Oyster Spatfall On Shellstrings In Virginia Rivers: 1972 Annual Summary, Virginia Institute Of Marine Science Jan 1973

Oyster Spatfall On Shellstrings In Virginia Rivers: 1972 Annual Summary, Virginia Institute Of Marine Science

Reports

Oyster setting in Virginia river systems dipped to the lowest levels on record during 1972, according to scientists at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science who regularly monitor oyster grounds for set. A heavy set occurred on the seaside of Virginia's Eastern Shore and limited setting was observed in tributary rivers of the Mobjack Bay, but elsewhere the number of oysters setting on shellstrings and on the bottom in lower Chesapeake Bay in 1972 was far lower than for the previous year, and the lowest overall set ever recorded.

The Pierre-Niobrara Unconformity In Western Nebraska, Harold M. Degraw Jan 1973

The Pierre-Niobrara Unconformity In Western Nebraska, Harold M. Degraw

Conservation and Survey Division

The Pierre-Niobrara unconformity, one of several significant unconformities in the Cretaceous System of the Western Interior region, has not generally been recognized. Detailed correlation of electric logs of a large number of wells in western Nebraska provides evidence of its existence. Isopach maps of the beds occupying three identifiable stratigraphic intervals - a redefined Niobrara Formation, an unnamed uppermost Niobrara unit, and an unnamed basal Pierre unit, which includes the Ardmore Bentonite - provide recognizable geologic patterns that permit reconstruction of the stages of development of the unconformity. The upper part of the Niobrara Formation has been truncated in several …

Removal Of Color From Surface Water In Central Florida, Joseph R. Wanielista Jan 1973

Removal Of Color From Surface Water In Central Florida, Joseph R. Wanielista

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The USPHS limits color in water to 15 color units. However, it is desirable to remove all the color. Color in surface water is mainly due to humic substances and was found in concentrations varying up to 450 color units. Removal of color by coagulation and flocculation has been practiced over the years. The mechanisms involved have not yet been fully understood. During the course of this investigation, a literature survey, studying the nature of color, mechanisms or color removal, and optimum color removal conditions, has been conducted. Samples have been obtained from surface waters in Central Florida; namely Big …

1973 Time Of Planting And Rate Of Seeding On Lupin Yield, G Walton Jan 1973

1973 Time Of Planting And Rate Of Seeding On Lupin Yield, G Walton

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Of the four time of planting trials two definitely showed superiority of earlier seeding (73BA5, 73E6). The two trials in the Southwest (73BR14 and 73MT7) gave highest yields with June sowing compared to May. Three trials (73BR14, 73E6 and 73BA5) appear to have a Variety x Time interaction for plant density, but no definite trend for either Uniharvest or Unicrop although later sowing reduced plant density. Seeding rates in excess of 82 kg/ha gave the highest yields in all trials. The rate of seeding experiments (73BA5 and 73MT7) show that the best crop density for yield (graph) lies between 8 …

A Monte Carlo Comparison Of Nonparametric Reliability Estimators, Jia-Jinn Yueh Jan 1973

A Monte Carlo Comparison Of Nonparametric Reliability Estimators, Jia-Jinn Yueh

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

It is very difficult to construct a reliability model for a complex system. However, the reliability model for a series configuration is relatively simple. In the simplest case in which the components are mutually independent, the system reliability can be represented as follows:

Rs(x) = ∑ni=1Ri(x),

where Ri is the reliability for the ith component. It is also known that for moderate levels of system reliability for large systems, the component reliability must be high.

Extreme Value Theory indicates that under very general conditions, the initial form of the distribution function …

Chemical Survey Of Selected South Dakota Lake Sediments, Alan Ross Swanson Jan 1973

Chemical Survey Of Selected South Dakota Lake Sediments, Alan Ross Swanson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Available phosphorus, organic carbon, and organic nitrogen were measured in bottom sediments of 16 lakes and ponds in northeast South Dakota. These lakes were glaciated, relatively shallow, and productive. Ranges of the surface sediments were: available phosphorus, 2 to 42 ppm; organic carbon, 0.94 to 5.34 percent; and organic nitrogen, 0.29 to 0.79 percent. Ranges of subsurface sediments were: available phosphorus, 2 to 39 ppm; organic carbon, 0.54 to 6.06 percent; organic nitrogen, 0.19 to 0.88 percent. Concentrations in most lakes varied little from top to bottom. Hard-bottomed lakes generally decreased in nutrient concentrations from sediment surface of subsurface. Lower …

Origin And Transport Of Nutrients In The Upper Big Sioux River, South Dakota, Charles William Thompson Jan 1973

Origin And Transport Of Nutrients In The Upper Big Sioux River, South Dakota, Charles William Thompson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The upper Big Sioux River Basin, in northeastern South Dakota, was studied to determine the origin and transport of nutrients in the Big Sioux River. The area was divided into three segments. Two of the segments, the Big Sioux River and Willow Creek Basins, were primarily agricultural drainage areas, and one segment was the city of Watertown. Sampling stations were selected to facilitate the determination of nutrient inputs to the river from each of these segments and to determine the nutrient load in the river leaving the study area. Nutrients studied included total orthophosphate and the particulate and dissolved fractions …

Evaluation Of Cattle Use Of A Deer Winter Range In The Black Hills, David C. Hamm Jan 1973

Evaluation Of Cattle Use Of A Deer Winter Range In The Black Hills, David C. Hamm

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cattle use of a deer winter range in the Black Hills was investigated during the summer grazing seasons of 1971-1972. A U.S. Forest Service grazing allotment situated between Mystic and Redfern, South Dakota, was used as the study area. The allotment was divided into five grazing units or pastures managed collectively under a “rest-rotation” system of grazing. Three study sites were selected in each unit of the allotment, and 75 exclosures were erected on each site; a paired-plot method was used to collect data. Indices to use of sites by deer and cattle were obtained by counts of deer pellet …

Evaluation Of Giant Canada Goose Restoration In Western South Dakota, Dennis L. Lengkeek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A study of giant Canada goose (Branta Canadensis maxima) restoration in western South Dakota was conducted during 1970 and 1971. Nesting, production and mortality, homing, and pioneering were evaluated both years. Nesting began April 4 in 1970 and extended for 73 days, but the peak of nesting occurred from April 29 to May 5. In 1971, nesting began April 1 and continued for 69 days, with the peak occurring April 8-14. The peak of hatching occurred June 6-12 in 1970 and May 8-14 during 1971. Small stockponds were utilized for nesting both years. Islands were preferred nesting sites. Peninsulas and …

Nuclear Charge Distribution Of Tm¹⁶⁹, Eugene Clark Deci Jan 1973

Nuclear Charge Distribution Of Tm¹⁶⁹, Eugene Clark Deci

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The distribution of electrical charge in the nucleus of Tm169 was determined by measurement of the energies of the X rays of muonic atoms of Tm169.

The values of the energies of the K X rays and the L X rays were calculated from a model assuming an anisotropic Fermi distribution of charge, and compared to the treasured values. The assumed distribution is a function of three parameters; a half radius, a surface thickness, and a measure of the anisotropy.

The values of the parameters were varied to find the values that gave the best agreement with …

The Weakly Coupled Polaron, Kou-Ying Yang Moravan Jan 1973

The Weakly Coupled Polaron, Kou-Ying Yang Moravan

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The Green's Function technique has been used to investigate the properties of weakly coupled longitudinal optical polarons. By taking into consideration the contribution of the multi-phonon and the phonon-cross-exchange diagrams in the self-energy, a vertex correction has been made to the lowest order diagram. The real part and the imaginary part of the self-energy are obtained. The dispersion relationship obtained by this approximation gives the ground state energy which is lower than the upper bound obtained from the variational method. Also, the spectral weight function for several momentum values has been calculated. It shows that the quasi-particle description is good …

Nuclear Charge Distribution Of ¹⁸¹Ta, David Edward Mcloughlin Jan 1973

Nuclear Charge Distribution Of ¹⁸¹Ta, David Edward Mcloughlin

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The energies of the x rays emitted by the muonic atom of 181Ta were measured by a Ge(Li) solid state detector. From the clustering of these gamma rays it was possible to identify the transitions of the muonic atom which produced them. When a form is chosen for the nuclear charge distribution, a theoretical spectrum can be calculated…The parameters , c, and t can then be chosen to make the calculated spectrum coincide for the 3D-2P, and 2P-1S transitions with the observed spectrum.

The first part of the calculation was performed in the following way. The monopole part of …

Extension Of Belyaev-Zelivinski Method Of Rotation As Intrinsic Nuclear Excitation, Jeffrey W. Gray Jan 1973

Extension Of Belyaev-Zelivinski Method Of Rotation As Intrinsic Nuclear Excitation, Jeffrey W. Gray

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The method of Belyaev and Zelevinski for handling the rotational collective states of deformed nuclei has been extended. It is shown how a [J(J+1)]2 term naturally occurs in the energy spectrum of a rotational band for even-even nuclei. This is accomplished by modifying the assumption that Belyaev and Zelevinski imposed on their |n> states. This leads to a definite relationship between the coefficient of the J(J+1) and [J(J+1)]2 terms in the energy spectrum. This technique is applied to a single isolated j-level and to an arbitrary level scheme.
