Determination Of The Origin Of The 10.6-Pm Absorption In C02 Laser Window Materials, John R. Hardy, B. S. Agrawal Mar 1973

Determination Of The Origin Of The 10.6-Pm Absorption In C02 Laser Window Materials, John R. Hardy, B. S. Agrawal

John R. Hardy Papers

Theoretical studies are presented which show that it should be possible to determine whether the absorption at 10.6 pm in alkali halides is due to impurities or whether it is intrinsic. These studies show that the temperature dependence of the measured absorption should be very different for intrinsic multiphonon absorption as compared with defect-activated absorption.

Sensitivity Of Vertebrate Embryos To Heavy Metals As A Criterion Of Water Quality, Wesley J. Birge, John J. Just

KWRRI Research Reports

Embryonic and/or larval stages of the leopard frog (Rana pipiens), domestic fowl (Gallus domesticus) and the goldfish (Carassiua auratus) were treated with cadmium chloride, mercuric chloride, lead chloride, zinc chloride and sodium arsenite. The principal objectives were (1) to determine the sensitivity of vertebrate embryos to certain metals which are of consequence in water pollution, and (2) to ascertain the suitalility of vertebrate embryos as bioassay organisms for monitoring metallic pollutants within water resources. Vertebrate embryos are found to be highly sensitive to the toxic effects of all the metals studied. Concentrations of mercury as low as 10 ppb, with …

The Effect Of A Training Program On Job Satisfaction Among Hospital Dietary Supportive Personnel, Alice E. Calkins Mar 1973

The Effect Of A Training Program On Job Satisfaction Among Hospital Dietary Supportive Personnel, Alice E. Calkins

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Steadily rising labor costs are forcing health-care institutions to give increased attention to meeting manpower needs. Dietary service management is recognizing the need for employees to be satisfied with their work, as well as the difficulty of providing adequate training for each employee. A study of the effect of a training program on job satisfaction should provide information relevant to more effective planning for the training and development of human resources within the hospital dietary service.

The purpose of this research was to determine the level of job satisfaction among hospital dietary supportive personnel; relate it to such factors as …

Maximal And Minimal Topologies., Asit Baran Raha Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Given a topological property Ï€ and a pon-void set X, let Ï€(X) denote the set of topologies on X with property Ï€. 7 (X) is obviously partially ordered by inclusion, A topologi- cal space (X,T) is minimal if T is a minimal element in T (X). (X, T) is said to be maximal Ï€ if T1 1s a maximalelement in Ï€(X), The study of maximal and minimal topological space is, as a matter of fact, a study of maximal Ï€ and minimal Ï€ spaces. Topological spaces closely related to minimal T sp aces are T-closed and KatetoV T spaces, (X,T) …

Contributions To Methodology Of Construction Of Consistent Index Number., Dodla Sai Prasada Rao Dr.

Doctoral Theses

International variation in national product is a subject of considerable interest, and any meaningful comparison of national product or per capita national income has to be in termo of a common currency. An intertemporal comparison for the same country at two points of time is mote meaningful in real terms, or in other words when the currency unit is adjusted for change in the general price level between the two points of time. In the same manner, the level of output or of consumption of a group of persons belonging to a region or to a particular socio-economio group can …

Studies In Boolean Algebras And Measure Theory., K. P. S. Bhaskara Rao Dr.

Doctoral Theses

This Thesis is divided into six chapters the first three chapters constituting studies in Boolean algebras and the last three chapters constituting studies in measure theory. We give below a sketch of the main problems treated in this Thesis.A De composition theorem due to Sobczyk and Hammer (28] implies that strongly continuous charges on Boolean algebras play a role similar to that of nonatomic measures on Boolean g-algebras. CHAPTER 1. Rudin [25] and Knowles [14] gave necessary and sufficient conditions for the Boral o-ficld of a compact Hausdorff space to admit a nonatomic measure. But there are no necessary and …

The Characteristics And Genesis Of Stone Stripes In North Central Oregon, John Baine Pyrch Feb 1973

The Characteristics And Genesis Of Stone Stripes In North Central Oregon, John Baine Pyrch

Dissertations and Theses

Stone stripes are linear accumulations of rock debris separated by finer material and oriented down the steepest available slope. In north central Oregon, the stone stripes are composed of basalt fragments and occur where the soil mantle averages less than 1 m in depth. They are best developed in areas of higher elevation, usually from about 900 to 1100 m, and are most prominent on convex to straight slopes of 15 to 30 degrees. The stripes vary from a few meters to over 150 in length, and their widths range from 0.3 to over 3 m. The depth of the …

The Photolysis Of Propane At 123.6 Nm, James H. Vorachek, Robert D. Koob Feb 1973

The Photolysis Of Propane At 123.6 Nm, James H. Vorachek, Robert D. Koob

Office of the Provost Scholarship

Propane has been photolyzed at 123.6 nm, in the presence and absence of O2, at pressures from 2–380 Torr. All products except ethane exhibit a pressure dependence which is attributed to secondary dissociation of the primary fragments, H2, CH4, C2H4, and C3H6. It is assumed that the range of energies carried by these fragments is broad enough that some will not dissociate even at low pressures while others of the same species cannot be stabilized even at high pressures. An internally consistent analysis rationalizes the entire …

An External Goniometer For Orientation Of A Cryostat, N.C. Lockhart, L.F. Nichols, Craig J. Eckhardt Feb 1973

An External Goniometer For Orientation Of A Cryostat, N.C. Lockhart, L.F. Nichols, Craig J. Eckhardt

Craig J. Eckhardt Publications

An economical two-circle orienting external goniometer has been designed and fabricated for an Andonian liquid helium Dewar. The Dewar can be tilted ±30° from the vertical in two perpendicular directions. The geometrical center of the Dewar's optical cavity moves a maximum of 1 mm when the cryostat is tilted the full 30°. The basic design involves the rotation of two concentric cylinders riding on bearing surfaces. Two chain belts and gear boxes are used as drive mechanisms.

Distorted-Wave Approximation And Its Application To The Differential And Integrated Cross Sections For Electron-Impact Excitation Of The 2¹P State Of Helium, Don H. Madison, W. Neil Shelton Feb 1973

Distorted-Wave Approximation And Its Application To The Differential And Integrated Cross Sections For Electron-Impact Excitation Of The 2¹P State Of Helium, Don H. Madison, W. Neil Shelton

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Theoretical results are given for the application of the distorted-wave approximation to electron-atom impact excitation for transitions from an L-S coupled initial state to an arbitrarily coupled final state. Expressions for the differential cross section and spin polarization of the emitted electrons are given for unpolarized electron beams incident upon unpolarized atoms. These results are applied to excitation of helium from its ground state to the 1s2p1P1 excited state for incident-electron energies between 26.5 and 300 eV. The results are compared with previous theoretical and experimental works. It is found that the distorted-wave calculation is superior to …

Spin Polarization And Differential Cross Section For Electron-Impact Excitation Of The 6s6p ¹P₁ State Of Mercury: Distorted-Wave Treatment, Don H. Madison, W. Neil Shelton

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The results of the distorted-wave theory for electron-impact excitation of atoms are applied to the excitation of the 6s6p 1P1 state of mercury. The spin polarization and the differential cross section are given for unpolarized incident electron beams with energies between 25 and 180 eV. The distorted-wave results are compared with experimental data, and good agreement is found for both the spin polarization and differential cross section.

Radiative And Predissociative Lifetimes Of The A ²Σ+ State Of Oh, Richard Orlin Sutherland, Richard A. Anderson Feb 1973

Radiative And Predissociative Lifetimes Of The A ²Σ+ State Of Oh, Richard Orlin Sutherland, Richard A. Anderson

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Lifetime measurements have been made on the A 2Σ+ state of OH by the delayed coincidence technique in conjunction with an interrupted rf discharge through water vapor. Lifetimes are reported for rotational states up to K=29 and K=20 in the ν=0 and ν=1 vibrational levels, respectively, and on the unresolved levels of ν=2. A predissociation, previously predicted from relative intensity measurements, resulting from a curve crossing by the repulsive 4Σ− state, was observed for the rotational states above K=23 of ν=0, for those above K=14 of ν=1, and for all those of ν=2. These lifetime data are discussed qualitatively in …

Absolute Line Strengths By Analysis Of Lu-Fano Plots With Application To Excited State Transitions In Neon, Anthony F. Starace Jan 1973

Absolute Line Strengths By Analysis Of Lu-Fano Plots With Application To Excited State Transitions In Neon, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Using energy eigenfunctions obtained by semi-empirical analysis of the Lu-Fano plot of energy level positions and employing the Coulomb approximation of Bates and Damgaard, we calculate absolute line strengths for transitions between the neon two-channel Rydberg series 2p5(2P3/2,1/2)ns J = 1 and 2p5 (2P3/2,1/2)n′ p J = 0 for n, n' = 3,4. Each Rydberg series is analyzed separately to obtain a set of five parameters which completely define the energy eigenfunctions for all values of n and n'. Interactions between the ns J = 1 …

A first order method is presented for solution of the initial-value problem for a differential equation of neutral type with implicit delay in the critical case where the time-lag is zero and the method of stepwise integration does not apply. A convergence theorem is proved, and numerical examples are given. © 1973, American Mathematical Society.

Energies And Z-Expansion Coefficients For The D States In The Helium Sequence, P. Blanchard, Gordon W. F. Drake Jan 1973

Energies And Z-Expansion Coefficients For The D States In The Helium Sequence, P. Blanchard, Gordon W. F. Drake

Physics Publications

Non-relativistic variational energies for the 1s3d(1,3D) states of the helium isoelectronic sequence are calculated with a 50-term correlated basis set for Z=2-10, where Z is the nuclear charge, and the corresponding Z-expansion coefficients found through sixth order by fitting the energies to a series in Z-1. A variational-perturbation calculation of these coefficients through eleventh order (with the same basis set) is presented for comparison, and agreement is satisfactory. The 3d energies obtained by summing the Z-expansion perturbation series are found to yield excellent approximations to the variational values. The calculations are extended to the 1s4d( 1,3D) states to furnish variational …

Photon-Scattering Theory Of The Quenching Of Hydrogenic Metastables, Gordon W. F. Drake, R. B. Grimley Jan 1973

Photon-Scattering Theory Of The Quenching Of Hydrogenic Metastables, Gordon W. F. Drake, R. B. Grimley

Physics Publications

The quenching of hydrogenic metastables is formulated as a near-resonant photon-scattering problem, and a complete analysis of the polarization and angular distribution of the emitted radiation is presented. The contribution from np states with n>2 is calculated, and an alternative method of measuring the Lamb shift is suggested. © 1973 The American Physical Society.

A Study Of The Dickey-Lincoln Hydroelectric Project And Its Impact On The Resources Of The Upper Saint John River Valley, Rosemary M. Manning, Sierra Club, New England Chapter

Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project

This report was under-taken primarily to evaluate the impact that the construction of the Dickey-Lincoln project would have upon the resources of the Upper St. John River, and to examine the assertion that the Dickey-Lincoln project constitutes a wise use of the public's environmental and economic resources. Since the case that has been made for the construction of the Dickey-Lincoln project rest primarily on the justification of the project in economic terms, this aspect of the project proposal will be intensively explored.

Preliminary Report Of The Oil And Gas Possibilities Between Pine And Cumberland Mountains, Southeastern Kentucky, A J. Froelich

Report of Investigations--KGS

Elongate, low-amplitude flexures in strata of Pennsylvanian age have been delineated in recent mapping by the U. S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Kentucky Geological Survey in a 600-square-mile (l ,536- square-kilometer) area between Pine and Cumberland Mountains in southeastern Kentucky. Cresta! culminations on gentle anticlinal folds may indicate loci of subsurface closures for entrapment of oil and gas. The area studied is underlain by more than 15,000 feet (4,500 meters) of Paleozoic strata containing potential source-beds, reservoirs, and cap rocks. Faults, unconformities, abrupt facies changes, and regional thickness variations enhance the geologic setting for possible oil and gas …

The Investigation Of Snowfall Rate Using Optical Techniques, Gerald J. Mulvey Jan 1973

The Investigation Of Snowfall Rate Using Optical Techniques, Gerald J. Mulvey

Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Experiments involving the attenuation of light by falling snow, or hydrometeors in general, lend themselves to the study of at least two problems of meteorological interest. The first problem is that of visibility in adverse weather conditions, and the second is that of finding a better method to measure precipitation. From the late 1940's through the late 1960's, various investigators have attempted to apply forward light scattering theory in the geometric optics range (α ≥ 200, where α = (2π_r)/λ, λ=wavelength and r = radius)* to quantitatively describe the attenuation of a light beam, and thereby visibility changes due to …
