A General Lr(K) Parser Building Algorithm, Thomas Joshua Sager
A General Lr(K) Parser Building Algorithm, Thomas Joshua Sager
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
The problem is to find an efficient algorithm that, given the productions of a context-free grammar G, will discover whether G is LR(k) for given k and if it is build an efficient parser for G . The algorithm is given in Section 8. It is essentially a synthesis of the best parts of Knuth's and DeRemer's algorithms. On simple LR(k) grarranars it yields a result equivalent to DeRemer's algorithm, and like Knuth's algorithm it will work on all LR(k) grammars.
The Synthesis Of Pyrimidines And Condensed Pyridazines As Potential Antimetabolites, Judith A. Wagner
The Synthesis Of Pyrimidines And Condensed Pyridazines As Potential Antimetabolites, Judith A. Wagner
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
Interest in the compounds described by this thesis was first aroused in the early 1930's when a research team began to investigate the mass poisonings of the population in Indonesia. The cause of the poisonings seemed to be the foodstuffs which the people made for themselves from the abundant coconut. Two products in particular, Bongkrek and Semaji, made from coconut presscakes and grated coconut, were apparently the source of the toxic substance. When made under improper conditions, the toxic principle developed in an otherwise harmless food product. A compound was finally isolated and established as the toxic principle by …

Quasi-Landau Spectrum Of A Hydrogen Like Atom In A High Magnetic Field, Anthony F. Starace
Quasi-Landau Spectrum Of A Hydrogen Like Atom In A High Magnetic Field, Anthony F. Starace
Anthony F. Starace Publications
A two dimensional semiclassical approximation is used to examine the σ polarization spectrum of a hydrogen like atom in a strong magnetic field. Resonances above the zero field ionization limit are found and their energy separations are computed over the region from the ionization limit to 40 ħωc above, where ωc is the cyclotron frequency, for magnetic fields of 10, 17, 25, 32, 40 and 47 kG. At the ionization limit the separation between resonances is found to be 1.500 ħωc, independent of magnetic field strength, which is in agreement with a separation of 1.5 ħω …
A Study Of Trace Metal Concentrations In Two Species Of Mytilus Along The Pacific Coast Of The United States., George Harry Fullas
A Study Of Trace Metal Concentrations In Two Species Of Mytilus Along The Pacific Coast Of The United States., George Harry Fullas
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
An investigation of iron, zinc, copper, and cadmium concentrations in Mytilus californianus and Mytilus edulis was conducted on specimens collected along the west coast of the United States. Animals and sea water were collected at six different areas and analyzed using an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. Trace metal concentrations in the animals were influenced by the collection conditions of age, species, temperature, pollution, and metal relationships. Younger animals, of both species, contained higher concentrations of all the metals. Larger, or older animals, contained the smallest metal concentrations. Copper concentrations in the animals were higher in sea water with high copper content. …
Solid Waste Disposal And Ocean Dumping, John William Sellers
Solid Waste Disposal And Ocean Dumping, John William Sellers
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
A broad-scope overview of the solid waste disposal problem as intensified by legislation against ocean dumping of such wastes. Since the problem of increasing ocean pollution was partly solved by extensive restrictions on ocean dumping, wastes formerly disposed of in the oceans must now be disposed of by other methods. These alternative methods are discussed and cost estimates applied insofar as feasible; effects on the environment and on the conservation of natural resources are also discussed. Efforts should be directed to determine the level of solid waste disposal which would result in beneficial effects, or at the worst, in non-harmful …

A Field Study Of Selected Ecological Properties Of Boca Ciega Bay And Adjacent Gulf Of Mexico, Geo-Marine, Inc.
Reports
This report describes a quantitative study of selected environmental parameters in a portion of Boca Ciega Bay and in the Gulf of Mexico adjacent to Johns Pass. The investigation included an analysis of hydrography and water quality during the period 14-20 February 1973. The objective of the study was to assess the present marine environment in order to judge the ecological feasibility of discharging tertiary treated sewage effluent into Boca Ciega Cay or secondary treated effluent into the Gulf of Mexico. The discharge would come from the proposed expansion of the South Cross Bayou sewage treatment plant.

Evaluation Of An Experiment In Computer -Assisted Tutoring, Stephen L. Cunningham, Robert Fuller
Robert G. Fuller Publications
It was made apparent from the presentations at the Conference of Computers in Undergraduate Science Education that very few Computer-Assisted Instructional (CAI) programs in physics attempt to evaluate the performance of computer- tutored students in comparison with a control group. In this note, we discuss an experiment in which 23 beginning physics students out of a class of 64 were given a computer-administered tutoring test in place of the regular review recitation session prior to an hour exam on relativity. The performance of the computer-tutored group on the exam was compared to the performance of the rest of the class.
Li-8 Magnetic Dipole-Moment, Richard C. Haskell, Leon Madansky
Li-8 Magnetic Dipole-Moment, Richard C. Haskell, Leon Madansky
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
Polarized 8Li nuclei recoiling from the reaction 7Li(d, p)8Li were implanted in Au, Pd, and Pt foils, and the Knight-shifted values of the 8Li magnetic dipole moment in these metals were measured by a resonant depolarization technique. From measurements of the spinlattice relaxation times of 8Li implanted in Au, Pd, and Pt, the Knight shifts of 8Li in these metals were estimated. A corrected value for the magnetic dipole moment of 8Li was found to be μ(8Li)=(1.653 35±0.000 35)μN. Attempts were also made to measure the quadrupole couplings of 8Li in single crystals of Be and Mg. While the resonance …

Implications Of Photogeologic Linears In The South Long Lake Area, Alpena And Presque Isle Counties, Michigan, Richard E. Kimmel
Implications Of Photogeologic Linears In The South Long Lake Area, Alpena And Presque Isle Counties, Michigan, Richard E. Kimmel
Masters Theses
There are numerous linear features in Alpena and Presque Isle Counties, Michigan, which are generally visible on aerial photographs. These photolinears trend in two general directions, northeast-southwest and northwest-southeast. These two sets are perpendicular to each other, and represent vector means of two fracture sets.
The development of the photolinears began in Early Devonian. Throughout its history, ground water flowed along underground channels connecting fracture intersections. This underground drainage network is responsible for many of the photolinears. Some of the photolinears can be attributed tb Early Devonian ground water activity and subsequent collapse of the Salina Salt basin, and some …

Investigation Of The Halocline Structure In Lower Chesapeake Bay, Samuel Bowen Heltzel
Investigation Of The Halocline Structure In Lower Chesapeake Bay, Samuel Bowen Heltzel
OES Theses and Dissertations
A portion of the Chesapeake Bay from 37°20’N latitude to the entrance was investigated to determine the halocline structure, the effects on this structure through the tidal sequence, and seasonal variations. A determination of the stage of slack water during which maximum extension of the halocline occurred was also made. This was accomplished by looking at the salinity distribution at the halocline upper limit, the mean depth to the halocline, and seasonal salinity contours drawn for tidal increments. By comparing salinity/depth gradients and salinity-depth vertical profiles, an attempt was made to relate seasonal and tidal variations to the halocline structure. …

⁷Li(D,P)⁸Li Excitation Function :|Be[Subscript D] = 0.623 Mev To 1.968 Mev, Albert E. Schilling
Theses and Dissertations
In this study the excitation function for the ^7Li(d,p)^8Li reaction is determined at incident deuteron energies ranging from 0.623MeV to 1.968MeV by counting the delayed alpha-particles as a result of the ^8Li beta decay. This excitation function reveals resonances at 0.777±0.012MeV and 1.031±0.015MeV with cross sections of 202±9mb and 188±8mb respectively. The uncertainty in the cross section values was due to three independent sources of error within this experiment, the solid angle, the ^8Li half-life, and the target (LiF) thickness. The uncertainty in the energy values was determined from an energy calibration of the accelerator used in this study. Resonances …
The Purification And Characterization Of Cytochrome B₅ From Porcine Kidney, M. Dean Klingler
The Purification And Characterization Of Cytochrome B₅ From Porcine Kidney, M. Dean Klingler
Theses and Dissertations
A soluble form of cytochrome b_5, with a 413/280 nm ratio of nearly unity, has been isolated and purified from porcine kidney using fractional precipitation, ion exchange resins, and gel filtration procedures. The cytochrome b_5 shows heat stability up to 50° and is stable in the pH range 6.0 to 8.5. The oxidized protein exhibits an absorption maximum at 413 nm, while the reduced form shows three peaks: 423, 526, 556 nm. Molecular weight determinations have given variable results, suggesting the possibility of a polymer composed of four and eight units of a 13,500 molecular weight protomer. This study has …

Theses and Dissertations
The heat of neutralization, ΔH_-N, of perchloric acid with sodium hydroxide has been determined at 10 and 40° in a low ionic strength, μ, region using a nonisothermal, constant-temperature-environment solution calorimeter. Correction of the data to infinite dilution by extrapolation of a plot of ΔH_-N vs μ^0.5 gives values at zero ionic strength for the heat of ionization of water of 14.216 and 12.695 kcal/mole, respectively, at 10 and 40° . The data are correlated with those of earlier workers to give an equation allowing the calculation of the heat of ionization of water at zero ionic strength over the …
Little Drum Mountains, An Early Tertiary Shoshonitic Volcanic Center In Millard County, Utah, Stephen H. Leedom
Little Drum Mountains, An Early Tertiary Shoshonitic Volcanic Center In Millard County, Utah, Stephen H. Leedom
Theses and Dissertations
The Little Drum Mountains represent a deeply eroded Eocene-Oligocene volcano, consisting of a vent complex which erupted mafic flows and flow breccias, accompanied by lahars. Flows are dominated by members of the shoshonite suite and contain up to 3.95 percent K2O, mainly occult in K-rich glass, with K2O/Na2O ratios greater than 1.0. In a few interbedded flows, apparently of the calc-alkaline series, pyroxene with varying amounts of plagioclase in a fine-grained groundmass of plagioclase, mafic minerals, and interstitial glass. An ash-flow tuff of the Oligocene Needles Range Formation unconformably overlies the volcanic sequence. Contemporaneous …

A Seasonal Distributional Survey Of The Epiphytic Diatoms Of The Outer Banks Region Of North Carolina With Respect To Temperature And Salinity, Charles Welles Belin Jr.
OES Theses and Dissertations
This study was initiated to investigate epiphytic diatoms at selected stations along the North Carolina coast and bay region. The relationships between these organisms and the season of the year and salinity and temperature of the water in which they were found are considered. The special affinity between the epiphytic diatoms and their host plants is also discussed. The specific data were analyzed statistically via linear correlation coefficients, graphs of least squares-best fit, and multiple linear regression analysis.
From the statistical tests, it was found that the mean number of epiphytic diatoms shows a significant multiple linear regression with respect …

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The study was designed to assess the level of anxiety experienced by chronic schizophrenic patients when two different methods of leadership were used in group therapy. A search of literature revealed suggestions for modification of leadership approach due to the tenuous anxiety tolerance of chronic schizophrenics but no studies were found directly related to the amount of anxiety resulting from different leadership approaches.
A structured group in which the leader maintained a directive role was compared with a nonstructured group in which the leader maintained a nondirective role in the group process. The randomized sample included five male and five …
Transforming Ability Of Bacillus Subtilis Dna Taken Up By Barley Embryos, Christine Tolman Ence
Transforming Ability Of Bacillus Subtilis Dna Taken Up By Barley Embryos, Christine Tolman Ence
Theses and Dissertations
Purified Bacillus subtilis DNA taken up by one-day-old barley embryos and permanently fixed within the barley cell is shown to have maintained its biological activity in B. subtilis transformation. Cesuim chloride density gradient centrifugation of DNA isolated from the roots of barley embryos after the uptake and incorporation of radioactive, bromouracil-labelled B. subtilis DNA indicates the presence of the bacterial DNA in several discreet bands of well-defined density, whose density is changed by sonication. These preliminary findings concerning the fate of bacterial DNA taken up by barley roots are discussed in terms of the recombination model of Ledoux and Huart …
Reactions Of N₂F₄ And Sf₆ With H₂ Induced By Co₂ Laser Pulses And By Electrical Discharge, John Leslie Lyman
Reactions Of N₂F₄ And Sf₆ With H₂ Induced By Co₂ Laser Pulses And By Electrical Discharge, John Leslie Lyman
Theses and Dissertations
A high power pulsed CO_2 laser was used to induce reactions in gas mixtures containing either N_2F_4 or SF_6. The rate of laser induced dissociation of N_2F_4 to NF_2 was as much as 1000 times faster than the thermal rate, and the rate law was of lower order than the thermal, bimolecular rate law. Explosion threshold and induction time data were obtained for butene stabilized mixtures of N_2F_4 and H_2. HF laser gain was observed during the first few microseconds of CO_2 laser pulse, but it was strongly quenched by the explosion. The laser driven reaction of SF_6 with H_2 …

Theses and Dissertations
The determination of total thiamin, free thiamin, thiamin di phosphate (TDP) plus thiamin triphosphate (TTP), and total α- hydroxyethylthiamin (HET) levels in rat brain in control, deficient, oxythiamin- (OTH) and pyrithiamin- (PTH) treated rats was accomplished. It was found that the TDP + TTP/thiamin ratio observed in the thiamin-deficient, OTH- and PTH-treated rats was constant and did not differ from the ratio observed in the control rat brains. The brain levels of TDP + TTP decreased to 39% and 12% of the control thiamin levels in deficient and PTH-treated rats respectively. The brain HET and TDP + TTP levels of …
Development Of Standard Procedures For Determination Of [Delta]G° (K), [Delta]H° And [Delta]S° Values Via Potentiometric And Calorimetric Titration Techniques, Jack Hugh Ruckman
Development Of Standard Procedures For Determination Of [Delta]G° (K), [Delta]H° And [Delta]S° Values Via Potentiometric And Calorimetric Titration Techniques, Jack Hugh Ruckman
Theses and Dissertations
Standard computer techniques were developed for computation of ΔG° values from potentiometric titration data and ΔH° values from calorimetric titration data. The procedures developed can be used for any systems having the general equations HA = W^+ + A^- ; H_2A = 2H^+ + A^2- ; and H_3A = 3H^+ + A^3-, where the proton ionizations may be consecutive or simultaneous. The thermodynamic values ΔG°(K), ΔH° and ΔS° were determined for the ionization of protons from the protonated compounds methionine (-NH_3^+ group only), phosphoethanalomine and phosphoserine. The compounds studied were selected because they contain one, two and three ionizable protons …

Static Equilibrium Conditions For A Rigid-Ion Crystal, L. L. Boyer, John R. Hardy
Static Equilibrium Conditions For A Rigid-Ion Crystal, L. L. Boyer, John R. Hardy
John R. Hardy Papers
The equilibrium requirements for a static ionic crystal impose a number of constraints on the short-range forces which become increasingly more important when one is dealing with complex structures. These constraints are presented and discussed for a general rigid-ion lattice, and a specific discussion is presented for the wurtzite structure.
