In the activated state of small-conductance Ca2+-activated potassium (SK) channels, calmodulin interacts with the HA/HB helices and the S4-S5 linker. CyPPA potentiates SK2a and SK3 channel activity but not the SK1 and IK subtypes. Here, we report that the subtype-selectivity of CyPPA relies on the HA/HB helices. Mutating residues in the HA (V420) and HB (K467) helices of SK2a channels to their equivalent residues in IK channels diminished the potency of CyPPA. CyPPA elicited prominent responses on mutant IK channels with an arginine residue in the HB helix substituted for its equivalent lysine residue in the SK2a channels …

Stony Brook Radar Observatory Radar And Lidar Data For February 25, 2020, Mariko Oue, Katia Lamer
Stony Brook Radar Observatory Radar And Lidar Data For February 25, 2020, Mariko Oue, Katia Lamer
SoMAS Research Data
Observations collected during the 25-February-2020 deployment of the Vapor In-Cloud Profiling Radar at the Stony Brook Radar Observatory clearly demonstrate the potential of G-band radars for cloud and precipitation research. The field experiment, which coordinated an X-, Ka, W-and G-band radar, revealed that the differential reflectivity from Ka-G-band pair provides larger signals than the traditional Ka-W pairing underpinning an increased sensitivity to smaller amounts of liquid and ice water mass and sizes. The data include:
1) Vapor In-Cloud Profiling Radar (VIPR) collected on 24-26 February 2020
2) W-band profiling radar (ROGER) collected on 25 February 2020
3) Ka-band Scanning Polarimetric …

Stony Brook Radar Observatory Radar Data For February 20, 2019, Mariko Oue
SoMAS Research Data
Stony Brook Radar Observatory (SBRO) has been in operation since March in 2017 (-73.127E, 40.897N, https://you.stonybrook.edu/radar/). The flagship radar of SBRO is a very sensitive, sophisticated, and well-calibrated Ka-band (35-GHz) scanning fully-polarimetric radar (KASPR). The radar measurements are complemented by two profiling radar systems operating at W-band (94-GHz, ROGER) and K-band (24-GHz, MRRPro). KASPR, ROGER, and MRRPro at SBRO collected triple frequency data during a snow event on February 20, 2019. Analyses of dual wavelength ratio, mean vertical Doppler velocity, and polarimetric radar variables from the triple frequency measurements can be used to identify ice particle types, distinguish among …

Local full diurnal coverage of temperature variations across the turbopause (~ 90 km to 115 km altitude) is achieved by combining the nocturnal observations of a Sodium (Na) Doppler lidar on the Utah State University (USU) campus (41.7?N, 248.2?E) and NASA MIGHTI/ICON daytime observations made in the same vicinity. In this paper, utilizing this hybrid dataset during summer 2020 between June 12th and July 15th, we retrieve the temperature signatures of diurnal and semidiurnal tidal waves in this region. The tidal amplitudes are similar for both components: less than 5 K below ~ 98 km but increase considerably above, up …

Assessment Of The Fluoride Concentration In Drinking Water And Tea In The Arusha Region Of Tanzania, Sophia Bakar, David Kahler, Alanna Bachtlin, Kara Okular, Kathleen Glancey, Abbey Whitewood
Environmental Science Datasets
High fluoride concentrations in drinking water affect millions of people around the world; however, fluoride can come from several sources. The World Health Organization recommends a fluoride concentration in drinking water of no more than 1.5 mg/L; fluoride above this concentration can cause long-term problems known as fluorosis, such as mottled teeth and increased risk of dental caries, or skeletal deformities. Rural communities near Arusha, Tanzania have high fluoride concentrations in their water. Adults and children of the Arusha Region rely heavily on tea for daily water consumption, which has the benefit of disinfection by boiling. Researchers investigated water quality, …

An approximately 4.5 km transect running from lower Portsmouth Harbor seaward onto the inner continental shelf was established to serve as the field site for the Newcastle Backscatter Experiment (NEWBEX). Acoustic backscatter measurements were made along the transect to examine relationships between backscatter and seafloor properties. This transect takes advantage of the diversity and heterogeneity of bottom types in lower Portsmouth Harbor and approach. In support of NEWBEX, a field campaign was undertaken to describe the sedimentologic characteristics of the seafloor along the transect. A total of five cruises were carried out approximately seasonally on November 26, 2012 and June …

Coastal Virginia Social Vulnerability Index At The Block Group Level, Sarah Stafford, Schyler Vander Schaaf
Data
Following other social vulnerability indexes, including the SoVI® developed by the Hazards & Vulnerability Research Institute at the University of South Carolina, this vulnerability index is based on a principal component analysis (PCA). PCA is a statistical technique that takes as its input a matrix of interrelated socioeconomic variables – in this case those considered to measure various dimensions of social vulnerability – and creates a new set of orthogonal principal components that extract the important variation the underlying input data while reducing the noise and redundancy in the data. After conducting the PCA, the researcher combines the newly created …

Privacy-Preserving Non-Participatory Surveillance System For Covid-19-Like Pandemics, Mahmoud Nabil, Ahmed Sherif, Mohamed Mahmoud, Waleed Alsmary, Maazen Alsabaan
Faculty Publications
COVID-19 pandemic has revealed a pressing need for an effective surveillance system to control the spread of infection. However, the existing systems are run by the people’s smartphones and without a strong participation from the people, the systems become ineffective. Moreover, these systems can be misused to spy on people and breach their privacy. Due to recent privacy breaches, people became anxious about their privacy, and without privacy reassurance, the people may not accept the systems. In this paper, we propose a non-participatory privacy-preserving surveillance system for COVID-19-like pandemics. The system aims to control the spread of COVID-19 infection without …

Widespread human SARS-CoV-2 infections combined with human–wildlife interactions create the potential for reverse zoonosis from humans to wildlife. We targeted white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) for serosurveillance based on evidence these deer have angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptors with high affinity for SARS-CoV-2, are permissive to infection, exhibit sustained viral shedding, can transmit to conspecifics, exhibit social behavior, and can be abundant near urban centers. We evaluated 624 prepandemic and postpandemic serum samples from wild deer from four US states for SARS-CoV-2 exposure. Antibodies were detected in 152 samples (40%) from 2021 using a surrogate virus neutralization test. A subset of samples …

Algorhythms: Leveraging Markov Chain-Based Generation Of Functional Harmonies With User-Defined Musical Corpus As A Compositional Tool, Coleman Brockmeier
Honors Projects
Music forms the soundtrack to daily life and serves as an important cultural marker for people around the world. As the world becomes digitized and connected via the internet, the opportunity is increasingly accessible for anyone to share music with the world and to create chart-topping music that defines the cultural vernacular. Many prominent producers have little to no formal musical training, especially in Western music theory. As a result, loop-based music dominates the lists of most-played music on the radio and streaming services, often not deviating from basic functional harmony. With this project, I have created a compositional tool …
