Temporal Trends And Factors Associated With Extent Of Delay To Hospital Arrival In Patients With Acute Myocardial Infarction: The Worcester Heart Attack Study, Jorge Yarzebski, Robert Goldberg, Joel Gore, Joseph Alpert

Jorge L. Yarzebski

Factors associated with delay to hospital arrival after the onset of symptoms suggestive of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) were examined in the late 1960s and 1970s, but recent data concerning these characteristics are limited. The purpose of the present study was to examine overall and temporal distributions of the extent of patients' delay from the time of onset of AMI symptoms to hospital arrival and factors associated with delay in seeking medical care from a multihospital, population-based perspective. Review of medical records was undertaken of patients hospitalized with a discharge diagnosis of AMI in 16 teaching and community hospitals in …

A Coastal Environment Field And Laboratory Activity For An Undergraduate Geomorphology Course, Jean Ellis, Paul Rindfleisch

Jean Taylor Ellis

A field and laboratory exercise for an undergraduate geomorphology class is described that focuses on the beach. The project requires one day of fieldwork and two laboratory sessions. In the field, students measure water surface fluctuations (waves) with a pressure sensor, survey beach profiles, collect sediment samples, and observe the beach state. In the laboratory, students wash and dry sediments, complete a grain size analysis, and determine sediment volumes. Students produce a report that includes analysis of wave data and beach profiles and a discussion of their findings.

A Framework For Computational Thinking Across The Curriculum, Ljubomir Perkovi´C, Amber Settle, Sungsoon Hwang, Joshua Jones

Sungsoon Hwang

We describe a framework for implementing computational thinking in a broad variety of general education courses. The framework is designed to be used by faculty without formal training in information technology in order to understand and integrate computational thinking into their own general education courses. The framework includes examples of computational thinking in a variety of general education courses, as well as sample in-class activities, assignments, and other assessments for the courses. The examples in the different courses are related and differentiated using categories taken from Denning Great Principles of Computing, so that similar types of computational thinking appearing in …

This paper is predominantly a review of literature on the emerging mobile application area known as location-based social networking. The study applies the social informatics framework to the exploratory question of what effect location based social networking may have on relationships between people. The classification model used in the paper relates previous research on location based services and online social networking together. Specifically the wider study is concerned with literature which identifies the impact of technology on trust with respect to friendship. This paper attempts to draw out the motivations behind using location based social networking applications and the implications …

Social-Technical Issues Facing The Humancentric Rfid Implantee Sub-Culture Through The Eyes Of Amal Graafstra, Amal Graafstra, K. Michael, M.G. Michael Jun 2010

Social-Technical Issues Facing The Humancentric Rfid Implantee Sub-Culture Through The Eyes Of Amal Graafstra, Amal Graafstra, K. Michael, M.G. Michael

Professor Katina Michael

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags and transponders have traditionally been used to identify domesticated animals so that they can be reunited with their owners in the event that they stray. In the late 1990s, industry started to investigate the benefits of using RFID to identifying non-living things throughout the supply chain toward new efficiencies in business operations. Not long after, people began to consider the possibilities of getting RFID tag or transponder implants for themselves. Mr Amal Graafstra of the United States is one of the first, and probably most well-known ‘do it yourselfer’ (DIY) implantees, who enjoys building customized projects …

Carbon Bio-Sequestration Within The Phytoliths Of Economic Bamboo Species, Jeffrey Parr, Leigh Sullivan, Bihua Chen, Gongfu Ye, Zheng Wiepeng May 2010

Carbon Bio-Sequestration Within The Phytoliths Of Economic Bamboo Species, Jeffrey Parr, Leigh Sullivan, Bihua Chen, Gongfu Ye, Zheng Wiepeng

Jeffrey Parr

The rates of carbon bio-sequestration within silica phytoliths of the leaf litter of 10 economically important bamboo species indicates that (a) there is considerable variation in the content of carbon occluded within the phytoliths (PhytOC) of the leaves between different bamboo species, (b) this variation does not appear to be directly related to the quantity of silica in the plant but rather the efficiency of carbon encapsulation by the silica. The PhytOC content of the species under the experimental conditions ranged from 1.6% to 4% of the leaf silica weight. The potential phytolith carbon bio-sequestration rates in the leaf-litter component …

Geochemistry (Δ13c, Δ15n, 13c Nmr) And Residence Times ( 14c And Osl) Of Soil Organic Matter From Red-Brown Earths Of South Australia: Implications For Soil Genesis, Evelyn Krull, Erick Bestland, Jan Skjemstad, Jeffrey Parr, A Mee

Jeffrey Parr

Soil forming processes important to the development of Red-Brown Earths (duplex soils) in southeastern Australia have been investigated by a combination of techniques, including isotopic (δ13C, δ15N, 14C), spectroscopic (13C NMR, MIR), optically stimulated luminescence dating (OSL) and phytolith analyses. A distinct increase in clay content, corresponding changes in the abundance of major elements, as well as changes in organic chemistry (13C NMR), stable isotope trends (δ13C, δ15N), and phytolith abundance, are apparent in the transition from the very sandy A horizon to the clayey B horizon in three soil profiles from the Coonawarra–Padthaway region of South Australia. These structural …

Reactive Trace Element Enrichment In A Highly Modified, Tidally Inundated Acid Sulfate Soil Wetland: East Trinity, Australia, Annabelle Keene, Scott Johnston, Richard Bush, Edward Burton, Leigh Sullivan May 2010

Reactive Trace Element Enrichment In A Highly Modified, Tidally Inundated Acid Sulfate Soil Wetland: East Trinity, Australia, Annabelle Keene, Scott Johnston, Richard Bush, Edward Burton, Leigh Sullivan

Associate Professor Edward D Burton

This study examines the abundance of trace elements in surface sediments of a former acid sulfate soil (ASS) wetland subjected to marine tidal inundation. Sediment properties of this highly modified study site are compared with those of an adjacent unmodified, intertidal mangrove forest. Whilst some trace elements (Al, Cd, Mn, Ni and Zn) were clearly depleted due to mobilisation and leaching in the previous oxic–acidic phase, other trace elements (As and Cr) displayed significant enrichment in the tidally inundated ASS. Many trace elements were strongly associated with the reactive Fe and acid volatile sulfide (AVS) fractions, suggesting that trace elements …

The Effect Of Ion-Pairing On The Open Circuit Potential Of 3-Mercaptoproprionic Acid Modified Gold Electrodes, Mark Anderson, Alice Harper Apr 2010

The Effect Of Ion-Pairing On The Open Circuit Potential Of 3-Mercaptoproprionic Acid Modified Gold Electrodes, Mark Anderson, Alice Harper

Mark R. Anderson

Open circuit potential (OCP) measurement is used to monitor the charge of a monolayer of 3-mercaptopropionic acid. OCP is determined by the concentrations of the reduced and oxidized forms of a redox couple in the solution adjacent to the modified interface. OCP values were monitored in the presence of the one-electron redox couple Fe(CN)63-/4- as a function of solution pH. The OCP measured at basic pHs was different from the acidic OCP due to differences in electrostatic interactions between the interface and the redox species as described by the Nernst equation. The influence of ion-pairing with the monolayer is studied …

Abundance And Fractionation Of Al, Fe And Trace Metals Following Tidal Inundation Of A Tropical Acid Sulfate Soil, Scott Johnston, Edward Burton, Richard Bush, Annabelle Keene, Leigh Sullivan, C Smith, Angus Mcelnea, Colin Ahern, Bernard Powell Apr 2010

Abundance And Fractionation Of Al, Fe And Trace Metals Following Tidal Inundation Of A Tropical Acid Sulfate Soil, Scott Johnston, Edward Burton, Richard Bush, Annabelle Keene, Leigh Sullivan, C Smith, Angus Mcelnea, Colin Ahern, Bernard Powell

Associate Professor Edward D Burton

Tidal inundation was restored to a severely degraded tropical acid sulfate soil landscape and subsequent changes in the abundance and fractionation of Al, Fe and selected trace metals were investigated. After 5 a of regular tidal inundation there were large decreases in water-soluble and exchangeable Al fractions within former sulfuric horizons. This was strongly associated with decreased soil acidity and increases in pH, suggesting pH-dependent immobilisation of Al via precipitation as poorly soluble phases. The water-soluble fractions of Fe, Zn, Ni and Mn also decreased. However, there was substantial enrichment (2¨C5¡Á) of the reactive Fe fraction (FeR; 1 M HCl …

Spatial And Temporal Changes In Estuarine Water Quality During A Post-Flood Hypoxic Event, Vanessa Wong, Scott Johnston, Richard Bush, Leigh Sullivan, Christina Clay, Edward Burton, Peter Slavich Apr 2010

Spatial And Temporal Changes In Estuarine Water Quality During A Post-Flood Hypoxic Event, Vanessa Wong, Scott Johnston, Richard Bush, Leigh Sullivan, Christina Clay, Edward Burton, Peter Slavich

Associate Professor Edward D Burton

A major fish kill occurred in the Richmond River estuary in January 2008 due to oxygen depletion following extensive overbank flooding. This paper examines spatial and temporal changes in the chemistry of main channel waters, thereby identifying the primary sources of deoxygenating water. Over 40 km of the mid- to lower estuary main channel was deoxygenated within seven days of the flood peak. Hypoxia was confined to downstream of the confluences with mid-estuary backswamp basins and occurred during the later phase of the flood recession. Water chemistry at key locations in the estuary indicated elevated concentrations of redox sensitive species …

Arsenic Effects And Behavior In Association With The Fe(Ii)-Catalysed Transformation Of Schwertmannite, Edward Burton, Scott Johnston, Kym Watling, Richard Bush, Annabelle Keene, Leigh Sullivan Mar 2010

Arsenic Effects And Behavior In Association With The Fe(Ii)-Catalysed Transformation Of Schwertmannite, Edward Burton, Scott Johnston, Kym Watling, Richard Bush, Annabelle Keene, Leigh Sullivan

Associate Professor Edward D Burton

In acid-mine drainage and acid-sulfate soil environments, the cycling of Fe and As are often linked to the formation and fate of schwertmannite (Fe8O8(OH)8−2x(SO4)x). When schwertmannite-rich material is subjected to near-neutral Fe(III)-reducing conditions (e.g., in reflooded acid-sulfate soils or mining-lake sediments), the resulting Fe(II) can catalyze transformation of schwertmannite to goethite. This work examines the effects of arsenic(V) and arsenic(III) on the Fe(II)-catalyzed transformation of schwertmannite and investigates the associated consequences of this mineral transformation for arsenic mobilization. A series of 9-day anoxic transformation experiments were conducted with synthetic schwertmannite and various additions of Fe(II), As(III), and As(V). X-ray diffraction …
