Mössbauer Studies Of Bifeo₃-Pbtio₃ Perovskite-Type Solid Solutions, C. M. Yagnik, Robert Gerson, William Joseph James
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The Mössbauer spectra of the ferroelectric solid solutions (BiFeO3)x(PbTiO)1-x have been studied as a function of temperature, mainly between room temperature and 600°C, using 57Fe in the solutions as an absorber. The quadrupole splitting increased and the isomer shift decreased between x = 0.05 and x = 0.70, a range in which the solutions are tetragonal and paramagnetic, and in which the unit cell volume increases with increasing x. The isomer shift, in particular, was primarily determined by the unit cell volume. Data are presented on the internal magnetic field of the antiferromagnetic …

A Computer Model Of The Quantity And Chemical Quality Of Return Flow, Jimmie L. Thomas, J. Paul Riley, Eugene K. Israelsen
Reports
A hybrid computer program is developed to predict the water and salt outflow from a river basin in which irrigation is the major water user. A chemical model which predicts the quality of water percolated through a soil profile is combined with a general hydrologic model into form the system simulation model. The chemical model considers the reactions that occur in the soil, including the exchange of calcium, magnesium, and sodium cations on the soil complex, and the dissolution and precipitation of gypsum and lime. The chemical composition of the outflow is a function of these chemical processes within the …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Man has always searched for greater understanding of himself and his environment. As a result, much scientific investigation has been directed towards the understanding of the life process. In recent years, such scientific inquiry has become increasingly focused on the fundamental biochemical events taking place at the cellular, subcellular, and molecular levels. In the course of investigation into the nature of living things, research has often necessitated the development of new techniques and investigational tools to serve as experimental systems. Very often such new methods have made possible the discovery of previously unknown processes. One very interesting and useful investigational …

An Easy Access Interactive Statistical System For Use And Training In Biometry, Amos Addison Slaymaker Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
One of the most important tools of the applied statistician is the digital computer. It is natural, therefore, for the instructor in applied statistics to want his students to become familiar with the use of computers. If his students are going to get actual experience in using a computer for statistical analysis, he often has only two alternatives. The students can be required to write their own statistical programs or they can use programs already available through a computer facility.
If the course is to be taught such that each student is responsible for his own programs, the instructor must …

The Detection Of Magnetic Fields Caused By Groundwater, Duane G. Chadwick, Larry Jensen
The Detection Of Magnetic Fields Caused By Groundwater, Duane G. Chadwick, Larry Jensen
Reports
Perturbations on the earth’s magnetic field may coincide with the existence of groundwater. Theoretical calculations are made showing how and to what extent this effect may exist. The suggestion is also made that water dowsers may get a dowsing reaction as a result of entering a change in magnetic gradient. Tests were conducted to determine the statistical significance of dowsing reactions obtained by separate individuals dowsing in a common test area. Approximately 150 people participated in the experiment over a period of one year. Chi-square tests showed considerable statistical significance. Virtually all people tested experienced dowsing reactions though most of …

Extending Utility Of Non-Urban Water Supplies, Jay M. Bagley
Extending Utility Of Non-Urban Water Supplies, Jay M. Bagley
Reports
Extending the utility of an existing water supply in any river basin suggests a management-planning approach under three general guiding principles: (1) minimize depletions wherever possible (thereby maintaining a greater manageable quantity with subsequent potential to satisfy more uses); (2) generally preserve, protect, and improve water quality (thereby retaining its itility for use by a wider variety of potential users); and (3) make carefully considered allocations (thereby assuring multiples duty, more optimal sequencing, and shifts in use to conform to current and projected soil preferences). There are many technological and managerial techniques that can be employed to implement these principles. …
Prime Ideals In A Large Class Of Nonassociatiye Rings, Paul J. Zwier
Prime Ideals In A Large Class Of Nonassociatiye Rings, Paul J. Zwier
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
In this paper a definition is given for a prime ideal in an arbitrary nonassociative ring N under the single restriction that for a given positive integer 5^2, if A is an ideal in N, then A* is also an ideal. (N is called an snaring.) This definition is used in two ways. First it is used to define the prime radical of N and the usual theorems ensue. Second, under the assumption that the.s-naring N has a certain property (a), the Levitzki radical L(N) of N is defined and it is proved that L(N) is the intersection of those …

Geophysical And Geological Analysis Of A Fault-Like Linearity In The Lower Clackamas River Area, Clackamas County, Oregon, Ronald Jay Schmela
Dissertations and Theses
A fault-like linearity along the lower Clackamas River is evaluated by analysis of physiographic and structural alignments, geological relationships, and by gravity and magnetic data. The study has resulted in the verification of a structural feature extending along the Clackamas River and the eastern front of the Portland Hills. Physiographic alignments were examined in twelve 15 minute and two 7-1/2 minute quadrangle maps. A significant northeasterly morphologic trend, N. 20⁰ W. and N. 40° W., and other secondary trends, namely, the N-S, E-W, and N. 50-60° E., has developed in the Portland area. The consistent northwest trend is observed throughout …

Precision measurements of the Debye-Waller factor of Fe57 in Au using the wide black absorber technique have been made in the temperature range from room temperature to 830 K. The major source of error arises from Au Ly x-rays which are unresolved by the radiation detection system from the 14.4 KeV gamma ray. The K absorption edge of Br has been used to correct for the presence of x-rays.
These measurements have revealed the existence of two nonequivalent lattice sites which the Co57 impurity (parent of Fe57) may occupy. One of the sites has been …

For the past eight years, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science has been a participant of the National Pesticide Monitoring Program. Within the framework of this program, oyster samples have been collected from areas throughout the Chesapeake Bay.and analyzed for chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticides. The data from the last three years show that polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's) are being concentrated by the eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica. The highest concentrations found were always from one station, Hospital Point, in the Elizabeth River. Samples from this station, collected during the spring of 1971, contained residues of the PCB, Aroclor(R) 1254 of 2.8 ppm. For …
Finite Difference Solutions Of Axisymmetric Infiltration Through Partially Saturated Porous Media, Chi-Yuan Wei, Roland W. Jeppson
Finite Difference Solutions Of Axisymmetric Infiltration Through Partially Saturated Porous Media, Chi-Yuan Wei, Roland W. Jeppson
Reports
Solutions are obtained to the problem of steady-state partially saturated infiltration of moisture applied over a horizontal source circle which moved through homogeneous soils toward a water table. A commonly accepted relationship between relative permeability and capillary pressure has been utilized in conjunction wit Darcy’s law to formulate the mathematical model. The solutions have utilized an inverse formulation and have been obtained by finite difference. The inverse formulation considers the magnitudes of the cylindrical coordinates r and z as the dependent variables and the potential function and the Stokes’ stream function as the independent variables (i.e the problem is solved …
The Behavior Of Pvc Pipe Under The Action Of Water Hammer Pressure Waves, Gary Z. Watters
The Behavior Of Pvc Pipe Under The Action Of Water Hammer Pressure Waves, Gary Z. Watters
Reports
Introduction: Hydraulic transients, commonly referred to as water hammer, occur in a hydraulic system whenver the velocity of flow in any one of the pipes in the system is caused to change. The magnitude of the pressure waves generated by a given change in velocity depends on the geometry of the pipe system, the magnitude of the velocity change and the elastic wave velocity in the system componenets. In turn, the elastic wave velocity depends on the modulus of elasticity of the fluid and the pipe material, the size and thickness of the pipe, the method by which the pipe …
Development Of A Procedure For Determining Spacial And Time Variations Of Precipitation In Venezuela, Luis E. Ramirez
Development Of A Procedure For Determining Spacial And Time Variations Of Precipitation In Venezuela, Luis E. Ramirez
Reports
An analysis of the influence of the length of the record in the reliability of mean values of precipitation was made for the Caracus-Cagigal Station in Venezuela. Ten series of values were obtained for 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35-year periods, extracted for sliding intervals for the overall record of 75 years. The reliability of mean values computer from Figure 3 was quite low for 10, 15, and 20- year periods. The long term record means had higher reliability, increasing with the number of years in the records, but the differences are not important in terms of accuracy. Precipitation …
