Pmr Spectra Of The 4-Alkylnitrobenzenes, Donald W. Beistel, Hsin-Liang Chen
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Evidence of first-order alkyl-ring proton coupling is reported for the 4-alkylnitrobenzenes. Typical coupling constants of 0.7 Hz and 0.3 Hz were found for α-alkyl coupling with the ortho and meta ring protons, respectively, when the alkyl function was methyl, ethyl, and isopropyl. No β-alkyl coupling with ring protons was observed for the ethyl, isopropyl, or t -butyl groups, suggesting that the magnitude of the coupling constant is vanishingly small.

Compatibility And Stability Of 8% Amino Acids Solution In Combination With Electrolytes, Vitamins And Antibiotics, David Harold Schuetz
Compatibility And Stability Of 8% Amino Acids Solution In Combination With Electrolytes, Vitamins And Antibiotics, David Harold Schuetz
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
For centuries, researchers have attempted to devise the ideal parenteral nutritional product readily amenable to physiological requirements. Hyperalimentation, intravenous alimentation, parenteral alimentation, parenteral feeding, and total parenteral nutrition are synonyms which refer to a method of complete intravenous nutrition reserved for patients demonstrating negative nitrogen balance.
The nutrient solution appeared to accommodate levels of potassium phosphate, calcium gluconate, and magnesium sulfate well in excess of “usual” therapeutic concentrations. Similarly, commonly employed vitamin supplements and insulin were examined in combination with the hyperalimentation solution and failed to demonstrate signs of physical incompatibility. However, instrumental analysis, i.e., U.V. spectroscopy and thin-layer chromatography, …

Oxidation Of Thin Silver Films By Ozone And Atomic Oxygen, Lawrence R. Thorne
Oxidation Of Thin Silver Films By Ozone And Atomic Oxygen, Lawrence R. Thorne
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Recently, thin silver film detectors have been used to determine atomic oxygen profiles in the 70-100 km region of the upper atmosphere. The detectors' sensitivity to atomic oxygen is the result of the formation of silver oxide(s) which cause their electrical resistance to increase. A common procedure to calibrate and to make these detectors more sensitive is to cycle them through a series of three or more oxidations and reductions. This paper indicates that this cycling makes silver films more sensitive to ozone, causing them to be usable only at heights greater than 38 km. Also reported herein are experimentally …
Soil Structure Changes Under Wheatbelt Farming Systems, T C. Stoneman
Soil Structure Changes Under Wheatbelt Farming Systems, T C. Stoneman
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
A review of 14 years of Department of Agriculture research into the effects of wheatbelt fanning practices on soil structure reaches the general conclusion that cultivation and grazing practices influence soil structure, and that structure can be improved by soil amendments and pasture growth.
Little data has been obtained to relate plant growth to improved soil structure, as measured.
Investigation Of Surface Films - Chesapeake Bay Entrance, William G. Macintyre, Craig C. Smith, Et Al
Investigation Of Surface Films - Chesapeake Bay Entrance, William G. Macintyre, Craig C. Smith, Et Al
Reports
Experimental point source oil releases have been conducted in the Chesapeake Bay mouth area. Predictions of oil slick motion were tested, and slicks were sampled and analyzed to measure their aging rates over periods up to 32 hours. Remote sensing. techniques were used to detect and measure the spreading rate of oil. Some laboratory oil film aging experiments were done to further document and elucidate aging processes. Results indicate· a,reasonable motion prediction, an explanation of the non-biological initial aging of oil films, and a fair corroboration of a theoretical oil spreading model.

A Water Resource Management Model, Upper Jordan River Drainage, Utah, Bi-Huei Wang, James I. Felix, Rick L. Gold, Craig T. Jones, J. Paul Riley
Reports
As demands upon available water supplies increase within a river basin, there is an accompanying increase in the need to assess the downstream consequences resulting from changes at specific locations within the hydrologic system. This problem is approached in this study by digital computer simulation of the hydrologic system. Modeling concepts are based upon basic relationships which describe the various hydrologic processes. Within a hydrologic system these relationships are linked by the continuity-of-mass principle which requires a mass balance at all points. Spatial resolution is achieved by considering the modeled area as a series of subbasins. The time increment adopted …

The …
Effect Of Air Bubble Solution On Air-Sea Gas Exchange, Larry P. Atkinson
Effect Of Air Bubble Solution On Air-Sea Gas Exchange, Larry P. Atkinson
CCPO Publications
Recent data on ambient wave generated oceanic bubble spectra (Medwin, 1970) permit the calculation of the influence of bubble solution on air-sea gas exchange. Schulkin's formula is used to estimate the depth variation of bubbles, and a square law is used to estimate the increase of bubble volume with wind speed. Calculations indicate that bubble solution can be a very significant factor in gas exchange. Bubble solution enhances gas input and retards degassing of the water column. Preliminary data show a lag time of about 5 hours in the response of the water column to an atmospheric pressure change.

Integrated Measurement Of Soil Moisture By Use Of Radio Waves, Duane G. Chadwick
Integrated Measurement Of Soil Moisture By Use Of Radio Waves, Duane G. Chadwick
Reports
An integrated value of soil moisture can be determine dby measuring the attenuation of vertically-polarized surface radio waves taht are propagated over the ground between a transmitting and receiving atenna. Soil moisture values in the root-zone region were measured over longitudinal distances typically ranging from 50 feet to 600 feet with good results. Integrated soil moisture measurements over greater distances are also possible. Received field strength of propaged radio surface waves closely matches theoretical calculations. The measurement is easily made and does not disturb the soil. Dense, green vegetation, such as alfalfa or corn, causes errors in measurement accuracy. Less …
Social, Economic, Environmental, And Technical Factors Influencing Water Reuse, A. Bruce Bishop, Suravuth Pratishthananda, John Keith, Craig Colton, A. Berry Crawford
Social, Economic, Environmental, And Technical Factors Influencing Water Reuse, A. Bruce Bishop, Suravuth Pratishthananda, John Keith, Craig Colton, A. Berry Crawford
Reports
A growing population together with rising per capita income has resulted in increased demand for water for virtually all uses. At the same time there has been increased public concern for maintaining the quality of streams for recreation, sight-seeing, and other social uses, and to conserve environmental values. A partial answer to these conflicts in water use and management is more extensive waste water reclamation and reuse. Heretofore, water salvage and reuse has been mainly practiced in specific operational cases, such as recycling industrial process water, or on an ad hoc basis, such as a series of diversions and subsequent …

The Demand For Agricultural Water In Utah, Mark H. Anderson, Jay C. Andersen, John E. Keith, Calvin G. Clyde
Reports
Water is recognized as an essential element in Utah's agricultural economy. It is the subject of much controvery and litigation and yet most discussion of the subject is based on opinions and prejudice rather than upon the basis of sound scientific evidence. This paper attempts to provide some of the economic information necessary for sound decisions in the development and use of Utah's water resources with respect to agriculture. Utah has been divided into ten drainage regions (hydrologi subregions) and the presently irrigated and potentially irrigable land according to land class were estimated for each country or portion of a …
