A Contribution To The Knowledge Of The Invertebrate Cave Faunas Of Venezuela: Invertebrate Faunas Of Tropical American Caves, Part 4, Stewart B. Peck

International Journal of Speleology

The invertebrate faunas of four caves in northern Venezuela were studied. Three were dry and one was a wet cave; but guano provided the base of the food chain in all four caves. The faunas in each were strikingly different. Of 24 non-accidental species of arthropods, all were judged to be troglophiles. All were scavengers except for 5 predators, one ectoparasite, and one parasitoid.

International Journal of Speleology

Two series of experiments were performed on the oriented locomotor responses of 27 specimens of the blind cave fish Phreatichthys andruzzii from Somalia using a three-compartment choice apparatus. The oriented responses were observed individually from the central compartment towards either of the extreme ones. In one of them, 500 ml water were introduced from either the tank in which the test fish had previously resided with conspecifics (1st series, 46 experiments) or from another tank occupied by unknown conspecifics, the other compartment receiving an equivalent volume of pure water. The two series were performed in random blocks of 6 experiments, …

The Missouri River Channel Catfish, Eugene T. Mahoney Jan 1982

The Missouri River Channel Catfish, Eugene T. Mahoney

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

The catfish family (Ictaluridae) is large; the total number of recognized genera being more than one hundred and the number of species nearly one thousand. Most species inhabit the rivers of warmer countries particularly South America and Africa. The total number of species known from North and Middle America is 108 (Jordan and Evermann 1969). In the United States and Canada we have 37 species, but only about a half dozen of these are of sport or commercial importance.

The genus Ictalurus is confined to the fresh waters of North America and contains 11 known species; six of these are …

A Study Of The Critical Cluster Size For Water Monolayer Clusters On A Model Agi Basal Substrate, Richard C. Ward, Barbara N. Hale, Sergio Terrazas Jan 1982

A Study Of The Critical Cluster Size For Water Monolayer Clusters On A Model Agi Basal Substrate, Richard C. Ward, Barbara N. Hale, Sergio Terrazas

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a formalism and estimate a critical cluster size for water monolayer formation on a (rigid) model AgI basal substrate. The formalism is modified from that developed for vapor clusters [B. N. Hale and R. C. Ward, J. Stat. Phys. 28, 487 (1982)] and uses a Metropolis Monte Carlo method developed by Squire and Hoover [J. Chem. Phys. 50, 701 (1969)] to determine (Helmholtz) free energy differences for clusters containing n and n-1 molecules. Calculations for clusters of n=1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 24 water molecules on a model AgI basal face at 265 K are …

D- Production By Charge Transfer Of (0.3 - 3)-Kev D+ In Thick Alkaline-Earth Vapor Targets: Interaction Energies For Cah+, Cah, And Cah-, R. (Robert) H. Mcfarland, A. S. Schlachter, J. W. Stearns, B. Liu, R. (Ronald) E. Olson Jan 1982

D- Production By Charge Transfer Of (0.3 - 3)-Kev D+ In Thick Alkaline-Earth Vapor Targets: Interaction Energies For Cah+, Cah, And Cah-, R. (Robert) H. Mcfarland, A. S. Schlachter, J. W. Stearns, B. Liu, R. (Ronald) E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Equilibrium charge-state fractions of energetic deuterium ions and atoms emerging from alkaline-earth (magnesium, calcium, strontium, and barium) vapor targets are reported in the range of 0.3- to 3-keV incident D+ energy. Deuterium negative-ion production in thick barium and calcium vapor targets equals similar production in cesium vapor (34%). Moreover, the maximum D- production in strontium vapor exceeds that for all other known gas or vapor targets and reaches 50% at 500 eV. Theory does not quantitatively describe these results, although ab initio molecular-interaction-energy calculations on the neutral and negative-ion CaH systems lead to the prediction of large D- yields at …

A Study Of Poly(P‐Xylylene)‐Coated Asf5‐Doped Polyacetylene, J. E. Osterholm, H. Yasuda, L. L. Levenson Jan 1982

A Study Of Poly(P‐Xylylene)‐Coated Asf5‐Doped Polyacetylene, J. E. Osterholm, H. Yasuda, L. L. Levenson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electrical conductivity measurements and scanning electron microscopy have been used to study uncoated and poly(p‐xylylene)‐coated samples of polyacetylene doped with AsF5. These initial results indicate a considerable reduction in the decay rate of conductivity in the presence of oxygen as well as a decreased rate of thermal decomposition of the dopant when heated between 50°C and 115°C in vacuum by the coating. Production Of Highly Charged Rare-Gas Recoil Ions By 1.4-Mev/Amu U44+, A. S. Schlachter, W. Groh, A. Müller, H. F. Beyer, R. Mann, Ronald E. Olson Jan 1982

Production Of Highly Charged Rare-Gas Recoil Ions By 1.4-Mev/Amu U44+, A. S. Schlachter, W. Groh, A. Müller, H. F. Beyer, R. Mann, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recoil-ion-production cross sections in rare gases are measured for 1.4-MeV/amu U44+ ions and are calculated for 1-5-MeV/amu projectiles in charge state 44 + with the use of the classical-trajectory Monte Carlo method and the independent-electron model. The calculations reasonably predict the net-charge-production cross sections, which exceed 10-13 cm2 for the heavy rare gases; the calculations are found to underestimate the cross sections for low-charge-state recoil ions and to overestimate the cross sections for high-charge-state recoil ions. The experimental cross sections for production of highly charged recoil ions are found to be large, e.g., greater than 1x10-16 cm2 for production of …

The Light Curves Of Rr Lyrae Field Stars, Norman R. Simon, Terry J. Teays Jan 1982

The Light Curves Of Rr Lyrae Field Stars, Norman R. Simon, Terry J. Teays

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Fourier decompositions have been made of the light curves of a large sample of RR Lyrae field stars. The coefficients have been tabulated. Following the scheme of an earlier investigation of classical Cepheids, certain combinations of the low-order coefficients - φ21, R21, and φ31 - are plotted against period. The Bailey-type c pulsators stand out from the type ab stars, particularly on the R21 plot which is found to be a more sensitive discriminator of Bailey type than is the traditionally employed amplitude-period diagram. We compare the RR Lyrae plots of φ21, …

Picosecond Laser Pulse Irradiation Of Crystalline Silicon, K. L. Merkle, H. Baumgart, R.H. Uebbing, F. Phillipp Jan 1982

Picosecond Laser Pulse Irradiation Of Crystalline Silicon, K. L. Merkle, H. Baumgart, R.H. Uebbing, F. Phillipp

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Morphology changes introduced by picosecond laser pulses at λ = 532 nm and 355 nm in (111) and (100) silicon samples are studied by means of optical and high-voltage electron microscopy. Depending on energy fluence, orientation and wavelength, amorphous or highly defective regions may be created. From an analysis of damage thresholds and damage depth distributions it is concluded that melting and energy confinement precedes the formation of the structural changes.

Organic N-Chloramines: Chemistry And Toxicology, Frank E. Scully, Jr., Maxwell A. Bempong Jan 1982

Organic N-Chloramines: Chemistry And Toxicology, Frank E. Scully, Jr., Maxwell A. Bempong

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The stability of aqueous solutions of organic N-chloramines, suspected of contaminating chlorinated water, has been studied. Two factors influence the decomposition of solutions of N-chloropiperidine and N-chlorodiethylamine: a spontaneous decomposition and photodecomposition. Since solutions of these compounds are relatively long-lived, a need for an analytical method for their identification is discussed. A new method is described which involves reaction of organic N-chloramines with arenesulfinic acid salts. The method gives high yields of stable arenesulfonamides. Several toxicological studies of N-chloropiperidine are described. The compound is mutagenic by Ames assay in Salmonella typhimurium strain TA 100 and does not require metabolic activation …

Biomedical Applications Of Plasma Polymerization And Plasma Treatment Of Polymer Surfaces, H. Yasuda, M. Gazicki Jan 1982

Biomedical Applications Of Plasma Polymerization And Plasma Treatment Of Polymer Surfaces, H. Yasuda, M. Gazicki

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Thin polymer films obtained by plasma polymerization usually show good biocompatibility when compared to classical biomaterials such as Silastic. The thicknesses of these films (from several hundreds of Å to several μm) make them suitable for the purpose of changing the surface properties of the substrate without altering its bulk properties. Both the above features together indicate the possible Biomedical use of plasma polymerization as well as plasma treatment of polymer surfaces processes. The purpose of this review is to present the most significant efforts to develop such applications with the specification of particular fields where these efforts are directed. …

Water Quality Trends In The Northwest River : A Report To The Hampton Roads Water Quality Agency, Bruce J. Neilson

Reports

During the initial 208 studies of the Hampton Roads area, no mathematical model of receiving water quality was applied to the Northwest River. At the request of the City of Chesapeake, the HRWQA P003085-03 work program included tasks leading to development of a water quality model of the Northwest River. Data from field studies conducted in 1980 and 1981 and the math model applied to the river have been presented in a companion volume report (Kuo et al., 1982). This report summarizes the results of model simulations made to determine future water quality conditions and trends.

The Effects Of Atrazine On Zostera Marina In The Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, Carl H. Hershner, Keith B. Ward, Jerome E. Illowsky, Et Al Jan 1982

The Effects Of Atrazine On Zostera Marina In The Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, Carl H. Hershner, Keith B. Ward, Jerome E. Illowsky, Et Al

Reports

This project was designed to assess the effects of agricultural herbicides on submerged aquatic vegetation in the lower Chesapeake Bay. Atrazine was selected for testing because it is the most widely utilized herbicide in the Bay region. Zostera marina was the submerged vegetation studied.

The project began with two surveys. The first survey, conducted in 1979, covered forty eight stations throughout the Virginia portion of the Chesapeake Bay. The survey was designed to indicate typical atrazine loading for the lower Bay. A second survey in 1980 was limited to the Severn River, and was intended to indicate the duration of …

Flow Injection Atomic Absorption Assay Of Copper And Zinc In The Plasma Of Age Dependent Audiogenic Seizure Susceptible Mice, Neal Dwain Byington Jan 1982

Flow Injection Atomic Absorption Assay Of Copper And Zinc In The Plasma Of Age Dependent Audiogenic Seizure Susceptible Mice, Neal Dwain Byington

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Flow injection atomic absorption procedures with less than 10%RSD at 1.0 ppm were developed for the assay of copper and zinc in 10 μL samples of mouse plasma. The flow injection apparatus was designed with a pulseless liquid flow control system, regulated by inert gas pressure. The aspiration liquid is 6% t-butanol in water. After exhaustive parameter optimizations, copper assays were conducted with the conventional air-acetylene flame at 324.754 nm and zinc assays were conducted with the unconventional argon-hydrogen air diffusion flame at 213.856 nm. The argon-hydrogen flame system was chosen because it absorbs very little ultraviolet light.

Møller-Plesset Treatment Of Electron Correlation In (Hohoh)-, M. M. Szczesniak, Steve Scheiner Jan 1982

Møller-Plesset Treatment Of Electron Correlation In (Hohoh)-, M. M. Szczesniak, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The effects of electron correlation on the calculated properties of the (HOHOH) anion are studied using Møller–Plesset (MP) perturbation theory. With this technique, inclusion of corrections up to third order are shown to provide results quite similar to those obtained with an extensive CI approach when equivalent basis sets are used. Barriers to proton transfer between the two oxygen atoms at a fixed R(OO) distance are computed with a number of basis sets ranging from split‐valence 4–31G to triple‐valence with polarization functions on all atoms, 6–311G∗∗. Each successive enlargement of the basis set leads to a greater barrier. …

Comparison Of Proton Transfers In Cationic Heterodimers And Homodimers Of Nh3 And Oh2, Steve Scheiner Jan 1982

Comparison Of Proton Transfers In Cationic Heterodimers And Homodimers Of Nh3 And Oh2, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Ab initio molecular orbital methods are used to study proton transfers in the cationic heterodimer (H3NHOH2)+ as well as the symmetric homodimers (H2OHOH2)+ and (H3NHNH3)+. All calculations are carried out at the Hartree–Fock level with a 4‐31G basis set to ensure consistency. For proton transfers along a linear hydrogen bond in the heterodimer, asymmetric single‐well potentials with a minimum corresponding to (NH4)+(OH2) are obtained for R(NO) distances of less than 2.85 …

Eleven Year Vegetational Comparison In An Arid Grassland, Edgar F. Kleiner Jan 1982

Eleven Year Vegetational Comparison In An Arid Grassland, Edgar F. Kleiner

Canyonlands Research Bibliography

A study has been made of the vegetational condition of two graben valleys in Canyonlands National Park. The sites, formerly subjected to relatively heavy grazing pressure, were originally investigated in 1970 and analyzed again in 1981, providing an eleven-year record of succession. Comparisons are made to successional trends noted in related studies of disturbed and pristine areas. The graben valleys, with few exceptions, show a successional trend over eleven years toward the climax vegetational condition of an area that has never been disturbed.

Factors Influencing Development Of Cryptogamic Soil Crusts In Utah Deserts, David C. Anderson, Kimball T. Harper, Ralph C. Holmgren Jan 1982

Factors Influencing Development Of Cryptogamic Soil Crusts In Utah Deserts, David C. Anderson, Kimball T. Harper, Ralph C. Holmgren

Canyonlands Research Bibliography

The relation of some physical and chemical soil characteristics to cryptogamic crust development was determined from sites in semidesert regions of southern Utah. The effects of grazing on cryptogamic crust development also was examined. Electrical conductivity, percentage silt, and soil phosphorus were found to be correlated with well-developed cryptogamic crusts. Both total cryptogamic cover and the number of cryptogamic species decreased under grazing pressure. The management of rangelands, especially in arid regions, would be strengthened by understanding the role of cryptogamic crusts and considering them in range management decisions.

Homogeneous Nucleation Of Ethanol, John L. Schmitt, G. W. Adams, R. A. Zalabsky Jan 1982

Homogeneous Nucleation Of Ethanol, John L. Schmitt, G. W. Adams, R. A. Zalabsky

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The authors have used an expansion cloud chamber to measure homogeneous nucleation rate as a function of temperature and supersaturation in ethanol. Nucleation rates from 102 to 105 drops/cm3 sec were measured in the temperature range 252-272 °K. An empirical functional fit to the data is used to extrapolate for comparison with other data in the literature at a nucleation rate of 1 drop/cm3 sec and to compare with the predictions of the classical Becker-Doring homogeneous nucleation theory. A full listing of the data and thermodynamics constants used in the reduction of the data is given in an appendix. © …

A Spectroscopic Study Of Intramicellar Environment With Merocyanine Dye Probes, Elise Jane Daggs Jan 1982

A Spectroscopic Study Of Intramicellar Environment With Merocyanine Dye Probes, Elise Jane Daggs

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The effects of micelle forming surfactants hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide, sodium dodecyl sulfate and igepal CA~6JO on the visible spectra of merocyanine dyes of the form 1-alkyl-4-[(3', 5'-alkyl oxocyclohexadienylidene)ethylidene]- 1,4-dihydropyridine were studied. In all cases the visible spectrum shifted to the red when the dye was incorporated into the micelles. The magnitude of the shifts was found to be dependent on the substituted groups and the positioning of the chromophore of the dye in the micelle aggregates. The shifts indicate a highly hydrated environment about the surfactant head groups and an environment equivalent to that of pure ethanol solvent at some undetermined …

Interfacial Electrochemistry Of Cytochrome C And Myoglobin, Edmond F. Bowden Jan 1982

Interfacial Electrochemistry Of Cytochrome C And Myoglobin, Edmond F. Bowden

Theses and Dissertations

The interfacial electrochemistry of horse heart cytochrome c was studied at metal and metal oxide electrodes. Sperm whale myoglobin reactions at metal oxide and surface modified electrodes were also investigated. Emphasis was on the measurement and mechanistic interpretation of the heterogeneous electron transfer kinetic parameters for these electrode reactions.

The motivation for this study stems from the fact that some electron transfer proteins, e.g., cytochrome c, transfer electrons heterogeneously in physiological systems. Specific electrodes may, therefore, serve as suitable models for physiological surfaces. Electrode and membrane interfaces are both electrically charged and both have oriented hydration water layers.

The cyclic …

Sequential Probability Ratio Tests For The Shape Parameter Of A Nonhomogeneous Poisson Process, Lee J. Bain, Max Engelhardt Jan 1982

Sequential Probability Ratio Tests For The Shape Parameter Of A Nonhomogeneous Poisson Process, Lee J. Bain, Max Engelhardt

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Sequential probability ratio tests for the shape parameter of one or more nonhomogeneous Poisson processes, with power intensity functions, are provided. The tests can be performed when the scale parameter is an unknown nuisance parameter; the effective loss of not knowing the scale parameter is one observation per process. The resulting tests can be expressed in terms of the maximum likelihood estimators of the shape parameters for the usual fixed sample procedure. A further advantage of the present approach is that the scale parameters for different processes, in the multiple sample procedures, need not be equal. Approximations for the operating …

A Central Midlands Catchment Study : The Prospects For Land Drainage, B J. Hillman, B. J Jan 1982

A Central Midlands Catchment Study : The Prospects For Land Drainage, B J. Hillman, B. J

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Flooding, waterlogging and salinity problems in Western Australia are complex. Usually broad areas of land are affected, thus it is hard for one farmer alone to combat the effects because the problem so often starts and finishes off his farm.
