Raman Spectrum Of Gadolinium Molybdate Above And Below The Ferroelectric Transition, Frank Ullman, B. J. Holden, B. N. Ganguly, John R. Hardy

John R. Hardy Papers

90 °-scattered Raman spectra of single-domain gadolinium molybdate have been obtained at room temperature and above the 159 °C ferroelectric transition on several crystal orientations. Lines in the 0-200-cm-1 range can all be associated with Raman-active phonons and are identified by symmetry considerations, scattering-efficiency calculations, and comparison of spectra for different crystal orientations. Lines in the 200-1000-cm-1 range can be identified with coupled vibrations of tetrahedral molybdate ions. Spectra for frequencies above 1000 cm-1 originate from impurity flourescence. The effect of the presence of multiple domains on the spectra was determined; the observed differences between single-domain and …

On The Reactions Of N2 With O, John B. Delos Sep 1973

On The Reactions Of N2 With O, John B. Delos

Arts & Sciences Articles

Unimolecular decomposition of N2O, quenching of O(1D) by N2, and vibrational relaxation of N2 in the presence of O(3P) are all believed to occur by the same curve crossing mechanism. This mechanism is examined making use of a complete theory of curve crossings that we have developed earlier. Good agreement with experiment is found for the unimolecular decomposition rate. The simple curve crossing mechanism does not explain the observed O(1D) quenching rate; this rate must be due to complex formation and/or additional crossings. At high temperatures, the calculated vibrational relaxation time …

Orbital Ground State Reversal In The High‐Spin Complex Fe(Ii) (N, N′‐Dicyclohexylthiourea)6(Clo4)2, R. Latorre, C. R. Abeledo, Richard B. Frankel, J. A. Costamagna, W. M. Reiff, E. Frank Sep 1973

Orbital Ground State Reversal In The High‐Spin Complex Fe(Ii) (N, N′‐Dicyclohexylthiourea)6(Clo4)2, R. Latorre, C. R. Abeledo, Richard B. Frankel, J. A. Costamagna, W. M. Reiff, E. Frank

Physics

Mössbauer spectroscopy of iron (II)(N, N′‐Dicyclohexylthiourea)6 (ClO4)2 shows the existence of two isomers. At low temperatures (T < 200°K) a form A with quadrupole splitting ΔE = 3.31 mm∕sec is stable. At and above room temperature a form B with ΔE = 1.32 mm∕sec is stable. For 200 °K < T < 300°K both forms are observed with the BA ratio increasing with increasing temperature. The values of ΔE are typical of Fe2+ with an orbital singlet and an orbital doublet ground state for A and B, respectively. The isomer shift and magnetic susceptibility results indicate that both …

An Indo Investigation Of The Structure And Bonding Of Acetylacetone And Trifluoroacetylacetone, Mark S. Gordon, Robert D. Koob Sep 1973

An Indo Investigation Of The Structure And Bonding Of Acetylacetone And Trifluoroacetylacetone, Mark S. Gordon, Robert D. Koob

Mark S. Gordon

The energies of the enol forms of acetylacetone (ACAC) and trifluoroacetylacetone (TFA) have been minimized with respect to all structural parameters using the INDO molecular orbital theory. The internal hydrogen for enol ACAC is found to be symmetrically arranged between the two oxygens with an OHO angle of 152 o and an OH bond length of 1.174 A. Fluorine substitution to produce the electronically asymmetric molecule TFA causes only a slight asymmetry in the position of the internally bonded hydrogen. In both molecules this hydrogen is located in a well-defined single potential energy minimum. Electron density is increased on the …

Seasonal Climatic Fluctuations On Baffin Island During The Period Of Instrumental Records, Raymond S. Bradley Sep 1973

Seasonal Climatic Fluctuations On Baffin Island During The Period Of Instrumental Records, Raymond S. Bradley

Raymond S Bradley

Temperature and precipitation records for Baffin Island are examined on a seasonal basis for the last 40 to 50 years. Accumulation season temperatures (September to May) during the late 1960s were similar to those which prevailed 30 to 40 years ago. Ablation season temperatures (June, July, August) during the same period were cooler than for at least 30 years. Precipitation variations showed much less spatial coherence, but during the last 10 to 15 years there have been marked increases, mostly during winter months. These increases, accompanied by cooler summers and warmer winters, have led to increased glacierization of the area. …

Case Studies In Systems Chemistry, George Fleck Sep 1973

Case Studies In Systems Chemistry, George Fleck

Open Educational Resources: Textbooks

This publication was produced as a teaching tool for college chemistry. The book is a text for a computer-based unit on the chemistry of acid-base titrations, and is designed for use with FORTRAN or BASIC.computer systems, and with a programmable electronic calculator, in a variety of educational settings. The text attempts to present computer programs that are relatively free of reliance on specialized large computer systems programs. The case-study approach presented is highly research and laboratory oriented. Similar subject matter is conventionally taught in most introductory college chemistry courses, but this text material attempts greater depth of instruction through utilization of …

Recovering Individual Data In The Presence Of Group And Individual Effects, Gudmund R. Iversen Sep 1973

Recovering Individual Data In The Presence Of Group And Individual Effects, Gudmund R. Iversen

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

The ecological fallacy of relating variables on the group level, when the individual-level relationship is desired, can only be avoided by using individual-level data. This paper gives some conditions for occasions when individual-level data can successfully be recovered from grouped data. Such a recovery is illustrated using data on urban or rural residence and participation or not in the labor force as an example. The conditions are given in terms of the distinction between individual-and group-level effects of one variable on another. Recovering individual data, on the one hand, and the study of individual and group-level effects, on the other …

Lattice Dynamics Of A Rigid-Ion Model For Gadolinium Molybdate, L. L. Boyer, John R. Hardy Sep 1973

Lattice Dynamics Of A Rigid-Ion Model For Gadolinium Molybdate, L. L. Boyer, John R. Hardy

John R. Hardy Papers

Results of lattice-dynamical calculations are presented which support the view that the ferroelectric phase transition in gadolinium molybdate (GMO) arises from the softening and ultimate instability of a doubly degenerate zone-edge mode of the high-temperature paraelectric phase. We have used a rigid-ion model in which the short-range force constants are obtained from a detailed knowledge of the crystal structure together with the conditions imposed by the requirement that the crystal must be in static equilibrium under the combined influence of both Coulomb and short-range forces. Our results show that this type of approach is very useful when one is dealing …

Magnetic Interactions And High-Field Magnetization In Dilute Magnetic Alloys , J.M. Franz, David J. Sellmyer Sep 1973

Magnetic Interactions And High-Field Magnetization In Dilute Magnetic Alloys , J.M. Franz, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

Magnetic interactions have been investigated in Cu(Mn) and Cu(Fe) alloys with concentrations ranging from several hundred to several thousand ppm. In each system two sets of alloys were prepared in different ways to test for sensitivity to structrual modifications. In the Cu(Mn) alloys there was very little difference in magnetic properties of the two sets of alloys which is consistent with the expectation that the Cu(Mn) alloys form good random solid solutions. The magnetic properties were compared with the recent mean-random-field theory of Klein in the low-temperature limit. It was found that the theory is able to explain the concentration …

Minimum Cost Design Of Water Distribution Systems, Don J. Wood, C. O. Charles Sep 1973

Minimum Cost Design Of Water Distribution Systems, Don J. Wood, C. O. Charles

KWRRI Research Reports

The objective of this study was to develop the analytical tools and procedures for minimum cost design of water distribution systems. Both analog and digital means of carrying out pressure and flow calculations were developed. As a result of this effort, digital programs for pressure and flow calculations in water distribution systems were written and have been widely distributed to practicing engineers. One procedure is based on a direct solution of the basic system equations using a linearization scheme and has several advantages over conventional techniques such as the Hardy Cross method. These include avoiding the need to initially balance …
