Generating Shape Invariant Potentials, Asim Gangopadhyaya Dec 2007

Generating Shape Invariant Potentials, Asim Gangopadhyaya

Asim Gangopadhyaya

We transform the shape invariance condition, a difference-differential equation of supersymmetric quantum mechanics, into a local partial differential equation. We develop a new method for generating translationally shape invariant potentials from this equation. We generate precisely all the known shape invariant potentials, and argue that there are unlikely to be others.

Claisen–Schmidt condensations, yielding only water as a by-product, performed on building blocks serving as shape-selective male or female terminals and unions, enable the preparation of diverse molecular structures including novel linear rods and semi-elliptical, rectangular or trapezoidal macrocycles. Isoaromatization affords a corresponding range of phenol-formaldehyde derivatives, in atom economical reactions.

George Voulgaris

Amongst other ocean state parameters, the development of a wave measurement program was supported as part of the Southeast U.S. Atlantic Coastal Ocean Observing System (SEACOOS). The program focused on supporting nearshore wave measurements using both cabled and autonomous systems but also examined the feasibility of using HF Radar systems for remote estimation of wave parameters. The nearshore stations have provided a significant database on directional wave climate for a number of nearshore locations in the region that provide valuable information to coastal engineers and managers for sustainable development along the coast of the southeastern United States. The ability of …

Teaching Structural Geology Through Integrated Field Observation And Modeling, Phillip Resor Dec 2007

Teaching Structural Geology Through Integrated Field Observation And Modeling, Phillip Resor

Phillip G Resor

Research in Earth and Environmental Sciences is becoming increasingly quantitative and process-based. This trend is driven by the widespread availability of digital data sets and high-power computing as well as the need to develop predictive models of earth processes to address societal problems. To address these changes in the field I integrate traditional aspects of structural geology including field observation and three-dimensional visualization with quantitative process-based methods in a series of topical course modules. Two examples of this approach are: 1) An integrated investigation into rock fracture that includes performing Nick Nickelsen's plaster of paris dike in Jello experiment (Davis …

Photogrammetric 3d Mapping Of The Permian Reef, Nm And Tx, Usa, Phillip Resor, George Bennum, Eric Flodin, Jeremy Fairbanks

Phillip G Resor

Although the Permian Capitan depositional system is perhaps one of the best-exposed and most thoroughly studied steep-rimmed carbonate systems, the role of synsedimentary deformation in the development of the platform geometry is still poorly understood. We have undertaken an effort to map 3D stratal and structural architecture in two regions of the Guadalupe Mountains, Slaughter and Big Canyons, to better constrain present-day geometry and quantify the distribution and magnitude of syn- and post-depositional deformation. The resulting 3D geologic models serve to inform and constrain mechanical models aimed at understanding the process of synsedimentary deformation, including formation of early fracture systems …

Integrating Geomechanical Modeling And Three-Dimensional Mapping To Constrain Deformation Associated With Growth Of The Permian Capitan Reef Complex, Phillip Resor, Eric Flodin Dec 2007

Integrating Geomechanical Modeling And Three-Dimensional Mapping To Constrain Deformation Associated With Growth Of The Permian Capitan Reef Complex, Phillip Resor, Eric Flodin

Phillip G Resor

The stratal geometry of the Permian Capitan Reef Complex has been influenced by syn-sedimentary deformation including tilting, folding, Previous HitfracturingTop, and faulting of strata. The importance of these effects has been a topic of debate for decades and impacts our understanding of the initial sedimentary geometry as well as the distribution of early-formed fracture systems. We use geomechanical finite element modeling to predict the magnitude and distribution of syn-sedimentary deformation associated with a prograding shelf margin. The model is linear elastic with heterogeneous layering comprised of four principal facies (platform, reef, upper slope, and lower slope/basin). In order to simulate …

Bayesian Density Forecasting Of Intraday Electricity Prices Using Multivariate Skew T Distributions, Anastasios Panagiotelis, Michael Smith Dec 2007

Bayesian Density Forecasting Of Intraday Electricity Prices Using Multivariate Skew T Distributions, Anastasios Panagiotelis, Michael Smith

Michael Stanley Smith

Electricity spot prices exhibit strong time series properties, including substantial periodicity, both inter-day and intraday serial correlation, heavy tails and skewness. In this paper we capture these characteristics using a first order vector autoregressive model with exogenous effects and a skew t distributed disturbance. The vector is longitudinal, in that it comprises observations on the spot price at intervals during a day. A band two inverse scale matrix is employed for the disturbance, as well as a sparse autoregressive coefficient matrix. This corresponds to a parsimonious dependency structure that directly relates an observation to the two immediately prior, and the …

Optimum Healthcare Image Smoothing And Restoration Based On The Two-Dimensional Arma Model, Terry O'Neill, Jack Penm, Johathan Penm Dec 2007

Optimum Healthcare Image Smoothing And Restoration Based On The Two-Dimensional Arma Model, Terry O'Neill, Jack Penm, Johathan Penm

Terry O'Neill

A two-dimensional autoregressive - moving average (ARMA) model has been recently developed by Penm (1999) which leads to optimum recursive enhancement procedures for realistic image data. This paper considers the application of these electronic healthcare informatics procedures to data whose spatial covariance function appears to vary exponentially with Euclidean distance. Specifically, the identification problem is considered, an optimal recursive algorithm based on a two-dimensional ARMA model is developed for a specific example, and this algorithm is compared with the ad-hoc method of successive orthogonalisation approximations.

Tuberculosis Screening For International Students At A Midwestern Liberal Arts College, Grace Goetzke, Victor Addona, Chad M. Topaz

Chad M. Topaz

Participants: 318 international students at Macalester College screened for latent tuberculosis infection via tuberculin skin tests (TST) from 2004-2008. Objective: To estimate positive TST probability based on countries of residency and history of BCG vaccination. Methods and Results: 52% of students had a positive TST. Logistic regression modeling shows that a positive TST is insignificantly correlated with history of BCG vaccination (p=0.910) but is significantly negatively correlated with residence in the European Union (p=0.00502) and the Middle East (p=0.00451), and positively correlated with residence in North America (p=0.00151). Conclusions: There is a significant relationship between TST result and residence in …

Preliminary Model Tests For The Design Of A Gliding Deep Water Elevator, Christopher Roman, T. Gregory, E. Martin, A. Sanguinetti, J. Drummond

Christopher N. Roman

This paper presents progress on the design of a "smart elevator" to be used in conjunction with deep sea ROV operations. Deep sea elevators are gravity driven untethered platforms used to deliver and or return items from the sea floor. Elevators are used when items are too large or heavy to be handled by the ROV, or when the turn around time to recover and redeploy the ROV system for sample removal is prohibitive. Unfortunately, efficiency is complicated by the precision with which elevators can be landed at a specific location on the bottom and recovered on the surface because …

Mitigation Of Biases Using The Schmidt-Kalman Filter - Art. No. 66990q, Randy Paffenroth, Roman Novoselov, Scott Danford, Marcio Teixeira, Stephanie Chan, Aubrey Poore

Randy C. Paffenroth

Fusion of data from multiple sensors can be hindered by systematic bias errors. This may lead to severe degradation in data association and track quality and may result in a large growth of redundant and spurious tracks. Multi-sensor networks will generally attempt to estimate the relevant bias values (usually, during sensor registration), and use the estimates to debias the sensor measurements and correct the reference frame transformations. Unfortunately, the biases and navigation errors are stochastic, and the estimates of the means account only for the "deterministic" part of the biases. The remaining stochastic errors are termed "residual" biases and are …
