Procedure And Structure For An Instructional Laboratory Which Supplements Research, R. S. Adams Jr. Jan 1968

Procedure And Structure For An Instructional Laboratory Which Supplements Research, R. S. Adams Jr.

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

This paper describes the organization of a laboratory course in Soil Chemical Analysis. Students select and pursue small research problems to gain experience in the soil analyses that are discussed in lecture and required in the laboratory. Involvement of the class in an actual research problem proved challenging to both the instructor and the class. The data obtained often supplemented current departmental research. Individual projects were found to be easier to supervise than team problems. This paper reports results of a team project examining parameters of a pot experiment. Shape of the pot, methods of watering, methods of fertilizing, and …

Discharge Of Radioactive And Thermal Wastes, Richard E. Pogue, Dean E. Abrahamson Jan 1968

Discharge Of Radioactive And Thermal Wastes, Richard E. Pogue, Dean E. Abrahamson

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

A combination of several economic factors, together with growing concern about air pollution associated with conventional, fossil-fuel electric generating facilities, hos contributed to the increase in size and number of nuclear-powered plants. Although these nuclear plants are "clean" from the standpoint of conventional air pollutants, they must dispose of thermal and radioactive wastes. This paper outlines the sources and quantities of these wastes, based on technical data for the boiling-water reactor proposed for Monticello, Minnesota.

Morphology And Water Quality In Three Abandoned Granite Quarries, Keith M. Knutson Jan 1968

Morphology And Water Quality In Three Abandoned Granite Quarries, Keith M. Knutson

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Limnological conditions were studied in two abandoned granite quarries in George Friedrich Park, St. Cloud, Minn. These quarries were excavated from 1886 to 1890 and left shallow due to inadequate water pumping systems at the time. The quarries were less than one hectare in area and had mean depths of 7.3 and 8.2 m. The annual heat budget was about the same for both quarries, 10,535 gm. cal/cm•. Concentrations of [chemical symbols] were determined. Very low concentrations of nitrate nitrogen were found ([chemical symbols]). The hypomimia of both quarries contained hydrogen sulfide throughout the study. Data show West Quarry to …

An Investigation Of Amino Acid Decomposition, Jack H. Frost, E. Winston Grundmeier Jan 1968

An Investigation Of Amino Acid Decomposition, Jack H. Frost, E. Winston Grundmeier

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Amino acid decarboxylation studies generally show that extraneous reactions accompany CO, formation, especially at high temperature and when metal ion catalysts are used. In the present study some of these reactions are investigated in the reaction system, a- or ,a-amino acid and CuSO, at 130-155° C. Histidine, a- and .B -alanine, glycerine and norvaline were each studied for determination of products. The extent of formation of the products, NH,, CO,, aliphatic amines and Cu metal, was determined quantitatively. A near l: l correspondence in NH,:CO2 exists for the amino acids studied. No correspondence could be detected between Cu metal product …

Cell Model Of A Fluid. Ii. Thermodynamic Properties Of The System, Ralph G. Tross, Louis H. Lund Jan 1968

Cell Model Of A Fluid. Ii. Thermodynamic Properties Of The System, Ralph G. Tross, Louis H. Lund

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In Paper I of this series (preceding paper) the model was formulated mathematically, and the solution derived in the form of an infinite series. The convergence and analyticity of the solution were investigated. It was then applied to one-, two-, and three-dimensional systems with nearest-neighbor interactions, and low-temperature series for these systems were obtained. In the present article the thermodynamics of the model are investigated. The series solution of the partition function derived in Paper I is applied to systems with interaction potentials of increasing complexity. The validity of the model is established by showing that in the appropriate limits …

Cell Model Of A Fluid. I. Evaluation Of The Partition Function And Series Expansions, Ralph G. Tross, Louis H. Lund

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The partition function of a one-dimensional system of particles with all interactions active is formulated in terms of Ising ferromagnetic spin states. It is shown how the partition function for two- and three-dimensional systems can be obtained from the one-dimensional one by restricting the number of bonds per particle. After writing the partition function in matrix form, the operator of interest is diagonalized and its trace expressed in the form of a convenient infinite series. The series is shown to be absolutely convergent and its analytic properties are briefly investigated. It is then applied to one-, two-, and three-dimensional systems …

Dielectric Properties Of Solid Solutions Of Bifeo₃ With Pb(Ti, Zr)O₃ At High Temperature And High Frequency, Robert Travis Smith, Gary D. Achenbach, Robert Gerson, William Joseph James

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Solid solutions of BiFeO3 with PbTiO3, PbTi0.5Zr0.5O3, and PbZrO3 were prepared. The crystallographic data on these solutions, which are basically perovskitic, are given. The dielectric constants of the materials were determined at a frequency of 0.53 GHz and at temperatures up to 800°C. Dielectric Curie points were found in solutions containing up to 90 mole % BiFeO3. These results leave little doubt that BiFeO3 is ferroelectric or antiferroelectric. The extrapolated Curie point for BiFeO3 is above 850°C. BiFeO3 appears more likely to be ferroelectric than …

Distribution And Mortality Of Saskatchewan-Banded White-Fronted Geese, Harvey W. Miller, Alex Dzubin, John T. Sweet

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

At its annual spring meeting in 1959 the Technical Committee of the Central Flyway Council recognized a decreased population of the white-fronted goose (Anser albifrons). The recorded harvest in Canada and the United States had exceeded the estimated wintering population in some years. After summarizing records for the Central and Mississippi Flyways the Committee found them inadequate for management and to help fill this void, recommended banding on local concentration areas including Saskatchewan.

An Analytical Study Of Air Circulation In Caves, Arrigo A. Cigna Jan 1968

An Analytical Study Of Air Circulation In Caves, Arrigo A. Cigna

International Journal of Speleology

The different types of air circulation in caves are classified according to the origin of the circulation, as either static or dynamic. In a cave static causes are: (a) differences between inside and outside air density owing to: (i) air temperature; (ii) relative humidity; (iii) chemical composition; (b) atmospheric pressure variation. Dynamic causes are: (a) moving fluids: (i) inside the cave; (ii) outside the cave. Whenever possible the above mentioned phenomena have been considered from a mathematical point of view in order to obtain equations relating the different quantities involved.

On A New Species Of Earthworm From A Mexican Cave, Gordon Gates Jan 1968

On A New Species Of Earthworm From A Mexican Cave, Gordon Gates

International Journal of Speleology

Eodrilus mexicanus of the megadrile oligochaete family Acanthodrilidae is described along with some data as to development, regeneration and abnormality. Relationships with its American congeners, often inadequately characterized, are discussed and the present state of Eodrilus systematics is criticised. E. mexicanus seems likely to be of unusual interest as the second species of earthworm to have ovaries in segment xii.

Endogenous Metabolism Of Polyporus Sulfureus. : Utilization Of Exogenous Carbohydrates And Fatty Acids, Shu-Mei Wang

Masters Theses

"A strain of Polyporus sulfureus from the collection at the University of Missouri at Rolla was used in this investigation. Organisms of this genus have been reported to produce eburicoic acid in good yield and this was confirmed for the organism used in this study by the isolation and identification of eburicoic acid from the mycelium. Growth studies of this organism showed that 4% malt extract is a better medium than synthetic media containing asparagine, nitrate or nitrate plus 0.5% yeast extract as nitrogen sources. An examination of the pH of the culture medium led to the conclusion that regardless …

Absolute Specification Of X-Ray Spectra By Laplace Transform Analysis Of Attenuation Data, Gerald Robert Lusk Jan 1968

Absolute Specification Of X-Ray Spectra By Laplace Transform Analysis Of Attenuation Data, Gerald Robert Lusk

Masters Theses

"A well characterized, variable plate separation ion chamber was utilized as a detector to collect x-ray attenuation data for generating information on the Laplace transform predicted spectrum of a 50 KvCP conventional x-ray tube. The variable plate separation feature allows one to include a wavelength dependent correction to the detector response which is associated with the hardening of the x-ray spectrum as it traverses the attenuating material. With this correction, the conventional two-term Laplace transform was shown to approximate independently the bremsstrahlung and characteristic L radiation from the tungsten target. The detector provides an absolute statement of the target-referenced x-ray …
