The Role Of Compulsory Sealanes In Resolving Multiple-Use Conflict On The Continental Shelf, Alfred P. Manning Apr 1971

The Role Of Compulsory Sealanes In Resolving Multiple-Use Conflict On The Continental Shelf, Alfred P. Manning

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

An analysis of the nature of multiple-use conflict on the continental shelf developed with particular emphasis on the involvement of ocean transportation and offshore oil recovery. The wide-ranging effects which offshore marine accidents may have on coastal residents is discussed. Trends indicate a growth in the level of conflict stemming from competition between those wishing to use the same ocean space for the same purpose, the same ocean space for different purposes, and different but related ocean space for incompatible purposes. Ocean transportation is identified as the single common element in all three conflict categories. Restriction on traditional concepts of …

The United States Navy And An International Seabed Regime (U), Theodore E. Newark Apr 1971

The United States Navy And An International Seabed Regime (U), Theodore E. Newark

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The paper proposes to briefly outline the Navy's general role as one element of this nation's overall seapower. The expanding sources of conflicting interest in uses of the sea are examined along with the barely visible form which debates are presently giving toward the creation of an international regime for the peaceful exploration and exploitation of the natural resources of the seabed and its subsoil, located beyond the limits of national jurisdiction. Naval adjustment to the requirements expected to derive from new aspects of the evolving changes to present law of the sea are analyzed and recommendations are drawn in …

Oceanic Disposal Of Radioactive Wastes: Effects And Proposals, Billy M. Ervin Apr 1971

Oceanic Disposal Of Radioactive Wastes: Effects And Proposals, Billy M. Ervin

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

An investigation of the effects of radioactive waste disposal into the oceans pursued by an examination of the hazards involved, the present sources of radioactive wastes and future prospects. The longevity of many radioactive elements, coupled with the awesome consequences to which even a slight miscalculation may lead, are convincing arguments for the most conservative approach to the problem of disposal of radioactive wastes. Present day disposal of radioactive wastes in the oceans, while significant, have not yet had major discernible effects on man or marine life. However, with the worldwide explosion of electrical power demand and the increasing use …

A Functional Analysis Of The Naval Weather Service System, Charles P. Pfarrer Jr. Apr 1971

A Functional Analysis Of The Naval Weather Service System, Charles P. Pfarrer Jr.

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the Naval Weather Service system by defining its functions; for the available literature does not convey the concept of interacting elements contributing to the operation of the larger whole. This paper concentrates on articulating the contributions of the related actions to the Naval Weather Service system. The aim is for clarity of exposition. The purpose is to get across the big picture. Int introspective format ensues formally from the rational foundations of the conceptual mode of inquiry. This paper addresses the Naval Weather Service system and not the scientific and technological process …

Management Of Natural Lakes In The Northern Great Plains, D. B. Mccarraher Apr 1971

Management Of Natural Lakes In The Northern Great Plains, D. B. Mccarraher

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

Approximately 2,800 natural lakes smaller than 10 acres in size are found in the northern plains region of Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota. Water quality characteristics vary greatly among lakes in close geographical proximity. They range from fresh to highly mineralized bicarbonate-carbonate-hydroxide (alkaline) to chloro-sulfate (saline) types and regionally represent the largest concentration of inland mineral waters in North America. Water quality together with shallow basin morphometry exert major environmental influences on the fisheries in great plains natural lakes.

In the sandhills region of Nebraska (20,000 sq. mi.) only about 45% of the estimated 1,400 natural lakes support fish …

Guidebook To The Late Pliocene And Early Pleistocene Of Nebraska, T. M. Stout, H. M. Degraw, L. G. Tanner, K. O. Stanley, William J. Wayne, J. B. Swinehart

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The interesting geographic and even strategic position of Nebraska between regions of mountain and interior glaciation during the Quaternary was emphasized by A. L. Lugn, Professor Emeritus of Geology at the University of Nebraska, more than thirty years ago. The earlier studies are summarized in two principal works by Lugn (1935; 1939a; see Selected References), to whom this guidebook is dedicated, much has been learned since and much remains to be recorded concerning the Tertiary and Pleistocene of Nebraska. In this centennial year, commemorating the beginning of a second century of geological instruction at the University of Nebraska, it seems …

Spectroscopic Measurement Of The Electron Temperature In The Tenuous Argon Ion Laser Plasma, Dane Danijel Bicanic Apr 1971

Spectroscopic Measurement Of The Electron Temperature In The Tenuous Argon Ion Laser Plasma, Dane Danijel Bicanic

Physics Theses & Dissertations

The validity of the line intensity ratio technique for measuring the electron temperature was examined for an argon plasma with a "population inversion" i.e., the number of ions with electrons in the upper 4p levels was greater than in the lower 4s levels. The line intensities from these levels, the argon ion lasing transitions, were measured in a pulsed tenuous plasma at 110μ Hg produced by discharging a capacitor through a tube 2m long and 7mm inside diameter. The electron impact cross sections for simultaneous excitation and ionization as measured by Latimer and St. John were used and averaged over …

Track Theory And Radiation Quality, Robert Katz Mar 1971

Track Theory And Radiation Quality, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

Radiation detection and damage data from several physical, chemical, and biological systems have been analyzed by a unified track theory, in which observed effects are attributed to the interaction of secondary electrons with the medium. Gamma-ray dose-response curves are combined with calculations of the spatial dose distribution about an ion's path to yield dose-response curves (survival curves) for heavy ion bombardment, through appropriately defined parameters. Perplexing phenomena associated with high LET radiation are sorted out according to track regime (grain-count or track-width), inactivation mode (gamma-kill or ion-kill), structural complexity (elementary, cellular, multicellular), and end-point. The central problem in assigning a …

Low-Lying Even-Parity Resonances In Ki:Ag+, Roger D. Kirby

Roger Kirby Publications

Lattice resonances of Eg symmetry (16.35 cm-1) and A1g symmetry (25 cm-1) have been found in KI:Ag+ using far-infrared spectroscopic techniques. The two even-parity modes are found to be anharmonically coupled to the T1u- symmetry resonant mode at 17.3 cm-1, giving rise to the combination bands observed at 30 and 44.4 cm-1.

Effects Of Season And Intensity Of Use On Desert Vegetation, C. Wayne Cook Mar 1971

Effects Of Season And Intensity Of Use On Desert Vegetation, C. Wayne Cook

UAES Bulletins

Desert ranges of the Great Basin area support about 9 million cattle and sheep for 5 to 6 months each winter. Many of these same ranges are used by cattle year-long.

If forage is not available on desert ranges, livestock have to be wintered on farmsteads or in feedlots after they are forced from the mountains and foothills by snow. Since feeding during the winter is expensive and reduces the economic efficiency of the range livestock operation, there is real advantage in properly managing the desert ranges and conserving the supply of forage for winter grazing.

Managing desert ranges for …
