To measure the effectiveness of learning activities, intensive research works have focused on the process of competency building through the identification of learning stages as well as the setup of related key performance indictors to measure the attainment of specific learning objectives. To organize the learning activities as per the background and skills of each learner, individual learning styles have been identified and measured by several researchers. Despite their importance in personalizing the learning activities, these styles are difficult to implement for large groups of learners. They have also been rarely correlated with each specific learning stage. New approaches are, …

Serious flooding can happen when rain falls on snow, which we call a rain-on-snow (ROS) event. Increasing our understanding of the behavior of floods resulting from ROS events can help us design better systems to manage flood water and prevent it from causing damage. This thesis explores how ROS events affect streamflow in the Western United States by examining the weather conditions that precede a streamflow surge. We classify stream surges as ROS or non-ROS induced based on these weather conditions, which helps us separate floods caused by ROS events from those caused by other factors. By comparing these different …

Accurate load forecasting is essential for the efficient and reliable operation of power systems. Traditional models primarily utilize unidirectional data reading, capturing dependencies from past to future. This paper proposes a novel approach that enhances load forecasting accuracy by fine tuning an attention-based model with a bidirectional reading of time-series data. By incorporating both forward and backward temporal dependencies, the model gains a more comprehensive understanding of consumption patterns, leading to improved performance. We present a mathematical framework supporting this approach, demonstrating its potential to reduce forecasting errors and improve robustness. Experimental results on real-world load datasets indicate that our …

A New Fractional Derivative Extending Classical Concepts: Theory And Applications, Mutaz Mohammad, Mohamed Saadaoui Sep 2024

A New Fractional Derivative Extending Classical Concepts: Theory And Applications, Mutaz Mohammad, Mohamed Saadaoui

All Works

In this paper, a novel general definition for the fractional derivative and fractional integral based on an undefined kernel function is introduced. For 0<α≤1, this definition aligns with classical interpretations and is applicable for calculating the derivative in an open negative interval I⊆[a,+∞),a∈R. Additionally, when α=1, the definition coincides with the classical derivative. Fundamental properties of the fractional integral and derivative, including the product rule, quotient rule, chain rule, Rolle's theorem, and the mean value theorem, are derived. These properties are illustrated through various applications to demonstrate their applicability. Furthermore, some applications of solving fractional nonlinear systems of integro-differential equations using framelets are presented.

Path planning is a crucial element of mobile robotics applications, attracting considerable interest from academics. This paper presents a path-planning approach that utilises the Enhanced Firefly Algorithm (EFA), a new meta-heuristic technique. The Enhanced Firefly Algorithm (FA) differs from the ordinary FA by incorporating a linear reduction in the α parameter. This modification successfully resolves the constraints of the normal FA. The research involves experiments on three separate maps, using the regular FA and the suggested Enhanced FA in 20 different runs for each map. The evaluation criteria encompass the algorithms’ ability to move from the initial location to the …

Seed-based revegetation is increasingly pursued in wetland restoration, but seed and seedling mortality is high and can be further limited by environmental stressors, like hydrology and salinity. The interactive effects of hydrology and salinity on native plants, especially in the presence of invasive plants, are less clear. In greenhouse and mesocosm experiments, we tested different hydrologic and salinity conditions on the growth of native seed mixes and Phragmites australis, a widespread wetland invader in North America. The greenhouse experiment tested two mixes (forb mix, graminoid mix), while mixes in the mesocosm experiment combined forbs and graminoids chosen for broad …

Reliability targeted snow loads (RTLs) measure the weight in accumulated snow (i.e. snow load) that a roof is required to support to ensure the probability of failure is suf- ficiently low. This calculation has historically relied upon a probability distribution that characterizes the ratio between the annual maximum ground snow load to the annual max- imum roof snow load, a quantity referred to as Gr. The best available data for estimating Gr comes from Canadian case studies from the 1950s and 1960s. However, much of the data was never digitized, with only approximations of data being made available in scanned …

Calculations From On The Existence Of Periodic Traveling-Wave Solutions To Certain Systems Of Nonlinear, Dispersive Wave Equations, Jacob Daniels

Mathematics and Statistics Student Research and Class Projects

In the field of nonlinear waves, particular interest is given to periodic traveling-wave solutions of nonlinear, dispersive wave equations. This thesis aims to determine the existence of periodic traveling-wave solutions for several systems of water wave equations. These systems are the Schr¨odinger KdV-KdV, Schr¨odinger BBM-BBM, Schr¨odinger KdV-BBM, and Schr¨odinger BBM-KdV systems, and the abcd-system. In particular, it is shown that periodic traveling-wave solutions exist and are explicitly given in terms of cnoidal, the Jacobi elliptic function. Certain solitary-wave solutions are also established as a limiting case of the periodic traveling-wave solutions, that is, as the elliptic modulus approaches one.

Water development and the proliferation of invasive riparian vegetation has led to widespread habitat loss and simplification of rivers in the western United States, contributing to the imperilment of native fishes. Here, we quantify channel narrowing and vegetation encroachment, which are conspicuous indicators of riverine habitat degradation, along approximately 400 km of three dryland tributaries of the upper Colorado River. To accomplish this, we conducted a comparative analysis of aerial photographs from historical (1930s) and contemporary (2010s or 2020s) time periods and utilized Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data and Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA) to determine contemporary canopy cover of …

Easy, Bright, Fluorescence Demonstration Of Buffer Action, Mariana Dykstra, Yejin Chung, Mark Muyskens

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

We report an attractive update to the demonstration of acid–base buffer action that is appropriate for ease of use and getting attention in the classroom. The twist is based on new fluorophore information and the recent availability of UV flashlights serving as an ideal, portable excitation light source. The pH-dependent fluorescence comes from a choice among three natural sources, namely narra tree wood extract, kidneywood extract, and scopoletin, which is a purchasable coumarin, that all perform equally well. We provide practical details for performing the buffer demonstration at scales of 100 and 1000 mL and give background information for context.
