Noise As A Factor In Urban Health, Eric Bauer

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The hazards to general health from excessive noise are recognized, but along with studies of the sources and increase in community noise, measures should be taken to reduce the possible widespread damage to hearing by means which are known and available.

A Note Of A Class Of Hadamard Matrices, Jennifer Seberry Jan 1969

A Note Of A Class Of Hadamard Matrices, Jennifer Seberry

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

An Hadamard matrix H is a matrix of order n all of whose elements are + 1 or -1 and which satisfies H ffT = nIn . H = S + In is a skew-type Hadamard matrix if ST = -So It is conjectured that an Hadamard matrix always exists for n = 4t, t any integer. Many known matrices and classes of matrices can be found in [1].

Simulating Regional Interindustry Models For Western States, William A. Schaffer, Kong Chu Jan 1969

Simulating Regional Interindustry Models For Western States, William A. Schaffer, Kong Chu

Applications

Although regional input-output models are now most frequently constructed on the basis of reasonably adequate surveys, simulation (estimating) techniques not based on original survey data are still in use by many regional scientists for quick and less costly results. We will modify our original aggregation procedures, examine our results through several statistical tests of tables constructed for three Western states, and discuss a possible correction procedure for improving raw estimates of interindustry transactions.

A Class Of Hadamard Matrices, Jennifer Seberry Jan 1969

A Class Of Hadamard Matrices, Jennifer Seberry

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Whenever there exists a quasi-skew Hadamard matrix of order 4m and (4n - I, k, m - n + k) and (4n - I, u, u - n) configurations with circulant incidence matrices, then there exists an Hadamard matrix of order 4m(4n - I).

Equivalence Of Hadamard Matrices, W. D. Wallis, Jennifer Seberry Jan 1969

Equivalence Of Hadamard Matrices, W. D. Wallis, Jennifer Seberry

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Suppose In is a square-free odd integer, and A and B are any two Hadamard matrices of order 4m. We will show that A and B are equivalent over the integers (that is, B can be obtained from A using elementary row and column operations which involve only integers).

Equilibrium Concentration Of Impurity-Vacancy Complexes, Robert Fuller, H.B. Rosenstock Jan 1969

Equilibrium Concentration Of Impurity-Vacancy Complexes, Robert Fuller, H.B. Rosenstock

Robert G. Fuller Publications

In recent years the transport properties of alkali halide crystals have been discussed in terms of fi ve defects, i.e. isolated anion vacancies, isolated cation vacancies, isolated impurity ions, nearest neighbor vacancies of opposite electric charge (divacancies), and nearest neighbor impurity- vacancy complexes [1]. Originally these defects were treated as noninteracting particles located at appropriate lattice sites (the presence of divacancies and complexes was not assumed) and the defect concentrations were obtained from statistical mechanics. Subsequently the defects were allowed to interact with oppositely charged defects located at nearest neighbor lattice sites and the concentrations of divacancies and complexes were …

Vertical And Lateral Variations In A Welded Tuff, Ted Richard Dinkel Jan 1969

Vertical And Lateral Variations In A Welded Tuff, Ted Richard Dinkel

Masters Theses

"During the Tertiary period, nuée ardente type eruptions spread large deposits of welded tuffs over southwestern Utah and southeastern Nevada. The Wah Wah Springs Tuff is a member of one of the most extensive of these units, the Needles Range Formation of Oligocene age. Its known outcrop area is estimated at 13,000 square miles. Relief was slight in the area during the time of eruption to enable the flows to spread over so large an area. In an effort to analyze the lateral and vertical continuity of the member, a petrographic study was undertaken. The average composition of the Wah …

Isotopic Anomalies Of Noble Gases In Natural Gas, Garry A. Bennett Jan 1969

Isotopic Anomalies Of Noble Gases In Natural Gas, Garry A. Bennett

Masters Theses

"This investigation of the abundance and isotopic composition of noble gases in helium-rich gas wells was undertaken in order to obtain new data which might be used to elucidate the origin of isotopic anomalies of noble gases in the atmosphere. Since noble gases are presently leaking to the atmosphere (Damon and Kulp, 1958a; Bieri et al., 1967-) the isotopic composition of the present atmosphere is not static. The direction of change, and ultimately the origin of anomalous noble gases, might therefore be discovered in studying the noble gases presently leaking from the earth. Since the two major noble gas isotopes …

Michael Reactions Part Iv Syntheses With Carboalkoxycarbenes, Frederick Ralph Carman Jan 1969

Michael Reactions Part Iv Syntheses With Carboalkoxycarbenes, Frederick Ralph Carman

Masters Theses

"A preliminary investigation has been made involving syntheses with dicarboalkoxycarbenes for the purpose of developing new heterocyclic and alicyclic synthese employing functionalized carbenes. The ultimate goals were the development of a stereospecific synthesis of trans fused and angularly substituted ring systems suitable for conversion to natural products and the development of useful synthetic paths to the azabullvalene system. Although these ultimate goals were not realized, new and improved syntheses of alkyl substituted anisoles and diazomalonic esters, including the first reported synthesis of di-tert-butyl-diazomalonate were accomplished. The addition of dicarboalkoxycarbenes to di-, tri- and tetra- substituted ethylenes, tropilidene and 7-aza-tropilidenes by …

A Geochemical Study Of The Maquoketa Formation In Pike County, Missouri, John Siegfried Trapp Jan 1969

A Geochemical Study Of The Maquoketa Formation In Pike County, Missouri, John Siegfried Trapp

Masters Theses

"Statistical interpretation of geochemical data was used to determine the environment of deposition of the Maquoketa Formation in Pike County, Missouri. A cyclic sequence was noted which can be best explained by cyclic climatic changes. During the study it was found that elemental relationships which would be expected in a freshly deposited sediment can be found in core samples. In samples from outcrops and quarry faces these relationships have been destroyed. As these elemental relationships reflect mineralogical relationships, serious doubts have arisen as to the validity of petrographic studies of samples taken from outcrops. This study indicates weathering may be …

The Incorporation Of Oxygen-18 Into Oxindole Acid By Cells Of Hygrophorous Conicus, William Green Allen Jan 1969

The Incorporation Of Oxygen-18 Into Oxindole Acid By Cells Of Hygrophorous Conicus, William Green Allen

Masters Theses

"To understand the mechanism of a biological oxidation in which oxygen is incorporated into a substrate, it is necessary to determine the origin of the incorporated oxygen. The objective of this investigation was to determine the origin of the oxygen atom incorporated into indoleacetic acid (IAA) by the IAA oxidase of Hygrophorous conicus through the use of oxygen-18. To determine the source of the oxygen atom incorporated into IAA it is necessary to incubate H. conicus cells with tryptamine or IAA in the presence of ¹⁸O₂ and H₂¹⁶O in one case and ¹⁶O₂ and H₂¹⁸O in another. An examination of …

Water Storage Has Not Kept Pace With Stock Numbers : South Stirling Survey Finding, A L. Prout Jan 1969

Water Storage Has Not Kept Pace With Stock Numbers : South Stirling Survey Finding, A L. Prout

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

RESULTS of a survey on water storage capacity in the South Stirlings area indicate that farm water storage has not kept pace with increased clearing and stock numbers.

This has resulted in many farmers requesting advice on water conservation projects following two consecutive years of low rainfall runoff.

The Long Term Effects Of Frequent Cropping, Stanley Thomas Smith Jan 1969

The Long Term Effects Of Frequent Cropping, Stanley Thomas Smith

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

AGRICULTURALLY speaking, few Western Australian soils are more than 50 years old. We have the responsibility of preserving them for farming—not for one man's lifetime, but for centuries.

The aim of this article is to demonstrate that cropping and cultural practices do have some effects on the soil, and that these effects should be considered when choosing a farm rotation.

Wildflowers Of The Stirling Range, Alexander S. George Jan 1969

Wildflowers Of The Stirling Range, Alexander S. George

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

TWO hundred miles south-east of Perth, the Stirling Range rises abruptly from the surrounding plain. About forty miles long, it is a line of semi-isolated hills, rather than a continuous block.

There are many intriguing plants of diverse colour and form. Well over 400 species are known from the Range. A number of these are found no-where else, and some are restricted to one mountain.

Two more new products are now available and these have several advantages over other herbicides.

An Evaluation Of The Roadside Technique For Censusing Breeding Waterfowl, Darrel W. Sauder Jan 1969

An Evaluation Of The Roadside Technique For Censusing Breeding Waterfowl, Darrel W. Sauder

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An evaluation of the roadside technique for censusing breeding waterfowl was conducted in east-central South Dakota. On the 54-mile transect used in 1968, number of coutns necessary to be within 20 percent of population mean with specified confidence of 0.90 for blue-winged teal (Anas discors) and gadwall (Anas strepera) was five and three using miles or wetlands. Within same limits counts needed for mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) were at least four for miles and three for wetlands. Shorter transects, used in 1967 required more counts. Transects 21 miles long required up to 10 counts based on miles and 11 based on …

The Effect Of A Large Reservoir On Local Government Revenue And Expenditure, Clyde T. Bates Jan 1969

The Effect Of A Large Reservoir On Local Government Revenue And Expenditure, Clyde T. Bates

KWRRI Research Reports

Development of a large multi-purpose reservoir within the area of their jurisdiction may affect property ta.x revenue and expenditure of county governments and school districts. Privately owned land sold to a federally sponsored reservoir is not subject to property taxes because of the doctrine of intergovernmental immunity. Local officials often assume that this loss of assessment will reduce their tax revenue and thereby their fiscal ability to provide an acceptable level of government services. They may also expect the influx of construction workers or the disruption of existing facilities to increase the cost of providing these services. The study approaches …

Water Quality Changes Under Ice Cover In Northern Prairie Lakes, Steven P. Gloss Jan 1969

Water Quality Changes Under Ice Cover In Northern Prairie Lakes, Steven P. Gloss

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Water quality changes under ice cover were studied in seven northern prairie lakes. The lakes are high in dissolved materials and exist essentially as closed systems during the winter months. Ice cover ranging from 53 to 86 cm developed on the lakes. Melted ice samples showed small amounts of dissolved impurities present in surface layers of the ice. No substantial concentrations of any ions were found in the ice of lower layers. Specific conductance increased over 40% under ice cover in two of the lakes studied. Increases in other lakes ranged from 19 to 38%. Major ions showed increases similar …

Kinetics Of The Decomposition Of The Cupric Ion Sulfhydryl Bond In Beef Plasma Albumin, Gary Rice Jan 1969

Kinetics Of The Decomposition Of The Cupric Ion Sulfhydryl Bond In Beef Plasma Albumin, Gary Rice

Honors Theses

The purpose of this work was to study the kinetics of the binding of cupric ion to beef plasma albumin, in particular the decomposition of the Cu++--BPA complex which absorbs light at 375 millimicrons.

The work of Klotz, Urquhart, Klotz, and Ayers has shown that the characteristic absorption band at 375 mu produced by the binding of cupric ion to beef plasma albumin is due to a copper- sulfhydryl bond. They have further demonstrated that the disappearance of this absorption band with time is accompanied by irreversible changes in the structure of the protein. The intensity of the initial absorption …

Ionium Age Determination, Leon Johnson Jan 1969

Ionium Age Determination, Leon Johnson

Honors Theses

Natural radioactive decay provides a means of determining the age of geological specimens. It is found that the number of atoms of a radioactive isotope disintegrating per unit time is linearly proportional to the existing number of atoms and independent of exterior parameters.

A History Of Mathematics Through The Time Of Greek Geometry, Janet Moffett Jan 1969

A History Of Mathematics Through The Time Of Greek Geometry, Janet Moffett

Honors Theses

The concept of numbers and the process of counting developed long before the time of recorded history. The manner of its development is not known for certain but is largely conjectural. It is presumed that man, even in most primitive times, had some number sense, at least to the extent of recognizing "more" or "less" when objects were added or taken away from a small group. As civilization progressed it became necessary for man to count. He needed to know the number of sheep he owned, the number of people in his tribe, etc. The most logical method was to …

A Study Of Earth Science Teachers And Practices In North Dakota For The Academic Year 1968-1969, Howard C. Reith

Theses and Dissertations

In the period between 1961-1964 the North Dakota department of Public Instruction initiated long overdue changes in the science curriculum for the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades of the public schools. Titese involved changes from general science to the life, earth, and physical sciences. During this same period there was a re vitalization of interest in earth science at the national level, with the public school enrollment rising from several thousand to well over one million.

Because of the rapid national growth in earth science enrollment, and the status of earth science in North Dakota, a study to determine the …
