U.S. Flag Merchant Vessels For The Future: Many Requirements For A Limited Resource, Donald R. Ditko May 1983

U.S. Flag Merchant Vessels For The Future: Many Requirements For A Limited Resource, Donald R. Ditko

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Decline in military useful ships is one indication of the general decline in the U.S. merchant marine since the massive Liberty and Victory programs of World War II. As the statistics in Part II will show, the U.S. flag merchant marine is facing possible nonexistence if a resurgence is not realized within this decade. Numbers of ships is only a small part of a complicated problem, however. A more serious question is the idea of a militarily useful hull.

Nothing Succeeds Like Succession: Ecology And The Human Lot, James A. Macmahon May 1983

Nothing Succeeds Like Succession: Ecology And The Human Lot, James A. Macmahon

Faculty Honor Lectures

An Honor Lecture provides a rare opportunity for me as a scientist. First, I have the chance to share, and in a sense to justify, my chosen and cherished discipline, ecology, before an eclectic audience. Second, I have a reason to consider my profession in a broader perspective than I normally do, given the pressures of day-to-day teaching, of grantsmanship, and of acting the role of stern taskmaster to my graduate students. I relish the opportunity to dabble, with an ecological perspective, in history, in philosophy, and in other areas. First, I will discuss my discipline in the context of …

Greedy And Optimal Paths In A Weighted Graph Without Circuits And Applications To A Class Of Optimization Problems On Finite Posets, Irinel C. Dragan May 1983

Greedy And Optimal Paths In A Weighted Graph Without Circuits And Applications To A Class Of Optimization Problems On Finite Posets, Irinel C. Dragan

Mathematics Technical Papers

In several recent papers B. Korte and L. Lovasz considered a mathematical structure called a simple language on which a greedy algorithm can operate (see [31,J41, OD. The concept of greedoid has been defined by relaxing an axiom and strengthening an other axiom from the definition of the matroid. Under some constraints imposed to the objective function of a combinatorial optimization problem on a greedoid, the greedy algorithm provides an efficient method for solving the problem. An algorithmic characterization of the greedoids, similar to that of the matroids, was further searched. The effort has been justified-by several examples of combinatorial …

Hydraulic Model Study Of Hyrum Dam Auxiliary Labyrinth Spillway, Kathleen L. Houston, U.S. Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Reclamation, Division Of Research, Hydraulics Branch

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The updated IDF (inflow design flood) for Hyrum Reservoir could not be passed with the existing hydraulic structures. The labyrinth was the most economical alternative for an auxiliary spillway. The labyrinth spillway, a series of trapezoidal shapes in plan form, would provide the necessary spillway length and capacity within a comparatively small width. The spillway configuration was based on design curves developed in the Bureau of Reclamation Hydraulic Laboratory.

The 1:30 scale model included the upstream approach channel, the labyrinth spillway, and a transition section leading to a long sloping chute. The model confirmed the maximum discharge of the spillway …

This research has focused on the sensitized photoisomerization step of a solar energy storage system based on the interconversion of norbornadiene (NBD) and quadricyclane (Q). Sensitizers studied in the photoisomerization were arylphosphine complexes of copper(I) halides [(Ph3P)3CuX, (MePh2P)3CuX, (DIPHOS)CuCl; X = Cl, Br, I and DIPHOS = Ph2P(CH2)2PPh2]. The lowest electronic excited state of the complexes can be an effective triplet energy sensitizer as evidenced by a maximum quantum yield of 1.0 with (MePh2P)3CuX. The sensitization mechanism of the L …

Correction Of Bias In Estimating Autocovariance Function, Len-Hong Wu May 1983

Correction Of Bias In Estimating Autocovariance Function, Len-Hong Wu

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this thesis was to evaluate a method for reducing the bias of estimation for autocovariance estimators. Two methods are compared, one is the standard method and the other is an adjustment method. The Monte Carlo method is used within comparison.

The bias and the mean squared error of the estimated autocovariance is computed for several time series models and two variations of the adjustment method of estimation. The results indicate some improvement in bias and mean squared error for the new method.

An Interval Newton Method, E R. Hansen, R I. Greenberg May 1983

An Interval Newton Method, E R. Hansen, R I. Greenberg

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

We introduce an interval Newton method for bounding solutions of systems of nonlinear equations. It entails three subalgorithms. The first is a Gauss-Seidel-type step. The second is a real (noninterval) Newton iteration. The third solves the linearized equations by elimination. We explain why each subalgorithm is desirable and how they fit together to provide solutions in as little as one-third or one-quarter the time required by Krawczyk's method [7] in our implementations.

Studies In Peptide Synthesis Towards The Lanthionine Analog Of Des-N-Tetramethyl Triostin A, Ganesh Devdas Kini May 1983

Studies In Peptide Synthesis Towards The Lanthionine Analog Of Des-N-Tetramethyl Triostin A, Ganesh Devdas Kini

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Studies have been carried out towards the synthesis of bicyclic octadidepsipeptide lanthionine 4, an analog of des-N-tetramethyl triostin A. Starting with a symmetrical lanthionine unit 5 (R1, R3 = Me; R2, R4 = t-butyloxycarbonyl), synthesized from the corresponding cystine by contraction with hexaethylphosphorus triamide, linear octadidepsipeptides 29 and 32 were synthesized.

Attempted cyclizations of 29 and 32 to the bicyclic octapeptide were unsuccessful.

The failure of the symmetrical approach to 4 prompted the synthesis of an unsymmetrical lanthionine unit with appropriate compatible protecting groups. Attempts to synthesize unsymmetrical lanthionines by nucleophilic displacement on …

Cell-Mediated Immunity Of The Dog Lung And Effects Of Inhaled 239puo2 Or Pulmonary Tumors, Jennifer Baker Galvin May 1983

Cell-Mediated Immunity Of The Dog Lung And Effects Of Inhaled 239puo2 Or Pulmonary Tumors, Jennifer Baker Galvin

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Cell-mediated immunity (CMI) in the lung has not been well characterized due to the lack of applicable tests. A major objective was to define pulmonary CMI serially in immunized and control lung lobes using the leukocyte procoagulant (LPCA) assay in young adult dogs. This was compared to a standard, but less reproducible CMI assay, macrophage migration inhibition facet (MIF). The CMI response, as measured by the LPCA assay, peaked in the blood 7 days after lung immunization. The pulmonary CMI response measured with cells obtained by bronchial lavage from the immunized and control lung lobes peaked at 9 to 12 …

Analytical Pyrolysis Of Eastern Oil Shales, Lizbeth Sturgeon May 1983

Analytical Pyrolysis Of Eastern Oil Shales, Lizbeth Sturgeon

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The Sunbury shale and the Cleveland member of the Ohio shale were studied utilizing the technique of analytical pyrolysis (pyrolysis gas chromatography). The effects of ceiling temperature, heating rate, and pyrolysis interval on the pyrolysis yield and relative product distribution for these eastern oil shales were observed. Carefully monitored pyrolysis of the shale allows separation of high and low volatile components and measurement of the relative peak areas in the pyrogram provides the yield of the high and low volatile fractions. Linear temperature ramps of 5000, 2000, and 100°C per second were employed. Ceiling temperatures of 450°C to 950°C and …

Kinetic & Spectral Studies Of Copper(Ii)-4,4',4",4'"-Tetrasulfophthalocyanine In Aqueous Solution, Stephen Scholl May 1983

Kinetic & Spectral Studies Of Copper(Ii)-4,4',4",4'"-Tetrasulfophthalocyanine In Aqueous Solution, Stephen Scholl

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The monomer-dimer equilibrium of CuTSPC4- was examined by spectral methods in aqueous solution over a total dye concentration of 2 x 10-8M to 8 x 10-7M at 24°C. The value obtained for the dimerization constant, KD,was 1.1 x 107M-1 which is smaller than literature values. However, the discrepancy is not appreciable considering the differences in the methods used and the experimental conditions of the different solutions. Spectral measurements of the dimerization constant were made at only one temperature since the spectral changes were quite small when the temperature was varied. This observation …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The objectives of this research were to investigate the ecological importance of soil seed reserves and seed rain on regeneration of a good condition sagebrush-grass range vegetation after a wildfire and draw conclusions leading to better understanding and management of such ecosystems. Investigations were conducted for two successive years on a community where major plants were neither rhizomatous nor sprouting. In such cases soil seed reserves and seed rain have to be the main source of regeneration. In addition to monitoring soil seed reserves and seed rain, vegetation changes during the past two years and the historical conditions of the …

A Study Of Robustness Of Preliminary Tests In Conditionally Specified Regression Models, Chien-Pai Han May 1983

A Study Of Robustness Of Preliminary Tests In Conditionally Specified Regression Models, Chien-Pai Han

Mathematics Technical Papers

The selection of variables in regression analysis is usually done by using preliminary tests. When it is doubtful whether the regression coefficients of a set of variables are equal to zero or not, one may use a significance test. When the test rejects the null hypothesis, the set of variables is retained in the model otherwise the set is deleted from the model. The preliminary test is usually an F test based on normal theory. This paper examines the robustness of the preliminary test in model selection by a Monte Carlo study.

An Information Theoretic Approach To Incorporating Prior Information In Binomial Sampling, Paul Chiou, Danny D. Dyer May 1983

An Information Theoretic Approach To Incorporating Prior Information In Binomial Sampling, Paul Chiou, Danny D. Dyer

Mathematics Technical Papers

The incorporation of prior information about [see pdf for notation], where [see pdf for notation] is the success probability in a binomial sampling model, is an essential feature of Bayesian statistics. Methodology based on information theoretic concepts is introduced which (a) quantifies the amount of information provided by the sample data relative to that provided by the prior distribution and (b) allows for a ranking of prior distributions with respect to conservativeness, where conservatism refers to restraint of extraneous information about [see pdf for notation] which is embedded in any prior distribution. In effect,, the most conservative prior distribution from …

Disposal Of Household Wastewater In Soils Of High Stone Content (1977-1980), E. M. Rutledge, C. R. Mote, M. S. Hirsh, H. D. Scott, D. T. Mitchell

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Two experimental septic tank filter fields were constructed with built-in monitoring equipment in Nixa soils. These soils contain many chert fragments and a fragipan about 60 cm deep which restricts downward water movement and is the design-limiting feature. The standard filter field (76 cm deep) was built into the fragipan and the modified standard filter field (30 cm deep) was placed above it. During 30 months' observation, the modified standard performed better than the standard filter field. Maximum rise of effluent in the standard and modified standard came within 11 and 19 cm of the soil surface, respectively. Performance of …

Causes Of Localized Copper Corrosion In Drinking Water Supplies, R. A. Sims, R. W. Raible May 1983

Causes Of Localized Copper Corrosion In Drinking Water Supplies, R. A. Sims, R. W. Raible

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Excessive amounts of copper have been observed in drinking water at certain installations on Lake DeGray and at isolated locations in the Arkadelphia area of Arkansas. A study of these installations was conducted to determine the source of the copper contamination. The supply water was very low in copper and therefore dissolution of the copper plumbing caused by low water pH and long residence times was determined to be the most probable source.

Soviet Predatory Practices In The U. S. Liner Trades: Strategy And Prospects, Daniel D. Thompson Apr 1983

Soviet Predatory Practices In The U. S. Liner Trades: Strategy And Prospects, Daniel D. Thompson

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The impressive growth of the Soviet Merchant Marine during the past two decades. and its anticipated future expansion have given rise to questions concerning the likely future impact of that fleet on world shipping and the relative importance of maritime commerce to the Soviet Union itself. U.S. owners and regulatory bodies have, along with other Western owners and shipping bodies, consistently pointed an accusing finger at the Soviets for attempting to capture more than a fair share of general cargo tonnage in the world liner market. Charges of predatory Soviet rate cutting practices have been widely advertised by American operators …

Accidental Releases Of Sour Gas From Wells And Collection Pipelines In The Overthrust Belt: Calculating And Assessing Potential Health And Environmental Risks, D. W. Layton, R. T. Cederwall, Y. E. Ricker, J. H. Shinn, K. D. O'Banion Apr 1983

Accidental Releases Of Sour Gas From Wells And Collection Pipelines In The Overthrust Belt: Calculating And Assessing Potential Health And Environmental Risks, D. W. Layton, R. T. Cederwall, Y. E. Ricker, J. H. Shinn, K. D. O'Banion

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Parts of the Overthrust Belt of western Wyoming and adjoining areas in Utah and Idaho contain geologic formations with significant accumulations of oil and natural gas. Some of these formations, though, yield gas that is contaminated with toxic hydrogen sulfide. As a consequence, the development of these so-called sour-gas reservoirs requires special safety procedures and technologies in order to prevent accidental releases of gas to the atmosphere that could cause adverse occupational and public health effects. To improve the analysis and assessment of wells and collection pipelines completed on lands leased from the Federal Government, the Minerals Management Service, Onshore …
