Un Diploure Japygidé Cavernicole Inėdit De Corse Dipljapyx Beroni N.Sp., J. Pages

International Journal of Speleology

Dipljapyx beroni n.sp. has been collected from two caves in Corsica. From its antennae with 31 articles, chaetotaxia of urites and subcoxal organs well-characterized, it appears to be an endemic Corsican species, situated between D. humberti Grassi found in the western Alps, and D. italicus Silv. peculiar to the Italian Peninsula. It is closely related to the first of those two species. There is no morphologic feature indicating it as a troglophilic species.

Free Amino Acids In A Cave Beetle Darlingtonea Kentuckensis Valentine (Coleoptera: Carabidae), R. J. Sperka

International Journal of Speleology

Free amino acids of Darlingtonea kentuckensis were investigated by two-dimensional, thin-layer chromatography on Silica Gel G. Thirteen amino acids which could be identifìed (alanine, glutamic acid, glycine, histidine, isoleucine and/or leucine, lysine, phenylalanine, proline, serine, threonine, tryptophan, tyrosine and valine) and seven unidentified ninhydrin-positive spots were found. Beta-Alanine, alpha-amino-butyric acid, arginine, aspartic acid, cystine, hydroxyproline and methionine were not detected. No difference was observed in the free amino acids with respect to sex of beetle, time after feeding and method of sample preparation.

Size And Growth Of The Eyes Of The Troglobitic Salamander Typhiotriton Spelaeus, Joseph C. Besharse, Ronald A. Brandon Jan 1974

Size And Growth Of The Eyes Of The Troglobitic Salamander Typhiotriton Spelaeus, Joseph C. Besharse, Ronald A. Brandon

International Journal of Speleology

The eyes of larval T. spelaeus grow by negative allometry, but in allometric coefficients they are not greatly different from E. lucifuga. The major differences in eye size, both absolute and relative to body size, between T. spelaeus and E. lucifuga are established prior Io the larval growth period. The eyes of T. spelaeus cease to grow at metamorphosis and are reduced in size thereafter. In addition, there is increased individual variability and bilateral asymmetry of eye size in adult T. spelaeus compared to both adult E. lucifuga and larval T. spelaeus. This variability, expressed as relative dispersion …

Biochrome Analysis As A Method For Assessing Phytoplankton Dynamics Phase I, Richard L. Meyer Jan 1974

Biochrome Analysis As A Method For Assessing Phytoplankton Dynamics Phase I, Richard L. Meyer

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Selected chemical, physical and biological parameters were determined for a man-made lake, Beaver Lake, on the White River of Arkansas and Missouri. The research program determined the qualitative and quantitative aspects of the temporal and spatial distribution of the algal subcommunities. It was determined that the epipelic, epilithic, epizooic and metaphytic subcommunities had little influence on the euplanktonic subcommunity. The relationship between the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the biochromes chlorophyll-a, -b, and -c and the phytoplankton species clustered into biochrome sets is discussed. The temporal and spatial distributional patterns of temperature, oxygen, ammonia-N, nitrate-N, ortho phosphate-P and silicates are …

Environmental Evaluation Report On The Big Mulberry Creek Basin In Franklin, Madison, Newton, Johnson And Crawford Counties, Arkansas, Edward E. Dale Jr. Jan 1974

Environmental Evaluation Report On The Big Mulberry Creek Basin In Franklin, Madison, Newton, Johnson And Crawford Counties, Arkansas, Edward E. Dale Jr.

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

The environmental evaluation report which follows is based on information supplied by the Corps of Engineers, Little Rock District, available literature, field observations made during the summer of 1972, and results of research now in progress on natural features of the Big Mulberry Basin. Since most major dams, levees, and flood retarding structures now in existence in the Ozarks have been constructed since about 1940, opportunities to make long term studies of their effects have been limited. Also, the natural vegetation, fauna, and archeology of the Big Mulberry Basin have not been extensively investigated, but available sources provide enough information …

Observations Sur Stenasellus Virei Dans Ses Biotopes Naturels (Crustacea Isopoda Asellota Des Eaux Souterraines), Guy Magniez

International Journal of Speleology

Thanks to intensive exploration and to new methods for capturing aquatic underground fauna, 117 localities are now known for Stenasellus virei. The description of some typical biotopes suggests that the species lives as well in karstic waters as in phreatic ones, inside the different environment of the hydrogeological classification of subterranean waters. St. virei buchneri and St. v. hussoni are almost cavernicolous. St. v. angelieri is distributed in the underground waters of Catalonia. St. v. boui is located in the underflow of Salat river basin. St. v. virei is widely distributed in the alluvial water-level of Garonne and Ebro …

Un Nouvel Asellide Interstitiel D'Espagne Méridionale Bragasellus Boui N. Sp. (Crustacea Isopoda Asellota) Et Considérations Sur Les Genres Européens D'Asellides, Jean-Paul Henry, Guy Magniez

International Journal of Speleology

Description of a new, unpigmented and eyeless Asellid, belonging to the iberian genus Bragasellus Henry et Magniez, 1968. Bragasellus boui, n.sp., lives on the bottom of a river that is a tributary of Guadalquivir River (Southern Spain). Bragasellus, Proasellus, Stygasellus and Synasellus are four genuine phyletic lines of European Asellidae, all of them independent of each other, and the authors confirm their validity as true genera.

A Study Of The Subsurface Stratigraphy Of The Upper Cambrian In Western Missouri, Joseph L. Thacker Jr.

Masters Theses

"Megascopic examination of diamond-drill cores supplemented by insoluble residue data provides a usable means of studying the lithologic characteristic of Upper Cambrian strata in the subsurface of western Missouri.

The stratigraphic relationships within each Cambrian formation and the relationships of each Cambrian unit to formations above and below are discussed.

The relationship of Upper Cambrian strata to the Precambrian surface in western Missouri and easternmost Kansas is illustrated. The Lamotte Sandstone is overlapped by the Reagan Sandstone against Precambrian topographic highs and the Bonneterre and lower Davis are replaced by sandstones similar to the Reagan in southwest Missouri and southeast …

Mercury Distribution In A Massive Sulfide Ore Deposit At Balmat, New York, David Ray Jessey Jan 1974

Mercury Distribution In A Massive Sulfide Ore Deposit At Balmat, New York, David Ray Jessey

Masters Theses

"Ore samples consisting of diamond drill core and mine samples, collected from several Balmat ore bodies, were analyzed for their mercury content. The average contents in these ore bodies were found, in ppb, to be: Upper Gleason, 829; Middle and Lower Gleason, 504; Loomis, 546; Fowler, 195; No. 1 Zone, 37; Sylvia Lake, 59; No. 2 Mine, 5. If all of the mercury in these pyrite-sphalerite-galena ores occurs in the sphalerite, then the average sphalerite mercury contents, in ppb, are the following: Upper Gleason, 2490; Middle and Lower Gleason, 2516; Loomis, 2701; Fowler, 1376; No.1 Zone, 384; Sylvia Lake, 408; …

Interpretation Of Imagery Lineations, Logan Creek Area, Southeast Missouri, Gregory Paul Smith Jan 1974

Interpretation Of Imagery Lineations, Logan Creek Area, Southeast Missouri, Gregory Paul Smith

Masters Theses

"Depletion of ore in Missouri's old lead districts and the opening of the state's new lead district adds impetus to understanding and delineating geologic structure in and adjacent to the new lead district. Image and geomorphic analysis, hydrologic data, and subsurface structural contour mapping are used in interpretation of geologic structure in Dent, Shannon, Reynolds, and Carter counties, Missouri. Unlike the time consuming surface geologic mapping, the modes of investigation used in this study enabled the writer to make a larger, regional-scale study with results comparable to those attainable by surface mapping. The area is covered by thick residual soils …

A Study On Two Iodine Containing Peptides Isolated From Porcine Thyroglobulin, Frederick E. Bishop Jr. Jan 1974

A Study On Two Iodine Containing Peptides Isolated From Porcine Thyroglobulin, Frederick E. Bishop Jr.

Masters Theses

"Two iodopeptides were isolated from thyroglobulin that had been digested with trypsin by paper electrophoresis and paper chromatography. The amino acid analysis demonstrated that the amino acid compositions were similar. The N-terminal amino acid of both iodopeptides was shown to be leucine. The amino acid sequence of one of the iodopeptides was determined by the Edman degradation method and digestion with the enzyme Carboxypeptidase A. The sequence was shown to be: NH₂-Leu-Asn-Ala-Ser-Glu-MIT-Gly-Thr-Ser-Gly-COOH. Other workers have shown that synthetic tyrosyl peptides with the sequence Glu-Tyr are iodinated by the thyroid peroxidase enzyme with a greater specificity than other tyrosyl peptides. This …

Kinetic And Thermodynamic Acidities Of Selected Weakly Acidic Hydrocarbons, Darrell R. Strait Jan 1974

Kinetic And Thermodynamic Acidities Of Selected Weakly Acidic Hydrocarbons, Darrell R. Strait

Doctoral Dissertations

"The kinetic and thermodynamic acidities in methanol for bromoform and phenylacetylene have been determined at various temperatures. The thermodynamic acidities of phenylacetylene were obtained through a quench method which involved tritium tagging of the phenylacetylene anions present at equilibrium. With the use of this method, a pKa of 18.34 for phenylacetylene at 0ºC was obtained. Through the use of these acidities, it was shown that the kinetics for these proton exchange processes are not diffusion controlled.

Isotope effects ( kH/ kD) were obtained for chloroform, bromoform and phenylacetylene at three temperatures (0ºC, -10ºC and -20ºC). …

On Integrability And L¹ Convergence Of Certain Cosine Sums, John William Garrett

Doctoral Dissertations

"Rees and Stanojevic altered the standard cosine series and obtained a necessary and sufficient condition for integrability of the altered sum. Here these sums are generalized, and it is shown that such sums converge in L¹-norm"--Abstract, page iv.

Solvability Of Differential Systems Near Singular Points, Leon M. Hall Jan 1974

Solvability Of Differential Systems Near Singular Points, Leon M. Hall

Doctoral Dissertations

"Functional analysis techniques are used to prove a theorem, analogous to the Harris-Sibuya-Weinberg theorem for ordinary differential equations, which yields as corollaries a number of existence theorems for holomorphic solutions of linear functional differential systems of the form zDy'(z) = A(z)y(z) + B(z)y(αz) + C(z)y'(αz) in the neighborhood of the singularity at z = 0"--Abstract, page 2.

Cross Sections For Photoionization Of The 6²P-Fine Structure Levels Of Cesium, John Daniel Jones Jan 1974

Cross Sections For Photoionization Of The 6²P-Fine Structure Levels Of Cesium, John Daniel Jones

Doctoral Dissertations

"The cross sections for photoionization of excited cesium from the 62P3/2- and 6²P1/2-fine structure levels have been measured using a triple crossed-beam apparatus. Two photon beams, one for excitation and one for ionization, impinge upon an atomic beam and produce ions at the point of intersection. The relative cross section is determined from a knowledge of the ion count rate and the relative photon flux of the ionization light. The results are normalized to available theoretical calculations and compared with recombination measurements in cesium plasmas. The present cross sections are found to decrease with …

"Methyliminodiacetic acid (MIDA) is oxidized with cerium. (IV) in both perchloric and sulfuric acids to give sarcosine, formaldehyde, and carbon dioxide"--Abstract, page 2.

A Study Of The Kinetic And Thermodynamic Properties Of Carbon Acids In Methanol, Dennis L. Filger Jan 1974

A Study Of The Kinetic And Thermodynamic Properties Of Carbon Acids In Methanol, Dennis L. Filger

Doctoral Dissertations

The thermodynamic acidity (pKa) of iodoform in methanol was determined at 25°C and 35°C; the values are 18.74 and 18.05, respectively . These acidity constants were determined by a modification of the equilibrium quenching technique which involves the conversion of the conjugate base of iodoform, present at equilibrium, to the radioactively labelled acid.

The rate constants for the methoxide-catalyzed hydrogentritium exchange of chloroform, iodoform, 9-phenylfluorene and indene were determined in methanol at various temperatures. The second-order rate constants obtained from these studies were shown to be the rate constants for removal of a triton. The activation parameters (ΔH …

On Interaction In The Two-Way Aov Model Without Replication Including Power Comparisons Of Two Tests For Non-Additivity, Victor John Hegemann Jan 1974

On Interaction In The Two-Way Aov Model Without Replication Including Power Comparisons Of Two Tests For Non-Additivity, Victor John Hegemann

Doctoral Dissertations

"Data analysts have long been concerned with the problem of giving a complete analysis of the two-way crossed classification design with one observation per cell when interaction is present in the data. Conventional tests of hypotheses and statistical inferences are not applicable in this case since an estimate of the error variance is not available. Transformation of the data to additive data has been one solution to this problem; however, interpretation of the physical units of the transformed data is difficult. Recent contributions to the analysis of this design include a test for interaction, a test for testing differences in …

Metal Salt Catalyzed Carbenoids Ii, Robert Stephen Mcdaniel Jr. Jan 1974

Metal Salt Catalyzed Carbenoids Ii, Robert Stephen Mcdaniel Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

"The interaction of diazomalonic esters with olefins in the presence of homogeneous Cu(II) catalyst species has been examined relating to olefin structure effects and catalyst structure effects using partial rate data as a method of determining the mechanistic aspects of the various reactions.

It has been possible to examine the mechanistic details of cyclopropanation, C-H insertion, and both "dimer" forming reactions.

Cyclopropanation proceeds via a transition state including olefin, copper (II), ligands, and carbene C-H insertion results from hydrogen abstraction prior to collapse of the transition state. "Dimer" is formed by the attack of diazo compound on the carbenoid carbon, …

Base-Induced Reactions Of P-Nitrobenzyl Compounds, Paul Henry Ruehle Jan 1974

Base-Induced Reactions Of P-Nitrobenzyl Compounds, Paul Henry Ruehle

Doctoral Dissertations

"The base-induced reactions of several p-nitrobenzyl compounds were studied. The products varied with changes in the leaving groups. With relatively poor leaving groups (Cl, S⁺(Me)₂), p,p'- dinitrostilbene was produced in good yield. The products of the reaction of p-nitrobenzyl chloride and hydroxide ion in 50% aqueous dioxane were 52.0% p,p'-dinitrostilbene, 43.9% cis- and trans-p,p'-dinitrostilbene oxides, 3.2% p-nitrobenzyl alcohol, and traces of other compounds. With dissolved oxygen, no stilbene was produced; the main product was 88% cis- and trans-p,p'-dinitrostilbene oxides. The addition of small amounts of di-t-butyl nitroxide caused a decrease in both the rate of the reaction and the amount …

Methods And Applications Of The Mean-Variance Portfolio Selection Model, John W. Marsh Jan 1974

Methods And Applications Of The Mean-Variance Portfolio Selection Model, John W. Marsh

Doctoral Dissertations

"The Mean-Variance portfolio selection model, or Efficient Market model, is examined in terms of the small investor. The performance is first tested on the small sample space of the thirty Dow Jones Industrials. The results show that it is possible to outperform the market by investing in the minimum-variance, or safest, portfolio. The Critical-Line algorithm as developed by Markowitz and modified by Sharpe is used in this analysis.

Since the Critical-Line algorithm is very time-consuming and does not always converge to a solution, an alternate algorithm is developed. This algorithm, referred to as the “Simplified Algorithm”, is designed to find …

Surface Electromagnetic Waves With Damping I. Isotropic Media Ii. Anisotropic Media, Gary Shannon Kovener Jan 1974

Surface Electromagnetic Waves With Damping I. Isotropic Media Ii. Anisotropic Media, Gary Shannon Kovener

Doctoral Dissertations

Paper 1: “Surface electromagnetic wave (SEW) dispersion curves are usually calculated using a simple equation derived from Maxwell’s equations and boundary conditions. When complex dielectric functions are used for the two media, the component of the propagation vector along the surface kx becomes infinite as the frequency ω approaches the surface polariton frequency ωs if ω is considered complex and kx real. On the other hand, if kx is considered complex and ω real, the dispersion curves bend back toward smaller kx as ω approaches ωs. We have previously demonstrated that both types …

Ionization Of Carbon And Nitrogen In The Intercloud Medium, Menas Kafatos, H. Gerola, S. Hatchett, R. Mccray Jan 1974

Ionization Of Carbon And Nitrogen In The Intercloud Medium, Menas Kafatos, H. Gerola, S. Hatchett, R. Mccray

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

If the intercloud medium in the solar neighborhood was suddenly ionized less than 106 years ago, the subsequent relaxation of the gas can account for the very low observed column density of C III and N III yet still leave a significant fraction ("'0.05) of ionized hydrogen and of C I in a cold (T ≈ 20° K) intercloud medium. The OAO-C Copernicus observations in the direction of X Sco are consistent with cosmic abundances and a uniform-density medium, except for C III whose predicted column density from the C m ionization zone surrounding the star is a factor ~1Q …

Statistical Time-Dependent Model For The Interstellar Gas, H. Gerola, Menas Kafatos, R. Mccray Jan 1974

Statistical Time-Dependent Model For The Interstellar Gas, H. Gerola, Menas Kafatos, R. Mccray

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We present models for temperature and ionization structure of low, uniform-density (n ~ 0.3 cm^-3) interstellar gas in a galactic disk which is exposed to soft X-rays from supernova outbursts occurring randomly in space and time. The structure was calculated by computing the time record of temperature and ionization at a given point by Monte Carlo simulation. The calculation yields probability distribution functions for ionized fraction x, temperature T, and their various observable moments. These time-dependent models predict a bimodal temperature distribution of the gas with structure in x, T that agrees with various observations. Cold regions in the low-density …

The Gulf-Atlantic Waterway: Instrument To Increase Profit Margins In The Jacksonville Area, Jacksonville Area Chamber Of Commerce Research Department, Jay A. Smith Jan 1974

The Gulf-Atlantic Waterway: Instrument To Increase Profit Margins In The Jacksonville Area, Jacksonville Area Chamber Of Commerce Research Department, Jay A. Smith

Waterways and wildlife

The purpose of this report is to reassess the economic value that the Gulf-Atlantic Waterway will have on Duval county. This will show the direct relationship on the Port and the indirect benefits to other segments in our economy. This is needed for three reasons: 1. The last economic study was completed by the Corps of Engineers with the assistance of Arthur D. Little, Inc., a national consulting firm, in 1962. So, it has been almost twelve years since an economic report has been started from scratch. 2. The economic reports in the past have been mainly concerned with cost/benefit, …

Benthic Infaunal Community Formation In Dredged Areas In Hampton Roads, Virginia, Thomas Karl Duncan Jan 1974

Benthic Infaunal Community Formation In Dredged Areas In Hampton Roads, Virginia, Thomas Karl Duncan

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The macrobenthic fauna in three dredged areas in Hampton Roads, Virginia was sampled for 14 months. Repopulation occurred very rapidly after the cessation of dredging, but the dominant species were generally not those previously recorded as mud-bottom dominants in the Hampton Roads area. The faunal changes through time somewhat agreed with those reported in classical successional sequences. This dissertation is from the Joint Program Degree from the College of William & Mary and University of Virginia and awarded by the University of Virginia.

Carbon Transport In Two York River, Virginia Tidal Marshes, Kenneth Alan Moore Jan 1974

Carbon Transport In Two York River, Virginia Tidal Marshes, Kenneth Alan Moore

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Annual net transports of particulate organic carbon (POC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and ATP-carbon were determined for two York River, Virginia, tidal marshes by monthly sampling for one year. Annual net losses of POC, DOC, and ATP-carbon from the marsh to the York River were observed for both areas, indicating that the long-term effect of these marshlands is to contribute both living and detrital organic material to the estuary. The mesohaline marsh area, Carter Creek, was observed to have the greater amount of organic carbon loss in the particulate fraction, while the oligohaline marsh area, Ware Creek, was observed to …

Heavy Metal Concentrations In The Clam Rangia Cuneata From The Rappahannock And James Rivers, Robert Emile Croonenberghs Jan 1974

Heavy Metal Concentrations In The Clam Rangia Cuneata From The Rappahannock And James Rivers, Robert Emile Croonenberghs

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This project investigated the feasibility of using the brackish water clam Rangia cuneata as a heavy metal pollution indicator, and further investigated the state of heavy metal pollution in the James River. Rangia cuneata were sampled in the fall of 1972 from the Rappahannock and James Rivers , and meats were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry for wet weight concentrations of copper, zinc, cadmium and lead. Levels of copper and zinc in Rangia cuneata were shown to be unaffected by clam size, spawning differences, salinity or distance upriver, and substrate grain size. Heavy metal concentrations in the oxidized channel sediments, …

Mechanics Of Beach Cusp Formation, Asbury H. Sallenger Jan 1974

Mechanics Of Beach Cusp Formation, Asbury H. Sallenger

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Beach cusps are crescentic shoreline accumulations of unconsolidated sediment that are characterized by a quasi-equal longshore spacing. The processes controlling the development of the cuspate form and the spacing of cusps were investigated. Field measurements showed that the cuspate form was derived through erosion of beach ridges, The ridges oriented alongshore in the swash zone are characterized by quasi-equally spaced channels cut normal to the shoreline whose widths are much less than the channel spacing. The upwash flows up the front face of the ridge and ponds shoreward of the ridge crest. The ponded fluid returns seaward through the channels. …
