Trends. Injustice Through Justice Within The Ins And The Fbi: Fertile Territory For Information, Ibpp Editor
International Bulletin of Political Psychology
The author discusses the quest for justice, in which policymakers, legislators, and those who seek to influence them sometimes seek to effect mandatory sequences of adjudicative procedure upon allegations of misbehavior.

The ZEBRA system, which is part of the VisualHarness platform for managing heterogeneous data, supports three types of access to distributed image repositories: keyword based, attribute based, and image content based. A user can assign different weights (relative importance) to each of the three types, and within the last type of access, to each of the image properties. The image based access component (IBAC) supports access based on computable image properties such as those based on spatial domain, frequency domain or statistical and structural analysis. However, it uses a novel black box approach of utilizing a Visual Information Retrieval (VIR) …

Urban Earthquake Hazards: The Impact Of Culture On Perceived Risk And Response In The Usa And Japan, Risa Palm
Geosciences Faculty Publications
This paper reports on a major survey of earthquake hazard response in neighbourhoods in Tokyo-Yokohama and Los Angeles, two metropolitan areas of highly industrialized nations which routinely exchange ideas in order to try to learn from the policies, practices and experiences of the other. Survey findings showed many similarities in hazard response and preferred public policy, but also important contrasts in behaviour, and significant differences in the factors associated with these behaviours. The findings suggest caution in bi-national policy-sharing unless such sharing is preceded by a careful study of local cultural contexts.

Multiparameter flow cytometry studies were performed on cells from the primary tumors of 94 patients with breast cancer. Correlated cellular measurements of cell DNA content, Her-2/neu, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), and p21ras levels were performed on each of 5,000 to 100,000 cells from each tumor. When criteria for positivity were matched with those in common use for immunohistochemical studies, 28 of 94 (30\%) breast cancers were classified as positive for Her-2/neu overexpression. When similar criteria were applied to the EGFR measurements, 23 of 94 (24\%) cases were classified as positive for EGFR overexpression. Similarly, 23 of 94 (24\%) cases …

Redevelopment Strategies For The Darst Street Site In Peoria, Illinois, Kirstin Toth, Donald T. Iannone
All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
In July, 1998, the Great Lakes Environmental Finance Center (GLEFC) conducted a consulting workshop in Peoria, Illinois. The purpose of the workshop was to assist the City of Peoria in its efforts to develop actions leading to the successful redevelopment of the Darst Street site. Particular emphasis was placed on strategies pertinent to properties with a history of environmental contamination, often characterized as brownfields. In the case of Darst Street, where the level of environmental concern was not fully known, remediation funding strategies were not addressed. Redevelopment of the site and the prospect for a variety of users was the …

Iowa's Changing Forest Resources, Steven E. Jungst, Donald R. Farrar, Michael Brandrup
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
After a period of decline in area extending from the 1850s to 1974, Iowa's forest area increased between 1974 and 1990. Although the area increase is encouraging, it may be fleeting. In addition, changes in forest stand structure and forest ownership patterns along with other pressures may make it difficult to maintain healthy forest ecosystems in the future. Notes from the original land survey in Iowa coupled with information from U.S. Forest Service forest inventories make it possible to look at changes in forest area and forest tree types. Unfortunately, similar long-term data do not exist to make possible a …

Strictly Level-Decreasing Logic Programs, Pascal Hitzler, Anthony K. Seda
Strictly Level-Decreasing Logic Programs, Pascal Hitzler, Anthony K. Seda
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
We study strictly level-decreasing logic programs (sld-programs) as defined earlier by the present authors. It will be seen that sld-programs, unlike most other classes of logic programs, have both a highly intuitive declarative semantics, given as a unique supported model, and are computationally adequate in the sense that every partial recursive function can be represented by some sld-program P. Allowing for a safe use of cuts, an interpreter based on SLDNF-resolution, as implemented for example in standard Prolog systems, is shown to be sound and complete with respect to this class of programs. Furthermore, we study connections between topological …

Research in Outdoor Education
The Coalition for Education in the Outdoors initiated a Research Task Force in 1990 with the purpose of supporting the conduct of research in the field and the dissemination of the results. The symposium at Bradford Woods and these proceedings offer evidence of the success of this task force. At the first symposium in 1992, there was general agreement that the symposium be a regular occurrence. The 1994, 1996 and 1998 Symposia and these Proceedings are indicators of the Coalition's continued support of research in outdoor education. Information on future events will be available through the Coalition office.

"A Sense Of Competence." Re-Conceptualizing Issues Of Competence For Women In Outdoor Education, T. A. Loeffler
Research in Outdoor Education
Competence development in outdoor education is a complex process that is shaped by gender-role socialization, learning environments, and by individual differences. Outdoor educators need to further their understanding of this process so they can fully empower themselves and their students. Outdoor programs need to be designed to support the development of both competence in outdoor skills and a sense of competence in these skills so program participants will be able to fully participate in outdoor activities. This abstract provides an introduction to the issue of competence development and further discussion of this topic is available in Loeffler (1997).
Self-Efficacy And Adventure Programs: Transferring Outcomes To Everyday Life, Todd Paxton, Leo H. Mcavoy
Self-Efficacy And Adventure Programs: Transferring Outcomes To Everyday Life, Todd Paxton, Leo H. Mcavoy
Research in Outdoor Education
In the field of outdoor education, the belief that outdoor adventure programs have the ability to increase the participants' self-efficacy has long been. used to defend program existence and to give more credibility to the discipline (Berman & Berman, 1994; Cockrell, 1991; Ewert, 1989; Miles & Priest, 1990). Although outdoor adventure programs are based on the assumption that a positive effect on individuals' self-efficacy will carry over into the participants' lives after the course, there is little empirical research on this topic. In Hattie, Marsh, Neill, & Richards' (1997) meta-analysis of research on adventure programs, they point out the need …
Factors Affecting The Personal And Social Outcomes Of Organized Camping, Marta K. Moorman
Factors Affecting The Personal And Social Outcomes Of Organized Camping, Marta K. Moorman
Research in Outdoor Education
Summer camp holds a special place in the minds of children. thoughts of camp bring images of swimming, hiking, laughing and making new friends. According to Dustiri (1989), the secret of organized camping is that camp is on a finite, human scale. Anyone can make a difference in their own comer of the world. Another important aspect of camp (Dustin, 1994) is creating a place for children to be children, not ''miniature adults" (p.28). Chenery (1984) sees the essential contribution of camp as. providing children with a space for spiritual development. Many factors could influence what sort of experiences campers …
