Annual Research Symposium
Background:
The CDC research actively continues gathering information related to short and long-term symptoms that remain following the acute phase of Covid-19 diagnosis (CDC, 2020).
Fatigue and shortness of breath are listed among the most commonly reported long-term symptoms of Covid-19:
- Fatigue
- Shortness of Breath
- Cough
- Joint Pain
- Chest Pain (CDC, 2020).
Evidence suggests that older adults over the age of 60 who have multiple comorbidities are more susceptible and are at a higher risk of contracting the Covid-19 virus thus potentially prolonging recovery time post diagnosis (Greenhalgh, Knight, A’Court, Buxton, & Husain, 2020).

Human trafficking is a complex issue that affects society and the global economy. This societal problem involves the commercial exchange and exploitation of people through forced labor, domestic servitude, and sex trade. Human trafficking is considered the third most profitable organized crime in the world. By analyzing the flow of monetary gains/resources, information and trafficked people from the perspective of traffickers, police force, and advocacy organizations, this research aims to develop a discrete event simulation model to represent this complex system. The following paper describes the developmental process of acquiring data and creating a base model. While the model is …

Carrier-Free Chemo-Ptt/Pdt Ionic Nanomaterials For Combination Cancer Therapy, Samantha Macchi
Arkansas Women in STEM Conference
Herein, we describe a carrier-free combination nanodrug for treatment of cancer. In this work, we combined a photothermal compound and a chemotherapeutic drug using ionic liquid chemistry. We utilized a facile, one-step metathesis approach to replace the counter cation of a near infra-red (NIR) dye (photothermal agent) with a chemotherapeutic cation to synthesize an ionic material-based combination cancer therapy drug to deliver multiple mechanisms simultaneously. The nanodrugs were developed by using a reprecipitation method. The detailed photophysical properties of this new combination therapy molecule was investigated in ethanol solution as well as in nanoparticles forms in aqueous media. The singlet …

Dipolariton Propagation In A Van Der Waals Tmdc With Ψ-Shaped Channel Guides And Buffered Channel Branches, Patrick Serafin, German Kolmakov
Publications and Research
Using a computational approach based on the driven diffusion equation for a dipolariton wave packet, we simulate the diffusive dynamics of dipolaritons in an optical microcavity embedded with a transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) heterogeneous bilayer encompassing a Ψ-shaped channel. By considering exciton dipolaritons, which are a three way superposition of direct excitons, indirect excitons and cavity photons; we are able to drive the dipolaritons in our system by the use of an electric voltage and investigate their diffusive properties. More precisely, we study the propagation of dipolaritons present in a MoSe2-WS2 heterostructure, where the dipolariton propagation is …

Luminescent Metal-Organic Frameworks For The Detection Of Alcohols, Lucas Stehle, Kristi A. Kneas, Jeffrey A. Rood
Summer Scholarship, Creative Arts and Research Projects (SCARP)
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), porous materials composed of metal ions and organic linkers, have broad applications in separation, small molecule storage, and catalysis. Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) hold great potential in the development of sensors, and, with their relatively straightforward syntheses that produce predictable, homogeneous, extended structures, should result in good sensor-to-sensor reproducibility and uniform response. In addition, subtle differences in overall LMOF structure, metal ion coordination, pore surfaces, and host-guest interactions within pores should have significant impact on observed photoluminescence and provide numerous strategies for analyte detection, which shows promise for the detection of alcohols. Highlighted here is the development …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Oxovanadium Compounds As Potential Insulin Mimetic Molecules, Kaitlyn Mercando, Jeffrey A. Rood
Summer Scholarship, Creative Arts and Research Projects (SCARP)
Oxovanadium(IV) complexes have numerous applications in diverse areas such as catalysts for organic transformations and as anti-fungal agents. Complexes that this research focused on have shown potential in acting as insulin mimetics. The goal of this research was to synthesis and fully characterize a new series of oxovanadium complexes and then investigate the insulin mimetic properties of the complexes with adipose cell culture work. Vanadyl complexes involving a series of salicylaldiminato ligands [C6H5N=CHC6H4OH (L1), 2,6-iPrC6H3N=CHC6H4OH (L2), C6H5N=CH-3,5-tBu2C6H2OH (L3) and 2,6-iPrC6H3N=CH-3,5-tBu2C6H2OH (L4)] were synthesized and structurally characterized. The ligand set was investigated due to the ease of sterically tuning the substituents …

Summer Scholarship, Creative Arts and Research Projects (SCARP)
Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are materials that contain metal centers coordinated by organic molecules that form an extended, porous lattice. These MOFs are of interest in the field of sensing for their unique properties such as high stability, high surface area, high crystallinity, and ability to perform small molecule exchange. Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) are of specific interest since they contain the potential to detect odorless volatile organic compounds (VOCs) via adsorption into the porous framework. Luminescent properties can be imparted to MOFs in several ways. This project focused on the inclusion of a luminescent osmium complex into the MOF scaffold. …

Improvement In 14-3-3 Binding Site Prediction, Katherine K. Mccormack
ScholarsArchive Data
The 14-3-3 family of phospho-binding proteins regulate a variety of major cellular processes through interaction with a network of dynamic proteins. Deregulation of the 14-3-3 interaction network contributes to a variety of degenerative disorders and cancers. Our lab focuses on identifying novel 14-3-3 interactions and understanding how 14-3-3 binding regulates protein function. A major gap in this process is that identifying the phospho-site where 14-3-3 docks on a given protein is time- and resource-consuming. Prediction algorithms have been developed to predict canonical 14-3-3 binding sites, however, there are many non-canonical sites that existing software is unable to predict. To fill …

Extending Single Entity Electrochemistry Towards The Detection Of Single Bacteria In Micro Volumes, Ashley Tubbs, Junaid Ahmed, Julio C. Alvarez
Graduate Research Posters
Single entity electrochemistry (SEE) is an emerging electroanalytical technique with the ability to push the limit of detection of electrochemical sensors to the single particle level. It measures the change in current over time, making SEE rapid, simple, and cost-effective. The type of current response observed in the scan can provide information about the physiochemical processes underlying the signal. While SEE was originally developed to detect single molecules and nanoparticles, it has been widely applied to micron-sized particles, including emulsion droplets, bacteria, viruses, and mammalian cells. Some recent advances in this technique have focused on the detection of microscopic quantities …

Computational Modeling For Decision-Making Under Climate Change Uncertainty: Reservoir Simulation Game, Julianne Quinn
All ECSTATIC Materials
Almost every decision you make is under uncertainty. Will I need a rain jacket in the afternoon? Will they say yes if I ask them out? Is 1 hour enough time to finish this assignment? Oftentimes, we can use computational modeling to simulate different scenarios of what might happen in the future to inform what decisions are best on average, or what decisions minimize the worst case outcome. For example, you could decide what player to draft for your Fantasy Football team by simulating player performance. In this activity, we will simulate how much water to release from a dam …

Publications and Research
Lissajous curves, named after Jules Antoine Lissajous (1822-1880) are generated by the parametric equations =() and =() in its simplistic form. Others have studied these curves and their applications like Nathaniel Bowditch in 1815, and they are often referred to as Bowditch curves as well. Lissajous curves are found in engineering, mathematics, graphic design, physics, and many other backgrounds. In this project entitled “Parametric Art” this project will focus on analyzing these types of equations and manipulating them to create art. We will be investigating these curves by answering a series of questions that elucidate their purpose. Using Maple, which …

Understanding Of Aerosol Transmission Of Covid 19 In Indoor Environments, Adama Barro, Cathal O'Toole, Jacob S. Lopez, Matthew Quinones, Sherene Moore
Publications and Research
Our reason for discussing severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) or 2019 novel corona virus (Covid-19), is to understand its aerosol transmission characteristics in indoor spaces and to mitigate further spread of this disease by designing a new HVAC system. The problem that we are tackling is the spread of covid-19 droplets through aerosol transmission by looking at potential engineering solutions to the existing HVAC systems. The purpose is to eradicate the spread of the COVID-19 by testing indoor spaces in an effort to understand the effectiveness of ventilation controls. We believe that scientists and engineers have not …

Mathematics and Computer Science Presentations
Sonification is the process of deriving an audio representation of a time series which conveys important information about that time series. Otology and vision science have established that humans process audio information more quickly than visual information, and sonification can convey data to the visually impaired. In our work, we implement pipelines using Python/Numpy, and we handle both ordinary 1D time series and multivariate time series. For 1D time series, we find that using data to modulate the pitch or timing of preselected sounds (such as sine waves) simply and effectively captures repeating patterns and anomalies/outliers within the data. To …
