Phase-Morphology Map Of Polymer-Blend Thin Films Confined To Narrow Strips, Bi-Min Zhang Newby, R. Composto Apr 2014

Phase-Morphology Map Of Polymer-Blend Thin Films Confined To Narrow Strips, Bi-Min Zhang Newby, R. Composto

Bi-min Zhang Newby

Upon lateral confinement, a critical polymer-blend film at 200 degreesC has been directed to form tube, capsule, confined domain, and multiple domain configurations. A phase-morphology map is produced by varying the confinement width (W) and film thickness (h(0)), and interpreted using a single pore model. Using the known correlation length, capsule length, and W, the boundary, in terms of W/h(0), between configurations is predicted and found to be in good agreement with experiment. This morphology map has potential applications for microencapsulating drugs and self-assembled conducting wires.

The Hot Hand In Number Matching Lottery Games, Mintaek Lee Apr 2014

The Hot Hand In Number Matching Lottery Games, Mintaek Lee

Mintaek Lee

This project examines how many respondents are influenced by the Hot Hand Fallacy and Law of Small Numbers when playing a number matching lottery game. Three sets of previous winning numbers for a lottery game were provided to participants, and they were asked to estimate the likelihood of each number being drawn in the next drawing. Responses from people with less statistical background were more distorted from the theoretical probability than responses from people with more statistical background. The majority of the responses were sufficient to verify the initial hypothesis. The linear regression model was also constructed to predict the …

Emsian (Early Devonian) Tetracorals (Cnidaria) From Grattai Creek, New South Wales, Anthony Wright

Anthony Wright

The tetracoral species Phillipsastrea scotti sp. nov. and Trapezophyllum grattaiensis sp. nov. are described from strata assigned to the middle Emsian (nothoperbonus to inversus conodont zones: Early Devonian) part of the Cunningham Formation at Grattai Creek, west of Mudgee, N.S.W. For comparison with the former, Phillipsastrea oculoides, from the Early Devonian (late Pragian or early Emsian) Garra Formation in the Wellington area of N.S.W., is revised on the basis of the type material; new longitudinal thin sections show indisputable horseshoe dissepiments and trabecular fans in this species.

Recent Discoveries And A Review Of The Ordovician Faunas Of New Zealand, Ian Percival, Roger Cooper, Yong Yi Zhen, J Simes, Anthony Wright

Anthony Wright

Fossiliferous Ordovician rocks are of limited extent in New Zealand, being largely restricted to northwest Nelson and Westland in the northern part of the South Island, with some isolated exposures at the southern extremity of Fiordland (Fig. 1). The known stratigraphic record, though incomplete, covers much of the period, and new information from study and revision of old collections (mostly dating from the 1960s and 1970s) continues to fill in the gaps. These data are critical to a better understanding of New Zealand’s place in the Ordovician world, when it occupied an isolated position facing the palaeo-Pacific Ocean offshore to …

New Genera Of Early Devonian Calceoloid Corals From Australia And France, Anthony Wright

Anthony Wright

Two new Early Devonian genera and species of the family Calceolidae, phylum Cnidaria, are erected; these are Richtereola disruptus n. gen., n. sp., from the Emsian (perbonus conodont zone) of the Taemas area, NSW, Australia and from the Emsian Izarne Formation (gronbergi conodont zone) of the Montagne Noire, southern France; and Savageola unicus n. gen., n. sp. from the Lochkovian (eurekaensis conodont zone) Mandagery Park Formation at Manildra, NSW, Australia. These taxa are essentially defined on opercular characters; well-preserved opercula are essential for confident generic assignment of calceoloid material. Savageola is known only from eastern Australia, but Richtereola is known …

Anthony Wright

This ancient phylum of mostly marine organisms is best known for its contribution to geomorphological features, forming thousands of square kilometres of coral reefs in warm tropical waters. Their fossil remains contribute to some limestones. Cnidarians are also significant components of the plankton, where large medusae – popularly called jellyfish – and colonial forms like Portuguese man-of-war and stringy siphonophores prey on other organisms including small fish. Some of these species are justly feared by humans for their stings, which in some cases can be fatal. Certainly, most New Zealanders will have encountered cnidarians when rambling along beaches and fossicking …

Network Analysis Methods And Tools For Sme C-Commerce, Mark Brogan

Mark Brogan

This paper reflects on network analysis methods and their utility for understanding network behaviours that impinge upon clustering and C-commerce innovation. The primary focus of the paper is an analysis framework that combines elements representative of both quantitative and interpretivist approaches. The framework was applied to the analysis of information and knowledge flows between Small-to-Medium Sized Tourism Enterprizes (SMTEs) that participated in a portal quasi-experiment based on the Cape Range Ningaloo World Heritage Region of Western Australia.

Knowledge Networking For Innovation: Social Network Analysis (Sna) And Heuristics For Knowledge Diffusion., Mark Brogan Apr 2014

Knowledge Networking For Innovation: Social Network Analysis (Sna) And Heuristics For Knowledge Diffusion., Mark Brogan

Mark Brogan

In a Small to Medium Sized Tourism Enterprise (SMTF) industry context, the author applied the methods and techniques of Social Network Analysis (SNA) to analyze online business knowledge and information flows between business operators. The objective of the analysis was to determine the implications of network behavior for C-commerce innovation in a small network of SMTE operators. The work provides insights into how network behavior shapes the formation of human capital (Coleman, 2003) required for C-commerce innovation and suggests a notion of heuristics for optimization of knowledge networks and network engineering for small business networks.

C-Commerce Innovation: Unravelling The Effects Of Knowledge Ties On Embedded Network Structure, Mark Brogan, Leisa Armstrong

Mark Brogan

Relative to other nations, economically significant activity in Australia and New Zealand is skewed toward micro and small business. Issues of scale and- access to resources and expertise, suggest issues for Australian and New Zealand SMEs seeking to compete in the era of the global Internet economy. Collaborative, or so-called C-commerce, has arisen as a concept and key enabler for clustering of SMEs to secure resource advantage and to promote global competitiveness. Through the lens of a C-commerce case study in tourism, this paper explores network/actors that impinge upon C-commerce innovation in an SME setting. The paper demonstrates the usefulness …

Adaptive Calibration For Prediction Of Finite Population Totals, Raymond Chambers, Robert Clark Apr 2014

Adaptive Calibration For Prediction Of Finite Population Totals, Raymond Chambers, Robert Clark

Robert Clark

Sample weights can be calibrated to reflect the known population totals of a set of auxiliary variables. Predictors of finite population totals calculated using these weights have low bias if these variables are related to the variable of interest, but can have high variance if too many auxiliary variables are used. This article develops an adaptive calibration approach, where the auxiliary variables to be used in weighting are selected using sample data. Adaptively calibrated estimators are shown to have lower mean squared error and better coverage properties than non-adaptive estimators in many cases.

Susceptibility Of Quagga Mussels (Dreissena Rostriformis Bugensis) To Hot-Water Sprays As A Means Of Watercraft Decontamination, Sean Comeau, Scott Rainville, Wen Baldwin, Emily Austin, Shawn Gerstenberger, Chad Cross, Wai Wong Mar 2014

Susceptibility Of Quagga Mussels (Dreissena Rostriformis Bugensis) To Hot-Water Sprays As A Means Of Watercraft Decontamination, Sean Comeau, Scott Rainville, Wen Baldwin, Emily Austin, Shawn Gerstenberger, Chad Cross, Wai Wong

Shawn Gerstenberger

The recent spread of dreissenid mussels to various bodies of water in the western US has sparked interest by many state and federal agencies to develop protocols to stop further expansion. Quagga mussels (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) are of particular importance as they are currently the most widespread dreissenid species in the region. This project examined the susceptibility of quagga mussels to hot-water sprays at different temperatures and durations of spray contact at Lake Mead (Nevada-Arizona, USA). Emersed adult quagga mussels were exposed to hot-water sprays at 20, 40, 50, 54, 60, 70, and 80°C for 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, …

An Evaluation Of Mercury Concentrations In Three Brands Of Canned Tuna, Shawn Gerstenberger, Adam Martinson, Joanna Kramer

Shawn Gerstenberger

There is widespread concern over the presence of Hg in fish consumed by humans. While studies have been focused on determining the Hg concentration in sport fish and some commercial fish, little attention has been directed to canned tuna; it is widely held that concentrations are low. In the present study, the amount of Hg present in canned tuna purchased in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, was examined, and the brand, temporal variation, type, and packaging medium impacts on Hg concentrations in tuna were explored. A significant (p < 0.001) brand difference was noted: Brand 3 contained higher Hg concentrations ($\bar x$ …

Conformal Gravity Holography In Four Dimensions, Robert Mcnees Mar 2014

Conformal Gravity Holography In Four Dimensions, Robert Mcnees

Robert A McNees IV

We formulate four-dimensional conformal gravity with (anti–)de Sitter boundary conditions that are weaker than Starobinsky boundary conditions, allowing for an asymptotically subleading Rindler term concurrent with a recent model for gravity at large distances. We prove the consistency of the variational principle and derive the holographic response functions. One of them is the conformal gravity version of the Brown–York stress tensor, the other is a “partially massless response”. The on shell action and response functions are finite and do not require holographic renormalization. Finally, we discuss phenomenologically interesting examples, including the most general spherically symmetric solutions and rotating black hole …
