Trace-Element Geochemistry Of Southwestern Turquoise, Anne Marguerite Colberg Sigleo May 1970

Trace-Element Geochemistry Of Southwestern Turquoise, Anne Marguerite Colberg Sigleo

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Southwestern turquoise (CuAl6(PO4)4 OH8 · 4H2O) is associated with Laramide intrusions along the eastern and southern margins of the Colorado Plateau in Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona, and with a zone of Late DevonianMississippian tectonic activity in Nevada. A review, of the previous work on the origin of turquoise is presented. Of these, the supergene hypothesis proposed by Sidney Paige in 1912 generally remains undisputed in the literature. Much of the data presented in this study, however, suggest a hydrothermal mode of formation. The concentrations of Co in particular are most similar …

Propagation Of Ultrasound In Plastic Crystals, Carl E. Scheie May 1970

Propagation Of Ultrasound In Plastic Crystals, Carl E. Scheie

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The study of the organic solid state, and in particular of plastic crystals, is a relatively new branch of physics (1,2). Timmermans first surmised the existence of these solids from the anomalous values of the entropies of fusion. The solids possess many of the characteristics of liquids. They are easily deformed by pressure and they show dielectric properties that can be described on the basis of rotation of the molecules in their lattice positions. Still they have a definite crystal structure. Thus, even though the molecules are not symmetric, they appear to be to some degree because of the rotation. …

Donor Properties Of Dimethylsulfoniumcyclopentadienylide And Tetramethylenesulfoniumcyclopentadienylide In Metal Complexes ; Part Ii. The Attempted Preparation Of Boron Tricyanide, Gary Scott Barney May 1970

Donor Properties Of Dimethylsulfoniumcyclopentadienylide And Tetramethylenesulfoniumcyclopentadienylide In Metal Complexes ; Part Ii. The Attempted Preparation Of Boron Tricyanide, Gary Scott Barney

Theses and Dissertations

Part I.--Complexes of dimethylsulfoniumcyclopentadientylide and tetramethylenesulfoniumcyclopentadienylide with metal ions were studied in order to determine the coordination site on the ylids. Infrared spectra indicate that the ylids are coordinated through the cyclopentadienyl ring in all complexes except for the Hg(CN)2 complexes. Coordination-of the HgI2, CdI2, ZnCl2, and AgNO3 complexes is through the number one position on the ring as suggested by NMR data. Infrared and NMR data strongly indicate that the ylids in the Hg(CN)2 complexes are coordinated through sulfur. Part II.--The only method given in the chemical literature for the preparation of boron tricyanide could not be duplicated in …

Studies In Computational Linguistics No. 1, The Recognition Of Alphabets, Edward F. Storm May 1970

Studies In Computational Linguistics No. 1, The Recognition Of Alphabets, Edward F. Storm

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

Formal parsing rules for programming languages often have machinery for recognizing identifiers, numerical constants, and other substrings whose internal structure is only marginally relevant to the language structure as a whole. In this note alphabets are introduced in which identifiers, constants, etc. are regarded as single symbols. An alphabet is thus constructed out of a finite set of characters, is identified as a regular language and a simple recognition algorithm is described, giving the language designer considerable latitude in his choice of alphabet.

Solutions Of The Problem Of Finding Confidence Intervals For The Two Normal Population With Unequal Variances, Ing-Haur Liu May 1970

Solutions Of The Problem Of Finding Confidence Intervals For The Two Normal Population With Unequal Variances, Ing-Haur Liu

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Comparison of the means of two normal populations is a simpler problem when the variance (if unknown) are assumed to be equal than it is when they are not equal. The main concern of this report is the latter case also called the Behrens [4] - Fisher [5] problem.

In this report the solutions proposed by Behrens-Fisher, Scheffe [10], Welch [12], Banerjee [3] and Hajek [8], will be described and compared. To this problem Scheffe proposed a solution which has the advantage that no special table is necessary for its use, since the variate has an exact "Student's t" distribution. …

Nonparametric Test Of Fit, Frena Nawabi May 1970

Nonparametric Test Of Fit, Frena Nawabi

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Most statistical methods require assumptions about the populations from which samples are taken. Usually these methods measure the parameters, such as variance, standard deviations, means, etc., of the respective populations. One example is the assumption that a given population can be approximated closely with a normal curve. Since these assumptions are not always valid, statisticians have developed several alternate techniques known as nonparametric tests. The models of such tests do not specify conditions about population parameters.

Certain assumptions, such as (1) observations are independent and (2) the variable being studied has underlying continuity, are associated with most nonparametric tests. However, …

A Survey In Mean Value Theorems, David A. Neuser May 1970

A Survey In Mean Value Theorems, David A. Neuser

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A variety of new mean value theorems are presented along with interesting proofs and generalizations of the standard theorems.

Three proofs are given for the ordinary Mean Value Theorem for derivatives, the third of which is interesting in that it is independent of of Rolle's Theorem. The Second Mean Value Theorem for derivatives is generalized, with the use of determinants, to three functions and also generalized in terms of n-th order derivatives.

Observing that under certain conditions the tangent line to the curve of a differentiable function passes through the initial point, we find a new type of mean value …

A Fortran List Processor (Flip), Karl A. Fugal May 1970

A Fortran List Processor (Flip), Karl A. Fugal

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A series of Basic Assembler Language subroutines were developed and made available to the FORTRAN IV language processor which makes list processing possible in a flexible and easily understood way.

The subroutine will create and maintain list structures in the computer's core storage. The subroutines are sufficiently general to permit FORTRAN programmers to tailor list processing routines to their own individual requirements. List structure sizes are limited only by the amount of core storage available.

A Kinetic Approach To The Inactivation Of Zinc By Various Soil Constituents, Shingara S. Sandhu May 1970

A Kinetic Approach To The Inactivation Of Zinc By Various Soil Constituents, Shingara S. Sandhu

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The adsorption reaction of zinc onto prochlorite, pyroxene, and biotite minerals, from dilute solution (water) was studied under isothermal conditions by agitated nonflow experiment method. The equilibrium concentration of zinc in the solution was determined both by radioactive tracer technique and adsorption spectrophotometer methods. The data were collected at three temperatures.

The data were treated by the equation:

∂θ/∂t = k1(1-θ)C - k-1θ

where θ is the fraction of total surface coverage and C is the equilibrium concentration of zinc in solution, k1 and k-1 are the rate constants for the adsorption and reverse …

Areal And Temporal Variations In Developmental Phases Of Syringa Vulgaris L. Throughout The Western United States, Joseph Michael Caprio May 1970

Areal And Temporal Variations In Developmental Phases Of Syringa Vulgaris L. Throughout The Western United States, Joseph Michael Caprio

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This paper presents the results of the analysis of 10 years of information 1957-1966 on three phases-- begin, peak and end bloom-- of the purple common lilac (Syringa vulgaris L.) using data recorded at approximately 1,000 locations throughout the Western Region of the United States.

The pattern of geographical advance of the various bloom phases is determined by both a manual mapping procedure developed by the author and by standard statistical methods. Manually drawn isophanes for the various elevations for begin bloom phase are based entirely upon the first 5 years of record, 1957-1961. A Zones of Adjustment map to …

Bayesian Estimate Of System Reliability, Naresh Shah May 1970

Bayesian Estimate Of System Reliability, Naresh Shah

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

A Bayesian estimate of reliability for each component in the system of n-components, each exponentially distributed, is developed which utilizes the basic notion of loss in estimation theory. Here we assume that each component is independently distributed. In reliability estimation, the loss associated with overestimation is usually greater than the loss associated with underestimation; and hence loss function can be a very useful tool. The prior distribution and loss function of reliability considered in this paper are flexible to be compatible with other situations in which reliability estimates are required. When the loss function is symmetric and no prior information …

Thermal Requirements To Protect Aquatic Life, Clarence M. Tarzwell May 1970

Thermal Requirements To Protect Aquatic Life, Clarence M. Tarzwell

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Water temperatures affect aquatic organisms in a number of ways, both directly and indirectly. Some of the latter effects are quite subtle. High temperatures can have direct lethal effects but sublethal levels operating over long periods can be just as harmful through delayed lethal effects and the production of nonlethal stresses which eventually result in changes in the population, reduced growth or reproduction, and the lowering of resistance to parasites, dis ease, and competitors. Temperature, in combination with certain other factors such as day length, influences re producing processes. High water temperatures may stimulate or retard migration, spawning, feeding, and …

Magnesium Ion Inhibition Of Calcium Carbonate Precipitation And Its Relation To Water Quality, John J. Hassett May 1970

Magnesium Ion Inhibition Of Calcium Carbonate Precipitation And Its Relation To Water Quality, John J. Hassett

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The effect of Mg++ ion on the solubility of calcium carbonate was determined using P. K. Weyls "carbonate saturometer."

The amount of calcium carbonate precipitated or dissolved was measured for five series of waters when equilibrated with solid carbonate.

It was found that the effect of Mg++ ion on solubility depend upon the nature of the solid phase: surface area, coprecipitated Mg++, minerology, etc.

Pure low area calcite showed an increase in solubility which could be explained by ion-pair formation, while its other carbonates departed from this behavior.

Transpiration And Dry Matter Response To Atmospheric Humidity, Matric Suction, And Fertility, Gordon Edgar Warrington May 1970

Transpiration And Dry Matter Response To Atmospheric Humidity, Matric Suction, And Fertility, Gordon Edgar Warrington

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Growth chamber studies showed that a relationship exists between transpiration and dry matter production of spring wheat (Tritiaum Aestivum L. var . Thatcher). A temperature of 27 C for a 16-hour day,and 21 C at night were used throughout the experiment. Relative humidities (RH) of 12, 25, 71, and 83 percent and matric suctions of 1, 3, and 9 bars were used a l ong with six fertility levels and a 20-day growing period. An equation was developed from previous equations by De Wit and Arkley to describe the transpiration ratio (Tr = mass of water transpired/mass of dry …

A Dialyzable Phospholipid Renin Inhibitor, Donna L. Webber May 1970

A Dialyzable Phospholipid Renin Inhibitor, Donna L. Webber

Senior Scholar Papers

Crude renin preparations from steer kidneys were incubated with Cd2+ and with Zn2+ elevation of renin activity resulted in both preparations. Analyses of each preparation against Tris-saline, and finally EDTA, removed the cations; however, renin activity remained elevated. An indirect activation of Renin by Cd2+ and, to a lesser extent, Zn2+, was thus demonstrated. Removal of the cations by Tris-saline and DTA-dialyses was suspected to involve the loss by dialysis of a renin inhibitor. An isolation technique for a proposed phospholipid renin inhibitor similar to bovine phosphatidylserine, reported by another laboratory, was thought to be unnecessarily arduous due to the …

Model For Bathtub-Shaped Hazard Rate: Monte Carlo Study, Glen S. Leithead May 1970

Model For Bathtub-Shaped Hazard Rate: Monte Carlo Study, Glen S. Leithead

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A new model developed for the entire bathtub-shaped hazard rate curve has been evaluated as to its usefulness as a method of reliability estimation. The model is of the form:

F(t) = 1 - exp - (ϴ1tL + ϴ2t + ϴ3tM)

where "L" and "M" were assumed known.

The estimate of reliability obtained from the new model was compared with the traditional restricted sample estimate for four different time intervals and was found to have less bias and variance for all time points.

This was a monte carlo study and the …

A Report On The Statistical Properties Of The Coefficient Of Variation And Some Applications, Howard P. Irvin May 1970

A Report On The Statistical Properties Of The Coefficient Of Variation And Some Applications, Howard P. Irvin

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Examples from four disciplines were used to introduce the coefficient of variation which was considered to have considerable usage and application in solving Quality Control and Reliability problems.

The statistical properties were found in the statistical literature and are presented, namely, the mean and the variance of the coefficient of variation. The cumulative probability function was determined by two approximate methods and by using the noncentral t distribution. A graphical method to determine approximate confidence intervals and a method to determine if the coefficients of variation from two samples were significantly different from each other are also provided (with examples). …
