This study concerns the use of weekly average air temperature for predicting weekly average soil temperature under different conditions of surface cover during different times of year. Probabilities of weekly average air temperature for Lincoln as well as other Nebraska locations are available. These probabilities and the soil temperature prediction equations may be used in determining expected soil temperatures.
Role Of Transition Metals In Nitrite Decomposition In Soil, J. S. Bajwa
Role Of Transition Metals In Nitrite Decomposition In Soil, J. S. Bajwa
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Iron and copper increased the decomposition of nitrite significantly during the first two hours of reaction when 150 parts per million (ppm) of nitrite and nitrogen was added to an acidic soil. Manganese was found to have a slight effect. There was no additional effect of the added metals after two hours reaction time.
The higher concentration of metals was not effective in catalyzing the decomposition of the added nitrite in nitrogen. All the added nitrite nitrogen was not recovered and the deficit could be due to the formation of nitrogen gas.
Calcium Carbonate Dissolution And Precipitation In Water: Factors Affecting The Carbonate Saturometer Method, Lyle M. Dabb
Calcium Carbonate Dissolution And Precipitation In Water: Factors Affecting The Carbonate Saturometer Method, Lyle M. Dabb
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The carbonate saturometer method developed by Weyl (1961) was studied in respect to the effect of several variables on the solubility of carbonates. The solubility of three solid carbonate materials was measured in four different salt solutions, at four ionic strengths, and at two different temperatures. The solids studied included: calcite, dolomite, and a calcareous soil.
It was found that the three solid carbonate materials varied in solubility from a low in the soil carbonates to a high in dolomite.
Increasing the ionic strength of the solution increased the solubility of most of the solid carbonate materials.
By decreasing the …
The Effect Of Early Spring Clipping And The Level Of Nitrogen Fertilizer On The Yield Of Improved Pastures, North Logan, Utah, Dechar Sumrit
The Effect Of Early Spring Clipping And The Level Of Nitrogen Fertilizer On The Yield Of Improved Pastures, North Logan, Utah, Dechar Sumrit
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The influence of agronomic practices on forage production and chemical composition of grass-legume pasture mixture was studied at the Utah State University Dairy Farm, North Logan, Utah, during spring and summer, 1970. The soil is a well-drained Millville silt loam that has about a 1 percent slope. It is high in potash, phosphorus, and lime, having a pH of 7.9.
Analysis of the clipping management showed that the early spring clipping decreased the yield of forage. The losses in total yield due to spring clipping were approximately four to five times the yields received in early spring clipping. The grasses …
Relationship Of The Soil Water Content And Microclimate To The Plant Growth Water Use Relationship Of Several Plants, Philip Dean Sandberg
Relationship Of The Soil Water Content And Microclimate To The Plant Growth Water Use Relationship Of Several Plants, Philip Dean Sandberg
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Studies involving field plots, lysimeters, and garbage can lysimeters showed that an intermediate soil water level produced the most growth for a given amount of water use by oats, corn, and barley. For crested wheatgrass the lowest water level produced the most growth per water used. Field plots which were covered with sheet metal between the rows produced more plant growth per water used than the uncovered plots for the crops used in this study. One year's data were obtained on the effect of positioning the garbage can lysimeters. One half of the cans were placed on the soil surface …
The Effect Of Alternate Wetting And Drying On The Ammonium And Nitrite Nitrogen Transformation In Soils, Virupax C. Baligar
The Effect Of Alternate Wetting And Drying On The Ammonium And Nitrite Nitrogen Transformation In Soils, Virupax C. Baligar
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Investigations were carried out to study the effect of alternate wetting and drying cycles on the mineralization, nitrification, and denitrification of soil nitrogen in two soils, in the presence or absence of added ammonium and nitrite. Soils were analyzed at the end of each drying cycle for total inorganic nitrogen, ammonium, and nitrite nitrogen. Gaseous products, i.e., ammonia, and the oxides of nitrogen (NO and NO2) were collected in the course of drying for determination.
The drying cycles accelerated the rate of nitrogen mineralization in both soils and further increased the oxidation of applied and available ammonium. The …
A Comparative Study Of Boron Adsorption By A Calcareous And An Acid Soil, Namik M. Ali Rashid
A Comparative Study Of Boron Adsorption By A Calcareous And An Acid Soil, Namik M. Ali Rashid
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The adsorption of boron by Aiken clay loam and Vernal sandy loam was studied in the boron equilibrium concentration range of 0 to 40 ppm. Adsorption data were obtained at 11, 20 and 30°C. The data were analyzed by the application of the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. It was concluded that, in both soils, the adsorption of boron occurred on three distinct sites or regions.
The acid ferrigenous Aiken soil had a higher adsorption capacity for boron than the calcareous Vernal soil when compared on a unit mass basis. On the unit area basis, however, the Vernal soil adsorbed more boron …

Effect Of Time And Rate Of Application Of Nitrogen On The Yield Of The Mexican Wheat Under The Semi-Arid Conditions Of Tunisia, Habib M. Halila
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The effect of the time and rate of application of nitrogen on the yield of high yielding varieties of wheat was studied under the semiarid conditions of Northern Tunisia.
Analysis of the experimental data showed that nitrogen increased the yield of wheat in most locations which were chosen for this experiment.
In high rainfall areas, late application of nitrogen (tillering, jointing stages) was more effective than early applications. The optimum yield was obtained by applying 90 kilograms of nitrogen per hectare.
In the medium to low rainfall area, early applications (seeding time) were more effective than the late ones. The …

Micronutrients And Biological Patterns In Lake Mead, Hasan K. Qashu, Lorne G. Everett, J. S. Carlson, Bureau Of Reclamation
Publications (WR)
Progressive increases in concentration of dissolved solids in the Colorado River water from Lake Powell to Imperial Dam seem to alter plankton dynamics and biological productivity of the river. Also, changes in biological productivity and micronutrients concentrations occur within the same reservoir. Development of a digital simulation model to predict micronutrients concentrations and biological productivity is necessary for diagnosing changes in plankton population and effluent-carrying capacity of the system.
The objectives of the study are: (1) to determine trace metal balance at different locations in Lake Mead, (2) to measure biological productivity and conduct plankton population counts at each sampling …

Some Ecological Effects Of The Oil Industry On Farmland In East Central Illinois, Dale E. Fruendt
Masters Theses
Between June, 1970 and July, 1971 a two square mile area in East Central Illinois served as a study area for the effects of the oil industry on farm land. Observations were made on several farms concerning the activity of oil companies and interviews with farmers were held. Two areas of farmland were given special attention. One was a clover field where salt water had flooded a portion of the field. The other area was a corn field where oil had flooded approximately eight acres of land. Random samples of invertebrates were taken in both of these areas as well …

A Kinetic Approach To The Inactivation Of Zinc By Various Soil Constituents, Shingara S. Sandhu
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The adsorption reaction of zinc onto prochlorite, pyroxene, and biotite minerals, from dilute solution (water) was studied under isothermal conditions by agitated nonflow experiment method. The equilibrium concentration of zinc in the solution was determined both by radioactive tracer technique and adsorption spectrophotometer methods. The data were collected at three temperatures.
The data were treated by the equation:
∂θ/∂t = k1(1-θ)C - k-1θ
where θ is the fraction of total surface coverage and C is the equilibrium concentration of zinc in solution, k1 and k-1 are the rate constants for the adsorption and reverse …
Magnesium Ion Inhibition Of Calcium Carbonate Precipitation And Its Relation To Water Quality, John J. Hassett
Magnesium Ion Inhibition Of Calcium Carbonate Precipitation And Its Relation To Water Quality, John J. Hassett
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The effect of Mg++ ion on the solubility of calcium carbonate was determined using P. K. Weyls "carbonate saturometer."
The amount of calcium carbonate precipitated or dissolved was measured for five series of waters when equilibrated with solid carbonate.
It was found that the effect of Mg++ ion on solubility depend upon the nature of the solid phase: surface area, coprecipitated Mg++, minerology, etc.
Pure low area calcite showed an increase in solubility which could be explained by ion-pair formation, while its other carbonates departed from this behavior.

Areal And Temporal Variations In Developmental Phases Of Syringa Vulgaris L. Throughout The Western United States, Joseph Michael Caprio
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This paper presents the results of the analysis of 10 years of information 1957-1966 on three phases-- begin, peak and end bloom-- of the purple common lilac (Syringa vulgaris L.) using data recorded at approximately 1,000 locations throughout the Western Region of the United States.
The pattern of geographical advance of the various bloom phases is determined by both a manual mapping procedure developed by the author and by standard statistical methods. Manually drawn isophanes for the various elevations for begin bloom phase are based entirely upon the first 5 years of record, 1957-1961. A Zones of Adjustment map to …
