Modulated release of dexamethasone (DEX) by electrical stimulation was investigated using chitosan (CHIT) and single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) host carrier films. Drug-loaded CHIT/SWNT composite films were solution-cast on carbon paper substrates. Unstimulated and stimulated release of DEX in phosphate buffer saline (PBS) solution at pH 7.4 was measured by UV–visible spectroscopy. For experiments involving electrical stimulation, the effects of voltage amplitude, electrode polarity, and SWNT content were investigated. Accelerated and complete DEX release was observed upon potentiostatic application of a negative potential (−0.8 V vs. Ag/AgCl) to the composite film, which was attributed to the electrostatic repulsions of SWNTs …

Concerted Ho2 Elimination From Alpha-Aminoalkylperoxyl Free Radicals: Experimental And Theoretical Evidence From The Gas-Phase Nh2 Chco2 - + O2 Reaction, Gabriel Da Silva, Benjamin Kirk, Celli Lloyd, Adam Trevitt, Stephen Blanksby

We have investigated the gas-phase reaction of the α- aminoacetate (glycyl) radical anion (NH2 •CHCO2−) with O2 using ion trap mass spectrometry, quantum chemistry, and statistical reaction rate theory. This radical is found to undergo a remarkably rapid reaction with O2 to form the hydroperoxyl radical (HO2 •) and an even-electron imine (NHCHCO2−), with experiments and master equation simulations revealing that reaction proceeds at the ion−molecule collision rate. This reaction is facilitated by a low-energy concerted HO2 • elimination mechanism in the NH2CH(OO•)CO2− peroxyl radical. Contemporary lipidomics protocols are dependent on conventional tandem mass spectrometry for lipid identification. This approach is extremely powerful for determining lipid class and identifying the number of carbons and the degree of unsaturation of any acyl-chain substituents. Such analyses are however, blind to isomeric variants arising from different carbon−carbon bonding motifs within these chains including double bond position, chain branching, and cyclic structures. This limitation arises from the fact that conventional, low energy collision-induced dissociation of even-electron lipid ions does not give rise to product ions from intrachain fragmentation of the fatty acyl moieties. Fulvenallene and fulvenallenyl are the respective C7H6 and C7H5 global minima, yet their importance to combustion has only recently emerged. We have studied the pyrolysis of these species theoretically to obtain rate constants and compare our results to pyrolysis mass spectrometry experiments for product identification. Master equation modeling reveals that fulvenallene rapidly dissociates to fulvenallenyl + H, and that fulvenallenyl dissociates to form propargyl plus diacetylene, with lesser amounts of i-C5H3 (CH2CCCCH)/n-C5H3 (CHCCHCCH) plus acetylene. We report on results from two experimental techniques concerned with the reactions of small carbon based radicals (CN and CH) with unsaturated hydrocarbons. First, low temperature (100-300K) kinetic studies using a pulse Laval nozzle technique probe the reactions of the CN radical with benzene and toluene. The CN + benzene is found to be a fast, barrierless reaction. But in the case of toluene, two reaction pathways are in competition, one of which back dissociates to the reactants. Network security analysis based on attack graphs has been applied extensively in recent years. The ranking of nodes in an attack graph is an important step towards analyzing network security. This paper proposes an alternative attack graph ranking scheme based on a recent approach to machine learning in a structured graph domain, namely, Graph Neural Networks (GNNs). The gas-phase CN + propene reaction is investigated using synchrotron photoionization mass spectrometry (SPIMS) over the 9.8 - 11.5 eV photon energy range. Experiments are conducted at room temperature in 4 Torr of He buffer gas. The CN + propene addition reaction produces two distinct product mass channels, C3H3N and C4H5N, corresponding to CH3 and H elimination, respectively. The CH3 and H elimination channels are measured to have branching fractions of 0.59 + 0.15 and 0.41 + 0.10, respectively. Aromatic radicals form in a variety of reacting gas-phase systems, where their molecular weight growth reactions with unsaturated hydrocarbons are of considerable importance. We have investigated the ion–molecule reaction of the aromatic distonic N-methyl-pyridinium-4-yl (NMP) radical cation with 2-butyne (CH3C≡CCH3) using ion trap mass spectrometry. Comparison is made to high-level ab initio energy surfaces for the reaction of NMP and for the neutral phenyl radical system. The NMP radical cation reacts rapidly with 2-butyne at ambient temperature, due to the apparent absence of any barrier. Graph Self-Organizing Maps (GraphSOMs) are a new concept in the processing of structured objects using machine learning methods. The GraphSOM is a generalization of the Self-Organizing Maps for Structured Domain (SOM-SD) which had been shown to be a capable unsupervised machine learning method for some types of graphstructured information. We report the finding of a previously unidentified candidate massive young stellar object at the precise coordinates right ascension 18 08 38.2 and declination -19 51 50 in the region G10.47+0.27. This object was found by correlation of previously published data. At these coordinates the following key tracers of massive star formation are in a compact area; 4.5 micrometer infrared, a Class II methanol maser, two ionized hydrogen regions and three water masers. Atomically flat nanofilms were formed during growth of Ga on a Si(111) surface using an In surfactant above the melting point of Ga (and In–Ga eutectic) throughout Ga coverages of 0.17 to 5 monolayers (0.17 ≤ ΘGa ≤5). Unique superstructures such as a quasisquare-lattice (QS) structure at ΘGa=3 to 4 and a 5x5 structure at 0Ga=5 appeared as ΘGa increased. The QS structure had Ga dimer layers similar to the square lattices of an alpha-Ga(100) plane but also maintained the 1x1 structure of Si(111). A novel ternary composite, polypyrrole (PPy)-coated sulphur-carbon nanotube (S-CNT), is synthesised by using an in situ, one-pot method. Firstly, elemental sulfur is loaded into the CNT network by a solution-based processing technique. Then conducting PPy is coated on the surface of the S-CNT composite to form the S-CNT-PPy ternary composite by carrying out polymerization of the pyrrole monomer in situ. The ternary composite is tested as a cathode for lithium-sulfur batteries. The results show that PPy coating improves significantly the performance of the binary composites (S-CNT and S-PPy). Three first order magnetic phase transitions (FOMTs) have been detected and evaluated over the temperature range from 5 to 340 K at fields up to 9 T in PrMn1.4Fe0.6Ge2. All three FOMTs, from (with decreasing temperature) an antiferromagnetic (AFl) to a c-axis canted ferromagnetic (Fmc) state, to a c-axis canted antiferromagnetic (AFmc) state, and then to an Fmc state plus an additional Pr-sublattice magnetic contribution (Fmc + F(Pr)), exhibited temperature and field-induced transition features. Receptive field profiles of simple cells in the visual cortex have been shown to resemble even- symmetric or odd-symmetric Gabor filters. Computational models employed in the analysis of textures have been motivated by two-dimensional Gabor functions arranged in a multi-channel architecture. More recently wavelets have emerged as a powerful tool for non-stationary signal analysis capable of encoding scale-space information efficiently. Magnetocaloric effects (MCE) at multiple magnetic phase transition temperatures in PrMn1.4Fe0.6Ge2 were investigated by heat capacity and magnetization measurements. PrMn1.4Fe0.6Ge2 is of a re-entrant ferromagnet and performs multiple magnetic phase transitions in the temperature range from 5 to 340 K. A large magnetic entropy change (−ΔSM) 8.2 J/kg K and adiabatic temperature change (ΔTad) 4.8 K are observed for a field change of 0–1.5 T around 25.5 K, associated with the field-induced first order magnetic phase transition (FOMT) from the antiferromagnetic to the ferromagnetic state with an additional Pr magnetic contribution. This report details correlated electrical, mechanical and magnetic behaviour in BiFeO3 ceramics doped with 10% Ln (Ln D Sm, Nd) ions on the Bi, or perovskite A, site and synthesized by a sol-gel method. The ceramics exhibit bulk piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties and clear ferroelectric domain patterns through piezoresponse force microscopy. Resonant ultrasound spectroscopy, dielectric spectroscopy and magnetometry studies show correlated magnetoelectromechanical behaviour and the existence of weak ferromagnetism for both compositions. Economists often have to use temporally aggregated data in causality tests. A number of theoretical studies have pointed out that temporal aggregation has distorting effects on causal inference. This paper provides a quantitative assessment of the magnitude of the distortions created by temporal aggregation by plugging in theoretical cross covariances into the limiting values of least squares estimates. Some Monte Carlo results and an application are provided to assess the impact in small samples. A new generation of applications requires reduced power consumption without sacrificing performance. Instruction pipelining is commonly used to meet application performance requirements, but some implementation aspects of pipelining are inefficient with respect to energy usage. We propose static pipelining as a new instruction set architecture to enable more efficient instruction flow through the pipeline, which is accomplished by exposing the pipeline structure to the compiler. While this approach simplifies hardware pipeline requirements, significant modifications to the compiler are required.
