Electric Field And Plasma Density Measurements In The Auroral Electrojet, R. Pfaff, M. C. Kelley, Bela G. Fejer, E. Kudeki, C. W. Carlson, A. Pedersen, B. Hausler
Electric Field And Plasma Density Measurements In The Auroral Electrojet, R. Pfaff, M. C. Kelley, Bela G. Fejer, E. Kudeki, C. W. Carlson, A. Pedersen, B. Hausler
Bela G. Fejer
Intense electrostatic waves in the auroral E region have been detected simultaneously on two payloads launched in a mother-daughter configuration from Kiruna, Sweden. The data sets comprise electric field and density measurements from the ambient (dc) conditions to fluctuations as high as 50 kHz. The dc electric field measured by both payloads was 54 mV/m northwest, which corresponded to an electron drift velocity of 1080 m/s. This electric field drove two-stream waves perpendicular to both B and E observed by both spacecraft throughout an altitude region which agrees quite well with the range predicted by linear two-stream theory. The power …

Ion Cyclotron Waves As Apossible Source Of Resonant Auroral Radar Echoes, Bela G. Fejer, R. W. Reed, D. T. Farley, W. E. Swartz, M. C. Kelley
Bela G. Fejer
Auroral backscatter radar observations were made from Ithaca, New York, at 50 MHz during the early morning of April 1, 1976, a period of high magnetic disturbance (Kp ∼ 8). The backscattered power showed large rapid (time scale of a few minutes or less) variations, characteristic of discrete radar aurora, from L = 3.5–4. Doppler spectra of waves propagating in nearly the north-south direction from up to 28 different ranges were obtained simultaneously with good spatial (7.5 km) and temporal (2 s) resolution. Some unusual spectra with very narrow peaks at Doppler shifts between about 70 and 90 Hz were …

Directional And Dynamic Variations Ofauroral Power Spectra Related To The Ionospheric Electron Drift Velocity, E. Nielsen, C. I. Haldoupis, Bela G. Fejer, H. M. Ierkic
Bela G. Fejer
Power spectral observations of auroral electron density fluctuations with a scale length of nearly 1 m have been made with the STARE system (Scandinavian twin auroral radar experiment). Simultaneous measurements of the mean radial Doppler velocities were used to derive estimates of the ionospheric electron drift velocity. The data were analyzed to determine the spectral dependence on the magnitude and direction of the electron drift velocity. The two spectral types, characterized as “narrow” and “broad,” were observed simultaneously from the same scattering volume. The width of the broad spectrum (up to about 1200 Hz) can be at least 3 times …
Theory Of Plasma Waves In The Auroral E-Region, Bela G. Fejer, J. Providakes, D. T. Farley
Theory Of Plasma Waves In The Auroral E-Region, Bela G. Fejer, J. Providakes, D. T. Farley
Bela G. Fejer
We have extended the linear fluid theory of electrojet plasma waves to the region where ion magnetization effects are important. Our general dispersion relation includes the effect of cross-field and field-aligned drifts, ion inertia, electron density gradients, and recombination. In the absence of density gradients and recombinational damping, the oscillation frequency at marginal instability is changed by the ion magnetization effects from the ion acoustic frequency, ω = kCs, to the modified ion cyclotron frequency ω² = Ωi² + k²Cs². These upper E region waves can be driven by field-aligned and/or cross-field drifts and have the smallest threshold drift velocities …

Small Mammals In Prairie Wetlands: Habitat Use And The Effects Of Wetland Modifications, Grey W. Pendleton
Small Mammals In Prairie Wetlands: Habitat Use And The Effects Of Wetland Modifications, Grey W. Pendleton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although well documented for other habitat types, small mammal habitat use patterns in prairie wetlands are poorly understood. The distribution of the mammal fauna of South Dakota is also not well known. Because of the lack of information in these areas, evaluation of the impacts of wetland modifications on the resident mammal community is not possible. The objectives of this study were (1) to document the species composition and abundance of small mammal communities inhabiting prairie wetland basins, (2) to determine the effects of small scale habitat modification on small mammals, (3) and to explain local species distribution patterns using …

Abundance, Biomass, And Diversity Of Aquatic Invertebrates In Level Ditches And Adjacent Natural Emergent Marsh In An Eastern South Dakota Wetland, Michael R. Broschart
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The aquatic invertebrate communities of level ditches and adjacent natural emergent marsh in a South Dakota prairie wetland were sampled during the summer of 1982. Collections were made in both the water column and the bottom substrates. Forty-five taxa were collected. Analysis of variance indicated that a significantly greater mean number of taxa and a larger mean number of all macroinvertebrates were present in level ditches than in the natural emergent marsh. No differences were detected for mean biomass of all macroinvertebrate taxa collectively. Several taxa had a greater mean number and biomass in the level ditches than in the …
Factors Affecting Water Quality And Microinvertebrate Distribution Within A Small Black Hills Stream, Henry G. Drewes
Factors Affecting Water Quality And Microinvertebrate Distribution Within A Small Black Hills Stream, Henry G. Drewes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A comparative evaluation of the benthic macroinvertebrate fauna was conducted concurrently with a physiochemical investigation on Slate Creek, Pennington County, South Dakota in the Black Hills. Water quality differences between years and among stations were detected in Slate Creek from both physiochemical and macroinvertebrate evaluations. The primary sources of disturbance to the Slate Creek study site during the sampling period were landscaping activities within the Deerfield Park Resort development and livestock activity. Increased runoff and elevated stream flows in 1982 were responsible for the variation in water quality between years. Water quality differences among stations indicated significantly (P < 0.05) higher turbidity and temperature immediately below the development site in 1981 and 1982. Significantly (P < 0.05) higher fecal coliform bacteria counts were observed at station 5 for both years, resulting from increased livestock activity. Phosphates and nitrates were highest at stations 4 and 5 but were not significantly (P > 0.05) different …

Intensive Culture Of Largemouth Bass And Walleye Fry In Experimental Systems, Gerald A. Wickstrom
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Six genera of invertebrates were made available to largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) fry for 25 days. Brachionus spp. was selected for during both day and night (1100 and 2300 h) for the first seven days. Cyclops vemalis was selected on days 1 - 14; it was selected for more during the day for days 1 - 7. Daphnia pulex and D. magna were selected for during days 15 - 25. As the fry grew during the study they ate significantly (P < 0.05) larger D. pulex and D. magna. Moina brachiata was not selected for; it was eaten throughout the study in approximately the same proportion as available. Diaptomus spp. And Ceanestheriella setosa were not eaten. The fry increased in mean length from 6.5 mm on day 1 to 29.8 mm on day 25 of the study. Mean daily length increase was 0.93 mm. Newly hatched walleye (Stizostedion vitreum vitreum) fry were intensively cultured on a diet of live zooplankton under three conditions for 48 days. The fry were reared in tanks under constant illumination (375 lux), in tanks under reduced illumination (105 lux), and in tanks which contained visual interceptors (400 lux). Mean survival of walleyes was 14.0% in tanks under constant illumination, 11.6% in tanks under reduced illumination, and 4.7% in tanks which contained visual interceptors. Mean unaccountable mortality of walleyes was 21.8% in constant illumination tanks, 35.7% in reduced illumination tanks, and 27.4% in tanks with visual interceptors. The fry increased in mean length from 8.6 mm at the start of the study to 36.3 mm (0.76 mm/day) in constant illumination tanks, 36.6 mm (0.76 mm/day) in reduced illumination tanks, and 33.7 mm (0.70 mm/day) in tanks with visual interceptors after 48 days of intensive culture.

Acoustic Radiation-Induced Static Strain In Single Crystal Silicon, Ka Kui Peter Li
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Quantitative verification of the existence of static acoustic displacements generated by acoustic waves propagating in single crystal samples of intrinsic silicon is presented. Measurements are made of the static displacements generated by 30 MHz acoustic compressional waves propagating along the 111 , 110 , and 100 crystalline directions. From these measurements the nonlinearity parameters are calculated and found to have the value 3.87 along the 111 direction, 4.23 along the 110 direction, and 2.13 along the 100 direction. These results are in agreement with values obtained independently from harmonic generation and pressure derivative measurements. Implications of the present work to …
A Theory Of Associative Detachment, Susan Elizabeth. Haywood
A Theory Of Associative Detachment, Susan Elizabeth. Haywood
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
In this thesis a theory of associative detachment (A('-) + B (--->) AB + e) is presented. The theory is based on the close-coupling theory of Wang and Delos, but is more general in that final states of the nuclei (AB) are treated quantum mechanically. This is necessary since the molecule may be in any one of several vibrational states. The Schroedinger equation is reduced to an infinite set of coupled equations using carefully chosen assumptions. The coupled equations are uncoupled and the resulting equation for the wave function of the negative ion is solved to zero and first …

Molecular sieve aluminosilicates, such as ZSM‐5 and mordenite, when impregnated with highly dispersed Fe, yield catalysts for the selective conversion of coal‐derived syngas (CO+H2) to liquid hydrocarbon fuels. Fe performs the primary Fischer‐Tropsch (FT) syngas to yield light olefins which are converted by the acidic (H+) and shape‐selective function of the zeolite to high octane gasoline components. The physical aspects of the Fe‐mordenite interaction studied by magnetic measurements, Mössbauer, and IR spectroscopy are reported and correlations with the catalytic properties are drawn. Mordenite samples with [SiO2/Al2O3] ratio in the range …

The abundance of 4 levels of the lower Chesapeake Bay food chain (Chlorophyll a, herbivores, ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi, and Scyphomedusa Chrysaora quinquecirrha) were monitored twice weekly at 4 stations from May 10 through Sep 30, 1982 in the Lafayette and Elizabeth Rivers (Virginia). The herbivore standing stock, largely copepods, declined sharply in late May when M. Jeidyi appeared, but rebounded a month later when C. quinquecirrha medusae reduced the ctenophore population. Despite the additional presence of Aurelia aurita (Scyphomedusa) from Jul onward, herbivore abundance remained at moderate levels until the end of the study period. Phytoplankton abundance fluctuated …

Coastal upwelling occurs off the Rias Bajas of Spain between April and October. Superimposed on large-scale upwelling is a mesoscale regime of enhanced upwelling induced by topographic influences. We show that the region surrounding Cape Finisterre has intensified topographically induced upwelling.
The rias have a relatively unobstructed connection with the open ocean. Upwelling of high nitrate water on the continental shelf by Ekman transport sets up pressure gradients at the mouth of the rias that induce upwelled water to flow into the rias. Deep water in the rias responds directly to cycles of upwelling and downwelling on the continental shelf.

Archaeology/Anthropology
This thesis deals with a group of artifact collections gathered by local amateurs from a series of sites along the western shoreline of Cascade Reservoir. This study uses these artifacts as a basis to put together a preliminary view of Long Valley prehistory. Outlines of the basic artifact types are formulated and placed into a chronology based upon typological comparisons and obsidian hydration. Previous archaeological work, the ethnohistory, and local geology of the valley are discussed and related ot the sites, used in this study, in order to determine their patterns and characteristics. From these efforts directions for further research …
