Physics

The synthetic analog approach has been applied to a clarification of the active sites of 2Fe-2S* proteins. The compound (Et4N)2[FeS(SCH2)2C6H4]2, derived from o-xylyl-α,α′-dithiol, has been prepared and its structure has been determined by x-ray diffraction. The centrosymmetric anion contains two tetrahedrally coordinated ferric ions bridged by two sulfide ions and separated by 2.70 Å. Comparison of electronic, Mössbauer, and proton magnetic resonance spectra and magnetic susceptibility of the anion with the corresponding properties of the oxidized forms of the proteins reveals …

Thermodynamic And Electrochemical Studies Of Niobium In Molten Fluorides And Chloroaluminates, Gann Ting Aug 1973

Thermodynamic And Electrochemical Studies Of Niobium In Molten Fluorides And Chloroaluminates, Gann Ting

Doctoral Dissertations

The oxide chemistry of niobium(V) has been studied in molten LiF-BeF2 mixtures. The stoichiometry of an oxygen-containing niobium(V) species (NbO2F) has been established in molten Li2BeF4 from the heterogeneous equilibrations of NiNb2o6 and NiO with the melt containing NiF2, the equilibrium quotient for the reaction was determined. The equilibrium quotient for the heterogeneous reaction of Nb2O5 and BeO with molten LiF-BeF2 mixtures (67-33 and 52-48 mole %) was also determined, and the effect of the melt composition on the solubility of Nb2O5 …

Enzyme And Tissue Alterations In Fishes: A Measure Of Water Quality, David E. Hinton, M. W. Kendall, J. C. Koenig

KWRRI Research Reports

A variety of freshwater fishes were studied by light and electron microscopy, enzyme histochemical and biochemical methods, The objective was to determine normal structure and function in specific target organs and to compare these to altered states in aquatic pollution. The basic question, "can fish tissues and enzymes serve as indicators of water quality?," was asked. Microscopic alteration in gill was indicative of copper toxicity at an exposure of 20 parts per billion, Gross and light microscopic alterations were indicative of a single exposure of channel catfish to 15 parts per million of methyl mercuric chloride (CH3HgCl). Microscopic …

Hot Electron Injection Into Dense Argon, Nitrogen, And Hydrogen, Pavel Smejtek, M. Silver, K. S. Dy, David G. Onn

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Hot electrons have been injected into very dense argon, nitrogen, and hydrogen gases and liquids. The current‐voltage characteristics are experimentally determined for densities (N) of argon, nitrogen, and hydrogen ranging from about 10²⁰ to 10²² cm⁻³ and applied fields (E) ranging from about 10 to 10⁴ V cm⁻¹. The argon data show a square root E∕N dependence of the current. The nitrogen and hydrogen data show a complicated dependence of the current on E∕N due to the rapid thermalization in the region of the image potential of the injected electrons through inelastic collision processes not present in argon. A hydrodynamic‐two‐fluid …

The Internal Chemical Shift. A Key To Bonding In Aromatic Molecules. I. Internal Shift Correlations, Donald W. Beistel, Holger E. Chen, P. J. Fryatt

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The study of proton shift behavior in nine families of disubstituted benzenes has provided quantitative correlations of internal and meta shifts among all families. The equations of correlation are useful in the prediction of shifts to an error of 0.015 ppm. The studies demonstrate shift additivity for the 4-substituted halobenzenes and suggest a chain rule relationship for substituent effects in those compounds. For that reason, previous theories of substituent interactions involving inductive and resonance contributors appear incorrect when applied to proton shift data. In decreasing order of up field shift at the ortho protons the substituents studied include N(CH3)2, NH2, …

On The Use Of Drift Bottle And Seabed Drifter Data In Coastal Management, Christopher S. Welch, John J. Norcross Aug 1973

On The Use Of Drift Bottle And Seabed Drifter Data In Coastal Management, Christopher S. Welch, John J. Norcross

Reports

The use of drift bottle and seabed drifter information for use in coastal management is discussed. The drift bottle/seabed drifter portion of VIMS project MACONS (Mid Atlantic Continental Shelf) is described as an example of how a comprehensive survey using drift bottles and seabed drifters provides data useful for coastal management. The data from MACONS are analyzed to answer specific questions of interest to several different coastal managers: a manager siting a deep oil port, one siting a sewage outfall, a manager responsible for setting up emergency beach protection procedures before an accident occurs, and a manager responsible for the …

Comment On "Length And Velocity Formulas In Approximate Oscillator-Strength Calculations", Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

A previous paper by Starace showed that the length formula for the electric-dipole matrix element is the only consistent one for calculations that solve for the exact eigenfunctions of an approximate Hamiltonian containing a nonlocal potential. It is emphasized here that disagreement between such a length-formula calculation and experiment indicates inadequacy of the approximate Hamiltonian and not that the velocity formula may be preferable.

State Of Bacterial Dna After Uptake Into The Roots Of Germinating Barley Seeds, Larry Dale Lawson Aug 1973

State Of Bacterial Dna After Uptake Into The Roots Of Germinating Barley Seeds, Larry Dale Lawson

Theses and Dissertations

Germinating barley seeds have been shown to take up Bacillus subtilis DNA labelled with 5-bromouracil and tritiated thymidine and retain the DNA in the root system without substantially degrading it. The percentage of bacterial DNA recovered from the total root DNA was independent of the amount of bacterial DNA available for uptake. Four observations indicated the stability of bacterial DNA after uptake into barley roots: (1) the bacterial DNA retained its transforming ability after recovery from the roots; (2) the labelled B. subtilis DNA showed similar CsCl density gradient patterns before uptake and after uptake; (3) most of the radioactivity …

I. An Isothermal Titration Microcalorimeter. Ii. Importance Of Micronutrients In Nutrition. Iii. Zinc Bibliography, John Willard Gardner

Theses and Dissertations

I. An isothermal titration microcalorimeter having a colume of 4 ml and capable of temerature control to ±2 x 10-5°C is described. Major components include a constant temperature water bath controlled to ±3 x 10-4°C, a platinum reation vessel, and an isothermal control circuit consisting of constant Peltier thermoelectric cooling and variable Joule heating controlled by a thermistor in an AC Wheatstone bridge circuit. The calorimeter was tested by measuring the heat of ionization of water and was found to produce data accurate to ± 0.1% where small samples are used such as in the investigation of many biological systems.

The Intensity Of Ligand Absorption, Shing-Bong Chen Aug 1973

The Intensity Of Ligand Absorption, Shing-Bong Chen

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The ultraviolet absorption spectra of a number of aryl phosphines and amines and transition metal complexes of triphenylphosphine have been determined. These data indicate that the intensity of the Õ* ¬ Õ phenyl ring transition is not only sensitive to the central atom attached to the ring but is also affected by the metal ion in the complex. Since the degree of covalency depends on the degree of back donation, the oxidation state of the metal ion was found to be the most important factor in determining the intensity of the absorption. The more covalent the metal-phosphine bond, the lower …

Separation Of Copper (Ii) And Silver (I) By Differential Rates Of Extraction & Extraction Rate Studies Of Copper(Ii), Jon Hines Aug 1973

Separation Of Copper (Ii) And Silver (I) By Differential Rates Of Extraction & Extraction Rate Studies Of Copper(Ii), Jon Hines

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

It was the purpose of this work to study the extraction of Cu(II) and Ag(I) with dithizone in chloroform. This particular pair of elements was chosen for study for several reasons. The most prominent of these reasons is that these two elements are found together in nature and are often found combined in manufactured products. Being in the same periodic group, they exhibit similar chemical characteristics making them difficult to separate without special procedures. These similar chemical characteristics make the analysis of these elements difficult when in the presence of each other. Finally, it is of importance that both elements …

Electron Transfer Rate Between Cobalt(Ii)-Cobalt(Iii) Polypyridyl Complexes In Nonaqueous Solvents, William Prow Aug 1973

Electron Transfer Rate Between Cobalt(Ii)-Cobalt(Iii) Polypyridyl Complexes In Nonaqueous Solvents, William Prow

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Numerous studies have been made in recent years on electron transfer reactions of transition metal complexes which proceed by either an inner- or an outer-sphere mechanism. However, except for the Fe(II)/ Fe(III) isotopic electron exchange system, few of the studies have been conducted in other than aqueous media. This study was undertaken to examine solvent effects on redox reactions of transition metal complexes which proceed by an outer-sphere mechanism.

During this study, the electron exchange rate between the bis(2,2',2"-tripyridyl)cobalt(II) complex and the tris(2,2'-dipyridyl) cobalt(III) complex was measured in a number of nonaqueous solvents. Rate measurements were made at three or …

Linear Operators Between Nonarchimedean Banach Spaces, Krishnamachari S. Nadathur Aug 1973

Linear Operators Between Nonarchimedean Banach Spaces, Krishnamachari S. Nadathur

Dissertations

I Preliminaries

The purpose of this dissertation is to extend some classical results on compact and Fredholm operators to the case in which the linear spaces involved are non-archimedean normed linear spaces over a valued field.

In Section I are listed some definitions and basic concepts that are needed for a study of non-archimedean valuation theory. The concepts of tensor products of nonarchimedean Banach spaces over a spherically complete field F, and of the tensor product of operators, are also dealt with in this section.

The proofs of most of the results in Section II are based on the known …

Study Of Dynamic Programming And Gambling Systems., N. D. Prabhakar Dr. Jul 1973

Study Of Dynamic Programming And Gambling Systems., N. D. Prabhakar Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The body of methods known as Dynamic Programming (d.p.) was developed by Bellman and was successfully applied by him to solve practical problems in diverse fields (see 12] and the pa pers cited there.). These methods revolved around an intuitively appealing principle which Bellman called the principle of optimatity. A general formulation of d.p. problem was given by Blackwell (3, s] which is narrower in scope than Bollman's but includes many important applications i12) and offers a proper framework for asking the many inte- resting and mathematically sophisticated questions that arise in d.p.. Strauch, Brown, Maitra, Furukawa, Dantas, Hinderer etc., …
