A Digital Archive Of Northern Hemisphere Snow Cover, November 1966 Through December 1980, Kenneth F. Dewey, Richard Heim Jr.

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this article is to acquaint the research community with a new data base—a digitized archive of Northern Hemisphere snow cover. Historically, those researchers who needed snow cover data for climatic and atmospheric boundary layer studies have had to rely on the irregularly spaced (and in some regions, sparse) grid of point observations. Northern Hemisphere Weekly Snow and Ice Cover Charts, which are created from analyzed satellite imagery at the National Earth Satellite Service (NESS), have been available on an operational basis since late 1966. Each of these weekly charts for the period November 1966 through December 1980 …

The author includes culinary notes and comments on protocol in China.

Teaching Vertebrate Pest Control: A Challenge To Wildlife Professionals, Robert M. Timm Jan 1982

Teaching Vertebrate Pest Control: A Challenge To Wildlife Professionals, Robert M. Timm

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Vertebrate pest control deals with wild animals that create health hazards, damage resources, or become a general nuisance. Some people prefer the terms "wildlife damage control" or "animal damage control" because they focus on controlling damage rather than controlling animals. This is an important principle. Vertebrate animals that cause damage often have many positive values. In dealing with these situations our objective should always be to reduce or prevent damage; this does not necessarily require the killing of animals. I use the term "vertebrate pest control" because I believe it is less ambiguous than "damage control." When I call an …

Science for elementary school grades K-6 varies somewhat in content from one textbook series to another, but it is fairly common that 40-60% of the material covered is directly related to physics. These texts suggest that certain learning activities such as experiments, demonstrations, and observations be carried out by the teacher and the class. Often the apparatus for a learning activity is to be constructed from simple, readily available materials. The typical elementary school teacher has had little experience in performing experiments and is often frustrated in his/her attempts at carrying out the suggested learning activity. To meet this need …

Optimal Control Of Stochastic Integrals And Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman Equations, Ii, Pierre-Louis Lions, José-Luis Menaldi

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

We consider the solution of a stochastic integral control problem, and we study its regularity. In particular, we characterize the optimal cost as the maximum solution of ∀vV, A(v)u ≤ ƒ(v) in D'(Ο), u = 0 on ∂Ο, uW1,∞(Ο),

where A(v) is a uniformly elliptic second order operator and V is the set of the values of the control.

Excited States And Photochemistry Of Saturated Molecules. X. Ab Initio Calculations On The Vertical States Of Methylsilane, Mark S. Gordon Jan 1982

Excited States And Photochemistry Of Saturated Molecules. X. Ab Initio Calculations On The Vertical States Of Methylsilane, Mark S. Gordon

Mark S. Gordon

The vertical excitation energies are investigated for singlet and triplet states of methylsilane. To analyze the importance of Rydberg functions and of both valence and Rydbergd functions, a sequence of ten different basis sets are considered in conjuction with a single excitation configuration interaction. It is found that all of the singlet states below the first ionization potential may be characterized as Rydberg states, while there is considerable valence character in some of the low‐lying triplets. If the valence s and p functions are represented reasonably well (e.g., with a split valence basis set), the role of valence d orbitals …

Self‐Consistent Molecular Orbital Methods. Xxiii. A Polarization‐Type Basis Set For Second‐Row Elements, Michelle M. Franci, William J. Pietro, Warren J. Hehre, J. Stephen Binkley, Mark S. Gordon, Douglas J. Defrees, John A. Pople

Mark S. Gordon

The 6‐31G* and 6‐31G** basis sets previously introduced for first‐row atoms have been extended through the second‐row of the periodic table. Equilibrium geometries for one‐heavy‐atom hydrides calculated for the two‐basis sets and using Hartree–Fock wave functions are in good agreement both with each other and with the experimental data. HF/6‐31G* structures, obtained for two‐heavy‐atom hydrides and for a variety of hypervalent second‐row molecules, are also in excellent accord with experimental equilibrium geometries. No large deviations between calculated and experimental single bond lengths have been noted, in contrast to previous work on analogous first‐row compounds, where limiting Hartree–Fock distances were in …

Thermodynamic Model For Tricritical Mixtures With Application To Ammonium, Miron Kaufman, Robert B. Griffiths Jan 1982

Thermodynamic Model For Tricritical Mixtures With Application To Ammonium, Miron Kaufman, Robert B. Griffiths

Miron Kaufman

Procedures are developed for using composition data in the three-phase region and variations of meniscus heights to determine the parameters needed to relate a classical thermodynamic model for fluid mixtures near tricritical points to actual experiments. In the case of the mixture ammonium sulfate + water + ethanol + benzene the result is a reasonably good fit to a variety of data, including light scattering measurements of intensity and correlation length. There is some evidence for deviations from the classical theory, but it is not unambiguous.

Infinite Susceptibility At High Temperatures In The Migdal-Kadanoff Scheme, Miron Kaufman, Robert B. Griffiths

Miron Kaufman

The Migdal-Kadanoff real-space renormalisation group scheme applied to the Ising and classical XY (and probably other) ferromagnetic models yields an infinite susceptibility at all temperatures above the critical temperature for a hypercubic lattice of dimension d > 2.

Nonmeasurable Sets And Pairs Of Transfinite Sequences, Branko Ćurgus, Harry I. Miller Jan 1982

Nonmeasurable Sets And Pairs Of Transfinite Sequences, Branko Ćurgus, Harry I. Miller

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Many proofs of the fact that there exist Lebesgue nonmeasurable subsets of the real line are known. The oldest proof of this result is due to Vitali [4]. The cosets (under addition) of Q, the set of rational numbers, constitute a partition of the line into an uncountable family of disjoint sets, each congruent to Q under translation, Vitali's proof shows that V is nonmeasurable, if V is a set having one and only one element in common with each of these cosets.

Measurement Of Synchrotron X-Ray Energies And Line Shapes Using Diffraction Markers, Juana Vivó Acrivos, S.S. P. Parkin, K. Hathaway, J. R. Reynolds, M. P. Klein, A. Thompson, D. Goodin

Faculty Publications, Chemistry

Standard reference markers for accurate, reproducible synchrotron x-ray energies are obtained using a three Si crystal spectrometer. The first two crystals are in the monochromator and the third is used to obtain diffraction markers which monitor the energy. Then for any value of the glancing angle on the reference Si crystal the energy for the (333) diffraction must occur at 3/4 that of the (444) and 3/5 of that for the (555). This establishes for the first time an absolute synchrotron energy scale. Higher-order diffractions are used to determine excitation line profiles. We conclude that the use of reference diffractions …

Structure And Influence Of The Tillamook Uplift On The Stratigraphy Of The Mist Area, Oregon, Moinoddin Murtuzamiya Kadri Jan 1982

Structure And Influence Of The Tillamook Uplift On The Stratigraphy Of The Mist Area, Oregon, Moinoddin Murtuzamiya Kadri

Dissertations and Theses

Fifty three sedimentary samples were analyzed for their minor and trace element concentrations utilizing instrumental neutron activation analysis. Concentrations of Na, K, La, Sm and Sc, and their ratios appear to establish significant trends. The data suggest a major break from a granitic-metamorphic provenance and a volcanic component dominated provenance between the Cowlitz and Keasey Formations respectively. The provenance of the Astoria Formation indicates the presence of flood basalts.

A Preliminary Investigation Of The Lithological Characteristics Of The Troutdale Formation In Portions Of The Camas, Sandy, Washougal, And Bridal Veil Quadrangles, David Lee Cole

Dissertations and Theses

The study area encompasses a region of about 80 square kilometers, centered about Corbett, Oregon. Sieve analyses suggest that the Troutdale Formation is composed of a conglomerate, a coarse-grained sandstone, and a siltstone lithofacies. Measured sections data show that 56 to 60 percent of the Troutdale Formation's exposures are composed of the conglomerate lithofacies. The coarsegrained sandstone lithofacies makes up 34 to 38 percent, while the siltstone lithofacies makes up only 4 to 8 percent. Pebble count data show that the representation of basalt varies from 69 to 100 percent, with an average of 85 percent, while quartzite varies from …

A Geophysical Study Of The North Scappoose Creek, Alder Creek, Clatskanie River Lineament, Along The Trend Of The Portland Hills Fault, Columbia County, Oregon, Nina Haas Jan 1982

A Geophysical Study Of The North Scappoose Creek, Alder Creek, Clatskanie River Lineament, Along The Trend Of The Portland Hills Fault, Columbia County, Oregon, Nina Haas

Dissertations and Theses

The Portland Hills fault forms a strong northwest trending lineament along the east side of the Tualatin Mountains. An en echelon lineament follows North Scappoose Creek, Alder Creek, and the Clatskanie River along the same trend, through Columbia County, Oregon. The possibility that this lineament follows a fault or fault zone was investigated in this study. Geophysical methods were used, with seismic refraction, magnetic and gravity lines run perpendicular to the lineament. The seismic refraction models indicate the near surface basalt is broken in many places, with 15 - 30 meters (50 - 100 feet) vertical displacement, down to the …

The Geology Of The Floras Creek Area, Curry County, Oregon, Jon Dudley Bounds Jan 1982

The Geology Of The Floras Creek Area, Curry County, Oregon, Jon Dudley Bounds

Dissertations and Theses

The Floras Creek area, east of the town of Langlois, near the southwest Oregon coast, includes Colebrooke Schist (a klippe of metamorphosed pelitic sediments of Jurassic age), Jurassic Otter Point Formation (a melange complex), and lower the middle Eocene Roseburg and Lookingglass Formations, part of a sandstone-shale sequence occurring more extensively in other areas. The Colebrooke Schist occurs in the south-central part of the area, bounded on the Otter Point and Roseburg. The Lookingglass is exposed as a small (1.5 sq. km) block in the north-north-west part of the area. Two major structural trends are found in the Floras Creek …
