A Special Studies Paper On Mathematics In Computer Programing, Linda Gamble Jan 1970

A Special Studies Paper On Mathematics In Computer Programing, Linda Gamble

Honors Theses

The profession of programing has existed for two decades or longer. Computer programing and the organization of computer analysis have gone beyond the reach of careful clerks with high school education. There is a growing demand for persons who are competent researchers, experienced in the use of multivariate methods, and skilled as computer users and programers. Mathematics and engineering predominate. The programer should have a knowledge of mathematics and a familiarity with computer hardware and must understand the content of the problem to be solved.

Petrography Of Xenolith Zones In The Black Face-Ames Plutons, Western San Juan Mountains, Colorado, Richard B. Moore Jan 1970

Petrography Of Xenolith Zones In The Black Face-Ames Plutons, Western San Juan Mountains, Colorado, Richard B. Moore

Theses and Dissertations

The middle to late Tertiary Black Face-Ames plutons are irregularly-shaped, intrusive bodies located in the San Miguel Mountains of southwestern Colorado. The Ames pluton is generally a composite sill; the Black Face pluton is an asymmetric laccol1th. The two plutons are probably joined at depth, and together they form a crudely annular outcrop pattern, open toward the west. The principal rock type within the plutons is granodiorite porphyry, although part of the Ames pluton consists of porphyritic rhyodacite.

Two major zones of xenoliths of Precambrian rock occur within the Black Face-Ames plutons; scattered xenoliths are found at widely separated locations. …

Molluscan Paleontology Of The Pierre Shale (Upper Cretaceous), Bowman County, North Dakota, Kenneth F. Brinster

Theses and Dissertations

The Pierre Shale of Campanian and Early Maestrichtian age in Bowman County, southwestern North Dakota, has an abundant molluscan fauna and 51 species are described herein. The 51 species consist of 1 species of scaphopod, 13 species in 11 genera of gastropods, 24 species' in 17 genera of bivalves, and 13 species in 6 genera of cephalopods.

The stratigraphy of the Pierre Shale in Bowman County was not compiled into a composite section because of the homogeneity of the shale, the lack of distinctive lithologic units, and the slumped condition of the shale. However, the biostratigraphic position of the Bowman …

Surficial Lineaments And Their Structural Implications In The Williston Basin, Kirth Kirth Erickson Jan 1970

Surficial Lineaments And Their Structural Implications In The Williston Basin, Kirth Kirth Erickson

Theses and Dissertations

Lineaments of apparent geostructural origin are observable on air photos of the Williston basin. The pattern formed by these lineaments has the appearance of a broad system of interconnecting wrench faults such as occur on the adjacent Canadian shield. On this basis it is hypothesized that a broad system of left-lateral wrench faults may underlie the Williston basin region and possibly the entire continental foreland structural province.

Structures in the Williston basin are readily adaptable to this interpretation. The Nessen anticline appears to consist of a north-south realignment of a N. 40° E.- trending Precambrian high which was segmented by …

Auger Electrons From Argon With Energies 150-210 Ev Produced By H+ And H2 Impacts, D. J. Volz, M. Eugene Rudd Jan 1970

Auger Electrons From Argon With Energies 150-210 Ev Produced By H+ And H2 Impacts, D. J. Volz, M. Eugene Rudd

M. Eugene Rudd Publications

Secondary electrons in the energy range 150-210 eV produced by 125-300-keV H+ and H2+ impacts on argon gas are measured as a function of their energy and angle of emission. Discrete line spectra are due to Auger transitions from L2 and L3 vacancy states as well as satellite transitions from multivacancy states. The widths, energies, and branching ratios of the L2 and L3 vacancy states are presented. Widths of these states are appreciably greater than those obtained with electron impact excitation. This can be attributed to the recoil velocities of the target atom …

Experimental Evidence For The Mechanism Of Charge Transfer Into Continuum States, G. B. Crooks, M. Eugene Rudd Jan 1970

Experimental Evidence For The Mechanism Of Charge Transfer Into Continuum States, G. B. Crooks, M. Eugene Rudd

M. Eugene Rudd Publications

We have observed a prominent peak in the energy spectrum of electrons ejected in the forward direction from helium bombarded by protons ranging in energy from 100 to 300 keV. The peak occurs at an ejected-electron velocity equal to the velocity of the incident proton. The experimental results verify the existence of the mechanism of charge transfer into continuum states of the incident ion.

Shell Source Burning Stars With Highly Condensed Cores, S. Refsdal, A. Weigert Jan 1970

Shell Source Burning Stars With Highly Condensed Cores, S. Refsdal, A. Weigert

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Simple analytical relations are derived - similar to the homology relations for homogeneous stam - which describe the behaviour of shell source burning models with highly condensed cores. Many features which are known from evolutionary calculations (and partly &om observations) of such stars can be understood as coming essentially from the increase of the mass M6 of the core.

Ground-State Wave Function Of Shallow Donors In Uniaxially Stressed Silicon: Piezohyperfine Constants Determined By Electron-Nuclear Double Resonance, Edward B. (Boyd) Hale, Theodore G. Castner Jan 1970

Ground-State Wave Function Of Shallow Donors In Uniaxially Stressed Silicon: Piezohyperfine Constants Determined By Electron-Nuclear Double Resonance, Edward B. (Boyd) Hale, Theodore G. Castner

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Stress-induced changes in the ENDOR spectra of a shallow donor electron interacting with various Si29 nuclei neighboring the donor have been experimentally and theoretically investigated. For each of the three measured donors - As, P, and Sb - the compressional, uniaxial stress was applied along the [001] axis and its magnitude corresponded to strains up to 10-3. To describe the observed linear and quadratic shifts and splitting's of the lines in an ENDOR shell, we have defined a set of piezo hyperfine constants. One piezo hyperfine constant was measured for each axis-class shell; three independent piezo hyperfine constants were measured …

Modified Method Of Linear Associative Retrieval, James Donald Byrd Jan 1970

Modified Method Of Linear Associative Retrieval, James Donald Byrd

Masters Theses

"It is becoming increasingly important for those in decision making positions to have the most current and accurate data possible as related to their particular needs. Although there are several well known retrieval techniques available an intensified effort is being made at many installations to provide a retrieval system that will supply the demands of their own needs. One well known approach to the solution of information retrieval is linear associative retrieval. The solution that has been proposed requires several computer runs on some requests and therefore is very time consuming. The author has implemented a method to eliminate unnecessary …

Enhanced Evaporation Of Water Droplets Due To Surface Contamination, Robert Bernard Hughes Jan 1970

Enhanced Evaporation Of Water Droplets Due To Surface Contamination, Robert Bernard Hughes

Masters Theses

"Experimental evidence for enhanced evaporation of small (3-9 µ radius) water droplets are presented. Both "pure" droplets and droplets contaminated with surface active materials fell into air of known relative humidity (96-99 per cent) at an ambient temperature of 29.9C and evaporated. The rates of evaporation were determined by photographing the evaporating drops, measuring the distance a drop fell during a fixed time interval, and applying Stokes law. The contaminated droplets exhibited a rate of evaporation 1.8µ² sec⁻¹ faster than "pure" drops. This can be compared with rates for pure drops of 1.9 and 5.7µ² sec⁻¹ at 0.1 and 0.3C …

Analysis Of Solutions For Surface Active Agents, Henry H. Bauer Jan 1970

Analysis Of Solutions For Surface Active Agents, Henry H. Bauer

KWRRI Research Reports

The objective of this study was to obtain a better understanding of the behavior of surfactants in aqueous solutions at electrodes. With this understanding it should be possible to design electrochemical methods for the detection, identification, and quantitative determination of such substances. This study was concerned primarily with the influence of extraneous salts on the behavior of surface active agents when these are examined by the electrochemical technique known as tensammetry.

The tensammetric method consists essentially of the measurement of the electrical impedance of an electrochemical cell. This impedance is characteristically increased in the presence of surfactants at those potentials …

An Evaluation Of Relationships Between Streamflow Patterns And Watershed Characteristics Through The Use Of Opset, L. Douglas James, William O. Thompson, Glendon Allen Ross, Earnest Y. Liou Jan 1970

An Evaluation Of Relationships Between Streamflow Patterns And Watershed Characteristics Through The Use Of Opset, L. Douglas James, William O. Thompson, Glendon Allen Ross, Earnest Y. Liou

KWRRI Research Reports

Selection among alternative flood control measures would be better informed if better information could be obtained on the marginal change in flood hazard associated with land use and other changes in the tributary watershed. Hydrologic modeling is the most promising approach to answering this question; however, the use of existing models is hampered by the absence of information correlating model parameters with physical characteristics of the watershed.

To deal with this situation, a method was developed for estimating the parameter values for the Stanford Watershed Model which best match recorded with simulated streamflows. Physical characteristics were measured for 17 rural …

Part I - Controlling The Soil Moisture Environment Of Transpiring Plants, Part Ii - Prediction Of Leaf Temperature Under Natural Atmospheric Conditions, Charles T. Haan, Billy J. Barfield, Robert Edling Jan 1970

Part I - Controlling The Soil Moisture Environment Of Transpiring Plants, Part Ii - Prediction Of Leaf Temperature Under Natural Atmospheric Conditions, Charles T. Haan, Billy J. Barfield, Robert Edling

KWRRI Research Reports

Part I

A technique for controlling the soil moisture potential in the root zone of transpiring plants was developed. The method uses the principles of unsaturated flow through a porous media to develop the desired moisture potential. In the case of non-steady state transpiration, the maximum possible fluctuation in the soil moisture potential can be determined by the techniques presented.

Part II

Two implicit leaf temperature prediction equations were derived from the energy balance approach. The equations define sensible and latent heat transfer from a plant population as a two step process:

  1. Transfer between the plant leaf and the canopy …

Anticipations Of Change: A Socio-Economic Description Of A Kentucky County Before Reservoir Construction, Charles Robert Smith Jan 1970

Anticipations Of Change: A Socio-Economic Description Of A Kentucky County Before Reservoir Construction, Charles Robert Smith

KWRRI Research Reports

In the past the construction of large reservoirs in the United States has been evaluated largely in terms of the economic benefit they bring to the area where they are constructed and to the nation. Where human populations are involved, however, a host of social changes occur, many of which fundamentally alter the way of life of a people.

This report is part of a larger study which aims at analyzing the social costs and benefits of reservoir construction. The project is long range in that studies are to be carried out before, during, and after construction. This report concentrates …

Opset Program For Computerized Selection Of Watershed Parameter Values For The Stanford Watershed Model, Earnest Yuan-Shang Liou, L. Douglas James Jan 1970

Opset Program For Computerized Selection Of Watershed Parameter Values For The Stanford Watershed Model, Earnest Yuan-Shang Liou, L. Douglas James

KWRRI Research Reports

The advent of high-speed electronic computer made it possible to model complex hydrologic processes by mathematical expressions and thereby simulate streamflows from climatological data. The most widely used program is the Stanford Watershed Model, a digital parametric model of the land phase of the hydrologic cycle based on moisture accounting processes. It can be used to simulate annual or longer flow sequences at hourly time intervals. Due to its capability of simulating historical streamflows from recorded climatological data, it has a great potential in the planning and design of water resources systems. However, widespread use of the Stanford Watershed Model …

The Economic Value Of Natural Areas For Recreational Hunting, Kenneth Gene Holbrook Jan 1970

The Economic Value Of Natural Areas For Recreational Hunting, Kenneth Gene Holbrook

KWRRI Research Reports

The pressures of population growth, urbanization, and improved transportation are diminishing the availability of quality naturalistic sites for recreation while at the same time producing greater demands for their use. One cause contributing to the reduction in acreage in naturalistic areas is the construction of reservoirs. The recreational hunting value of the naturalistic area to be inundated should be considered as a negative consequence in the economic evaluation of a proposed reservoir site.

This study utilized hunting data collected by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, from the 120 Kentucky counties to estimate the economic, value of the average …

The Stanford Watershed Model: The Correlation Of Parameter Values Selected By A Computerized Procedure With Measurable Physical Characteristics Of The Watershed, Part 2, Glendon Allen Ross Jan 1970

The Stanford Watershed Model: The Correlation Of Parameter Values Selected By A Computerized Procedure With Measurable Physical Characteristics Of The Watershed, Part 2, Glendon Allen Ross

KWRRI Research Reports

Soundly planned water resources development requires a knowledge of streamflow magnitudes and time patterns. Where recorded information is unavailable, water resources project design can be greatly improved by streamflow simulation.

This study is devoted to describing the application of a self-calibrating version of the Stanford Watershed Model to 17 rural Kentucky watersheds and two urbanizing watersheds. The required data for this version (OPSET) is tabulated and the data collection process is described. The watershed parameter values estimated by OPSET and independent numerical estimates of physical watershed characteristics are tabulated and correlated. The results should help in estimating parameter values for …

Cross Section For Excitation Of The Fourth Positive Band System In Carbon Monoxide By 20-120 Kev Protons, John T. Park, D. R. Schoonover, George W. York Jan 1970

Cross Section For Excitation Of The Fourth Positive Band System In Carbon Monoxide By 20-120 Kev Protons, John T. Park, D. R. Schoonover, George W. York

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Excitation cross sections for the fourth positive band system in carbon monoxide have been determined from studies of the energy-loss spectra of 20-120-keV protons incident on gaseous CO targets. The energy-loss spectra had an energy resolution of about 2 eV. Prominent peaks in the spectra were observed at 8.5 and 13.8 eV. The first peak is believed to be due to excitation of the fourth positive band system of CO (X+1A 1, while the 13.8-eV peak covers a number of possible states, including the B+2 and the C+1 states. Changes in the slope of the ionization continuum were noted at …
