Step-Wise Variation Of Spectrometer Quench Rates For Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance Measurements, Curtis M. Wise

In nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) it is desirable to better examine the magnitude of the resonance signals. This thesis describes the construction and testing of spectrometer control circuits which enable one to better examine a single resonance signal to the near exclusion of extraneous resonance side band responses and circuit noise in the NQR detection apparatus. Added to the basic spectrometer circuit is a step-wise varying quench rate control. For each adjustment of this control other control units are activated to keep the chosen NQR signal fixed in position and in magnitude within the spectrometer's span of detected radio frequencies. …

The ommidirectional cosmic ray fluxes at an altitude of 300 miles and within ± 34 degrees latitude were studied using two Cerenkov counters and a scintillation counter aboard the 0S0-82 Satellite. The fluxes were found to depend strongly on the geomagnetic field with the trapped particles in the South Atlantic Radiation Anomaly being directional in some locations.

The cross sections for the production of the ²⁰⁷Pb^m state from ²⁰⁷Pb(n, n') and ²⁰⁸Pb(n, 2n) have been measured from the threshold through 14 MeV by observing the 1 .064 MeV gamma ray in the decay of ²⁰⁷Pb^m (T _½ = 0.818 ± 0.004 sec) with a 3 in. x 3 in. NaI (T1) detector. Separated lead isotopes were irradiated for 4 sec and pneumatically transported to the detector. A 400-channel analyzer a used a time analyzer to record counts from neutron monitor during the irradiation and from the detector after the irradiation. These …

The purpose of this investigation was to continue the study of surface wave phenomena initiated by Woodward and Bryant. [l], [2] Woodward, using an experimental arrangement similar to that shown in Fig. 3, observed that the intensity of light measured above, but parallel to, the reflected beam was a very sharp function of the incident beam angle at the critical angle. They also observed that the light intensity above the reflected beam decreased exponentially as the detector was moved away from the reflected beam in the plane of incidence. An isomer shift has been observed in the Mössbauer study of the 121.8-keV (2⁺→0⁺) transition in Sm¹⁵². A value of (Δ〈R²〉/〈R²〉)_2-0=(10±3)×10^-4 is deduced, based on isotope shift data for Sm¹⁵² and Sm¹⁵⁴. This value disagrees with present theoretical prediction. In particular, the influence of the β band in Sm¹⁵² can only account for about 20% of the observed stretching.

A Historical Introduction is given as background material to the problem of the existance of an ?-hydroxy-?-substituted tetronic acid as the intermediate in the oxidation of tetronic acids to ?-diketones. Three schemes are proposed by which this intermediate may be synthesized, starting with ethyl acetoacetate. In the first scheme the ?-substituted tetronic acid is oxidized by lead tetraacetate to the ?-acetoxy-?-substituted compound. In the second and third schemes, the lead tetraacetate oxidation can be applied to the ?-substituted acetoacetic ester, or the ?-substituted acetoacetic ester can be chlorinated with sulfuric chloride and then converted to the ?-acetoxy ester. Temperature differences of about 5, 10, and 15 V, were applied to uniformly packed and insulated horizontal column of Millville silt loam soil using mean temperatures near 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 and 23.5 C. The temperature distribution along the soil column was determined using copper constantan thermocouples. Soil samples were taken to determine volumetric moisture content, and soil water potential, using the vapor pressure psychometer technique. Zinc deficiency, in many cases, is closely related to organic matter decomposition. DeRemer and Smith (1964) studied the effects of decomposing sugar beet tops on the reactions of Zn⁶⁵ in a Portneuf soil. They found that with time the Zn⁶⁵ associated with lime minerals, exchangeable, and water soluble fractions of the soil decreased, while that found with the organic and mineral fractions increased. This increase in the mineral fraction is of particular interest, since the majority of the Zn⁶⁵ was found to be with this fraction after a period of time. They also showed that the increase …

1. Changes in the energy status of water that occurred in Milville silt loam and in bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) plants growing on it , during two consecutive 6-day periods while being irrigated with saline solutions, were studied.
2. Total soil water potential (Ψ soil) (measured with thermocouple psychrometers), matric-potential (Ψ_m) (measured with tensiometers) were considered. In leaf samples, the total water potential (leaf) and the osmotic potential (Ψ_π)--after freezing-- were determined with thermocouple psychrometers; by difference, the pressure potential (Ψ_p) was obtained.

Movement of atrazine in response to furrow irrigations was studied using the samples of Timpanogos silt loam soil. Distribution in soil profile of surface applied herbicide was determined by drawing samples of water extracts through porous cylinders. Atrazine quantity was determined by spectrophotometer.

It was observed that the herbicide found in the water extracts was an indication of the quantity present in the soil. The herbicide moved readily with the applied water. Irreversible thermodynamic model could not be applied because of the initial and final boundary conditions. The pattern of movement was in conformity with the chromatographic theory.

The west-central part of the Malad Range is located in south-eastern Idaho. This area was the site of thick marine deposition in the early Paleozoic period. In the Tertiary and Quaternary periods continental deposition occurred, covering the Paleozoic rocks. Quartzite and shale units of the Brigham Quartzite are found near the base of the Cambrian section. Carbonate with shale interbeds is found in the middle and late Cambrian units. Limestone and silty limestone are found in the early and middle Ordovician time overlain by the middle Ordovician Swan Peak Quartzite. Rocks of Paleozoic, Tertiary, and Quaternary age are represented in the northern part of the Malad Range. The Paleozoic rocks are represented by thirteen formations that are characterized lithologically by quartzites, shales, and carbonates. The oldest formation in the mapped area of Paleozoic age is the Brigham Formation, and the youngest formation is the Jefferson Formation of late Devonian age.

The rocks of Tertiary age are conglomerates, shales, and limestones and are represented by the Wasatch Formation, the Salt Lake Formation, and boulders. Quaternary rocks include sediments of the Lake Bonneville Group and alluvium.

Model estimation programming provides a method for obtaining extreme solutions subject to constraints. Functions which are continuous with continuous first and second derivatives in the neighborhood of the solution are approximated using quadratic polynomials (termed estimating functions) derived from computed or experimental data points. Using the estimating functions, an approximation problem is solved by a numerical adaptation of the method of Lagrange. The method is not limited by the concavity of the objective function.
