike other BEDT-TTF based organic superconductors, a nonmetallic temperature dependence of the background magnetoresistance is clearly observed. It is speculated that the nonmetallic behavior may arise from a partial nesting of the open orbits, similar to the field-induced density wave in the quasi-one-dimensional systems or a charge localization. The analysis of the magnetoresistance oscillations are found to deviate from the conventional Lifshitz-Kosevich description at high field and low temperatures. [S0163-1829(99)05433-8]
