The Center for Coastal Resources Management (CCRM) at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) has generated Shoreline Situation Reports (SSRs) for coastal localities in the state of Maryland. This effort compliments a parallel effort in Virginia by the same group. SSRs were developed by VIMS in the 1970s for Virginia and have been the foundation for shoreline management planning in Tidewater Virginia ever since. CCRM has developed new protocols for collecting, disseminating, and reporting data relevant to shoreline management issues using state of the art mapping and remote sensing techniques. New SSRs are being generated on a county by …

Quantum Amplified Isomerization: A New Chemically Amplified Imaging System In Solid Polymers, Douglas R. Robello, Joseph P. Dinnocenzo, Samir Farid, Jason G. Gillmore, Samuel W. Thomas Iii

Faculty Publications

A new imaging system based on a photoinitiated electron transfer chain reaction is reported. Specifically, irradiation of 9,10-dicyanoanthracene (sensitizer) leads to the conversion of Dewar benzene derivatives (reactants) to benzene derivatives (products) within solid polymer films. The mechanism of the reaction may involve chemical amplification with cation radicals ("holes") as the catalytic species. We present herein studies of both molecularly doped polymers and polymers containing Dewar benzene moieties attached to side chains. The refractive index of the materials could be tuned within a narrow range using this photochemical reaction, as demonstrated by the writing of persistent gratings in forced Rayleigh …

Technological Implications For Privacy, David Kotz Jun 2004

Technological Implications For Privacy, David Kotz

Computer Science Technical Reports

The World-Wide Web is increasingly used for commerce and access to personal information stored in databases. Although the Web is ``just another medium'' for information exchange, the fact that all the information is stored in computers, and all of the activity happens in computers and computer networks, makes it easier (cheaper) than every to track users' activities. By recording and analyzing user's activities in the Web, activities that may seem to be quite private to many users, it is more likely than ever before that a person's privacy may be threatened. In this paper I examine some of the technology …

Solvent-Free Conversion Of Alpha-Naphthaldehyde To 1-Naphthoic Acid And 1-Naphthalenemethanol: Application Of The Cannizzaro Reaction, John J. Esteb, Keith M. Glogorich, Stacey A. O'Reilly Jan 2004

Solvent-Free Conversion Of Alpha-Naphthaldehyde To 1-Naphthoic Acid And 1-Naphthalenemethanol: Application Of The Cannizzaro Reaction, John J. Esteb, Keith M. Glogorich, Stacey A. O'Reilly

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The Cannizzaro reaction is routinely covered in organic textbooks, but owing to the shortage of suitable procedures for the undergraduate teaching laboratory, this reaction is seldom performed in a first-year organic chemistry class. In this experiment, powdered potassium hydroxide and α-naphthaldehyde are heated under solvent-free conditions to produce 1-naphthoic acid and 1-naphthalenemethanol in 86% and 79% yields, respectively. The solvent-free nature of this procedure greatly reduces the quantity of waste generated by students relative to the typical solvent-based method of preparation. Data Sets

The Bay Study Group was created by the City of Tampa in 1976 to monitor the effects of pollution abatement that occurred in Hillsborough Bay when the city’s wastewater treatment plant was upgraded from primary to advanced treatment in 1979. The Bay Study Group documented a remarkable restoration of water quality parameters and biological indicators in Hillsborough Bay from the mid 1980s until 2009, when it was disbanded. This zip Geodatabase file contains the photo point locations, aerial photos, and flight maps for the year 2004.

Simple Epoxide Formation For The Organic Laboratory Using Oxone, John J. Esteb Jan 2004

Simple Epoxide Formation For The Organic Laboratory Using Oxone, John J. Esteb

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

We present an epoxide formation experiment for a second-semester organic chemistry laboratory. This oxidation utilizes Oxone, a commercially available oxidizing agent, in the industrially relevant process of epoxide formation. The oxidant performing the oxidation is dimethyldioxirane, which is formed in situ. This experiment demonstrates a simple synthesis of an epoxide and formation of a secondary oxidizing agent.

Parallaxes And Distance Estimates For 14 Cataclysmic Variable Stars, John R. Thorstensen Dec 2003

Parallaxes And Distance Estimates For 14 Cataclysmic Variable Stars, John R. Thorstensen

Dartmouth Scholarship

I used the 2.4 m Hiltner Telescope at MDM Observatory in an attempt to measure trigonometric parallaxes for 14 cataclysmic variable stars. Techniques are described in detail. In the best cases the parallax uncertainties are below 1 mas, and significant parallaxes are found for most of the program stars. A Bayesian method that combines the parallaxes together with proper motions and absolute magnitude constraints is developed and used to derive distance estimates and confidence intervals. The most precise distance derive here is for WZ Sge, for which I find 43: 3.1:6 1:5 pc. Six Luyten Half-Second stars with previous precise …

Case-Based Reasoning In Fixture Design, David Brown, Iain Boyle, Kevin Rong Sep 2003

Case-Based Reasoning In Fixture Design, David Brown, Iain Boyle, Kevin Rong

David C. Brown

Fixtures are designed to accurately locate and secure a part during machining operations such that the part can be manufactured to design specifications. To reduce the design costs associated with fixturing, various computer-aided fixture design (CAFD) methods have been developed through the years to assist the fixture designer. One approach is to use a case-based reasoning (CBR) approach where relevant design experience is retrieved from a design library, and adapted to provide a new fixture design solution. Indexing design cases is a critical issue in any CBR approach, and CBR systems can suffer from an inability to distinguish between cases …
