Characterization Of Water Movement Into And Through Soils During And Immediately After Rainstorms, C. T. Haan
Characterization Of Water Movement Into And Through Soils During And Immediately After Rainstorms, C. T. Haan
KWRRI Research Reports
The movement of water into and through soils in the unsaturated state is basic to many water resources problems including rainfall-runoff models, ground water recharge, irrigation, drainage, evapotranspiration and the movement of pollutants in soils. This study was conducted in an effort to determine if the flow equation based on Darcy's Law and the continuity equation could be used to describe watershed infiltration and thus be incorporated into hydrologic models.
The results of the study indicate that even on apparently uniform soils there is a great deal of variability in soil water properties. Handling this variability plus the difficulty of …
The Relation Between Soil Characteristics, Water Movement And Nitrate Contamination Of Ground Water, Grant W. Thomas, Matthew Mcmahon
The Relation Between Soil Characteristics, Water Movement And Nitrate Contamination Of Ground Water, Grant W. Thomas, Matthew Mcmahon
KWRRI Research Reports
Soils from several areas in Kentucky were placed in columns and leached with Ca(NO3)2. Subsoils high in iron oxide were found to retard the leaching of nitrate very significantly. In other soils, the nitrate moved through as fast as or slightly faster than the water.
Field application of nitrogen to corn was most efficient when done in the spring or summer near the time that the corn takes it up. The one exception to this was a red soil, where fall application of nitrogen resulted in little loss due to the retarding effect mentioned in the …

Location Of Solution Channels And Sinkholes At Dam Sites And Backwater Areas By Seismic Methods: Part Ii, Vincent P. Drnevich, D. Raghu
KWRRI Research Reports
Four seismic field methods and a laboratory method are used to determine shear wave propagation velocities and shear moduli for two sites. The four seismic methods are: standard seismic refraction survey, down hole shooting refraction survey, transient Rayleigh wave survey, and crosshole shooting survey. A torsional resonant column apparatus was used for the laboratory tests. The cross hole shooting method gave the best results because direct measurements were made. Criteria for using this method are given. Methods which measure compression wave velocity give inconsistent results because the conversion to shear wave velocity is very sensitive to Poisson's ratio. Laboratory tests …

Location Of Solution Channels And Sinkholes At Dam Sites And Backwater Areas By Seismic Methods: Part I, Vincent P. Drnevich, S. R. Smith, E. P. Cleveland
KWRRI Research Reports
The basic concepts associated with the sledge hammer seismic refraction survey are reviewed and a modified version called down hole shooting is discussed. The latter method has distinct advantages for rock surface profiling. These include: calibration at the end points of the survey, measurement of vertical wave propagation velocities directly, and having a refracted wave ray path for almost the entire survey length.
The down hole shooting seismic refraction survey has been simulated with the digital computer. The method can handle any shaped rock surface profile and generates corresponding travel time curves for the forward and reverse profile surveys. This …
Effect Of Early Growth Cultivation On Beans And Sweet Corn, Raymond L. Cartee
Effect Of Early Growth Cultivation On Beans And Sweet Corn, Raymond L. Cartee
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Investigations involving four cultivation treatments were conducted at the Utah State University Greenville Experimental Farm to determine the effect of these treatments on yields of beans and sweet corn. The effects of the different treatments on soil water content, soil temperature, and weed control in beans and corn were investigated. The effect of cultivation on the degree of root rot infection and the effect of different planting dates were also investigated in the bean study.
The pre-emergence treatment (ridged just before the plants emerge) produced a 48 percent greater bean yield and a 40 percent greater corn yield than the …
Evaluation Of The Filter Paper Method For Estimating Soil Water Potential, Samir Al-Khafaf
Evaluation Of The Filter Paper Method For Estimating Soil Water Potential, Samir Al-Khafaf
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The filter paper method for measuring soil water potential was evaluated. The method was calibrated using salt solutions (-1.4 bars to -22.4 bars), sample chamber psychrometer (-1 to -50 bars), pressure plate (-0.1 to -15 bars) and soil column at equilibrium (0 to -0.2 bars). It was found that the absolute temperature had little effect on the predicted soil water potential, but a temperature variation had a large effect. It was found that the temperature fluctuation must be small. The predicted water potential was influenced by the type of contact of the soil with the filter paper. It is suggested …
Model For Estimating Soil Water Flow, Water Content, Evapotranspiration And Root Extraction, Musa N. Nimah
Model For Estimating Soil Water Flow, Water Content, Evapotranspiration And Root Extraction, Musa N. Nimah
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A mathematical model was developed to predict water content profiles, evapotranspiration, water flow from or to the water table, root extraction and root water potential at the surface as functions of time under unsteady state conditions.
The model was tested in the field at The Hullinger Farm near Vernal, Utah, in 1970 and 1971. Comparison of water content-depth profiles show excellent agreement at the end of a 9- day run in 1970 on oats seeded to alfalfa. In 1971 with alfalfa as the crop, the data show best agreement, between predicted and computed water content-depth profiles, 48 hours after any …
An Examination Of The Inorganic Nitrogen Status Of A Soil Of The Alaskan Coastal Tundra Plain, Norton R. Munn
An Examination Of The Inorganic Nitrogen Status Of A Soil Of The Alaskan Coastal Tundra Plain, Norton R. Munn
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This experiment was designed to measure in situ concentrations of NH4+ and NO3--N in a soil of the arctic coastal tundra plain, to determine if nitrification was taking place in this soil and to determine if the vascular plants growing in this soil could assimilate NH4+-N.
The extractable NH4+-N concentration was approximately 40 μg/g in the 01 horizon and 10 μg/g in the 02 horizon. The NO3--N concentration was approximately 5 μg/g in the 01 horizon and 4 μg/g in the 02 …
Potentiometric Titration Of Sulfate Using A Lead-Mercury Amalgam Indicator Electrode, Charles W. Robbins
Potentiometric Titration Of Sulfate Using A Lead-Mercury Amalgam Indicator Electrode, Charles W. Robbins
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A lead sensitive indicator electrode was constructed with a 70 percent lead and 30 percent mercury amalgam billet. Sulfate concentrations in pure solutions, natural waters, and soil saturation extracts were determined potentiometrically using the lead-mercury amalgam indicator electrode and a standard calomel reference electrode. Sulfate concentrations over the range 0.4 to 20 milliequivalents sulfate per liter were determined with an automatic titrator and compared to a turbidimetric method for accuracy and precision. The values obtained by the two methods from twelve saturation extracts and three subsurface drainage waters were not significantly different and the potentiometric method was generally more precise. …
Model For Predicting Simultaneous Distribution Of Salt And Water In Soils, Satish C. Gupta
Model For Predicting Simultaneous Distribution Of Salt And Water In Soils, Satish C. Gupta
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Knowledge of water and salt movement in soils is necessary for development of a management scheme for controlling the quality of irrigation return flow. A computer model was developed to predict the distribution of water and salts in the root zone under varying initial and boundary conditions. The model consists of water flow and salt flow sub-models. The water flow sub-model considers the numerical approximation of the general water flow equation with modification for water loss by evapotranspiration (and thus root extraction). The salt flow sub-model considers the mass flow of salts, chemical exchange, precipitation or dissolution of CaCO3 …

Soil And Plant Analysis For Mineral Deficiencies, M D. Carroll
Soil And Plant Analysis For Mineral Deficiencies, M D. Carroll
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Soil and plant analysis (testing) has its supporters and its critics. Some of the differences are resolved if the distinction is made between the concept and the practice. Most people would agree with the concept of soil and plant analysis but the practice, or service offered, in any agricultural situation can be subject to valid criticism.
This article defines some of the principles involved and illustrates some of the problems, to provide a better understanding of the usefulness and the limitations of soil and plant analysis as a diagnostic aid in plant and animal nutrition.

Dust Storms Cause Yield Losses, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia, C. H. Trotman
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Farmers and research workers are well aware that heavy grazing during summer loosens and exposes soil to the action of strong winds and summer thunder storms. They also realise that dust storms mean soil loss from paddocks, but until now there has been little idea of the effect of these storms on crop yields in subsequent seasons.
A Report On The Condition Of The Gascoyne Catchment, D G. Wilcox, E A. Mckinnon
A Report On The Condition Of The Gascoyne Catchment, D G. Wilcox, E A. Mckinnon
Resource management technical reports
Severe flooding in Carnarvon followed heavy rains on the Gascoyne Catchment in February 1961. The flooding and erosion were extensive enough to suggest that run-off from the catchment was excessive. Lightfoot (1961)* reported that excess run-off was due to degradation of the catchment area. This report will describe the catchment area in terms of the degradation of its rangeland and its susceptibility to erosion.

On November 29, 1971, the Hamilton County Ground Water Con·servation District sponsored a meeting on groundwater management and regulation. The meeting was held at Aurora, Nebraska, and was designed for irrigators from groundwater conservation districts and county irrigation associations. Various men from state and federal agencies spoke about a variety of problems that a.re related to groundwater management. Two of the talks that were presented at the meeting are reproduced here, as is a discussion of the rules and regulations that relate to the use of groundwater in the state of Nebraska.
Capillary-Diffusion And Self-Diffusion Of Liquid Water In Unsaturated Soils, Ronald E. Phillips, V. L. Quisenberry Jr.
Capillary-Diffusion And Self-Diffusion Of Liquid Water In Unsaturated Soils, Ronald E. Phillips, V. L. Quisenberry Jr.
KWRRI Research Reports
Capillary-diffusion coefficients were measured by use of inflow and outflow methods. With both methods the capillary-diffusion coefficients decreased very rapidly with decreasing water content. The lighter textured soils were found to have the higher diffusion coefficients over the entire moisture content range studied, 0 to 1 bar tension.
Self-diffusion coefficients were measured over a moisture content range from air dryness to saturation using 3H as a tracer of water. Each of the soils gave the same diffusion characteristics when the self-diffusion coefficients were expressed as a function of either water content or average number of water layers on the …
