Chemical Shift Parameters For Shallow Donors In Semiconductors, Edward Boyd Hale Jan 1973

Chemical Shift Parameters For Shallow Donors In Semiconductors, Edward Boyd Hale

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A model for a shallow donor impurity in a semiconductor is used to calculate two relationships and several conditions involving the chemical shift parameters. The model is based on the standard effective mass form for the donor electron wave function, the existence of a potential in the chemical cell which may be real, pseudo, or rather general in nature, and a few somewhat restrictive approximations. The parameters, Δ, δ and Λ are theoretically calculated and are shown to be related if the approximations are valid. These parameters determine the 1S multiplet level structure and it is shown how properties of …

Branchiobdellids (Annelida: Clitellata) From Some Eastern North American Caves, With Descriptions Of New Species Of The Genus Cambarincola, Perry C. Holt Jan 1973

Branchiobdellids (Annelida: Clitellata) From Some Eastern North American Caves, With Descriptions Of New Species Of The Genus Cambarincola, Perry C. Holt

International Journal of Speleology

Branchiobdellids are found as epizoites on crustaceans of the orders Isopoda and Decapoda (cambarine crayfishes) in caves of eastern North America. Species that may be considered as troglobites, since they are not known from epigean waters, appear to be confirmed to truly troglobitic isopods and possibly a few troglobitic crayfishes from Florida and the Tennessee-Kentucky Highland Rim cave belt. The majority of the records of branchiobdellids from caves are of representatives of common epigean forms epizootic un crayfishes. Cross-referenced lists of branchiobdellids, their hosts and cave localities are presented. Some of the new species described are apparently troglobitic or troglophilic, …

Imbedding Problems In Graph Theory, William Goodwin Jan 1973

Imbedding Problems In Graph Theory, William Goodwin

Honors Theses

For some years there has been interest among mathematicians in determining the different ways in which certain graphs can be imbedded in given surfaces. M.P. VanStraten in 1948, determined that it is possible to imbed the graph K3,3 (which is the graph representing the famous three houses, three utilities problem) in the torus in only two ways. She then used this fact to show that the graph representing the configuration of Desargues (containing K3,3 as a subgraph) has genus two. One major source of motivation for the work on imbedding problems has been their relation to coloring problems …

Adsorption Of Water On Gold, Jean-Marc Louis Deschanel Jan 1973

Adsorption Of Water On Gold, Jean-Marc Louis Deschanel

Masters Theses

"Water adsorption isotherms on gold films were measured with a quartz crystal microbalance. Two gold films were studied: a "dirty" gold film contaminated by approximately one monolayer of carbon, and a "clean" gold film prepared by evaporating gold from a heated tungsten wire under high vacuum.

Water was found to chemisorb on both films according to a Freundlich type adsorption isotherm. Isosteric heats of adsorption were computed from the isotherm data. On the "clean" gold surface the isosteric heat showed a logarithmic decrease with increasing water coverage. The highest measured value for the heat of adsorption was 35 kcal mole …

Heavy Metal Analysis Of Stream Sediments In The James River Basin, Missouri, William J. Head Jan 1973

Heavy Metal Analysis Of Stream Sediments In The James River Basin, Missouri, William J. Head

Masters Theses

"A reconnaissance survey of stream sediments using the minus 80 mesh sieve fraction was made at 53 sites throughout the James River basin, Missouri. Sample sites within the 1460 square miles of the basin were chosen at tributary confluences, suspected contamination sources, and known areas of mineralization. Replicates and stream profiles were taken to check for analytical variation and reproducibility of results. Sediment samples were prepared by a hot nitric acid leach method. The sediments were analyzed using an atomic absorption unit to determine Cu, Pb, Zn, and Cd trace metal contents.

Values of selected streams within the basin were …

Heavy Metals In The Main Streams Of The James River Basin, Missouri, Richard Jerome Lance Jan 1973

Heavy Metals In The Main Streams Of The James River Basin, Missouri, Richard Jerome Lance

Masters Theses

"Demands on water resources in the James River basin have greatly increased. Industrial plants and lead-zinc prospects in the basin are potential sources of heavy metal additions to the waters of the area. The study determines the heavy metal content and distribution in the streams of the basin.

Approximately 50 water samples were collected each season and analyzed by atomic absorption techniques. Field determinations of temperature, specific conductance, pH, and effective alkalinity were also made.

Ranges of heavy metal content were: (1) mercury- <0. 1 to 0.3 ppb (summer only); (2) zinc-

The urban areas of Springfield contribute dissolved heavy metals to the surface streams. The Southwest Springfield Sewage …

Regional Hydrothermal Alteration Of The Leadville Limestone (Mississippian) Of Central Colorado, L. V. Benson Jan 1973

Regional Hydrothermal Alteration Of The Leadville Limestone (Mississippian) Of Central Colorado, L. V. Benson

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Massive metallic-sulfide deposits were implaced in the Leadville Limestone {Mississippian) of Central Colorado less than 70 million years ago. The thermal fluids which precipitated ore at Gilman, Colorado have regionally altered the Leadville Limestone. The sequence of alteration began with the recrystallization of limestone to a dark medium~grained dolomite containing a homogeneous distribution of Fe. This Was followed by partial recrystallization of the medium-grained dolomite to coarse-clear dolomite which contains an inhomogeneous distribution of Fe. The resulting banded rock is known as "zebra rock" . Precipitation of Si0 2 (jasperoid) occurred next. The jaspe=oid formed prior to the deposition of …

Seismicity Preceding Moderate Earthquakes In California, Robert L. Wesson, William L. Ellsworth

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Regional seismicity data have been examined to determine the nature of seismicity in the years preceding these moderate earthquakes in California: 1952 Kern County (M = 7.7), 1963 Watsonville (M = 5.4), 1964 and 1967 Corralitos (M = 5.0, 5.3), 1966 Parkfield-Cholame (M = 5.1, 5.5), 1968 Borrego Mountain (M = 6.4), 1969 Santa Rosa (M = 5.6, 5.7), and 1971 San Fernando (M = 6.4). In each instance the moderate earthquakes occurred in areas characterized by a relatively high level of small earthquake activity. In most cases the preceding activity in the area immediately surrounding the epicenter was high …

Production And Decay Of Double L Vacancies In Argon And Phosphorus, M. Eugene Rudd, B. Fastrup, P. Dahl, F. D. Schowengerdt Jan 1973

Production And Decay Of Double L Vacancies In Argon And Phosphorus, M. Eugene Rudd, B. Fastrup, P. Dahl, F. D. Schowengerdt

M. Eugene Rudd Publications

Measurements have been made at two laboratories which indicate that the structure reported at 450-550eV in the electron spectrum from Ar+-Ar collisions by Ogurtsov, Flaks, and Avakyan is spurious. It is argued that the double L vacancies which they invoke to explain the structure are more likely to decay by the two-step Auger process L 2→LM2→M4 than by the one-step process L2→M3 suggested by these authors. Evidence supporting this is found in our electron spectra from P+-Ar collisions, where it is known from energy-loss and charge-state measurements that double …

M. Eugene Rudd Publications

Presented here are experimental results of a study of the systematics of electron emission from discrete states of He and He- as produced by H+, H2+, He+, and He impacts. The results were obtained by energy analysis of the electrons emitted at angles of 10° to 160°. Projectile energies ranged from 20 to 150 keV. Differential and integrated cross sections are presented for emission of electrons from the 2s2 (1S), 2s2p(3P), the sum of the 2p2 (1D) and 2s2p(1P) autoionizing levels of He, …

Synthesis And Chemistry Of Thione-Iron Carbonyl Complexes, Albert Shil-Kwan Chan Jan 1973

Synthesis And Chemistry Of Thione-Iron Carbonyl Complexes, Albert Shil-Kwan Chan

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The first examples of sulfur-donor ligand ortho-metallated complexes were obtained in good to excellent yields by reaction of various thiobenzophenones and a thiobenzoate with diiron enneacarbonyl in benzene at room temperature. The known trinuclear complex S2Fe3(CO)9 was a by-product of these reactions, and complexes of the type (Ar2C)S2Fe2(CO)6 were formed in several instances. The structures of these complexes were established on the basis of microanalytical and spectral data as well as by reductive cleavage experiments. Oxidative or photolytic cleavage of the ortho-metallated complexes provides a convenient …

A Novel Method Of Constructing Sorting Networks, Robert M. Keller Jan 1973

A Novel Method Of Constructing Sorting Networks, Robert M. Keller

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

The construction of sorting networks has been a topic of much recent discussion. In view of the apparent difficulty of verifying whether a reasonably large proposed sorting network actually does sort, the most useful approach for constructing large networks seems to be to devise a recursive scheme which constructs a network which is guaranteed to sort, obviating the verification phase. In this note, another such approach is presented.

Canonical Analysis Of Several Sets Of Variables, Chong S. Kim Jan 1973

Canonical Analysis Of Several Sets Of Variables, Chong S. Kim

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Many procedures have been proposed for analyzing and describing multivariate dependence structure.

Partial correlation, multiple correlation, canonical correlation, principal component and factor analysis are used to analyze the dependence structures of a multinormal population.

For a partial correlation analysis it is necessary to decide which variables are to be correlated and which of the remaining variables must be held constant.

Multiple correlation demands that one variable be dependent upon some or all of the remaining variates.

For a canonical correlation, the variables must be collected into two or more sets. The factor analysis technique is for explaining the covariances of …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

Knockout of α particles by 156-MeV protons from ⁶Li, ²⁴Mg, ²⁸Si, ⁴⁰Ca, ¹⁴⁰Ce, and ²³²Th has been used to investigate the A dependence of α clustering in nuclei. Protons and α particles were detected in coincidence under conditions of quasifree scattering. Corresponding reaction cross sections were measured. Cross sections for ²⁴Mg and ⁴⁰Ca were found to be about 2 orders of magnitude lower than for ⁶Li. The cross section for ²⁸Si was found to be about 3 times lower than that for ²⁴Mg and ⁴⁰Ca. Upper limits of the integrated cross sections for ¹⁴⁰Ce and ²³²U are still compatible with …

Chronic Toxicity Of A Copper, Cadmium And Zinc Mixture To The Fathead Minnow (Pimephales Promelas Rafinesque), John G. Eaton Jan 1973

Chronic Toxicity Of A Copper, Cadmium And Zinc Mixture To The Fathead Minnow (Pimephales Promelas Rafinesque), John G. Eaton

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Fathead minnows were exposed to a series or concentrations of a copper, cadmium and zinc mixture during a 12.5 month chronic test in water of 200 mg 1-1 total hardness. The metal concentrations in the mixture were selected on the basis of results obtained during previous chronic exposures to each of the metals individually in the same water. Strict summation of the chronic toxicities of the metals was not indicated when they were tested in combination. Toxic effects of the mixture attributable to copper appeared to be increased, but that attributable to cadmium was reduced. The effects thought to …

Chronic Effect Of Low Ph On Fathead Minnow Survival, Growth And Reproduction, Donald I. Mount Jan 1973

Chronic Effect Of Low Ph On Fathead Minnow Survival, Growth And Reproduction, Donald I. Mount

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas Rafinesque) were continuously exposed to reduced pH levels of 4.5, 5.2, 5.9, 6.6 and 7.5 (control) during a 13-month, one-generation test. Survival was not affected, even at the lowest pH tested. Fish behavior was abnormal, and fish were deformed at pH 4.5 and 5.2. Egg production and egg hatchability were reduced at pH 5.9 and lower, and all eggs were abnormal. A pH of 6.6 was marginal for vital life functions, but safe for continuous exposure. Free carbon dioxide, liberated by the addition of sulfuric acid to reduce the pH, may have had an unknown …

The Auditor And Statistical Sampling Techniques, Marilyn Metcalf Jan 1973

The Auditor And Statistical Sampling Techniques, Marilyn Metcalf

Honors Theses

"The auditor's overall objective is to determine whether the accounting process is free from material error." To complete his objective, the auditor must thoroughly analyze all aspects of the financial statements used in the accounting process in order to satisfy himself that they fairly represent the results of activity for the period under audit and of the financial position at the end of that period. If the volume of the transactions is great, time and economic factors may keep the auditor from making a 100 percent examination. Since a complete examination cannot be made, the auditor must choose a portion …

Modern Art Through Geometric Eyes, Janice M. West Jan 1973

Modern Art Through Geometric Eyes, Janice M. West

Honors Theses

When tourists--even homefolks--go through a modern art museum, many opinions are accumulated. Some people may have chills when they see a certain painting, while others get a sick feeling of dizziness when they see the same one. In fact, if there were an opinion box at the exit of an art show, I imagine you could almost accurately count the different opinions by counting the total number of people who viewed the show. Yet, there is one opinion that most 'ole foggies' (and I use the term loosely) would agree upon, and that is this: "Why that's nothing but a …

The Synthesis And Spectroscopic Properties Of Vanadium(Iii) Squarate Trihydrate, S. M. Condren, Hector O. Mcdonald

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Vanadium(III) squarate trihydrate has been prepared; and the infrared, X-ray diffraction, and electronic spectra of the complex indicate that the central metal atom is in a slightly distorted octahedral field. A thermogravimetric study has shown that the complex loses three water molecules upon heating. A hydroxy-bridged, dimeric structure has been proposed from these data. © 1973, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.
