Relationship Of Pleochroism And Specific Refractivity Of Cupric Compounds To Cupric Ion Coordination., Pilsum Phiroze Master
Relationship Of Pleochroism And Specific Refractivity Of Cupric Compounds To Cupric Ion Coordination., Pilsum Phiroze Master
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
The ion has a 6-fold coordination. The CU-polyhedron is distorted due to the Jahn-Teller effect. There is, hence, varying polarizability in each Cu-polyhedron. Also since the nature (and size) of the ligands in each Cu-polyhedron varies, the polarizability varies from one Cu-polyhedron to the next.
Light waves passing through the Cu-polyhedra cause electron polarization. Conversely the polarizing action of light waves upon the atoms is accompanied by a reaction of the atom upon the light waves. Hence, absorption of light energy is directly proportional to polarizability. This thesis demonstrates this relationship by:
l) Showing that the projection of the square-planar …
Recent Fluvial Geology In Western North Dakota, Thomas M. Hamilton
Recent Fluvial Geology In Western North Dakota, Thomas M. Hamilton
Theses and Dissertations
The thesis here abstracted was written under the direction of Lee Clayton and approved by Walter L. Moore -and John R. Reid as members of the examining connnittee, of which Mr. Clayton was chairman.
In western North Dakota many drainage channels that are incised into valley fill are characterized by steep, unvegetated sides. Many such channels contain actively eroding scarps. The origin of these scarps is most frequently related to increased water velocity causing accelerated erosion on a steepened reach of the valley flat.
The principal mechanism of scarp migration is soilfall which is initiated by undercutting of the scarp …

A Stratigraphic And Sedimentologic Analysis Of The Tongue River And Sentinel Butte Formations (Paleocene), Western North Dakota, Chester F. Royse Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
The Tongue River-Sentirel Butte contact has been regarded by many workers as a vague color boundary of minor extent within a relatively homogeneous sequence of Paleocene strata. Consequently, the Sentinel Butte has come to be regarded as a subordinate unit of the ”Tongue River Formation. As defined in report, the contact is a distinctive horizon between two discrete lithogenetic units. It characterized by three criteria: a horizon (HT Butte bad) &t the top of the Tongue River sequence; a. basal sandy unit in the Sentinel Butte sequence, and a marked change in color between buff yellow Tongue River sediments below …
The Newcastle Formation In The Williston Basin Of North Dakota, Mark Reishus
The Newcastle Formation In The Williston Basin Of North Dakota, Mark Reishus
Theses and Dissertations
The Lower Cretaceous Newcastle Formation of the Black Hills has been traced, through the use of well logs, from near the type section in eastern Wyoming into the subsurface of the Williston Basin. In the Basin, the Newcastle Formation is a very fine to medium grained, gray to white, quartzose sandstone, which overlies the Skull Creek Shale and underlies the Mowry Shale. In area where the Newcastle is absent the overlying and underlying shales cannot be separated and here are referred to as “undifferentiated Mowry-Skull Creek”.
Newcastle deposition occurred mainly in the eastern one-third and western quarter of North Dakota. …
Time And Soil Development On Lateral Moraines, Martin River Glacier, South-Central Alaska, John R. Tinker Jr.
Time And Soil Development On Lateral Moraines, Martin River Glacier, South-Central Alaska, John R. Tinker Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
During the summer of 1966, eighteen soil profiles on a series of 21 lateral moraines, were studied to ascertain the relationship of time to soil development. The moraines are located on Charlotte Ridge on the south margin of the Martin River Glacier in south-central Alaska. The elevation of the highest moraine is approximately fifteen hundred feet and is located 800 feet above the present level of the glacier.
To determine the direct effect of time on soil formation, the remaining soil forming factors were kept constant; the soil pits were located so that relief, exposure, and vegetation of the sites …

A study was made of the intertidal zone of aged wooden pilings from February to June, 1967 at Gloucester Point Virginia, located in the lower York River estuary. Twenty-six species of marine algae were found grouped into three floristic zones.
Nine species were limited to below mean low water, whichialL.rlted the lowest cone. In this group there were six Rhodophyta and three Chlorophyta. Seven floral levels comprised the middle floristic zone between mean low water to a height of 74 cm above mean low water. These levels ere based on uppermost range extensions of sixteen species (six Cyanophyta, two Rhodophyta, one Phaeophyta …
Studies In Coprecipitation Of Trace Amounts Of Elements, Gerald Delano Schucker
Studies In Coprecipitation Of Trace Amounts Of Elements, Gerald Delano Schucker
Masters Theses
"A new approach to preconcentration of trace amounts of elements has been demonstrated whereby traces of metals tied up as chelates are coprecipitated on a column of solid organic material. Complete coprecipitation was found to occur within very narrow pH ranges, thereby allowing separation as well as concentration of the elements by careful adjustment of acidity and concentration of chelating agent. The separation is based on the difference in stability constants of the metal chelates. Preliminary studies with different physical forms of the carrier precipitate, indicate adsorptive processes could play a significant role in the mechanism of the column-coprecipitation process. …

Noble Gases In The Earth And Its Atmosphere, Robert Anthony Canalas
Noble Gases In The Earth And Its Atmosphere, Robert Anthony Canalas
Masters Theses
"Abundance of noble gases extracted from Fig Tree Shale exhibit a marked deviation from the gas content of eclogitic rocks purported to be mantle material. The abundances of the heavy noble gases in shale were found to exceed the highest known meteoritic values. The abundances of the lighter noble gases were found to be comparable to the abundances of these gases in typical chondrites.
Temperature gradient analyses show that excess heavy gases are released at low temperatures. This is interpreted to indicate a preferential adsorption of the heavy noble gases on fine-grained sediments when these gases were being released from …

Comparative Analysis Of Polynomial Root Finding Techniques, Charles Ray O'Daniel
Masters Theses
"The purpose of this study was to investigate and recommend various methods instrumental in finding the roots of a polynomial p(x) = 0. Many different methods are present today, and each has its advantages and disadvantages.
Through thorough investigation, the author has ascertained the key methods to be the method of Bisection, the Newton-Raphson method, and the Bairstow method. Special support in the form of algebraic theorems on the locations and kind of roots are extremely helpful. This combination of theorems and methods provides assurance, speed, and the ability to obtain complex roots.
The Bisnewbar method developed by this author …

Analysis Of Trace Elements In River And Spring Waters, Faridoon Andeshire Namdarian
Masters Theses
"Methods for the analysis of trace elements in natural fresh waters were investigated.
Preconcentration of the water samples by reducing the volume and by using cation adsorption resins was studied. It was concluded that cation absorption was the more promising procedure.
The methods used for analysis were absorption spectrophotometry, neutron activation analysis, and atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry was considered the most suitable method for the analysis of trace elements in waters.
Calcium, copper, lead, zinc, and cadmium were determined in a number of Missouri springs and stream water samples"--Abstract, page ii.

A Study Of The Complexes Of Diketocyclobutenediol, Stewart Michael Condren
Masters Theses
"In this study of the complexes of diketocyclobutenediol, squaric acid, the following original compounds were prepared: zirconyl squarate, indium (III) squarate; titanium (III) squarate, ruthenium (III) squarate, tungsten (VI) squarate, vanadium (III) squarate, and niobium (V) squarate, where squarate refers to the dianion of diketocyclobutenediol. Metal analyses were made on all of these except the ruthenium. However, only three of these metal analyses, namely those for titanium (III) squarate, indium (III) squarate, and zirconyl squarate, warrented [sic] further investigation. Carbon and hydrogen analyses were then made for these three compounds. From the percentage compositions, possible structures were proposed.

Factors Controlling Porosity And Permeability In The Curdsville Member Of The Lexington Limestone, William C. Macquown Jr., Jimmie L. Barr, George T. Hine, Jojok Sumartojo, Edward V. Peck, Franklin D. Thomas
KWRRI Research Reports
Factors controlling the porosity and permeability of the Curdsville Limestone Member of the Lexington Limestone of Middle Ordovician Age in the Blue Grass Region of Kentucky are geological.
Microstratigraphic analysis had led to the division of the lower Lexington Limestone, consisting principally of the Curdsville Member into three beds which may be subdivided into "zones" made up of several lithologic types and sub-types. Lower, middle, and upper bed characteristics are helpful in determining the regional depositional history in the progressively transgressing Curdsville sea. Paleogeography of Curdsville time has been determined by delineation of two local facies: (1) a carbonate bank--shoal …

Review Of The Economic Benefits And Costs Resulting From Dewey Reservoir, David H. Rosenbaum
KWRRI Research Reports
The purpose of this investigation was to study the economic effects of the construction of Dewey Reservoir in Floyd County, Kentucky. Primary emphasis was placed on determining the degree the project had shifted income to this economically underdeveloped area by determining the incomes of those receiving project benefits and those paying project costs. The income redistribution effects of all benefits and costs associated with Dewey Reservoir were evaluated by assuming that the Federal income tax structure indicates the marginal value of income to individuals in the various income brackets.
Major benefits from the Dewey Project have been: flood control, $722,166 …
Covariance Analysis Of Reservoir Development Effects On Property Tax Base, Claude M. Vaughan Jr.
Covariance Analysis Of Reservoir Development Effects On Property Tax Base, Claude M. Vaughan Jr.
KWRRI Research Reports
Much attention has been given in recent years to the development of water resources in the United States. Large scale multi-purpose dam and reservoir projects are of particular interest. Such projects are traditionally undertaken after the resulting benefit has been found to exceed the required cost. The benefits which are most readily evaluated are primary benefits such as flood control, hydroelectric power, and navigation. The purpose of this study is to investigate secondary benefits which accrue to local economies as a result of reservoir construction. The particular secondary benefit which this study evaluates is the reservoir impact on the local …
Control Of Air Pollution Through The Assertion Of Private Rights, Julian Conrad Juergensmeyer
Control Of Air Pollution Through The Assertion Of Private Rights, Julian Conrad Juergensmeyer
Articles by Maurer Faculty
Air pollution is clearly one of the major social problems confronting contemporary American society. Yet the United States is still without an effective federal pollution control program, and those state and local control programs that do exist are largely ineffective. Until government regulation is able to keep the expulsion of air contaminants within tolerable limits, it will be necessary for those seeking to control air pollution to rely upon the assertion of private rights. In this article the author discusses the principal causes of action available to the private pollution controller, and concludes that, although traditional legal concepts may provide …

A Comparative Study Of Inductive Influence On The Hydrolysis Of Beta-Thioglucopyranosides By Beta-Thioglucosidase And Beta-Glucosidase, Robert W. Miller Jr.
All Master's Theses
A series of phenyl-D-thioglucopyranosides were prepared and characterized in order to determine the absolute specificity of the .B-thioglucosidase and B-glucosidese enzyme systems toward the th1oglucosidic bond. The specificity of B-glucosidase of almond emulsin toward oxygen linkage seems to be absolute, since no hydrolysis was observed by this enzyme system toward the phenyl-D-thioglucopyranosides. The P-th1oglucosidase system was found to hydrolyze only two of the thioglucopyranosides. It was apparent that only where the electron-attracting substituents in the phenyl group were strong enough to greatly weaken the strength of the sulfur linkage, as in the case of the nitro group, would there be …
