Beamline 9.3.1 at the Advanced Light Source (ALS) is a windowless beamline, covering the 1–6 keV photon energy range. This beamline is designed to achieve the goal of high brightness at the sample for use in the x‐ray atomic and molecular spectroscopy (XAMS) science, surface and interface science, biology and x‐ray optical development programs at ALS. X‐ray absorption and time‐of‐flight photoemission measurements in 2–5 keV photon energy range along with the flux, resolution, spot size and stability of the beamline will be discussed. Prospects for future XAMS measurements will also be presented.

Angular distributions of C++O+ from CO were measured, following vibrationally resolved C 1s excitations into the 2pπ, 3sσ, and 3pπ orbitals as well as into higher unresolved orbitals. A time-of-flight mass spectrometer, with a multihit-type position-sensitive anode, was used for the measurements. The anisotropy parameters (β) of C++O+ approach their theoretically expected values as the released kinetic energy in the fragmentation increases. The value of the β parameters remains constant for all vibrational states within each orbital.

Linear analysis and nonlinear numerical simulations of autocatalytic reaction fronts ascending in narrow vertically unbounded slabs describe the growth, development, and annihilation of fingers in the front, the dynamics of edge suppression, and a secondary transition to a two-roll state above the onset of convection. The pattern formation and evolution of the reaction fronts are determined by the horizontal aspect ratio Γ=b/a and the dimensionless driving parameter S=δga3/νDC, which involve the gap thickness a, the slab width b, the fractional density difference δ between the unreacted and reacted solutions, the gravitational acceleration g, the kinematic viscosity …

A radio-interferometer array illuminated by 136-MHz beacons of several geosynchronous satellites has been used to study small (≥ 1013 m−2) transient disturbances in the total electron content along the lines of sight to the satellites. High-frequency (ƒ> 3 mHz) electron content oscillations are persistently observed, particularly during night and particularly during geomagnetically disturbed periods. The oscillations move across the array plane at speeds in the range 200–2000 m/s, with propagation azimuths that are strongly peaked in lobes toward the western half-plane. Detailed analysis of this azimuth behavior, involving comparison between observations on various satellite positions, indicates compellingly that the phase …

We present an improved calculation of higher-order corrections to the one-loop self-energy of 2P states in hydrogenlike systems with small nuclear charge Z. The method is based on a division of the integration with respect to the photon energy into a high- and a low-energy part. The high-energy part is calculated by an expansion of the electron propagator in powers of the Coulomb field. The low-energy part is simplified by the application of a Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation. This transformation leads to a clear separation of the leading contribution from the relativistic corrections and removes higher-order terms. The method is applied to …

The photoionization cross sections for Ar+ through Ar4+, produced by the Auger decay of a 2p hole in argon, have been measured between 242 eV and 253 eV by the use of synchrotron radiation. The high resolution of the monochromator has allowed a detailed study of the postcollision interactions that occur in this spectral region. The concept of photoelectron recapture by Ar2+ to produce the Ar+ continuum is studied. The relative values of the quantum-mechanical calculations of the photoelectron recapture probability are shown to be in excellent agreement with the present data. The magnitude …

Cross sections have been measured for the production of He+ (np) 2Po states, n=2,3,4, by proton impact on helium over a projectile velocity range of 1.42–2.45 a.u. (50 ≤E≤150 keV). Cross sections were determined by measuring the extreme ultraviolet photons emitted from excited He1 ions. The data indicate a lower energy than expected for the maximum cross section. A comparison of the present results in terms of projectile energy dependance with the cross sections for excitation to He (1snp) 1Po, ionization, and total electron capture suggests the primary mechanism …

The cross sections for the deep inelastic charged-current interactions e+p → ν̄X and e-p → νX have been measured in the kinematic region x > 0.006 and Q2 > 200GeV2, using the e+p and e-p data collected with the ZEUS detector during 1993 and 1994. For the integrated cross sections, σe+→ν̄X(Q2>200 GeV2) = 30.3- 4.2+ 5.5 [stat] -2.6+1.6 [syst] pb σe-p→νX(Q2>200 GeV2) = 54.7-9.8+15.9 [stat] -3.4+2.8 [syst] pb are obtained, in good agreement with the Standard Model expectations of 32.3pb and 65.8pb. Charge-Coupled-Device (CCD) cameras have opened a new world in astronomy and other related sciences with their high quantum efficiency, stability, linearity, and easy handling. Nevertheless, there is still noise in raw CCD images and even more noise is added through the image calibration process. This makes it essential to know exactly how the calibration process impacts the noise level in the image. The properties and characteristics of the calibration frames were explored. This was done for bias frames, dark frames and flat-field frames at different temperatures and for different exposure times.

The magnetic properties of intact blood cells of the tunicate Ascidia ceratodes have been measured up to 50 kOe with a SQUID susceptometer. Analysis of total metal contents by plasma emission spectroscopy and V(IV) content by epr indicates that approximately 5% of the accumulated vanadium is +4 vanadyl ion. Measured values of the magnetic moment MP at different values of the applied magnetic field H over the temperature range T = 2–100 K depend on the magnitude of the field indicating magnetic anisotropy of the ground state. We study numerically the dynamical triangulation formulation of two-dimensional quantum gravity using a restricted class of triangulation, so-called minimal triangulations, in which only vertices of coordination number 5, 6, and 7 are allowed. A real-space RG analysis shows that for pure gravity (central charge c = 0) this restriction does not affect the critical behavior of the model. Furthermore, we show that the critical behavior of an Ising model coupled to minimal dynamical triangulations (c = 1/2) is still governed by the KPZ-exponents.

We use the recently proposed node decimation algorithm for blocking dynamical geometries to investigate a class of models, with central charge greater than unity, coupled to 2D gravity. We demonstrate that the blocking preserves the fractal structure of the surfaces.

The statistical mechanics of flexible two-dimensional surfaces (membranes) appears in a wide variety of physical settings. In this talk we discuss the simplest case of fixed-connectivity surfaces. We first review the current theoretical understanding of the remarkable flat phase of such membranes. We then summarize the results of a recent large scale Monte Carlo simulation of the simplest conceivable discrete realization of this system \cite{BCFTA}. We verify the existence of long-range order, determine the associated critical exponents of the flat phase and compare the results to the predictions of various theoretical models.

We consider two issues in the DT model of quantum gravity. First, it is shown that the triangulation space for D>3 is dominated by triangulations containing a single singular (D-3)-simplex composed of vertices with divergent dual volumes. Second we study the ergodicity of current simulation algorithms. Results from runs conducted close to the phase transition of the four-dimensional theory are shown. We see no strong indications of ergodicity br eaking in the simulation and our data support recent claims that the transition is most probably first order. We consider a periodic lattice rapidly driven through a quenched random potential as a model of a moving Abrikosov lattice. In addition to the transverse phonon displacements u_y, we consider the displacements u_x along the direction of motion, which were assumed to be small in earlier treatments. We show that these displacements are in fact divergent even on large length scales and therefore lead to a breakdown of the elastic model along the direction of motion. We propose that the resulting phase is a moving "smectic" with translational order that is quasi-long-range transverse and liquid-like parallel to the direction of …

Recently, it has been argued that a strong electron-phonon interaction arising from the Jahn-Teller splitting of the outer Mn d level plays a crucial role in understanding the nonmetal-to-metal transition observed in the La1-xAxMnO3 (A=Ca, Sr, Ba) system. We show, by neutron powder diffraction, that La0.65Ca0.35MnO3 exhibits an anomalous volume and oxygen/manganese displacement change around Tc, in qualitative agreement with the theoretical prediction.

Hall scattering factors for electrons and holes in molecular beam epitaxial GaAs layers have been determined by comparing carrier concentrations measured by the Hall effect with those measured by the electrochemical capacitance–voltage technique. The conclusion is that both the electron and hole scattering factors are near unity for n ranging from 2×1016 to 7×1017 cm−3, and p ranging from 5×1016 to 4×1019 cm−3. This conclusion is consistent with the present theory for electrons, but not with that for holes.

Time-of-flight measurements on a wide variety of molecularly-doped polymers reveal carrier mobilities that exhibit an exponential dependence on the square root of the applied electric field. Recent attempts to explain the observed field dependence have focused on the role played by spatial and energetic disorder. It as also been conjectured that the charge-dipole interactions often identified as the source of energetic disorder could be of sufficient range to lead to correlations in the energies of neighboring hopping sites. We develop an analytic technique to study the dynamics in the neighborhood of a periodic trajectory of a Hamiltonian system. The theory begins with Poincaré and Birkhoff; major modern contributions are due to Meyer, Arnol'd, and Deprit. The realization of the method relies on local Fourier-Taylor series expansions with numerically obtained coefficients. The procedure and machinery are presented in detail on the example of the ‘‘perpendicular’’ (z=0) periodic trajectory of the diamagnetic Kepler problem. The contribution of the {sup 18}F(p,{gamma}) reaction to the production of {sup 19}Ne, which is an important isotope in connection with the breakout from the hot CNO cycle, has been investigated in experiments with {sup 18}F beams. Measurements of the cross sections for the {sup 18}F(p,{alpha}){sup 15}O and {sup 18}F(p,{gamma}){sup 19 }Ne reactions indicate that the contribution of the {sup 18}F(p, {gamma}) route to the formation or {sup 19}Ne is small.

This review presents theoretical and experimental aspects of (e,2e) spectroscopy specific to the study of crystalline and amorphous solids. The cross section for (e,2e) scattering is proportional to the spectral momentum density of the ejected electron under certain approximations. The theoretical framework for interpreting (e,2e) measurements is summarized here and general properties of the spectral momentum density of solids are discussed. Different designs of the (e,2e) spectrometer are described and sample preparation techniques are briefly reviewed. Six samples of Ce2Fe17-xGax with nominal Ga content x equal to 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 1.0, 2.0 have been studied by powder neutron diffraction at room temperature. Both crystalline and magnetic refinements have been carried out. All six samples adopt the Th2Zn17-type rhombohedral structure. The only additional phase found is α-iron. Gallium atoms are found to have high affinity for the iron 18h site, and are absent from the 9d and 18f sites. The Ga substitution for Fe leads to an expansion of both the a and c axes. The Curie …

A formalism is developed for evaluating probabilities and cross sections for multiple-electron transitions in scattering of molecules and clusters by charged collision partners. First, the molecule is divided into subclusters each made up of identical centers (atoms). Within each subcluster coherent scattering from identical centers may lead to observable phase terms and a geometrical structure factor. We describe a deformation of the observable algebra of quantum gravity in which the loop algebra is extended to framed loops. This allows an alternative nonperturbative quantization which is suitable for describing a phase of quantum gravity characterized by states which are normalizable in the measure of Chern-Simons theory. The spinor identities are extended to a set of relations which are governed by the Kauffman bracket so that the spin network basis is deformed to a basis of SU(2)q spin networks. Using perturbed-angular-correlation (PAC) spectroscopy, via the Hf-->Ta probe, we have measured Mn-site electric-field gradients (EFG's) at Ta nuclei in ceramic samples of LaMnO3. Two crystallographic phases coexist over a temperature interval of ≈16 K near the orthorhombic-to-rhombohedral transition at ≈724 K, which shows a thermal hysteresis of ≈1.7±0.2 K. Concurrently, in the two phases, we determined the temperature dependence of the EFG parameters, Vzz, ƞ, and δ, and the ratio of the probe concentrations A1/A2. To explain the apparent coexistence of two phases in this weakly first-order transition, we present a model that assumes a spatial distribution of Tc …

A single pass cylindrical mirror analyzer for use in charged particle analysis has reduced size for mounting on a simple manipulator. The reduced size of the analyzer allows for placement of the analyzer on a linear motion feedtrough mounted on a conflat flange for insertion into and retraction from the analysis position. The reduced size of the cylindrical mirror analyzer in combination with good instrument resolution results in a versatile charged particle analyzer.

Hidden Structure In A Lagrangian For Hyperfine Splitting Of The Heavy Baryons, Joseph Schechter, Masayasu Harada, Asif Qamar, Francesco Sannino, Herbert Weigel

We investigate the hyperfine splitting of the heavy baryons in the bound-state approach. We start with an ordinary relativistic Lagrangian which has been extensively used to discuss finite mass corrections to the heavy limit predictions. It turns out that the dominant contribution arises from terms which do not manifestly break the heavy spin symmetry. The actual heavy spin violating terms are uncovered by carefully performing a 1/M expansion of this Lagrangian.

A production of low velocity and monoenergetic atomic beams would increase the resolution in spectroscopic studies and many other experiments in atomic physics. Laser Cooling uses the radiation pressure to decelerate and cool atoms. The effusing from a glow discharge metastable argon atomic beam is affected by a counterpropagating laser light tuned to the cycling transition in argon. The Zeeman shift caused by a spatially varying magnetic field compensates for the changing Doppler shift that takes the atoms out of resonance as they decelerated.
