Measures For The Degree Of Overlap Of Gene Signatures And Applications To Tcga, Shuangge Ma Dec 2013

Measures For The Degree Of Overlap Of Gene Signatures And Applications To Tcga, Shuangge Ma

Shuangge Ma

For cancer and many other complex diseases, a large number of gene signatures have been generated. In this study, we use cancer as an example and note that other diseases can be analyzed in a similar manner. For signatures generated in multiple studies on the same cancer type/outcome, and for signatures on different cancer types, it is of interest to evaluate their degree of overlap. Many of the existing studies simply count the number (or percentage) of overlapped genes shared by two signatures. Such an approach has serious limitations. In this study, as a demonstrating example, we consider cancer prognosis …

Mike Channer

Mantle-driven differential uplift has been proposed to contribute to dynamic typography in the western United States. Neogene and ongoing mantle flow is postulated to be driven by upper mantle convection and to cause subtle broad-scale differential uplift that affects surface topography. This study focuses on the possible connection between mantle convection and surface topography along the Jemez lineament in New Mexico and is motivated by tomographic images from the EarthScope experiment that show this zone is underlain by low-velocity mantle that potentially could drive uplift. To test this possible connection, we constructed a longitudinal profile of the Rio San Jose …

Women Of The Academy And The Sea: 2000–2014, Suzanne Oconnell

Suzanne OConnell

There is good news and bad news for twenty-first century women oceanographers. Tremendous progress has been made in breaking the glass ceiling, both in positions and in prestigious awards and medals (Table 1). There were many firsts, including the first woman to head the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA; Jane Lubchenco) and the first woman to head the United States Geological Survey (USGS; Marcia McNutt). Commendably, other women are succeeding the first women in these very high level positions. Kathy Sullivan, the first woman to walk in space, succeeds Lubchenco. McNutt’s successor at the USGS not been confirmed; however, …

Optimised Random Mutations For Evolutionary Algorithms, Sean Mcgerty, Frank Moisiadis Dec 2013

Optimised Random Mutations For Evolutionary Algorithms, Sean Mcgerty, Frank Moisiadis

Frank Moisiadis

To demonstrate our approaches we will use Sudoku puzzles, which are an excellent test bed for
evolutionary algorithms. The puzzles are accessible enough for people to enjoy. However the more complex
puzzles require thousands of iterations before an evolutionary algorithm finds a solution. If we were
attempting to compare evolutionary algorithms we could count their iterations to solution as an indicator
of relative efficiency. Evolutionary algorithms however include a process of random mutation for solution
candidates. We will show that by improving the random mutation behaviours we were able to solve
problems with minimal evolutionary optimisation. Experiments demonstrated the random …

Bias In Estimating The Causal Hazard Ratio Using Two-Stage Instrumental Variable Methods, Fei Wan, Dylan S. Small, Justin E. Bekelman, Nandita Mitra Dec 2013

Bias In Estimating The Causal Hazard Ratio Using Two-Stage Instrumental Variable Methods, Fei Wan, Dylan S. Small, Justin E. Bekelman, Nandita Mitra

fei wan

Two stage instrumental variable methods are commonly used to determine the causal effects of treatments on survival in the presence of measured and unmeasured confounding. Two stage residual inclusion (2SRI) has been the method of choice over two stage predictor substitution (2SPS) in clinical studies. We directly compare the bias in the causal hazard ratio estimated by these two methods. Under a principal stratification framework, we derive a closed form solution for asymptotic bias of the causal hazard ratio among compliers for both the 2SPS and 2SRI methods when survival time follows the Weibull distribution with random censoring. When there …

Communicating Climate Change: Are Stories Better Than ‘Just The Facts?’, Michael D. Jones Dr. Dec 2013

Communicating Climate Change: Are Stories Better Than ‘Just The Facts?’, Michael D. Jones Dr.

Michael D. Jones

Postpositive policy scholarship has long asserted the importance of narratives—or stories—in shaping public policy through public opinion. In part, the Narrative Policy Framework (NPF) was developed to empirically test this assertion. To assess the relationship between policy narratives and public opinion, NPF posits several causal mechanisms including narrative transportation. Narrative transportation is a measure used to assess the extent to which individuals exposed to a story are “transported” into that story. NPF hypothesizes that as narrative transportation increases the reader of the story will (i) have more positive affect for characters within the story; and (ii) will find the story …

Optimal Allocation Of Distributed Reactive Power Resources Under Network Constraints For System Loss Minimization, L Meegahapola, S Abbott, D Morrow, T Littler, D Flynn Dec 2013

Optimal Allocation Of Distributed Reactive Power Resources Under Network Constraints For System Loss Minimization, L Meegahapola, S Abbott, D Morrow, T Littler, D Flynn

Dr Lasantha G Meegahapola

Abstract-Reactive power control is an important control issue for distribution system operators due to increased penetration of distributed generation. The work presented in this paper utilizes the inherent reactive power capability of the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind farms to optimize the system losses while considering the network constraints in the system. The IEEE-30 bus system was modified by installing DFIG based wind farms in the medium voltage (MV) region creating three wind clusters in the network. The steady-state analysis was conducted to illustrate the loss minimization capability of the DFIG based wind farms under different reactive power configurations. …

Frequency Dynamics During High Ccgt And Wind Penetrations, Lasantha Meegahapola, Damian Flynn Dec 2013

Frequency Dynamics During High Ccgt And Wind Penetrations, Lasantha Meegahapola, Damian Flynn

Dr Lasantha G Meegahapola

Frequency stability is the paramount concern for secure and reliable operation of a power system. High wind penetration levels are reported in power systems with high thermal generation, and hence its likely to result high wind and combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) penetrations during system operation since CCGTs are the most preferable choice for the thermal generation. The doubly-fed induction generators (DFIGs) do not provide any inertial response while the CCGTs have unique frequency response during the system frequency disturbances. Therefore, CCGT turbine response characteristics and the zero inertial response may influence on frequency dynamics of a power network. The main …

Giant Interlayer Magnetoresistances And Strong Anisotropy In P-Type Sb2te3 Single Crystals, Zengji Yue, Xiaolin Wang, S Dou Dec 2013

Giant Interlayer Magnetoresistances And Strong Anisotropy In P-Type Sb2te3 Single Crystals, Zengji Yue, Xiaolin Wang, S Dou

Zengji Yue

Anisotropic interlayer magneto-transport properties have been studied over a broad range of temperatures and magnetic fields in p-type Sb2Te3 single crystals. Giant interlayer magnetoresistance (MR) of up to 400% was observed, which exhibits quadratic field dependences in low fields and becomes linear at high fields without any trend towards saturation. The interlayer MR displays strong anisotropy and is attributable to the anisotropy of the Fermi surface. The observed giant anisotropic interlayer MR could find applications in p-type Sb2Te3 based magneto-electronic devices.

Waste Management And Water Quality Issues In Coastal States Of Nigeria: The Ogun State Experience, Solomon Isiorho Dec 2013

Waste Management And Water Quality Issues In Coastal States Of Nigeria: The Ogun State Experience, Solomon Isiorho

S Isiorho

Waste dumping and inadequate waste management efforts are having adverse impact on the environment and humans in Nigerian coastal cities. Nine of the 36 states in Nigeria border the Atlantic Ocean. Twenty-five percent of the Nigerian population is found in the coastal states. These states, with the exception of Lagos, Ogun and Ondo, are more prone to petrochemical waste arising from petroleum exploration. Filed investigations, surveys and literature searches were conducted in order to accomplish the task of this research. Field studies included testing for dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand, nitrates, phosphates, total solids and pH.
