Charge-Transfer Cross Sections For Negative Ions On Atomic And Molecular Targets, W. (William) R. Snow, R. D. Rundel, R. Geballe

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Charge-transfer cross sections for H- on O, O2, and NO2; O- on H, O, H2, O2, and NO2; and C- on H and O have been measured over an energy range of 0.5 to 4 keV using a modulated crossed-beam apparatus. The experimental cross sections are compared with theories of resonant and non-resonant charge transfer based on a two-state approximation. For the reactions H-+O O-+H, the cross sections are found to be consistent with detailed balancing. The effect of electron detachment on charge-transfer …

The Mean In Statistics, Rex E. Babcock Dec 1969

The Mean In Statistics, Rex E. Babcock

Honors Theses

When one speaks of how statistics have been utilized in decades past there is much to say. However, it is even more astonishing when one speaks of the utilization of statistics today. The use of statistics is widespread virtually over all of the world today, and is put to use in such fields as surveys, census, psychometrics, and almost every business, vocation, and employment that may come to one's mind. But I wish to confine myself to the mean in statistics; I will even make another boundary on myself by discussing only the arithmetic mean, geometric mean, harmonic mean, and …

The Effect Of The Rate Of Formation On The Structure And Properties Of Paper, William M. Reif Dec 1969

The Effect Of The Rate Of Formation On The Structure And Properties Of Paper, William M. Reif

Masters Theses

Paper contains an uneven distribution of fiber fractions through its cross section. The objective of this study was to determine how the rate of formation affected the structure and properties of paper. The structure of paper was analyzed with reference to the cross-sectional distribution of fines and the fines to long fibers ratio in the paper.

The formation rate and distribution of fins were varied by applying a vacuum to the British sheetmold system. As the fines were a different color than the long fibers, their distribution was determined by analyzing the brightness values of layers split from the paper. …

Infrared Reflectivity Of Doped Insb And Cds, Thomas J. Mcmahon, Robert John Bell Dec 1969

Infrared Reflectivity Of Doped Insb And Cds, Thomas J. Mcmahon, Robert John Bell

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The coupling of free carriers and lattice-vibrational modes in CdS and InSb was investigated by using reflectance measurements. When the free-carrier concentration is such that the longitudinal-optical-mode frequency is at or near the plasma frequency, the longitudinal mode takes on a mixed character and is shifted in a manner similar to that described by Varga in 1965, while the transverse mode remains fixed. The electron effective masses in such a situation can be determined with the lattice effects excluded. In the case of CdS, the polaron mass and additional absorption in the plasma mode above the longitudinal-optical phonon frequency must …

Dimethyl Sulfoxide Oxydation Of Hydroxy-Steroids And Studies On The Oxidation Of The 5’–Hydroxy Group Of Nucleosides, Carmen V. Zenarosa Dec 1969

Dimethyl Sulfoxide Oxydation Of Hydroxy-Steroids And Studies On The Oxidation Of The 5’–Hydroxy Group Of Nucleosides, Carmen V. Zenarosa

Dissertations

Introduction

In our earlier work we demonstrated the usefulness of the acidcatalyzed reaction between N-(p -tolyl)diphenylketenimine (21) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) for the oxidation of secondary alcohols. This was exemplified by the oxidation of 2',3'-O-isopropylideneadenosine and other secondary alcohols.1 We have now extended this procedure to the oxidation of hydroxy-steroids.

Alkynylamines or ynamines can be written in two resonance forms: R-C≡C-N R'2 and R-C=C=NR'2. Because of the close similarity between the latter structure and the structure of a ketenimine (R2C=C=N-R') and the ability of sulfoxide-ketenimine to effect the oxidation of secondary alcohols, we …

Nuclear Structure Studies In 90Y, Ronald E. Goans Dec 1969

Nuclear Structure Studies In 90Y, Ronald E. Goans

Masters Theses

Differential cross sections (12.5° to 47.5°) were measured for the 89Y (d,p) reaction with 33.3 Mev deuterons from the Oak Ridge Isochronous Cyclotron. Proton spectra up to 5 Mev excitation in the 90Y were observed in nuclear emulsions exposed in the focal plane of the broad range spectrograph. The resolution was approximately 25 Kev. The excitation energies agreed within experimental error with (d,p) experiments at 12 Mev and 15 Mev. Comparisons were made with DWBA calculations and ℓ-transfers were assigned to 25 levels. The ℓ-transfers and spectroscopic factors are in satisfactory agreement with previous papers for most strong …

The Isoelectronic Principle And The Accuracy Of Binding Energies In The Hückel Method, Jerry Goodisman Nov 1969

The Isoelectronic Principle And The Accuracy Of Binding Energies In The Hückel Method, Jerry Goodisman

Chemistry - All Scholarship

In the Hükkel and other methods, binding energies are calculated by subtracting the sum of orbital electronic energies for the molecule from the sum of orbital electronic energies for the separated atoms, and not considering the internuclear repulsion. Since this last may be several orders of magnitude greater than the binding energy, reasonable results could not be obtained without an approximate cancellation with another neglected term. It is shown that such a cancellation is a consequence of the isoelectronic principle (invariance of binding energy to change in atomic number of constituent atom). Numerical examples are given.

Vibrational Excitation By Electron Impact Near Threshold In H2, D2, N2, And Co, Paul Burrow, G.J. Schulz

Paul Burrow Publications

The trapped-electron method is applied to the measurement of the slopes of the vibrational cross sections near their respective thresholds. Absolute values are obtained by normalization to positive-ion cross sections. The values obtained in H2 are 43 for v=1, 0.72, for v=2, 0.04, for v=3, and 0.003, for v=4, in units of 10-18 cm2/eV. The values for N2 are 2.5 for v=1 and about 0.02 for v=2, whereas, the values for CO are much larger, i.e., 120 for v=1 and 2.4 for v=2. Various corrections that are …

Mössbauer Effect In The Ferroelectric Pbtio₃-Bifeo₃ Solid Solutions, C. M. Yagnik, James P. Canner, Robert Gerson, William Joseph James

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Mössbauer spectra of the system (PbTiO3)0.95(BiFeO3)0.05 have been studied from room temperature to 585°C. From the isomer-shift of 0.491±0.02 mmsec-1 at room temperature, the ionicity is found to be 60% ± 20%. A discontinuity in the plot of isomer-shift versus temperature at Tc is observed. The quadrupole splitting at room temperature is 0.295 ± 0.02 mm/sec-1. A dip in the Mössbauer fraction is observed at the Curie temperature.

Quasilattice Interpretation Of The Thermodynamic Properties Of Mixing Of Binary Alkali-Metal Systems, J. Bevan Ott, J. Rex Goates Nov 1969

Quasilattice Interpretation Of The Thermodynamic Properties Of Mixing Of Binary Alkali-Metal Systems, J. Bevan Ott, J. Rex Goates

Faculty Publications

Quasilattice theory was applied to heats of mixing in the six systems formed from the binary combinations of Na, K, Rb, and Cs. The alkali-metal systems are particularly well suited for a critical test of the quasi-crystalline assumption since the theoretical model for these systems is relatively simple and the thermodynamic data are fairly complex. Very good fits of the heat-of-mixing data were achieved by assuming that the larger atom in the binary system covered multiple sites on the quasilattice. The values of the empirically determined constants appear to fit the physical significance accorded to them by the quasilattice model. …
