Spin Effects In The Effective Quantum Field Theory Of General Relativity, A Ross, Br Holstein Jun 2007

Spin Effects In The Effective Quantum Field Theory Of General Relativity, A Ross, Br Holstein

Barry R Holstein

The calculation of gravitational scattering of particles with various spin configurations in the framework of effective quantum field theory of general relativity is presented. We find that the long-range quantum and classical corrections to the spin-independent piece and the spin–orbit coupling piece of the scattering amplitude and the scattering potential are universal for different spin configurations, which leads us to propose this universality to be true for arbitrary spins. Furthermore, we give the leading corrections to the spin–spin coupling, and a comparison with scattering in QED is made.

Design Of A Gas Tight Water Sampler For Auv Operations, Christopher Roman, R. Camilli May 2007

Design Of A Gas Tight Water Sampler For Auv Operations, Christopher Roman, R. Camilli

Christopher N. Roman

This paper presents the design and preliminary test results for a small gas tight water sampler intended to work on scientific AUVs. In recent years AUVs have developed into reliable platforms capable of carrying a wide variety of environmental sensors for in-situ chemical measurements. Physical sample collection however remains difficult, due to the combination of space, power and complexity constraints inherent in working with autonomous platforms. The AUV sampler is a small (12 cm times 85 cm) cylindrical package designed to collect eight 20 ml gas tight volumes of water, with each sample maintained at high pressure to depths of …

Confidence Intervals For Biomarker-Based Human Immunodeficiecny Virus Incidence Estimates And Differences Using Prevalent Data, Ron Brookmeyer, S Cole, H Chu Dec 2006

Confidence Intervals For Biomarker-Based Human Immunodeficiecny Virus Incidence Estimates And Differences Using Prevalent Data, Ron Brookmeyer, S Cole, H Chu

Ron Brookmeyer

Prevalent biological specimens can be used to estimate human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) incidence using a two-stage immunologic testing algorithm that hinges on the average time, say T, between testing HIV positive on highly and less sensitive enzyme immunoassays. Common approaches to confidence interval (CI) estimation for this incidence measure have included (1) ignoring the random error in T or (2) employing a Bonferroni adjustment to the box method. The authors present alternative Monte Carlo-based CIs for this incidence measure, as well as CIs for the biomarker-based incidence difference; standard approaches to CIs are typically appropriate for the incidence ratio. Angular Dependent Magnetorestriction Study Of Cecoin5, Catalin Martin, Victor Correa, Kenneth Purcell, Timothy Timothy, Eric Palm, Stanley Tozer, George Schmiedeshoff, J Cooley

George Schmiedeshoff

Using a capacitive dilatometer designed to operate on the rotating stage of a top loading dilution refrigerator probe, we measured the magnetorestriction ( L(H)-L(0))/L(0), of the Heavy Fermion Superconductor CeCoIn5, along all three crystallographic direction, and with the magnetic field applied parallel both to the superconducting ab-planes and to the c-axis. When B||ab, the c-axis magnetorestriction features, besides a sharp jump at the upper critical field, a continuous, second-order like, transition at a lower field, which is consistent with previous observations from specific heat measurements. Our results are consistent with a field induced modulation of the superconducting order parameter (FFLO …
