Modified Weizsäcker Corrections In Thomas-Fermi Theories, Jerry Goodisman Jan 1970

Modified Weizsäcker Corrections In Thomas-Fermi Theories, Jerry Goodisman

Chemistry - All Scholarship

We consider theories in which a kinetic-energy correction (h2322m)[2] (=density) is added to the usual Thomas-Fermi term. A treatment based on the WKB method and expected to be valid for large r shows =1 here, as found experimentally. For small r, =1 is needed to give proper behavior of, but other arguments suggest that the Thomas-Fermi term be dropped here.

Modified Quantum-Statistical Calculations For Atomic Electron Densities, Jerry Goodisman Jan 1970

Modified Quantum-Statistical Calculations For Atomic Electron Densities, Jerry Goodisman

Chemistry - All Scholarship

We attempt to overcome one of the shortcomings in the Thomas-Fermi and related theories for atoms by connecting a quantum-mechanical electron density for the region near the nucleus to a density given by a statistical model. The joining may be done in a nonarbitrary manner: All parameters are determined. It suffices to use a very crude and easily calculated approximation to the density to start with, so the calculation is quite easy. The resulting electron density is in much better agreement with reality than that from the unmodified theories.

Annual Precipitation Regime Of Minnesota, Richard H. Skaggs Jan 1970

Annual Precipitation Regime Of Minnesota, Richard H. Skaggs

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Eigenvalues and eigenvectors computed on 30-year normals indicate an unusually high spatial homogeneity of annual precipitation curve shape in Minnesota. The generalized shape accounts for about 99 per cent of the observed variance and meshes well with the overall pattern of the central United States. Interesting deviations do occur, however. These deviations suggest fundamental questions about precipitation-causing processes which should be investigated in the future.

Hadamard Designs, Jennifer Seberry

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

In this paper it is shown that an Hadamard design with each letter repeated once and only once can exist for 2, 4 and 8 letters only. L.D. Baumert and Marshall Hall, Jr have found a design with four letters each repeated three times. Their design and the design on four letters each repeated once, found by J. Williamson, is the totality previously published.

U.S. Research On Whales, Robert L. Brownell Jr. Jan 1970

U.S. Research On Whales, Robert L. Brownell Jr.

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

The United States is a member of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) and thus shares responsibility with 13 other countries for conducting research on whales. In 1958, our research program was moved from La Jolla, California, to the Marine Mammal Biological Laboratory in Seattle under the direction of the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries (BCF), Department of Interior. This move consolidated the scientific staff, libraries, and facilities used for marine mammal research. The legislation that created the Bureau made this organization the one responsible for decisions regarding the use of whale resources.

The Standing Committee on Marine Mammals of the American …

How To Raise Pheasants Jan 1970

How To Raise Pheasants

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications

To raise pheasants, you will need about five square feet per bird in a covered pen. A 25-foot square will handle 125 chicks. However, the bigger the yard, the better, since these are wild birds and nervous. Overcrowding leads to feather-picking and cannibalism. It is important that the ground be clean to cut down disease and that there have been no chickens on it for at least two years.

Pheasant chicks need fresh air, sunshine, and lots of exercise to grow rapidly and develop into strong, vigorous birds that can survive .in the wild. Remember, you will be turning them …

Electrical Conductivity In Nh4Cl And Nd4Cl Single Crystals, Robert Fuller, F.W. Patten Jan 1970

Electrical Conductivity In Nh4Cl And Nd4Cl Single Crystals, Robert Fuller, F.W. Patten

Robert G. Fuller Publications

Electrical conductivity measurements are reported for normal and deuterated ammonium chloride single crystals in the temperature regions which characterize the pure and the impurity-dominated materials. We conclude from the data that conductivity in ammonium chloride is due to the formation of either cation or anion vacancies and a subsequent process controlled by a proton transfer. Our results are found to be consistent with a model proposed by Herrington and Staveley.

Metabolism Of 3-Iodotyrosine And 3,5-Diiodotyrosine By Thyroid Extracts, Shih-Ying Sun Jan 1970

Metabolism Of 3-Iodotyrosine And 3,5-Diiodotyrosine By Thyroid Extracts, Shih-Ying Sun

Masters Theses

"A porcine thyroid enzyme was extracted from thyroid tissue by homogenization and differential centrifugation. The enzyme was capable of metabolizing both 3-iodotyrosine and 3,5-diiodotyrosine. All of the thyroid subcellular particles produced a fluorescent compound when incubated with these substrates. When the 1,000 x g sediment was supplemented with the 48,000 x g supernatant a second compound was formed. The compound was UV absorbing and has been identified as either 3-iodo-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde or 3,5-diiodo-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde depending upon which substrate was used. The 1,000 x g sediment was solubilized with 1% Conoco 1012-6 detergent. The activating factor in the 48,000 x g supernatant was …

Application Of The Weiss Molecular Field Theory To The Lattice Of The B-Site Spinel, Wayne Edmund Holland Jan 1970

Application Of The Weiss Molecular Field Theory To The Lattice Of The B-Site Spinel, Wayne Edmund Holland

Masters Theses

"The Weiss molecular field theory has been applied to the lattice of the B-site spinel. The forms of the ordering temperatures and the asymptotic Curie temperature have been determined for a sixteen-sublattice model with collinear spins. The theory has been applied to the problem of determining the exchange integrals for systems of the form Aa₁₋ₓAbₓCr₂X₄ and ACr₂Xa4(1-y)Xb4y. The theoretical results have been compared to the experimental data for the systems Hg₁₋ₓCdₓCr₂S₄, Zn₁₋ₓCdₓCr₂Se₄, and CdCr₂S4(1-y)Se4y in an attempt to determine the exchange integrals"--Abstract, page ii.

Amino Acid Sequence Of An Iodotyrosyl-Containing Peptide Produced By Tryptic Digestion Of Thyroglobulin, Pai-Chun Chiang Jan 1970

Amino Acid Sequence Of An Iodotyrosyl-Containing Peptide Produced By Tryptic Digestion Of Thyroglobulin, Pai-Chun Chiang

Masters Theses

"Thyroglobulin was digested with trypsin. An iodotyrosyl-containing peptide was isolated from tryptic digests by a combination of electrophoresis and paper chromatography. The amino acid sequence of this peptide was determined by applying the Edman degradation and by using the proteolytic enzyme, carboxypeptidase A. The sequence of this peptide is: NH₂-Ala-Ile(Leu)-Ala-Ser-Phe-Gly-Asp-Tyr-Glu-Phe-COOH The importance of the position of the tyrosyl residue which is iodinated to form monoiodotyrosine (MIT) , diiodotyrosine (DIT) , and thyroxine (T₄) is considered in connection with the structure-activity relationship of the protein"--Abstract, page ii.

The Semibullvalene Question: A Semi-Empirical Molecular Orbital And Bond Energy Approach, Shiow Yeh Lee Jan 1970

The Semibullvalene Question: A Semi-Empirical Molecular Orbital And Bond Energy Approach, Shiow Yeh Lee

Masters Theses

"Semi-empirical molecular orbital calculations of the Extended Ruckel and MIND0/1 type have been performed on semibullvalene and the supposed transition state for its degenerate [3,3] sigmatropic rearrangement. The results have been coupled with bond energy calculations to ascertain whether semibullvalene is homo-aromatic or is undergoing a rearrangement of exceedingly low activation energy. A preponderance of the resulting data suggests that semibullvalene is homo-aromatic"--Abstract, page ii.

Textural Properties, Provenance, And Environments Of Formation Of The "Rimrock" Sandstone Of The Filled Sinkholes Northeast Of Rolla, Missouri, Upendra Jayantilal Parikh Jan 1970

Textural Properties, Provenance, And Environments Of Formation Of The "Rimrock" Sandstone Of The Filled Sinkholes Northeast Of Rolla, Missouri, Upendra Jayantilal Parikh

Masters Theses

"Filled sinkholes have long been known to occur in the carbonate rocks of Missouri. A sandstone unit occurs in these sinkholes at their outer margin, forming a rim, and is called here the rimrock sandstone. Samples of rimrock sandstone, from an area northeast of Rolla, Missouri were studied. Grain size, heavy mineral and. thin section analyses of these samples were carried out. Size analysis data suggest that, texturally, the rimrock sandstone is similar to the St. Peter sandstone and that this formation could have supplied sands for the formation of rimrock. Field evidences suggest that continental conditions prevailed at the …

The Radial Distribution Curve Of "Anomalous" Water By X-Ray Diffraction, Jerome Dechelette Jan 1970

The Radial Distribution Curve Of "Anomalous" Water By X-Ray Diffraction, Jerome Dechelette

Masters Theses

"Amorphous and liquid samples, believed to be "anomalous" water were studied by X-ray diffraction. A diffusion ring, characteristic of liquids and glass was observed at Θ =10.5º. For purposes of comparison an X-ray diffraction pattern was obtained for pure water under nearly identical conditions. By means of a microdensitometer, X-ray intensity curves were prepared from the diffraction patterns and corrected for absorption and polarization. From the Fourier transform of the intensities, we obtained the radial distribution curves. The radial distribution curve for water, obtained in previous work, shows an initial peak at 2.9Å. This peak is due to the nearest …

A Study Of The Oxygen Exchange Between Chromate Ion And Water, James Hsiao-Hsin Chiang Jan 1970

A Study Of The Oxygen Exchange Between Chromate Ion And Water, James Hsiao-Hsin Chiang

Masters Theses

"The kinetics of the isotopic exchange reaction between O¹⁸-enriched chromate ion and solvent water have been measured as a function of pH and chromate ion concentration. The exchange kinetics can be explained in terms of the dimerization equilibria HCrO + Cr₂O[subscript 7 with double dash above] [double arrows] Cr₂O[subscript 7 with double dash above] + OH⁻ and 2HCrO [double arrows] Cr₂O[subscript 7 with double dash above] + H₂O except at high pH, where it is independent of pH. Rate constants at 30ºC for the reactions of the dimerization equilibria and the first order reaction at the high pH …

Evaluation And Application Of Dye Tracers In Karst Terrain For Determining Aquifer Characteristics, Milton Frank Bradley Jan 1970

Evaluation And Application Of Dye Tracers In Karst Terrain For Determining Aquifer Characteristics, Milton Frank Bradley

Masters Theses

"As ground water becomes increasingly important as a source of water in the United States, reliable information on the hydrological characteristics of carbonate aquifers must be obtained in order to develop them intelligently. Various tracers have been used in the past to determine if two or more points are connected hydrologically. Today there exists a number of excellent dye tracers and tracer methods have been developed in unconsolidated and clastic aquifers for determining hydrological characteristics. This paper reviews the various dye tracers and methods which might be applied in a carbonate karst terrain using wells as injection and sampling points. …

Petrology And Diagenesis Of The Cyclic Maquoketa Formation (Upper Ordovician) Pike County, Missouri, Edwin Carl Kettenbrink Jr. Jan 1970

Petrology And Diagenesis Of The Cyclic Maquoketa Formation (Upper Ordovician) Pike County, Missouri, Edwin Carl Kettenbrink Jr.

Masters Theses

"The Maquoketa Formation (Upper Ordovician-Cincinnatian Series) has been extensively studied for over one hundred years, but a petrographic study of its cyclic lithologies has been neglected. The following six distinct Maquoketa lithologies have been recognized in this study in Pike County, Missouri: 1) phosphatic biosparite, 2) phosphorite, 3) micrite-microsparite, 4) dolomitic shale, 5) dolomitic marlstone, and 6) dolomitic quartz siltstone. Three cycle types are present in the Maquoketa. They are expressed as thin beds (1-20 inches) of alternating micrite-shale, micrite-marlstone, and shale-siltstone. Contacts between different lithologies are sharp, indicating a primary sedimentological origin for the cycles. Precisely what mechanism was …

Optical Phenomena In Diatoms, Richard B. Hoover, Miriam J. Hoover Jan 1970

Optical Phenomena In Diatoms, Richard B. Hoover, Miriam J. Hoover

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Diatoms are unicellular algae which fabricate siliceous shells that are frequently marked with intricate ornamentations and patterns. The nature and characteristics of the siliceous shells provide a basis for diatom taxonomy and give rise to a number of interesting and colorful optical phenomena. This paper presents the results of investigations of diffraction phenomena, complementary color behavior, Rayleigh scattering and optical activity in diatoms.

Apparatus For Dielectric Constant Measurements And Measurements For Water-Methanol Mixtures, James O. Wear Jan 1970

Apparatus For Dielectric Constant Measurements And Measurements For Water-Methanol Mixtures, James O. Wear

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A system for measuring dielectric constants has been constructed using a Sargent Oscillometer and an air bath for temperature control. The design and construction of the air bath as well as the temperature control achieved with it are described. The overall performance of the system including a computer program for forming the calculations is described. The system is one that requires calibration using two or more standard solvents and is good for both conducting and non-conducting liquids. Data are presented for water-methanol mixtures at 25 degrees with several points near pure methanol and also near pure water

Factors Affecting Relocation In Response To Reservoir Development, Rabel J. Burdge, Richard L. Ludtke Jan 1970

Factors Affecting Relocation In Response To Reservoir Development, Rabel J. Burdge, Richard L. Ludtke

KWRRI Research Reports

The focus of this paper is on the question of how rural people anticipate forced moves as a result of flood control projects and how they change their life in accepting separation from familiar surroundings.

A model of faced migration is presented which sees the variables of socioeconomic status, knowledge of reservoir projects, vested interests and the degree of identification with place of affected persons as producing differential apprehension over moving. Differential apprehension is then seen as producing different attitudes toward the project which will influence the type of migration plans.

To test this model of forced migration, data were …

Evaluation Of The Social Impact Of Reservoir Construction On The Residential Plans Of Displaced Persons In Kentucky And Ohio, Richard L. Ludtke, Rabel J. Burdge Jan 1970

Evaluation Of The Social Impact Of Reservoir Construction On The Residential Plans Of Displaced Persons In Kentucky And Ohio, Richard L. Ludtke, Rabel J. Burdge

KWRRI Research Reports

The states of Kentucky and Ohio have numerous reservoir projects at various stages of planning and construction. Each of the projects produces substantial social impact for the residents of the area and particularly for those persons affected by a loss of property and homes. This impact is not uniform in that people respond differently to displacement and the methods of adjusting relocation are known to differ among people.

This research was initiated to develop and test a model for explaining migration under such conditions. The model includes a consideration of people's potential for transferring existing statuses to new residences, the …

Rbe, Let, And ZΑ, Robert Katz Jan 1970

Rbe, Let, And Z/ΒΑ, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

A call has been issued by Turner and Hollister in this journal for nomination of a suitable combination of charge and velocity to replace LET. It is the purpose of this communication to point out that no single combination of these variables can fully characterize track effects, as these are affected by the ratio of the range rm of the delta ray of maximum energy to the radius a0 of the sensitive volume.

A Brief Study Of Topology, Mary Beth Mangrum Jan 1970

A Brief Study Of Topology, Mary Beth Mangrum

Honors Theses

Topology is the study of topological properties of figures -- those properties which do not change under "elastic" motion. It is generally divided into two branches: set topology and algebraic topology. Set topology discusses the nature of a topological space, the properties of sets of points, the definitions of limits and continuity, the special properties of metric spaces, and questions concerning separation and connectedness. Algebraic topology deals with groups which are defined on a space, their structure and invariants.

A Special Studies Paper On The General Mathematics Requirements At Ouachita Baptist University, Linda Gamble Jan 1970

A Special Studies Paper On The General Mathematics Requirements At Ouachita Baptist University, Linda Gamble

Honors Theses

The object of this paper has been to study the opinions of graduates and present students about the required math hours (presently three hours) at Ouachita Baptist University. It has formerly been my opinion that this may be insufficient math background for many of our students going out seeking jobs. Many times the student, while still in college does not realize he may need more math but it may show up on graduate tests, in his occupational work, or personal matters such as income tax calculations, bookkeeping, or budgeting.

To compile the opinions of students on this subject a form …
