Bromination Of 1,2-Cyclononadiene And 1,3-Dimethylallene, Edward Benny Samuel
Bromination Of 1,2-Cyclononadiene And 1,3-Dimethylallene, Edward Benny Samuel
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Much information has been obtained on the orientation of unsymmetrical reagents about substituted allenes. Although hydrogen halide addition to 1,2-propadiene yields 2-halopropenes,20,31 it has been ample demonstrated, at least in the case of halogenation and oxymercuration of the 1,2-alkyl substituted allenes, that the attacking electrophile ends up in the product attached to the central carbon of the original allenic system. 20,22,31,34,38,39,40 Using optically active 1,3-dimethylallene(15) it has been shown that the bromination and oxymercuration of 15 is stereospecific. 22,39Knowledge of the absolute configurations of the optically active addition products have made it possible to propose a plausible mechanism …

The Effects Of Divalent Metal Ions On The Micellar Properties Of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate, Michael U. Oko, Raymond L. Venable
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Critical micelle concentrations and micellar molecular weights have been determined for sodium dodecyl sulfate in the presence of nitrates of copper, lead, zinc, and magnesium and critical micelle concentrations have been determined with sodium nitrate and silver nitrate as the added electrolytes. The thickness of the ionic atmosphere at the critical micelle concentration has been found to be 34.1 Å with no electrolyte present and 33.6 Å with 9.66 x 10-6 M sodium or silver nitrate and was found to increase upon addition of the 2:1 electrolytes. This is explained in terms of molecular and ionic interactions. Micellar molecular weights …

It is distinguishable from the typical form principally by the thin, acuminate form of the protuberance of the protopodite of the 2nd male peraeopod, by the endopodite of the 1st pleopod which bears 3-4 setae (1-2 in M. c. caeca), by the somewhat wider endopodite of the 3rd pleopod and by the shorter, only slightly curved uropods. A sketch shows the situation of 6 newly discovered localities in northern Croatia, 3 of …
Preference Responses And Tolerances Of The Troglobitic Carabid Beetle, Rhadine Subterranea, Robert W. Mitchell
Preference Responses And Tolerances Of The Troglobitic Carabid Beetle, Rhadine Subterranea, Robert W. Mitchell
International Journal of Speleology
Studies were made on the preference responses and tolerances of the troglobitic carabid beetle Rhadine subterranea to light, temperature, and relative humidity. The beetles are weakly photonegative and appear to have a strong preference for atmospheres of low saturation deficit. Both these responses seem to be orthokineses. They have a strongly developed temperature sense, and their temperature preferendum shifts seasonally. This response seems to be a klinotaxis. They are neither strongly stenothermal nor stenohygrobic. The preference responses, especially that of temperature, are probably mechanisms tending to restrict the beetles to their habitat. The tolerance data suggest that the epigeum could, …
Thermal Expansivity And Refractive Index Determinations For Some Hydrosol Systems And Their Similarity To Properties Ascribed To "Anomalous" Water, Gerald Wayne Chappue
Thermal Expansivity And Refractive Index Determinations For Some Hydrosol Systems And Their Similarity To Properties Ascribed To "Anomalous" Water, Gerald Wayne Chappue
Masters Theses
"The characteristic thermal expansion and refractive index of aqueous dispersions of SiO₂ and NaOH were determined for samples contained in quartz micro-capillaries. Comparison is made with the expansivity and refractive properties of anomalous water or polywater as reported by other investigators. The similarity between the properties and behavior of various hydrosol systems and those ascribed to anomalous water is cited as a serious challenge to the hypothesized existence of an allotropic modification of water"--Abstract, page ii.

Flathead catfish, Pylodictus olivaris (Rafinesque), were studied in approximately 83.7 km of unchannelized and 67.6 km miles of channelized Missouri River. Growth rates were slower in the unchannelized section than they were in the channelized section. The oldest fish in the unchannelized section was 25 years old, while in the channelized study area the oldest was 10 years. In the pectoral spines of progressively older fish from both sections, enlargement of the lumen obliterated early annuli. Much of the annual increment of growth was accomplished during June, July and August. Males became sexually mature at 3 to 4 years of …

Experimental And Theoretical Study Of The Sign Preference In The Nucleation Of Water Vapor, Daniel R. White, James L. Kassner
Experimental And Theoretical Study Of The Sign Preference In The Nucleation Of Water Vapor, Daniel R. White, James L. Kassner
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The nucleation of water vapor on ions in atmospheres of helium and argon was studied using an expansion type cloud chamber. Separation of the positive and negative ions was achieved so that the nucleation could be studied as a function of both the sign of the ionic charge and the supersaturation. A semiphenominological theory was developed as an extension of the classical liquid drop theory to include the effects of the ionic charge on the nucleation process. The theoretical model of the prenucleation embryo was assumed to possess an oriented dipole surface layer with the direction of orientation dependent on …
Heisenberg Ferromagnet With Biquadratic Exchange, Harry A. Brown
Heisenberg Ferromagnet With Biquadratic Exchange, Harry A. Brown
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The usual Heisenberg Hamiltonian with bilinear exchange -2JS→1•S→2 has been extended to include a biquadratic term -2αJ(S→1•S→2)2, with an adjustable parameter α. A method equivalent to constant coupling was employed to calculate the effect of the biquadratic exchange term on the Curie temperature, magnetization, susceptibility, specific heat, and entropy for lattices with spin-1 atoms. As α goes from 0 to 1, the Curie temperature falls by a factor 2 to 3, while the asymptotic Curie temperature is reduced by the factor 2. The magnetization rises much more rapidly below TC, and the specific heat has a peak and discontinuity several …

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The rates of oxidation of four chelating agents, NTA, EDTA, CDTA, and DTPA with Ce(IV), in sulfuric acid media, were determined spectrophotometrically by a stopped-flow technique. The reductive ability is in the order CDTA > EDTA > DTPA > NTA. The influence of varying the acidity of the medium was studied, and in each case a maximum in the rate constant vs. [H+] plot was observed. A possible interpretation of the reactivities and the influence of acidity is advanced. © 1971 Springer-Verlag.
Magnetic Behavior Of Rare-Earth Iron-Rich Intermetallic Compounds, Dominique Givord, Remy Lemaire, William Joseph James, Jean Michel Moreau, Jayant S. Shah
Magnetic Behavior Of Rare-Earth Iron-Rich Intermetallic Compounds, Dominique Givord, Remy Lemaire, William Joseph James, Jean Michel Moreau, Jayant S. Shah
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The thermal variation of lattice parameters of rare earth-transition metal intermetallic compounds rich in Fe, Co, or Ni in the temperature range of 25-900oK is studied. For the Fe compounds, negative thermal expansion is observed below their magnetic ordering temperatures regardless of the nature of substitutional ordering. For Co and Ni compounds, the thermal expansion behavior is normal. It is then concluded that for the Fe compounds, the magnetic properties are mainly determined by the Fe-Fe interatomic distances and the number of Fe nearest neighbors, whereas for Co and Ni compounds the magnetic properties are determined by the conduction electron …

Palladium(Ii) And Platinum(Ii) Complexes Of 2-Cyanophenyl Diphenylphosphine, David Harrison Payne
Palladium(Ii) And Platinum(Ii) Complexes Of 2-Cyanophenyl Diphenylphosphine, David Harrison Payne
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
There has been no successful chelation of any phosphorus-acetylenic or phosphorous-nitrile ligand. The objectives of this study were to synthesize such ligands and to study their chemistry and chelating tendencies. The best choice appeared to be the preparation of ortho-substituted triphenylphosphines similar to the chelating ligand allylphenyldiphenylphosphine. The Grignard reactions utilized in the preparation of the olefinic compound could not be used in most cases due to the high reactivity of the acetylene and nitrile function Bromobenzene and iodobenzene have been reacted with alkali metal phosphines under conditions that were probably too drastic for the acetylenic and nitrile functions. There …
Fluorescence Lifetimes And Quantum Efficiencies Of Some 1,10-Phenanthrolines, Paul John Tabakian
Fluorescence Lifetimes And Quantum Efficiencies Of Some 1,10-Phenanthrolines, Paul John Tabakian
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Fluorescence properties of fourteen substituted 1,10-Phenanthrolines were determined using two different solvent systems. Hour different sets of experiments were performed in order to measure fluorescence lifetimes, quantum efficiencies, absorption and corrected fluorescence spectra, oscillator strengths, and Stoke’s shifts. Two of the phenanthrolines, the 5-Nitro-1,10-Phenanthroline and the 1,10-Phenanthroline-5,6-Dione, did not fluoresce.
A new equation was developed in order to extract the true fluorescence lifetimes τ from the observed fluorescence output f(t), and the lamp decay function I(t). This equation was [see PDF] where “A” was the weight factor or the normalization constant for the appropriate functions. A test of this equation …
