Lakeside Homes Around Tuttle Creek Reservoir: An Element In The Local Settlement Fabric, Gary Lee Henton
Lakeside Homes Around Tuttle Creek Reservoir: An Element In The Local Settlement Fabric, Gary Lee Henton
Student Work
'l'he construction of several large reservoirs in the Midwest has brought about the growth of innumerable ancillary developments. The increased number of new homes, located adjacent to the reservoirs represents a growing component of our settlement fabric. Geographers have done studies on recreational developments, (Wolfe, Roy L., "Summer Cottages in Ontario"1 Howes, Robert· M., "Recreational Opportunities Arising from Reservoir Construction,"2) but little published investigation has been done in the Kansas, or Nebraska area. How important are the lakeshore homes now, and what part will they play in future housing? Who are the people currently occupying these structures? Where do they …

B707: Analysis Of Waste Disposal Problems Related To Maine Poultry Processing Plants, F. Richard King, Forest M. French
Bulletins
This study analyzed waste disposal problems related to Maine poultry processing plants. The problems of the Maine plants are quite typical of those found in the industry outside Maine. Two exceptions to this generality are amount of water used and cost of replacement and operation of the treatment facility. Maine plants appear to use more water than plants located in competing areas but they are of larger average size and have access to municipal water supplies and therefore are not particularly disadvantaged.

Articles written by honors program students. They were originally research projects, class papers or essays written for academic credit, but in each case the student has done further work editing and improving his or her manuscript for this publication. The articles represent a broad range of interests and disciplines, and they indicate a healthy attempt on the part of at least some students to dig for deeper knowledge and understanding than is usually associated with undergraduate study.

Social Costs And Benefits Of Water Resources Construction, Rabel J. Burdge, K. Sue Johnson
KWRRI Research Reports
This report analyzes and describes the process of relocating individuals and families who must move due to reservoir construction in Kentucky utilizing data collected in previous research. These data come from four separate studies: a study of community attitudes toward reservoir construction (Johnson county where the Paintsville reservoir is to be constructed), interviews with people who are slated for relocation when the Taylorsville reservoir is constructed, and two sets of interviews with people who have already been relocated due to reservoir construction (Cave Run and Carr Fork).
Psychological, social, economic and material costs and benefits associated with forced relocation are …

KWRRI Research Reports
Samples of water, bottom fauna, and fishes were collected from 66 stations in the Salt River and one of its principal tributaries, the Beech Fork and its tributary, the Chaplin River, Kentucky. Precipitation ranged from 38.86 inches (1969) to 58.04 inches (1970), an increase of nearly 50 percent with marked fluctuations in discharge. Intensive comparisons of phosphates, sulfates, specific conductance, total alkalinity, total hardness, and turbidity showed the streams to be relatively clean and healthy. Nearly 300 different kinds of benthic organisms and other macroinvertebrates have been collected and identified from the basin. Detailed studies of caddisflies and stream drift …

Spatial Variations In The Intra-Urban Response To A Noise Source, Wilbur David Conder
Spatial Variations In The Intra-Urban Response To A Noise Source, Wilbur David Conder
Dissertations and Theses
Most research on the urban sonic environment has been recent. One finding has been that physical noise exposure indices calibrate poorly with human noise response. The vagaries of human response to noise have given impetus to research to isolate the factors that differentiate human response to noise. The present thesis continues this research.
The thesis specifies human noise response to occur on three levels: awareness, annoyance, and complaint. The factors that structure each level of noise response are identified in the published Iiterature.
Noise awareness is a function of noise exposure. Noise annoyance is a function of noise exposure to …

The Characteristics And Genesis Of Stone Stripes In North Central Oregon, John Baine Pyrch
The Characteristics And Genesis Of Stone Stripes In North Central Oregon, John Baine Pyrch
Dissertations and Theses
Stone stripes are linear accumulations of rock debris separated by finer material and oriented down the steepest available slope. In north central Oregon, the stone stripes are composed of basalt fragments and occur where the soil mantle averages less than 1 m in depth. They are best developed in areas of higher elevation, usually from about 900 to 1100 m, and are most prominent on convex to straight slopes of 15 to 30 degrees. The stripes vary from a few meters to over 150 in length, and their widths range from 0.3 to over 3 m. The depth of the …

A Study Of The Dickey-Lincoln Hydroelectric Project And Its Impact On The Resources Of The Upper Saint John River Valley, Rosemary M. Manning, Sierra Club, New England Chapter
Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project
This report was under-taken primarily to evaluate the impact that the construction of the Dickey-Lincoln project would have upon the resources of the Upper St. John River, and to examine the assertion that the Dickey-Lincoln project constitutes a wise use of the public's environmental and economic resources. Since the case that has been made for the construction of the Dickey-Lincoln project rest primarily on the justification of the project in economic terms, this aspect of the project proposal will be intensively explored.
Social And Cultural Impact Of A Proposed Reservoir On A Rural Kentucky School District, Charles R. Smith, Philip Drucker
Social And Cultural Impact Of A Proposed Reservoir On A Rural Kentucky School District, Charles R. Smith, Philip Drucker
KWRRI Research Reports
This study utilizes anthropological concepts and research methods to study the educational system of a Central Kentucky school district with the goal of predicting the impact on it of a proposed multi-purpose (flood control, recreation, etc.) reservoir, and proposing options for forestalling dysfunctional aspects of that impact. The impact will result from the fact that although the county is now rurally oriented, the proposed reservoir will attract (has already begun to attract) urbanite residents from nearby Louisville, Kentucky's largest urban center, who can be expected to bring urban values concerning education, as well as other areas. To assess probable directions …

Impact Of A Proposed Reservoir On Local Land Values, Philip Drucker, Charles R. Smith, Allen C. Turner
Impact Of A Proposed Reservoir On Local Land Values, Philip Drucker, Charles R. Smith, Allen C. Turner
KWRRI Research Reports
This project was designed to study the impact of private preconstruction land acquisition in a Central Kentucky area in which a flood-control dam and reservoir impoundment is planned. The research design was built around use of anthropological concepts and research techniques. By these means it was possible to analyze the perceived values of land to traditionalist residents, among which social and economic security concepts are paramount. Recent land purchases, locally believed to have been made chiefly by "outsiders," (urbanites from nearby Louisville), at prices out of line in terms of local agricultural worth, has been extremely unsettling contributing to the …

Micronesia: Post World War Ii Sequential Socio-Economic Development, Dale S. Brown Jr.
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
An examination of the socio-economic development of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (Micronesia). A section devoted to early development deals with the long history of foreign administrators who have controlled the islands. The paper deals with interaction between the Micronesians and their administrators and will focus upon relations with the current administrator, the United States, which operates in the islands under a mandate from the United Nations. At the time of the writing of this paper the Micronesians were holding a plebiscite to determine their future political direction. Consideration is given to economic trends within the islands, the …

Some Aspects Of Conditioning Behavior In Rainbow Trout, Salmo Gairdneri, Reed E. Harris
Some Aspects Of Conditioning Behavior In Rainbow Trout, Salmo Gairdneri, Reed E. Harris
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Effects of exercise, social facilitation, and delayed conditioning after vi exercise on the learning behavior of 5 to 6-inch rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri, was measured in a conditioned avoidance response apparatus. The conditioning schedule contained an intertrial interval between alternate presentations of conditioned (light) and unconditioned (shock) stimuli. This randomization eliminated learning losses found in a previous study. Mean percentage avoidance, the measurement of learning, did not decrease significantly during conditioning trials. Exercised fish learned avoidance better than did non-exercised fish. Mean percentage avoidance for fish exercised at 0.5 ft/sec was 66.3; at 1.0 ft/ sec, 1.5 ft/sec, and …
Two Emotional Factors And Weight Loss Among Females Attending A Weight Control Class, Karen Lynn Carrigg, Eileen Rae Wangerin
Two Emotional Factors And Weight Loss Among Females Attending A Weight Control Class, Karen Lynn Carrigg, Eileen Rae Wangerin
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
A descriptive study was conducted on twenty-four females attending a weight control class to discover the effect of weight loss upon levels of self-esteem and anxiety, as an understanding of the relation of these factors to reduction and control of weight would prove helpful to community health nurses in counseling with overweight and obese persons in the community.
The entire sample was tested for self-esteem (TSCS) and A-State and A-Trait anxiety levels at the initial class of the weight control program sponsored by the Health Education Department of Loma Linda University Medical Center, and again after seven weeks of class …
