Outdoor Leader Self Awareness And Its Relationship To Co-Leaders' Perceptions Of Influence, Mark C. Wagstaff
Outdoor Leader Self Awareness And Its Relationship To Co-Leaders' Perceptions Of Influence, Mark C. Wagstaff
Research in Outdoor Education
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between outdoor leader self-awareness and co-leaders' perceptions of leader influence. Self-awareness was based on the concept of self-actualization (Maslow, 1968, 1970, 1971). The construct of influence was operationalized as power (French & Raven, 1959).

Validity And Reliability Of The Outdoor Education Practicum Questionnaire, Thomas J. Quinn
Research in Outdoor Education
The purpose of this study was to design a reliable and valid instrument to measure perceived levels of anxiety of students enrolled in a resident outdoor adventure education course, and to support a four factor model of perceived levels of anxiety of students in such programs. The four proposed factors or latent variables include: 1) Level of Control, 2) Program Inadequacies, 3) Personal Inadequacies, and 4) Level of Comfort.
Validating Predictors To Determine Optimal Adventure In Whitewater Kayaking, Chris D. Jones, Steven J. Hollenhurst
Validating Predictors To Determine Optimal Adventure In Whitewater Kayaking, Chris D. Jones, Steven J. Hollenhurst
Research in Outdoor Education
This study attempts to validate predictors of optimal adventure within an on-site whitewater kayaking setting using a modification of the Experience Sampling Method (ESM). Based on the flow theory and Martin and Priest's (1986) Adventure Experience Paradigm, it was expected that measures of challenge-skill and risk-competence would be correlated and predict indicators of an optimal or peak adventure experience. Additionally, it was expected that differences would be found in the levels of perceived challenge and risk according to the difficulty of river stages.
Pitfalls To Avoid In Adventure Education Outcome Research, Jim Sibthorp
Pitfalls To Avoid In Adventure Education Outcome Research, Jim Sibthorp
Research in Outdoor Education
There has been much consensus that adventure education needs more theory building and theory testing, yet the methodological problems associated with much of the empirical and quantitative research are making this a daunting task. Future . research endeavors should (a) make comparisons t}lat make sense, (b) use random assignment to experimental and control/comparison groups, (c) use and report appropriate statistical procedures, ( d) take care to assess validity of research instruments for populations under study, (e) be willing to openly discuss project biases and limitations.

Evaluating Short Term And Long Term Retention Of Experiences Associated With An Interpretive School Field Trip, Jim Sibthorp, Doug Knapp
Evaluating Short Term And Long Term Retention Of Experiences Associated With An Interpretive School Field Trip, Jim Sibthorp, Doug Knapp
Research in Outdoor Education
The strong evidence that an interpretive experience can promote initial knowledge retention sets up a more difficult question: how long do these students hold on to . this information? More precisely, what do the students remember one month or more after the initial treatment? Are these memories associated with interpreter-derived program objectives or tertiary variables such as social or environmental factors? Can the memories from this experience impact a student's attitude toward the resource site? These are questions that are looked at through this pilot study evaluating short term and long term retention of experiences associated with an interpretive school …

The Future Of Research In Outdoor Education, Simon Priest
Research in Outdoor Education
Editor's Note: The CEO research symposia have always included working sessions on topics and issues of concern to participants. At the fourth symposium, the topic was no less than "the future of research in our field." Masterfully facilitated by Simon Priest, symposium participants alternated between plenary sessions and smaller working groups and sought to develop agendas and strategies that might advance our field in important ways. Pleased with the results, everyone asked Simon to prepare a summary, which he promptly did and distributed by e-mail. For- the record, we conclude these proceedings by printing Simon Priest's outline-style summary of this …

Morphology And Process On The Lateritic Coastline Near Darwin, Northern Australia, R. W. Young, Edward A. Bryant
Morphology And Process On The Lateritic Coastline Near Darwin, Northern Australia, R. W. Young, Edward A. Bryant
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
Coastal morphology near Darwin is controlled mainly by the gentle warping of a lateritic profile. In synclines the lateritic cuirasse forms extensive shore platforms, but on the anticlines the pallid zone of the weathering profile is eroded by waves, causing the undercut cuirasse to collapse. The dominant modern process on the shore platforms is solutional attack on the laterite, resulting in large depressions. Many of the platforms are covered by relict layers of cemented laterite cobbles transported by waves of high energy. C14 ages on carbonate cement between the cobbles show that one sheet was deposited at about 3700 BP …

Leafy Spurge (Euphorbia Esula L.) Spread In Iowa, S. C. Huerd, S. E. Taylor
Leafy Spurge (Euphorbia Esula L.) Spread In Iowa, S. C. Huerd, S. E. Taylor
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L.), a noxious perennial weed spreading south from the northern Great Plains into Iowa, is considered a threat to Iowa's Prairie preserves because it is an aggressive non-native plant that dominates the landscape through rapid sexual and asexual reproduction. Methods to control leafy spurge include cultural and chemical controls, and biological controls are currently being developed. In 1992 and 1993 we surveyed the extent of leafy spurge spread in Iowa and found 26 of 99 Iowa counties with leafy spurge populations. Iowa's leafy spurge populations are rapidly expanding on untilled lands such as roadsides, especially in …
Book Review - Birds In Iowa, Peter Wickham
Book Review - Birds In Iowa, Peter Wickham
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Here is a book that those who are interested in birds and their distribution in Iowa will absolutely have to possess. This volume is the successor to the book Iowa Birds, which was written by the above authors together with three others and published in 1984. It brings our understanding to the number of species of birds and their relative abundance in Iowa up-to-date. Although only twelve years elapsed between the publication of the previous volume and this one, the activity of those interested in identifying birds increased enormously during those years. In addition, their ability to identify and find …
Status Of Aquatic Vascular Plants 1n Iowa's Natural Lakes, G. S. Phillips
Status Of Aquatic Vascular Plants 1n Iowa's Natural Lakes, G. S. Phillips
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Conversion of wetlands to agricultural land during the settlement of Iowa has resulted in a significant decline in the total area of lake habitat in the state. This reduction in area, combined with the degradation of remaining sites, resulted in dramatic reductions in aquatic vascular plant populations associated with Iowa's natural lakes. While declines in plant species inhabiting fen, bog, seepage, prairie pothole, and marsh type wetlands have been extensively documented, few quantitative data exist for lake type wetlands. During the summer of 1996, a total of 86 natural lakes in Iowa were surveyed for aquatic vascular plants. Many of …
Iowa's Odonata: Declining And/Or Changing?, Robert W. Cruden, O. J. Gode Jr.
Iowa's Odonata: Declining And/Or Changing?, Robert W. Cruden, O. J. Gode Jr.
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
We undertook a comprehensive survey of the Order Odonata in Iowa. Because the credibility of our conclusions derives from our collecting strategy and effort, we discuss our strategy in depth. We collected throughout the state (more than 500 sites in 94 counties), throughout the flight season (late May-early October), and tried to visit several habitats in each county. Our 7900+ observations made between 1993 and 1996 include approximately 2300 county records, 93 of the 110 species reported for the state, and eight species previously unknown from the state. At least 30 species are secure and occur across the state. Other …

Distribution And Ecology Of The Morels And False Morels Of Iowa, L. H. Tiffany, G. Knaphus, D. M. Huffman
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The distribution, time of fruiting and habitats of morels and false morels in Iowa were documented during a 10 year survey (1984-1993). Distribution maps for each species also include information from published reports and from herbarium records. The true morel genus, Morchella, is represented in Iowa by five species. Three of these species, M. deliciosa, M. esculenta and M. crassipes, are sometimes interpreted as segments of one large, extremely variable species. M. semilibera and M. angusticeps also occur. M. angusticeps, a black morel, has not been previously reported from Iowa. Four false morels, two species in each of two genera, …

A Literature Review And Survey Of The Status Of Iowa's Terrestrial Flora, Deborah Q. Lewis
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
A survey of Iowa's floristic literature and herbarium resources indicates that while there is not uniform coverage of plant groups and regions, a great deal is known about the Iowa flora. Taxonomic and floristic studies are ongoing, despite evidence of a decreased number of researchers with expertise and interest in Iowa's flora and changing emphases in academic research. Current knowledge is sufficient for the production of an Iowa Flora, and an Iowa Flora committee to initiate this project is proposed.

Iowa's Wetlands, Present And Future With A Focus On Prairie Potholes, R. A. Bishop, J. Joens, J. Zohrer
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The vast prairie marsh-pothole complex that historically covered approximately 7 .6 millions acres in Iowa was reduced to less than 30,000 acres by 1980 when it was estimated that only 5,000 acres of prairie marsh and pothole habitat remained in private ownership. A bleak outlook for the future of wetlands was presented by Bishop (1981)." This outlook changed with the development of the North American Waterfowl Management Plan and the passage of two important pieces of legislation: the North American Wetlands Conservation Act and the Food Security Act of 1985. Protection of existing wetlands was afforded through the Swampbuster provision …
