The Shoreline Management Model is a GIS spatial model that determines appropriate shoreline best management practices using available spatial data and decision tree logic. Available shoreline conditions used in the model include the presence or absence of tidal marshes, beaches, and forested riparian buffers, bank vegetation cover, bank height, wave exposure (fetch), nearshore water depth, and proximity of coastal development to the shoreline. The model output for shoreline best management practices is displayed in the locality Comprehensive Map Viewer. One GIS shapefile is developed that describes two arcs or lines representing practices in the upland area and practices at the …

Deciphering The Associations Between Gene Expression And Copy Number Alteration Using A Sparse Double Laplacian Shrinkage Approach, Shuangge Ma
Shuangge Ma
Both gene expression levels (GEs) and copy number alterations (CNAs) have important implications in the development of complex diseases. GEs are partly regulated by CNAs, and much effort has been devoted to understanding their relations. The expression of a gene can be regulated by multiple CNAs, and one CNA can regulate the expression of multiple genes. In addition, multiple GEs (CNAs) can be correlated with each other. The existing methods for associating GEs with CNAs have limitations in deciphering the complex data structures. In this study, we develop a sparse double Laplacian shrinkage approach. It jointly models the effects of …
A Penalized Robust Semiparametric Approach For Gene-Environment Interactions, Shuangge Ma
A Penalized Robust Semiparametric Approach For Gene-Environment Interactions, Shuangge Ma
Shuangge Ma
In genetic and genomic studies, gene-environment (G*E) interactions have important implications. Some of the existing G$\times$E interaction methods are limited by analyzing a small number of G factors at a time, by assuming linear effects of E factors, by assuming no data contamination, and by adopting ineffective selection techniques. In this study, we propose a new approach for identifying important G*E interactions. It jointly models the effects of all E and G factors and their interactions. A partially linear varying coefficient model (PLVCM) is adopted to accommodate possible nonlinear effects of E factors. A rank-based loss function is used to …
Rainich-Type Conditions For Perfect Fluid Spacetimes, Dionisios Krongos, Charles G. Torre
Rainich-Type Conditions For Perfect Fluid Spacetimes, Dionisios Krongos, Charles G. Torre
Research Vignettes
In this worksheet we describe and illustrate a relatively simple set of new Rainich-type conditions on an n-dimensional spacetime which are necessary and sufficient for it to define a perfect fluid solution of the Einstein field equations. Procedures are provided which implement these Rainich-type conditions and which reconstruct the perfect fluid from the metric. These results provide an example of the idea of geometrization of matter fields in general relativity, which is a purely geometrical characterization of matter fields via the Einstein field equations.

2013 Chesapeake Bay Sav Coverage, Sav Data Administrator, Virginia Institute Of Marine Science
Data
Abstract: The 2013 Chesapeake Bay SAV Coverage was mapped from 1:24,000 black and white aerial photography to assess water quality in the Bay. Each area of SAV was interpreted from the rectified photography and classified into one of four density classes by the percentage of cover. The SAV beds were entered into an SDE GIS fetaure class using the quality control procedures documented below. The dataset contains all SAV areas that were identified from the areas flown. Some areas that are presumed to contain no SAV were not flown. Some small beds, particularly along narrow tributaries may not have been …

Cartan Subalgebras, Compact Roots And The Satake Diagram For Su(2, 2), Ian M. Anderson
Tutorials on... in 1 hour or less
In this worksheet we use the 15-dimensional real Lie algebra su(2, 2) to illustrate some important points regarding the general structure theory and classification of real semi-simple Lie algebras.
1. Recall that a real semi-simple Lie algebra g is called a compact Lie algebra if the Killing form is negative definite. The Lie algebra g is compact if and only if all the root vectors for any Cartan subalgebra are purely imaginary. However, if the root vectors are purely imaginary for some choice of Cartan subalgebra it is not necessarily true that the Lie algebra is compact.
2. A real …

Mercury (Hg) is a potent neurotoxin and globally reducing environmental levels is seen as paramount for protecting human and wildlife health. In 2013, many countries finalized the negotiations on, and have now signed, the Minamata Convention on Mercury, which commits participating countries to reduce emissions and use of mercury. Successful implementation of the treaty will require adequate verification through global monitoring.
