Liquid Scintillators. The Decomposition Of 2, 5-Diphenyloxazole In Ultraviolet Light. A Thin Layer Chromatography Stud, John W. Hustler

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

A study has been initiated in order to understand more completely the manner in which a model organic scintillator decomposes in ultraviolet light. The compound, 2,5-diphenyloxazole (PPO), was dissolved in toluene in quartz vials and irradiated with ultraviolet light for various intervals of time. Both. vacuum-dried and untreated samples of PPO \·1ere subjected to UV excitation in sodium-dried and water-saturated solutions of toluene. The effect of passing oxygen and nitrogen through the solutions was also studied with the confirmation that dissolved oxygen and water accelerated the decomposition leading to the formation above the meniscus of the vial of a white …

Patterns Of Land Use Change Around A Large Reservoir, Billy R. Prebble Jan 1969

Patterns Of Land Use Change Around A Large Reservoir, Billy R. Prebble

KWRRI Research Reports

Reservoirs are built to control floods, provide water for irrigation and municipal supply, generate electric power, augment low flows for navigation and water quality control, and provide improved fishing and recreation opportunity. A reservoir is justified if the benefit it provides to society exceeds the cost to develop it. Much research has been done to determine the benefit of a water resources development to society as a whole. Some research has explored the benefit of such a facility to a region. Very little research exists on the effects of a reservoir on the immediately surrounding area.

It seems reasonable that …

Economic Development Of Areas Contiguous To Multipurpose Reservoirs: The Kentucky-Tennessee Experience, Michael B. Hargrove Jan 1969

Economic Development Of Areas Contiguous To Multipurpose Reservoirs: The Kentucky-Tennessee Experience, Michael B. Hargrove

KWRRI Research Reports

This study analyzes the effects of multi-purpose reservoir projects on the economic development of areas contiguous to the dam and reservoir. The study concentrates on the development potential in a humid region where the provision of agricultural water is not critical to the economy. Can a reservoir project be a major part of a development program for a local area? How can the favorable effects of the project on the contiguous area be increased? These questions are answered by this study.

The study is divided into three major phases. The first phase is a theoretical analysis of the determinants of …

The Persistence Of Pesticides In Impounded Waters, Robert A. Lauderdale Jan 1969

The Persistence Of Pesticides In Impounded Waters, Robert A. Lauderdale

KWRRI Research Reports

The purpose of this study was to investigate the persistance of the insecticides aldrin, dieldrin, chlordane, and DDT in water. A small drainage area was sprayed with these compounds, and the insecticides were collected in the runoff water from the area. Laboratory experiments were performed to determine the effectiveness of aeration, adsorption on silt, and adsorption on algae in removing the pesticides from water.

All of the pesticides were found in samples of water collected from the area for the full period of the tests. The amounts which were found in a small pond into which the surface water drained …

Studies In Syntheses Of Non-Isoprenoid Sesquiterpenes, Raojibhai Javerbhai Patel Jan 1969

Studies In Syntheses Of Non-Isoprenoid Sesquiterpenes, Raojibhai Javerbhai Patel

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to find the shortest route to prepare the 1,9-dimethyl decalone system I, a key intermediate in the synthesis of non-isoprenoid sesquiterpenes. The decalone system I was prepared in good yield by dehydrating the hydroxyketone II with 50% H2SO4. The dehydration of hydroxyketone II was also affected by heating in the presence of iodine crystals to yield 80% of the decalone system I.

The basic kinds of approaches under investigation were the Diels-Alder reaction and the Robinson annellation. The Diels-Alder reaction between the conjugated diene, 1-acetoxybutadiene (III) and 2,3-dimethylcyclohexenone (IV) under …

The Vapor-Liquid And Liquid-Liquid Phase Equilibria For The Partially Miscible System Methanol-Cyclohexane, Richard A. Christman Jan 1969

The Vapor-Liquid And Liquid-Liquid Phase Equilibria For The Partially Miscible System Methanol-Cyclohexane, Richard A. Christman

Masters Theses

By use of techniques of previous workers for determining liquid-liquid equilibrium and through the use of a circulation still, the complete phase diagram for the partially miscible system, methanol-cyclohexane, was determined. Tile accuracy of earlier liquid-liquid phase data was not improved upon although it was closely approximated. The critical solution temperature was found to be 46.4 degrees C., which is within the range of temperatures reported in earlier measurements.

Activity coefficients of methanol and cyclohexane were calculated from the phase boundaries of the boiling point diagram determined in the present investigation. These activity coefficients were in agreement with the Gibbs-Duhem …

Tagged Arithmetic, Paula J. Bettinger, Andrew M. Manos, Betty Jo Armstead

Armstead Publications and Presentations

A special tagged arithmetic system has been developed for use with FORTRAN pro grams written to process experimental data. The tagged arithmetic system carries a condition code with every numerical value and uses a special output to call attention to answers computed by using questionable input data. The questionable input data may result from instrumentation o r data recording system malfunctions, which can cause ill-conditioned calculations that result in process-time faults or error conditions.

Continuous Cropping Trials, M G. Mason Jan 1969

Continuous Cropping Trials, M G. Mason

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

The aims of the trials at Binnu, Chapman, Wongan Hills, Avondale and Merredin were:

  1. To determine whether the application of nitgrogen and fertilisers can maintain yields under a "continuous cropping" system
  2. To compare the merits of three sources of nitrogen for this purpose.
  3. To determine the maintenance dressing of superphosphate under this system and the need for supplementary fertilisers.

Trial 61A2
There have been no great problems with this trial. for a number of years the plots have required chemical spraying to control wild oats which had built up. In 1968 and 1969 some plots were soil sampled to determine …

Chemical Firebreaks, Geoffrey A. Pearce Jan 1969

Chemical Firebreaks, Geoffrey A. Pearce

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

MANY public bodies are making regular use of herbicides to create firebreaks. In Western Australia more than $200,000 is being spent on chemicals each year to protect property from fire.

In many situations where the buildings and property are of great value, the cost of the chemical becomes insignificant.

Nitrogen Use On First Crops After Legume Pasture, M G. Mason Jan 1969

Nitrogen Use On First Crops After Legume Pasture, M G. Mason

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Apart from the normal factors affecting response of cereals to nitrogen fertilizers, i.e. length of growing season, rainfall, soil type etc, there are other factors which affect the response after a legume pasture. these factors include length of the previous legume phase and how good was the stand of legumes. Unfortunately for most of the trials in the past, involving the use of nitrogen on first crops after legumes, this information is not available.

Evaluation Of The Ovulated Follicle Technique As A Means Of Determining Pheasant Production, C. Denis Allen Jan 1969

Evaluation Of The Ovulated Follicle Technique As A Means Of Determining Pheasant Production, C. Denis Allen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A study of the ovulated follicle technique for determining egg production in pheasants was conducted during 1967 - 1969. Evidence indicated collection of wild hens for follicle counts should be between 5 and 14 weeks after cessation of laying. Questionable follicles encountered should be considered ovulated follicles and included in the counts. Most questionable follicles were believed to originate from ovulated atretic follicles that were harder to identify because of their particular stage of regression. The influence of freezing on atretic follicle counts was studied, and no adverse effects were found. A technique was developed for selectively staining atretic follicles. …

Mixed Magnetic Systems: A Model With Application To (1-X)Cdcr2s4 · Xcdcr2se4, Harry A. Brown

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Curie temperatures and asymptotic Curie temperatures are calculated for mixed magnetic systems by a semi-classical Bethe-Peierls-Weiss cluster approach. The systems are typified by (1-x) CdCr2Se4 · xCdCr2Se4 in which the substitution changes the anions but not the magnetic cations. It is found that next-nearest-neighbor interactions are needed to match the data but that, with them, excellent agreement can be obtained for a reasonably unique choice of the exchange integrals. © 1969.

Summation Over Feynman Histories In Polar Coordinates, David Peak, A Inomata Jan 1969

Summation Over Feynman Histories In Polar Coordinates, David Peak, A Inomata

All Physics Faculty Publications

Use of polar coordinates is examined in performing summation over all Feynman histories. Several relationships for the Lagrangian path integral and the Hamiltonian path integral are derived in the central‐force problem. Applications are made for a harmonic oscillator, a charged particle in a uniform magnetic field, a particle in an inverse‐square potential, and a rigid rotator. Transformations from Cartesian to polar coordinates in path integrals are rather different from those in ordinary calculus and this complicates evaluation of path integrals in polars. However, it is observed that for systems of central symmetry use of polars is often advantageous over Cartesians.
