The Recognition, Investigation, Interpretation, And Treatment Of Landslides In The Pacific Northwest, Harry Ludowise Jan 1974

The Recognition, Investigation, Interpretation, And Treatment Of Landslides In The Pacific Northwest, Harry Ludowise

Dissertations and Theses

Certain features unique to the Pacific Northwest influence landsliding in this region. Weakly consolidated sediments, dense vegetation and seasonally concentrated rainfall all contribute to the distinctive conditions that are encountered here.

This study gathers together information applying to the recognition and correction of Pacific Northwest landslides. Treatment practices common to this region are discussed.

A large slide located about 30 miles east of Portland, Oregon along the Clackamas River is used as an example. Exploration, instrumentation, analysis and corrective measures are illustrated.

Biostratigraphy Of The Type Yamhill Formation, Polk County, Oregon, Larry R. Gaston Jan 1974

Biostratigraphy Of The Type Yamhill Formation, Polk County, Oregon, Larry R. Gaston

Dissertations and Theses

One hundred and seventy-four species and varieties of fossil Foraminifera are recorded from thirty-eight localities in the Siletz River Volcanics, Yamhill and Nestucca Formations exposed along Mill and Gooseneck Creeks, in the Northern Coast Range of Oregon. Marginulina holmesi is described as new. The Foraminifera indicate that this sequence was deposited during late Ulatisian and Narizian time, in marine waters at bathyal or lower neritic depths, with cool surface temperatures. The Yamhill Formation can be correlated with Moody Shale member of the Toledo Formation and the Coaledo Formation of Oregon; the McIntosh and Aldwell Formations of Washington; and the upper …

Segmentation Of Chesapeake Bay: A Representative Exercise, Robert E. Ulanowicz, Bruce J. Neilson Jan 1974

Segmentation Of Chesapeake Bay: A Representative Exercise, Robert E. Ulanowicz, Bruce J. Neilson

Reports

The goal of the CRC/RANN Waste Water Program is to provide the tools to management agencies which will enable them to make sound quantitative decisions on the siting of future sewage outfalls and the upgrading or elimination of existing sewage treatment plants. Obviously, the available funds do not permit extensive field studies at every possible outfall site. Therefore, some system is needed which will allow data to be transferred from one area to other areas within the Bay which have similar characteristics. A system of "segmentation"., as suggested by Dr. D. W. Pritchard, was chosen by the Scientific Management Advisory …

A Program To Monitor The Environmental Effects Of Shipyard Expansion : A Final Report, Robert J. Diaz, M. E. Bender Jan 1974

A Program To Monitor The Environmental Effects Of Shipyard Expansion : A Final Report, Robert J. Diaz, M. E. Bender

Reports

Dredging and land reclamation are two of the potentially most damaging activities that man undertakes in estuarine areas. Hampton Roads, the world's largest natural harbor, is a multiple use port, being a major center for fishing and shellfishing, transportation, recreation and industrial sitings. Dredging which is a necessary perpetuation for some of these activities, could be directly or indirectly detrimental to others. It is in such a multiple use situation that environmental alterations, real or potential, must be carefully planned and closely monitored. Projects of the type underway can cause changes in circulation, water depth, turbidity, and patterns qf siltation, …

Function Of Marshes In Reducing Eutrophication Of Estuaries Of The Middle Atlantic Region, D. M. Axelrad, M. E. Bender, K. A. Moore Jan 1974

Function Of Marshes In Reducing Eutrophication Of Estuaries Of The Middle Atlantic Region, D. M. Axelrad, M. E. Bender, K. A. Moore

Reports

Annual nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon budgets for two Virginia salt marshes were determined by monthly measurements of water discharge and constituent concentrations over tidal cycles.

Considering all three forms of phosphorus measured (total, dissolved organic and orthophosphate) there was a net loss from the estuary to the marshes. The data reveal a loss of particulate μhosphorus of estuarine origin to marsh sediments and mineralization of this phosphorus in the marshes with subsequent export of dissolved inorganic and organic phosphorus back to the estuary.

Nitrogen flux data show a loss of nitrate and nitrite to the marshes. Particulate nitrogen is imported …

Limnetic Zooplankton Dynamics In Beaver Reservoir Including An Inventory Of Copepod Species And An Evaluation Of Vertical Sampling Methods, Eugene H. Schmitz Jan 1974

Limnetic Zooplankton Dynamics In Beaver Reservoir Including An Inventory Of Copepod Species And An Evaluation Of Vertical Sampling Methods, Eugene H. Schmitz

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

There can be little doubt that the development of primary food sources (i.e. plankton) is an important factor contributing to fish production. Applegate and Mullan (1968) report that an exceptional sport fish harvest is generally associated with the development of new reservoirs, although the precise reasons for such interrelations are not known. Kramer and Smith (1962) demonstrated the tendency of bass fingerlings to feed on Cladocera in proportion to the latter's abundance, and Hodson (1966) reported the same basic pattern for largemouth and spotted bass fingerlings in Beaver Reservoir. Applegate and Mullan (1969) analyzed the digestive tract contents of larval …

Effects Of Mosquito Control Chemicals On Aquatic Fauna, J. L. Lancaster Jr., M. V. Meisch Jan 1974

Effects Of Mosquito Control Chemicals On Aquatic Fauna, J. L. Lancaster Jr., M. V. Meisch

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

No mosquito abatement districts have ever been organized in Arkansas. Mosquito control efforts have been largely adulticiding operations by either aerial application or ground thermal fogging machines. Practically no chemical applications have been directed at the larval stage in residual water in ditches and depressions from which adult populations arise. Some larviciding with ethyl parathion has been done in ricefields. Although the treatment is very effective in mosquito reduction, voluntary treatment has not been completely successful. Because relatively little insecticide has been used as a larvicide in Arkansas, it was possible to evaluate the effect of recommended larvicides on non-target …

Automation Of The Continuous Coagulation Monitor, Dee Mitchell, James J. Oskowis Jan 1974

Automation Of The Continuous Coagulation Monitor, Dee Mitchell, James J. Oskowis

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

The development of automation in the past 50 years has paralleled the accelerating growth of today’s vast technological society. Automatic control systems are indispensable extensions of man's brain that enable him to monitor and regulate his complex environment. The principles of automatic control have a wide range of applications and interests in virtually every scientific field. The need for automatic control systems in vital applications of environmental engineering is both real and urgent. Extensive pollution has resulted in unavoidable water re-use and in the inevitable establishment of stringent effluent standards. Both water and wastewater treatment processes have necessarily become more …

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Lake Fort Smith, a 525 acre (212 ha) reservoir, was impounded in 1936 as a water supply for the city of Fort Smith. The reservoir is located on Clear Creek (Frog Bayou), a tributary of the Arkansas River, in the Boston Mountains 28 miles (45 km) northeast of the city of Fort Smith in Crawford County, Arkansas. A map and morphometric characteristics of Lake Fort Smith are given in Fig. 1 and Table I (Hoffman, 1951; Nelson, 1952). In 1956 Lake Shepherd Springs, a 750 acre (304 ha) impoundment, was created one mile upstream of Lake Fort Smith (Rorie, 1961). …

Models For Molecular Vibration, Allan Bruce Capps Jan 1974

Models For Molecular Vibration, Allan Bruce Capps

Masters Theses

“The purpose of the investigation is to determine if a classical model can be used to characterize molecular vibrational and librational (restricted rotation) frequencies. In general, the model treats a molecule as asymmetrical and rigid and simulates the intermolecular forces by springs along the bonds. Molecules constrained to a plane and molecules free to move in three dimensions are analyzed. The frequencies of water molecules are investigated, in particular. The model and analytic components are found to function well. Within the limits set for the model, the water molecule simulation is not successful as the motion becomes anharmonic for energy …

Metal Salt Catalyzed Carbenoids The Catalysts In Trialkyl Phosphite Copper (I) Complex Catalyzed Decomposition Of Diazo Compounds, Nguyen Van Thinh Jan 1974

Metal Salt Catalyzed Carbenoids The Catalysts In Trialkyl Phosphite Copper (I) Complex Catalyzed Decomposition Of Diazo Compounds, Nguyen Van Thinh

Masters Theses

"Partial rate data, asymmetric induction studies, interrupted experiments and additives studies indicate that copper(I) salt-phosphite complexes are destroyed during the course of reactions with dimethyl diazomalonate (1) and ethyl diazoacetate (2). All evidence is consistent with the copper(I) being oxidized to copper(II) and copper(0) being oxidized by impurities in the olefin which most probably are hydroperoxides.

Several new copper(I) salt-phosphite complexes were prepared and examined but none proved as effective for decomposing (1) as copper(II) bis acetylacetonate.

The utility of the copper (I) chloride-trimethyl phosphite complex for decomposing (1) is a function of the means of preparation. The three general …

Données Faunistiques Et Ecologiques Sur Les Stenasellidae (Crustacea Isopoda Asellota Des Eaux Souterraines), Guy Magniez Jan 1974

Données Faunistiques Et Ecologiques Sur Les Stenasellidae (Crustacea Isopoda Asellota Des Eaux Souterraines), Guy Magniez

International Journal of Speleology

Some important morphological features, which are discussed here, point out that the Stenasellids (Crustacea Isopoda Asellota) must be considered as a true family (Stenasellidae), independent from the Asellidae. A definition and a renewed diagnosis of the Stenasellidae Dudich, 1924, are given. Their relationships must be pursued, especially in the marine Parastenetroidea and in the psammic Microcerberidae. Until 1938, the group was known only from subterranean waters of southern Europe. Now, several genera and many thermophile species from north-tropical underground waters have been discovered in Africa (5 gen., 12 sp.), Asia (1 gen., 2 sp.) …

Geology And Hydrology Of The El Converto Cave-Spring System, Southwestern Puerto Rico, Barry F. Beck Jan 1974

Geology And Hydrology Of The El Converto Cave-Spring System, Southwestern Puerto Rico, Barry F. Beck

International Journal of Speleology

Whereas the North Coast Tertiary Limestones of Puerto Rico are classic karst locales, their southern counterparts are almost devoid of karst development. The El Convento Cave-Spring System is the most prominent feature of the only large scale karst area developed on the South Coast Tertiary limestones. The karst topography is localized on the middle Juana Diaz Formation, which is a reef facies limestone, apparently because of the high density and low permeability of this zone as compared to the surrounding chalks and marls. In the El Convento System a sinking ephemeral stream combines with the flow from two perennial springs …

Studies On The Abdominal Musculature Of The Subterranean Mysid, Lepidomysis Longipes (Pillai And Mariamma), C. N. Nath

International Journal of Speleology

The musculature of the hypogean mysid, Lepidomysis longipes (Pillai and Mariamma) is remarkably modified. It shows the absence of many muscles and poor development of others in the abdominal region. This is correlated with the subterranean nature of the animal.

Subterranean Crustacea Decapoda Macrura Collected By Mr. L. Botosaneanu During The 1973 Cuban-Roumanian Biospeological Expedition To Cuba, L. B. Holthuis

International Journal of Speleology

During the 1973 Cuban Romanian Biospeleological Expedition to Cuba 5 species of cavernicolous Decapod Crustacea were collected: the Palaemonidae Troglocubanus gibarensis Chace, T. eigenmanni (Hay) and Macrobrachium faustinum lucifugum new subspecies. The second of these species now is reported for the first time from Isla de Pinos. The third form proved to be a new subspecies of Macrobrachium faustinum (De Saussure), a freshwater shrimp which is widely distributed in the West Indies. The new subspecies is not only known from Cuba, but also material from Jamaica, Curacao and Bonaire is reported. A new locality is reported for Barbouria cubensis (Von …
